I’ve been saying this for years: my ultimate goal is to make my crates as small as possible. The digital era has made it so easy to get your hands on a lot of music, but in the process a lot of DJs forget to properly judge if a song should be added to their crates.
the best thing is to have what you use most according of where are you going to play and what your client will request when they hire you ...is pointless to have to much music you will not use it ....a pendrive with extra crates just in case is a good option
I personally don't only do folder by gender, but also by energy. Some track are way more powerful (like thy sound more hard) and some sounds more soft, it's also a good way to know. And for the song in between you can create a folder middle. Like I have hardstyle hard (mostly repetitive and high energy songs with less melodie variation, hardstyle medium (basically more melodic and with some good part of kicks with melodies) and hardstyle calm (mostly more melodic songs which have an orchestrale parts or more calme vocal part) That always helped me a lot. And for more common song I just use folder like 80's to 2000's most known (wich mean literally everyone knows these songs) 80s to 2000's less known, and 80s to 2000's transition (wich means song that can be use between gender like rock and 80's, or Remix of popular song that could be use as a transition after or before 80's another more electronic gender (like deep house or basse house or whatever) By doing these you're not only more organise, but you can have all the right Playlist on the right time on your computer, when I'm doing à 80's party I don't take with me all the hardstyle stuff, and it's way better like that. The only disadvantage is that you loose lots of time sorting the songs, because you need to listen them a little bit to understand where to put it (do not juste read the gender given) but at the end you never get loose and end up with a good things. Now I just have to make these for all my older songs, 2000 songs, because I was not doing that when I started haha. But it worth it, to never have more than 500 songs for an all style party and 200 to 300 songs for a more specific party.
As a new DJ, I can’t stop watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your advice and helping me get started the right way. Keep up the amazing videos and thank you!!
While I understand your point, I personally prefer to keep more over less. I'm somewhere in the 800,000 to 900,000 range. I've been DJing for over 39 years now. Started with vinyl then straight to CDs, I never could get into cassettes other than having a dual deck with something always cued in case of a glitch or other malfunction. Sorry for rambling on so long. Keep the videos coming.
john u sound like me djin iis more than djin its like my happy place a job its like iff im not idin or doin playlists pushin promos , tracklists goin out the way to help people ar/for labels etc ripping tracks keepin up on forums im not happy ienjoy the media side of things nowadays as got older
Dl some song that can be use in all occasions.. and better to dl a song that anyone knows .. kysa sa iilan lang nkaka alam.. baka marami ang nakaka relate.. kahit millennials or matanda
Honestly, i use 1 folder I update my folder before every gig. It wouldnt have more than 250-300 songs Total. Thats enough to get in 5.5-6 hours non stop by a minimum of 1 minute each. The reason i do this is that i notice what people dance less to, and dance more to. Get rid of the less enjoyable and replace them with my own remixes of popular hits or latest hits in general. 30-40 out of these 250-300 songs will be mixed live to get every 20-30 minutes or so to keep the hype going. Pace starts from 70bpm and gradually goes to 130bpm. Thats how i do it If im doing anything wrong, let me know how i can improve myself
It really depends on whether you are the regular Saturday DJ, Wedding DJ or a DJ that plays for specific events at clubs that should determine what type of tracks you have.
I know this is old but I completely agree with Carlo. Up though my Wedding season last year. I was carrying over 200k tracks (including many many multiple remixes of many) and music videos. I combed through my history, and only kept any track I had played in the last ten years, and kept them in my library. I am now down to 1650 tracks which is about 1000 tracks 500 remixes and 150 music videos..This covered every song played over my last 600ish events.
I would not delete the music but spend a decent amount of time curating the playlists for your actual set and constantly update your crates. I have over 5000 reggae tracks but I have multiple reggae playlists that key into the the genre based on mood, tone, time etc. Now, I can probably delete a bunch of tracks that I don't play but they are not in my playlist anyway so they don't bother me and I have the comfort of having them when I get that crazy request at a mobile gig.
I made a huge mistake while playing at my party. I was trying to organize my music into crates but transitioned to serato before my house party. I loaded up all of my music into one crate because I was running late, and that was SO overwhelming, where starting up, I did so well with my one crate of 30 songs
DJing on Ableton for a while taught me something that I forgotten from spinning vinyl; if you genuinely need to dedicate effort towards getting a tune by handing over hard-earned cash for the record (rather than smaller loose change sums for MP3s), having to carry heavy record boxes or beat-gridding it, you won’t just pick any old tune. Only the best tunes will make it into your record box or Ableton racks. You can apply this to your USBs by buying smaller sticks or even just start burning CDRs again. Apply those limitations to get quality over quantity.
