I can't tell if this is implied to be what actually happened or if it's just me but during the summoning when they start singing right after they say the names and it looks like they're starting to panic, I sorta interpreted that as Pokey briefly making them sing all TGWDLM style as he entered the material plane. Idk if that makes sense or not but it's an interesting thought. It just looks to me like in that moment they're actually AWARE that they're singing and it's kinda freaking them out. Edit: Also another thing I noticed is that when they first start singing like that, the light on them is blue, which is Pokey's color. Again no idea if it's intentional but it's a fun little headcanon I think.
I see the reason that it starts with Blue is Pokotho is always shown as "the first" of the LiB. And the colors cycle in the order they were invoked. That's a really cool theory though!
Starkid has been my obsession for years now, this entire musical has been my new obsession for the past three days and The Summoning has been my Life and Love for the past two days, I listen to it on Repeat and intent on dressing as the Lords in Black with my friends for next year's Halloween 💙💜💖💛💚
The summoning is expertly done. They have the lords in black down, they click so well how they ought to, in all their appearances. This song especially helps you get the whole "Spoiled children with god-like power" thing they've got going on. I really like the lyric "Babble the spell that gets it done, babble it on command!" because calling their summoning call "The spell that gets it done" when just a scene ago, it was distinctly pointed out that it's NOT a spell, but a ritual. The mayor says that rather specifically. But they don't give a shit. It's the shit the humans say to give them shit they want. It's the spell that gets it done. The Lords in Black do not care half as much about their own power and influence on earth as humans do. They don't take the very magic they brought into our world seriously at all, while humans regard it with shock, fear, and respect. Same with "Pay the price, or FUCK OFF." They swear a significant amount, like a child with a new word, and they genuinely could not care less about you if you don't intend to give them anything. This is also why I really like Grace's flip on it later, "I paid the price, now fuck off." It feels like she's realized that these things, they may be powerful, but they're people, flawed, and most importantly, they're immature. They've never been told no, never had to reason with anyone, and could always get what they wanted by threatening people, taking it outright, or otherwise giving them no choice. Grace flips it back on them, and they comply (although the deal was not fulfilled in the way they expected) and this gives her the false confidence she needs to push her into using their power to claim the souls of those she deems impure. Of course, just because they're immature and imperfect doesn't mean a human teenager can actually outwit them. They're older than any of us, hell, maybe older than the species. They might be petty and overconfident, but they are still capable of things that humans can't fathom. It's not the first time that kind of thing has been done, but I really like how starkid is doing it. Makes them as antagonists so much more frustrating, because they're more powerful than the protagonists almost always (of course webby is on their level I think but everyone else) so they can't be directly punished for their bullshit, and they can act annoying in the cruelest ways imaginable and no one can do anything about it. No doubt, their downfall (should they have one) will be all the more satisfying for it.
I love in the lords in black song how in the lead up to Steph offering her phone the music in the background reacts like the lords in black will burst into song again so when they just yell at her instead it makes it even funnier
I always love Starkid songs, but MAN the music in this one is especially incredible. The Summoning and High School Is Killing Me are my personal highlights - I put them up there with Kick it Up a Notch
bury the bully is such a good song because you obviously expect it to be a minor song but the acidentals (Sharps and flats not in the key) make it so much better
my personal fav line was "i used to dance... i used to dance...." i know ruth is meant to be playing a character in just for once but it tells us so much about her right before she dies so it stuck with me :( i love her. also i love how the lyrics/melody from cool as i think i am repeat in nerdy prudes must die and just for once. pete richie and ruth .. :((
I think this has the best music in the whole hatchetfield series and I think it's because of how layered and intricate the harmonies are. It really really adds so much dimension
my problem is that I want to hear every song simultaneously and individually and enjoy them all at the same time but I can’t do that 😀 also I’m so happy Lauren got to sing Just This Once, her characters are always so brilliant she so deserves a song with this kind of depth
Thank you for including the drums part at the beginning of the last verse of the summoning it makes me stim and dance and yell and scream I love it so much (also thank you for including just for once I love that song so much and it seems no one else understands the layers and nuances it has. JUST FOR ONCE GET BEHIND ME ILL PROTECT YOU)

My top 5 are probably: • *Cool As I Think I Am* - I love how much Pete's character shines through in this song, and the melody is just ✨mwah✨ • *Dirty Girl* - Angela's "I'm a- I'm a good girl..." with Will's "hungry for more~" being the echoing vocals has been stuck in my head for DAYS NOW. Plus..."Daddy needs a taste of that dirty soup" made me feel things I am ashamed of 😳 • *Nerdy Prudes Must Die* - WILL'S VOCAALS DURING THE CHORUS AND THE "I want you to repeat after me" BIT?! ✨AMAZING.✨ Not to mention Jon's "I'M NOT A LOSER!!" - holy HECK, Jon! • *Hatchet Town* - the harmonising when the cast sings "SOMEONE'S GOT THEIR HAND ON THE HATCHET HANDLE" and the backing melody is my favourite part of that song • *Cool As I Think I Am (Reprise)* - Steph and Pete indirectly confessing their love for each other, Mariah's saddened "You're not as cool as you think you are" and Joey's "But you're as smart as I KNOW you are", and the final ("final") gunshot? OH MY DEAR *HEART* 😭
I will never be over how good the soundtrack is for this show. I mean it's hit me like a ton of bricks. There's so many moments where it just scratches my brain just right and the end gives me chills. Every. Time.