Patrick Riarchy not sure what you're implying but whatever, as a wedding dj, I think I have more skills than a club dj not just mixing music but interaction, reading a crowd, the ability to run and control an unknown setting and make people have a great time. In the club setting all you need to know is how to transition music good and collect a check, I never had to even speak to a customer at at a club lol.
For the past 3 years, I've been working on slimming down my music library. I started with deleting doubles/triples/etc then worked on the songs I didn't like, and then kept cutting and cutting. I literally went from 3TBs to less than 1TB as of today, and I am still finding ways to delete the music I have. It's refreshing to know you know your library more and you find the songs you enjoy playing for sure.
750 tracks. I’m brand new to this and literally just spent the last two months sorting, setting hot cues, and saving loops. Finally done with all of them and organizing it all now. Island pride brah! 🤙🏼
Instead of deleting unnecessary songs, I made an archive folder (with many playlists in it) and moved unnecessary songs to the folder. In my case I have total around 6000 songs. 4000 songs are for DJing and another 2000 are in the archive folder. But I need to work more to move songs that I don’t need. It takes time, but makes it easier on the gigs
I dumped nearly one TB on a server. But sometimes when a bunch of guys ask for a rare one and than you look it up can say: yep, got it feels also cool 😎 I sort them by year and favourites
@@djcarlo don't get me wrong. I'm specialised on house and hip hop and a little bit dancehall (I love the different technics and combine them). I store a lot of music. But, like you, not the remix of the remix of the bootleg of the original remix based on a fairy tale from once upon a time 😉. Actually I love the originals and some good versions of that. By the way: great channel. Don't got those good ones in Germany 😑
I've been thinking about backing up my library to the cloud, did you upload it yourself, or send them a hard drive, or use a personal server? Also, having old and rare songs really helps my main gig too.
I agree. Perfectly said. I have a very well maintained music collection for DJing. It's about 10 000 tracks and the best of the best since I started in 1985. Every year it's grows a little too much and when I need to use search more than once in a set i know it's time to clean out a bunch of tracks and sometimes reorganize depending on what kind of gigs the future holds. I'm lucky enough to know 3-6 months ahead where and what kind of event I'm gonna play. 500-1200 tracks is good for one kind of genre or type of set, sometimes less, but I only play full night sets, 4-5 hours, so that's how long I need to be able to play whatever the event. DJ's who bring 3 or 10 times more music, I don't understand. The 10 000 tracks I have cover just about everything I can imagine I will ever have to play, from big band, swing and rock to the latest house, techno and top 40 music. I'm just having a day off after 20 gigs in 19 days in all over the south of Sweden, half of it on party cruisers and on some I didn't know what to play until I arrived. No worries as I trust my music collection. A good and thoughtful cleanup every year keeps the collection in shape.
I also always use a sort of code at the start, so I can have my playlists in my desired order, so for example (I play mostly melodic techno, same style from the likes of tale of us, mathame, the whole afterlife crew and more really): A01- Hard Techno, A02 - aggressive Melodic Techno, A03 - lyrical Melodic Techno, A04 - Melodic Techno, A04 - Soft melodic Techno, all the way down really to A19 - Old throwbacks with some songs even from Barry white lol. But the A00 system helps me keep my playlists in order, and that for me is of paramount importance while DJing
I just stay I'm my lane 90s Hip Hop rnb and old school samples......I love house music but I let the House DJs do their thing and they let me do mine !
This is so relatable to me… I began trimming my selection a few weeks ago and everything its going really well... Less stress for the eyes and the brain
i get a bajillion free edit packs bc i signed up for multiple mailing lists, so if idk what songs to play, i just hit “sort by bpm” and find a good song around the range im playing at lol
I’m a beginner and have 50 songs in my main playlist, it’s a mix of Avicii, Kygo, Martin GarriX, David Guetta, and some other popular songs/Artists, but I mix them very good cause I listen to those songs constantly🤟
Me and my buddy had a charity gig in my home town. He had his Music all sorted out on Spotify while I had it all locally downloaded. Shortly before the Gig was up to start his Internet went out for some reason and I had to take the first two shifts alone. Learned a lesson right there.
I got about 60k. One of the reasons I switched to VDJ from Scratch Live was at the time SL could not handle a huge music library. I actually use the streaming service Deezer inside of VDJ for the last couple of years. Good to have when playing the bar with an international crowd and those rare sound requests.
lenny bolds I could not switch to rekordbox with my ddj 1000 bc of the Deezer integration. And with the new 2020 interface fine tuning I m glad to be stuck on vdj
Dj'ing for 11 years I'm proud to say I have less than 8k songs which is a hell of a lot more than plenty of my DJ buddies out there. Also that number would be slashed in half (easily) if I didn't have to cater to wedding/corp styles of music as well. Great video!
Im new to the actual sense of DJ music mixing. With that said, most of the events I have provided music entertainment for had been for family gatherings, friend get togethers and neighborhood gatherings. There is a good feeling that comes with being able to play something the crowd hasn't heard in a very long time and having them acknowledge that it was awesome to reminisce. Ultimately that is the goal of music i guess. Obviously depending on the venue you are hosting I still believe more is better, at least for me it is.
I searched for this specific video of yours, Coz I seem to be having a hard time creating my setlist. 1st is that I already have a lot of music. 2nd is that I want to keep on downloading and just getting that new music and remixes. Thank you for another enlightenment, now I'll just make the best out of what I have in my library.
I've started Deejaying about two months ago. My personal library has a couple thousand songs ranging from a variety of genres. However I sorted the genres I plan to mix in separate playlists. My goal is to try and build my go-too playlists and figure out how those songs work with one another. My primary genre has a little over 700 songs excluding duplicates and my secondary genre has about 150 or so songs. Eventually I want to build a playlist of each of the genre's of music I want to play but I think I am going to end up being pickier what I put into those later playlists. Like you said the key is not too get overwhelmed; I want to be able to rock it whatever song I play in because I am having fun mixing and playing it :)
I'm a beginner DJ. I practice with the DDJ-SB3. So I downloaded a whole lot of songs until I found out that I got over 3,000 and it got hard for me to find certain songs I should play. I took your advice and asked myself the same thing: "Would I play this song?" and "Will people vibe to this song?". I narrowed my library to over 1,000 songs I need and want to play and my mind is more clearer. (that includes remixes). Thank you.
Currently got just about 100+ songs in my library. I add songs i like, i dont need thousands, i mostly play songs that i produce myself. I would love to dj with a streaming service, but i can't afford it lol
I took your advice about deleting music - spent 3 weekends cleaning up my music. Went from 16k tracks down to 4,700 tracks. Best DJ advice I've ever received. Thank you 👍
Hy! Great advice! As TLM says, digital environment is now more and more friendly with Djs so I use a base of music the essentials on the hard drive, a backup of this on my external drive and 50% of my library is based on streaming services where I organized playlists. Have a great day, salute from România
iTunes (downloaded): 50,100 Spotify (that is the max number of songs you can save on Spotify currently): 10,000 Soundcloud: 2,039 All the music is organized and tagged
If you want a small scale version of this, Try the DJay app by Algoriddim. Lets you import from spotify.. Been using this for on the go practicing since 2015
Just a Litle reminder... Spotify is only fore private lissening. You shouldent use it in club. It’s against the law and tirms. Thats why we dj’s bye aure music. You have to own your copy of song’s. Back in the day’s, when you bout the records. Thats makes you uniqe Dj. For you have that record in your colection. No one else... -Give you self a thout about it, What i trying to say.
Wow 👏 thanks a lot Dj Carlo. This helps a lot. I have about 6000 songs but now with this tutorial I’ve started selected my best playlist for gigs. Thanks once again
In the same boat, plus I play a lot of different language songs for the different cultures that I dj for and I’m always afraid to start the work and finally start erasing and also ORGANIZING my crates
DJ Ezoh start at the oldest song you have and go from there. I’m pretty sure you have tracks you never play or have never played. Now may be the time to upload your quality while you’re at it.
omg dude, this is or was totally me! glad to know this wasn't just me....this was literally my struggle when I start over thinking what to play next to the crowd, I dive into my library and over complicate my song choice. What I've started doing is leaving my 1tb+ library at home on the desktop, and I only take what I need for each gig based on the gig type i.e. 21st, school dance, wedding or small bar/club, the reality is at most your only going to have a 6hr slot to play content. At the moment I DJ via my tablet, phone or flash drive if using Club gear, so I load everything up before I leave(also good idea to have a back up flash drive incase 1 gets corrupt, damaged, lost or stolen)
I feel like this needs to be re-worded to be "how to sort your Dj library from your personal listening library" there's a LOT of music in my personal library that I would never DJ with cause its either so far out there it wouldn't be known to the average person or its live band and thus the tempo fluctuates. My usual questions to ask is: 1. Is the song known? 2. Will it work with xyz group of music? 3. Do I enjoy it? 4. Can I be creative with it? If any of those questions are No it usually gets left in my personal library however I do try to transition between all my songs, most just don't work out.
this reminds me: Need to delete a bunch of "Thriller" remixes. This video is great advice. It's so easy to hoard music nowadays. I still struggle to limit myself when I'm in the moment downloading files.
In regards to your final question: just getting started learning to DJ, and not having any notable offline music collection, I jumped at Algoriddim djay Pro and its Spotify integration. And with Serato now offering Tidal and SoundCloud Go+ integration, I got myself a Mixon 4 controller which comes with Serato DJ Pro, and signed up for Tidal. Only downside is that I can't seem to find more DJ friendly remixes (with longer intros) of popular music.
As a mobile DJ I feel that wiping out hundreds of tracks really isn’t necessary since my workflow is to build custom playlists for every gig I play. I have found that I stay within those playlists about 90% of the time. The other 10% is spent in other playlists I have or doing a search in Rekordbox. This NOT to say that the advice has no value to me!! Like your 20000 song library, I have multiple copies of some songs. I need to go through and choose the one or two copies of a song and eliminate the other 5, 10 (or more!!!) of that song. This could be made easier with better tools in Rekordbox for making and cross-checking playlists. Carlo - I agree with you that we tend to accumulate way too much stuff in our music libraries.
I have an idea, I know it’s pretty random but what if you put all of your “20k” tracks on to a hard drive and then made “playlists/set lists” and pull the tracks out of your hard drive (all depending on which sets you play/ which club or type of set your gunna play) so if you need the tracks then they are still stored on your hard drive :) ❤️
DJ Carlo Atendido no problem :) thank you for your advice! Nye set coming up so even though I’ve been djing for 5 years I’ve been watching your vids for advice :)
When considering a track to add to your library, ask yourself: "Am I really going to play this more than just a few times? Is it better than (or as good as) most of what I play already?"
Yes that is very true! We go on a virtual shopping spree for music thinking we will use most of them but in fact we tendo to stick to the same songs because they always work. Thanks for the video Carlo.. I will start decluttering my laptop ASAP.
A cds full capacity is like 80 minutes how hard is it make a few playlists to fit each genre and crowd and bring enough to mix and leave all the other shit at home on your external harddrives. If your only djing 5 hours you gonna need about only 10 cds worth of material for that genre of the hottest billboard or underground stuff of whats hot for that crowd and a few to switch it up to more in case the crowd aint reacting good to what your mixen as far as body language. It aint that hard.
This is really great advice. I have around 4000 songs and I find myself looking through songs that I probably will never play to get to the ones I will play. Let the purge begin!
I started hoarding music long ago but I have been keeping my DJ library as minimal as I can because it seems that Serato loads quicker with a smaller library to scan. My personal library is another story... I like many different genres and song types and most of those, while being a great listen, are not suitable to perform. Nothing gets deleted. it just gets moved out of my DJ library. Great vid and good advice. My first (DJ) gig is tomorrow! Thanks Carlo. You have been great help and your kind replies are always motivating.
Thank you so much! 4 yrs ago I fell I love with chess. I've played nearly everyday since , I absorbed everything I could on chess through stories from talking to people, books, videos on the internet, studying famous or interesting played games and even old chess movies. I imitated and drew inspiration from the greatest players in the past and the current top players. I'm almost rated 2000 now and it's been a long road, but the point I bring this up is DJing is something I have the same passion for, and I look at you as one of those people that I can imitate and draw inspiration from. So again, I cannot thank you enough.
That means a LOT Buddha! I wish you the best on your DJ journey, and man, to combine that with a passion for chess? You're golden bud! Keep drawing in those good vibes, and never stop learning!
@@djcarlo thank you! I love how you mock the idea of a DJ lol it relaxes the viewer and lets them know that even though DJing is serious business we're supposed to be having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously.
I actually started out only using tidal, it was a great way for me to get into djing without a huge investment, now I’ve moved onto downloading songs, but it’s still nice to never have to deny a request by having tidal ready.
in regards to the last question - I simply don't get how there are no extra-premium plans on streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify etc that let you download and play streaming music even without internet connection? is it because it might be more crackable? maybe. but if anyone wants to download mp3 illegally it's already easy to do anyways! finally, I feel like the future is inevitable, and that future is to have streaming services wide open to DJs to play.
I have over 17k songs and couldn't agree more. I've been contemplating doing this for while but figured it would take a year to go through them all. Must be done😒 Love the content
Absolutely! It's a herculean task, but once you actually git'r'done, then you'll find a much cleaner space to work in! No more scrambling with 50 remixes that don't work hahaha
I have about 6000 tracks in my library. I play mostly Old School, R & B, and Funk, but I have my music in play lists, and usually I'll make a play list for each gig. And just have to go to the library for requests, or for a spur of the moment mix. But if you know your tracks and keep your library organized, and put some time into making your playlists. You should never have a problem finding a track.
@@djcarlo Tell me about it. I get nauseous sometimes when realizing how long it has been. Thanks Carlo. Your lessons help me stay up to date. You are the man!
This is a tough sell coming from a DJ who has the Star Wars theme in their crates... that is why us beginners think we gotta download tons of music lol. But I think something RUclipsrs forget that some markets are REALLY WEIRD, out of touch, but diverse... for instance in my market... there is a lot of people who like country music, the general culture doesnt care at all about what a dj does... or how they do it. Which is true for a lot of places. But in my market, its easy to have a country crowd, a punk rock crowd, a hip hop crowd, an edm crowd, a young crowd, an old school crowd. And a crowd that absolutely despises music ALL IN THE SAME VENUE... and its a very KARENIZED culture here. So it doesnt matter if the DJ is amazing... people want to pick the music here... every club gig is like a weird wedding gig also... i started out just bringing music I liked of every genre I could think of. But crowds turned on me simple for not having specific songs they requested... even when I knew those songs were absolute vibe killers... so I went on a download spree... I began fulfilling those requests...and even though the requests were awful, the crowds responded to me more BECAUSE I played what they asked... it really messed with my head. I blamed my inexperience for sure... which is a valid concern...here... its one dj per club, per night...and clubs here are very hesitant to become too genre specific....so its a ton of truly open format. With few exceptions...in the exceptional gigs, the subject matter of this video is VERY TRUE... but in general, in my market...you DO NEED 50k or more songs... because all the crowds here turn on you if you dont play their obscure requests... and they are very bold...they dont want to let the DJ control them... for real... they want THEIR music heard... i hate it here for that... but ive done quite a few venues at this point and it remains true at all of them... i have the genres to appease any crowd. But the requests are inevitable... and the animosity for not fulfilling one is also dangerously real... its really terrible because when I go to other cities in my country...they want the DJ to decide the music. But in my city... no one can seem to let that happen... so I cant even get booked unless I boast a pretty big selection of songs... maybe I just suck as a dj...maybe the culture here sucks in my city... I could make a great case for either being true... one thing for sure is... I get a request at every gig, for songs Ive never even heard of... and if I dont at least have some of them and play them...then in my market, I am a trash dj... juke boxes are popular here...not DJs.
I'm the old school type. You never know when the music streaming website's server goes down or the WiFi stops working and take your gig down with it. Btw, I have close to 1k songs which I'm deleting because all of them are in 128kbps. And thank you for another informative video, Carlo!
This is an excellent video. I have exactly 27,322 tracks. And your right it is information overload. I needed this advice. I have a decision to make. Thanks!
i wish i would have heard this before downloading 8gb of music from record pools lol. honestly though ive already run into the problem where ill play for 1-2 hours, then ill start noticing that im running out of songs to play. even while bouncing from genre to genre and folder to folder, ill run out of ideas on what to mix in and what would sound good next so i end up just ending my set early. oh also i just organize my genres in folders so theres not like 5000 tracks all in one folder lol, and for some genres ill add them to the "Hard" or "Chill" folder within the Genre folder, which basically tells me if the Songs gonna have a big heavy drop, or almost no drop at all.
every day I'm checking the music in Spotify and sound clouds.... listing them and at the weekend, download all of them, update the playlist, set cues and ready to go.
Again more solid advice! Thanks DJ! I have never dj'd from any streaming service. But I do have a rather large library that could use some trimming. I just cannot seem to bring myseld to delete my music. Most of the music are tracks that I have ripped from my CDs. And a lot of it is old school rap and funk. Maybe one day I will have the courage to delete some music.
@@djcarlo I am practicing and working with a local DJ that has way more experience than I have. He gives me advice and tips which helps me to develop my skills. I am supposed to play a set tomorrow night at an event that is held by another DJ. I am kind of stoked about it. But then again I have reservations at the same time. He asked me to bring my equipment (speakers, stands, video monitors, etc...) which is cool. But I do not want to bring all of my equipment to only play a short set. I need to be playing a couple of hours to justify bringing all of my gear.
What I do. Is when part of my music is becoming non playable, I remove them from my laptop and copy them into an external hard drive. I won't have them all mixed up with my to go play songs but I still have them available in case I come across one of those events or situations where I need to find something specific.
This makes total sense if you are just a nightclub type of DJ but if you do both nightlife and private events, having a catalog is important because you can pull from similar previous private events.
Now I have thousands upon thousands of songs, but what I do is keep them in a home drive and then when it comes time for a gig/mix/show whatever, I just pick 1/3 of the songs I love the best, 1/3 of tracks that can be good filler/transition songs, and 1/3 special b sides or songs people know. I love having the large selection so I make sure I don't repeat mixes all the time and I play songs that fit. Like I'll happily play a kelly price b side that fits within the mix because I know its in key and it can fit to the atmosphere. I usually wouldn't seek it out, but since its in my library I can pick it out when I want to. It helps with playing b sides or unknown tracks and seeing different reactions
That's a great way of dealing with the music too! Just so you don't accidentally lose anything and kick yourself out of frustration later. I like that method Brandon!
I'll play anything that I think needs to be added to my library for sure! I's happened a lot of times I couldn't get a track on Beatport so I tried other ways to get my hands on it!
I’ve been saying this for years: my ultimate goal is to make my crates as small as possible.
The digital era has made it so easy to get your hands on a lot of music, but in the process a lot of DJs forget to properly judge if a song should be added to their crates.
I have been deleting tracks daily.
the best thing is to have what you use most according of where are you going to play and what your client will request when they hire you ...is pointless to have to much music you will not use it ....a pendrive with extra crates just in case is a good option
My crates hold about 90 records
me too
Yes! It is better to have a smaller crate full of powerful gems than an extensive one full of extra clutter...
We have 4500 songs, but we have them all organized into folders based on genre :)
I have sub genre folders based on the 'Feel' of the songs and/or applicable and suitable situations to be played.
I find by situational crates are better than genere crates . Time of night / whos in / risers / breaks/ bangers ect
Style Points smart!
That’s what i do
I personally don't only do folder by gender, but also by energy. Some track are way more powerful (like thy sound more hard) and some sounds more soft, it's also a good way to know. And for the song in between you can create a folder middle. Like I have hardstyle hard (mostly repetitive and high energy songs with less melodie variation, hardstyle medium (basically more melodic and with some good part of kicks with melodies) and hardstyle calm (mostly more melodic songs which have an orchestrale parts or more calme vocal part)
That always helped me a lot.
And for more common song I just use folder like 80's to 2000's most known (wich mean literally everyone knows these songs) 80s to 2000's less known, and 80s to 2000's transition (wich means song that can be use between gender like rock and 80's, or Remix of popular song that could be use as a transition after or before 80's another more electronic gender (like deep house or basse house or whatever)
By doing these you're not only more organise, but you can have all the right Playlist on the right time on your computer, when I'm doing à 80's party I don't take with me all the hardstyle stuff, and it's way better like that.
Keep up the amazing videos and thank you!!

what i think is good, is to have a large home library and when going to gigs prepare a selection. Makes things much easier.
This here is a blueprint my friend.
I have "only" 400 songs in my library but sometimes I feel that many of them are kind of useless ^^
Dl some song that can be use in all occasions.. and better to dl a song that anyone knows .. kysa sa iilan lang nkaka alam.. baka marami ang nakaka relate.. kahit millennials or matanda
Hey 400 songs is better than none at all right gotta start somewhere 😁
Maybe try some different song.. make a folder for each... wht is for hip hop. For party. Like that
Honestly, i use 1 folder
I update my folder before every gig.
Thats how i do it
If im doing anything wrong, let me know how i can improve myself
Good on you mate! Keep up the good work!
Smart 👍
The best part of your channel is that you interact with your subscribers
@@djcarlo you are the one who helped me start my dj career along with production as you launched the 5 mistake video just a day before my first gig!
Thanks for sharing your experience! And for validating the point that I raised! Cheers!
I AGREE SIR.
Keeping clean and well organized crates with all the best of the best eliminates the need to delete anything. Just keep all the junk in one drawer.
I have 645 of old skool Hip Hop and R& B songs and play my songs from Soundcloud in my Dj Library very good video though DJ CARLO🤘🏾👍🏾👏🏾
That's a good collection!
it depend, if you are a wedding dj, you must have every song lol
Facts lol
Just have The Chicken Dance and It Takes 2 on deck and you're good as a wedding dj.
DJ ScottyMaxx i agree with you on this 💯
True that. Wedding DJ is a different thing.
Nice! Are you planning on producing?
Hey could you share where did you set your hot cues. Like in what part of the songs? Like in intro, drops outro chorus?
Where do you get music?
Instead of deleting unnecessary songs, I made an archive folder (with many playlists in it) and moved unnecessary songs to the folder. In my case I have total around 6000 songs. 4000 songs are for DJing and another 2000 are in the archive folder. But I need to work more to move songs that I don’t need. It takes time, but makes it easier on the gigs
I dumped nearly one TB on a server.
But sometimes when a bunch of guys ask for a rare one and than you look it up can say: yep, got it feels also cool 😎
I sort them by year and favourites
@@kharilester I got my own cloud
Thanks I been ranting that like forever. Selector not collector.
Oh em! That's so personalized! That can do the trick!
24k in my iTunes library.
About 5k on my hard drive I actually to DJ
Only about 1200 I use for actual mixes lol
Quality over quantity learn to read the crowd and set your levels right,
I just stay I'm my lane 90s Hip Hop rnb and old school samples......I love house music but I let the House DJs do their thing and they let me do mine !
This is so relatable to me… I began trimming my selection a few weeks ago and everything its going really well... Less stress for the eyes and the brain
Very true! I really took time off to do that. No use in having a million songs, when all you need are a thousand. Save that hard drive space!
Around 8000 I want to have less, but I feel bad when I sort them out.
i get a bajillion free edit packs bc i signed up for multiple mailing lists, so if idk what songs to play, i just hit “sort by bpm” and find a good song around the range im playing at lol
Best to sift through them and see which songs you really use!
I’m a beginner and have 50 songs in my main playlist, it’s a mix of Avicii, Kygo, Martin GarriX, David Guetta, and some other popular songs/Artists, but I mix them very good cause I listen to those songs constantly🤟
Thanks for watching! Woot woot! Let me know how it goes for you!
a good advice for djs: know your songs before you play them
Me and my buddy had a charity gig in my home town. He had his Music all sorted out on Spotify while I had it all locally downloaded.
Shortly before the Gig was up to start his Internet went out for some reason and I had to take the first two shifts alone.
Learned a lesson right there.
@@djcarlo And thank you for answering! Have a nice day!
Id rather have too many that then not have enough but i get what you're saying! thanks for sharing

@@djcarlo are you on drugs mate? You answered every fucking comment..

Just my hobby 👍
Im new to the actual sense of DJ music mixing. With that said, most of the events I have provided music entertainment for had been for family gatherings, friend get togethers and neighborhood gatherings. There is a good feeling that comes with being able to play something the crowd hasn't heard in a very long time and having them acknowledge that it was awesome to reminisce. Ultimately that is the goal of music i guess. Obviously depending on the venue you are hosting I still believe more is better, at least for me it is.
Good job buddy! Keep up the good work!
Yeah bud! Don't strain your hard drive too much with 100 remixes of one song, when 5 (or less!) are enough, depending on your style of DJing.
Wow! What a solid workflow you got there! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
I have around 2000 songs. I do a lot of different types of events so many of them are needed. I wouldn't want more than that.
Currently got just about 100+ songs in my library. I add songs i like, i dont need thousands, i mostly play songs that i produce myself. I would love to dj with a streaming service, but i can't afford it lol
"Nice Track list"
Han Solo died! Damn it
I took your advice about deleting music - spent 3 weekends cleaning up my music. Went from 16k tracks down to 4,700 tracks. Best DJ advice I've ever received. Thank you 👍
Helps me soo much! (I only have 8 songs so far)
You should reduce your library by about 75%. 🤔 Those two songs will be bangers. 😂😂
All you need is one song amd play it on repeat. Don't stress it bro
This video was right on. Another issue is that as you are getting into this overload you start to forget the songs that you really really liked.
If you are a wedding or party dj you need at least 1 million songs 😂
Hy! Great advice! As TLM says, digital environment is now more and more friendly with Djs so I use a base of music the essentials on the hard drive, a backup of this on my external drive and 50% of my library is based on streaming services where I organized playlists. Have a great day, salute from România
That's great Unnu! Really glad you have your entire library in order!
none😭 i use the tidal and soundcloud feature on serato

Spotify (that is the max number of songs you can save on Spotify currently): 10,000

All the music is organized and tagged
I would LOVE to mix from spotify. It would save me so much trouble of saving songs to playlists and then having to download them and such later on

Wow 👏 thanks a lot Dj Carlo. This helps a lot. I have about 6000 songs but now with this tutorial I’ve started selected my best playlist for gigs. Thanks once again
DJ Carlo Atendido you are welcome
40,000 songs in my library. The though of deleting or organizing is terrifying to me.
Same! At least 40k I have no idea where I would even start
I decided to just keep what was an actual single.
Can I borrow 40,000 of your songs lol
omg dude, this is or was totally me! glad to know this wasn't just me....this was literally my struggle when I start over thinking what to play next to the crowd, I dive into my library and over complicate my song choice.
Thanks!
Hey buddy can you give us a playlist of EDM songs that we can play and practice.
Like some party or pub songs
How can I contact you sir I really need some tutorial and I wished to shoe something to you
I feel like this needs to be re-worded to be "how to sort your Dj library from your personal listening library"
there's a LOT of music in my personal library that I would never DJ with cause its either so far out there it wouldn't be known to the average person or its live band and thus the tempo fluctuates.
My usual questions to ask is:
1. Is the song known?
2. Will it work with xyz group of music?
3. Do I enjoy it?
4. Can I be creative with it?
If any of those questions are No it usually gets left in my personal library however I do try to transition between all my songs, most just don't work out.
The best online master! ❤️
this reminds me: Need to delete a bunch of "Thriller" remixes. This video is great advice. It's so easy to hoard music nowadays. I still struggle to limit myself when I'm in the moment downloading files.
got 7.000+ track, and yeah that's something that I need to slimming down
I use a "box libary" that is out of my serato files to put all that music that I no play , but do not delete anything for any request
I think I have around 3 to 4k songs.... I feel like I need maybe another thousand.... albeit, I play spanish and English.
Check out my video on where DJ's get their music!
When considering a track to add to your library, ask yourself:
"Am I really going to play this more than just a few times? Is it better than (or as good as) most of what I play already?"
Well said my dude! Space is valuable!
This guy has 20 000 songs

Actually, way more than that. DJ's usually catalog many many thousands. It's part of our job. 😉🎧🎶⌨️💻
"Hey you music guy, can you play "One" from METALLICA!!! Sorry just deleted "One". WTF!!! You deleted Metallica!!!!........FML

I’m a starter btw
in regards to the last question - I simply don't get how there are no extra-premium plans on streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify etc that let you download and play streaming music even without internet connection?
is it because it might be more crackable? maybe. but if anyone wants to download mp3 illegally it's already easy to do anyways!
finally, I feel like the future is inevitable, and that future is to have streaming services wide open to DJs to play.
I guess about 500 or so, all ripped from RUclips 😂😅
Yooooooo thank you soo much for your reply!!😱😱
I have over 17k songs and couldn't agree more. I've been contemplating doing this for while but figured it would take a year to go through them all. Must be done😒
Love the content
I too realized recently that I have over 25,000 songs & started to delete many. But can’t delete hip hop classics or my Motown or my Latin classics.
I went from 25 thousand songs to a little over 9000 . Couldn’t be happier. Only download what you need it’s that’s simple.

Dang, that's a lot of music to cut out! Good luck Marco!
When I DJ'd at raves, I kept every song I got, but I only carried a pool of 80 songs or so to pick from on the fly.
It was a bit easier to do that when I was playing, because controllers were just starting to get popular. We had the tried and true CDJ 900's.
@Leonard jeremy I ripped them off from SoundCloud. Though some of them does say 320kbps but I will start from the scratch anyway.
you make perfect sense. there are a few thousand songs i can own at one time, but 80% of those tracks just dont get the attention they deserve
DJ Carlo Atendido it’s kinda sad for all those producers that have made some wicked tracks tho.

It sounds like you've already got things well off in terms of organization, but I'd say you may still need to build up your library a bit
every day I'm checking the music in Spotify and sound clouds.... listing them and at the weekend, download all of them, update the playlist, set cues and ready to go.
Consistency every weekend will get you into places! Congrats! And thanks for watching the video too!
@@djcarlo I think you are great! I have learned so much from you!!
You don't have to delete them. Just make a crate/playlist of the ones you're actually going to play. You can still keep the full library as a backup.
I's happened a lot of times I couldn't get a track on Beatport so I tried other ways to get my hands on it!
thanks for sharing your opinion on it! I'm glad you'll do that.
Awesome advice! I've started deleting a lot of tracks I never play and don't ever need. And yes it really did help a lot on my programming.