If you listen to High School Is Killing Me from the soundtrack, you can actually hear the melody of "If I can be cool I will know that I'm not a loser" at the beginning of it.
1:06 The comment about being a 2023 graduate made me chuckle. I’m a 2021 graduate, much like they are in the musical. NPMD made me realize that, honestly, I kinda miss high school sometimes. Covid ruined my last two years of high school and I wish I had gotten the chance to enjoy it.

I love the shoulder shimmy they do at " you gamble it all on the roll of the dice", that song seriously rewrote my brain chemistry
This is an appreciation post for Jon and Joey's voices because I really feel like they've grown so much even just from Black Friday and I love it
I always love Starkid songs, but MAN the music in this one is especially incredible. The Summoning and High School Is Killing Me are my personal highlights - I put them up there with Kick it Up a Notch
The summoning scene gives me massive Spring Awakening vibes WHICH I ADORE
Honestly "best of you" is really 2000s-10s teen movie songs a little rock with a big dance number about being together at homecoming
1:36 one thing about kim is that she will be SINGING it
* Okay exCUSE ME WHERE ARE MARIAH’S HIGH NOTES IN BULLY THE BULLY?????
* She fully SLAYED and you didn’t include it???????
SORRY OMG UR SO RIGHT
bury the bully is such a good song because you obviously expect it to be a minor song but the acidentals (Sharps and flats not in the key) make it so much better
I absolutely LOVE the ending of Dirty Dudes Must Die. I dont know how to explain it but I always get butterflies when I hear the ending lol
my personal fav line was "i used to dance... i used to dance...." i know ruth is meant to be playing a character in just for once but it tells us so much about her right before she dies so it stuck with me :( i love her. also i love how the lyrics/melody from cool as i think i am repeat in nerdy prudes must die and just for once. pete richie and ruth .. :((
Jeff came in pissed off as hell, pen was on fire the entire time 🔥✍️🔥
I think this has the best music in the whole hatchetfield series and I think it's because of how layered and intricate the harmonies are. It really really adds so much dimension
The harmonies are always great in starkid shows, but something about this show's just hit so SWEET, maybe it's just new sound equipment?
Y’all seeing Joey sing in this and then going back and seeing him sing in like Me and My Dick is insane like I feel like I grew up with him
okay i think this vid made me realize how genius they incorporated that ONE PHRASE INTO SO MUCH SONGS... amazing fr i love this soundtrack sm
The opening song is so aggressively Be More Chill. When I first watched it I was like “did I accidentally click on a BMC compilation??”
5:43 I NEVER NOTICED THAT THEY WERE SINGING THAT IN THE BACKTGROUND OMIGOSH I LOVE THAT MOMENT EVEN MORE NOW
Yeees! Just for once gives me falsettos vibes! It's totally I'm breaking down coded!
for sure!! glad i'm not the only one who thinks so
my problem is that I want to hear every song simultaneously and individually and enjoy them all at the same time but I can’t do that 😀 also I’m so happy Lauren got to sing Just This Once, her characters are always so brilliant she so deserves a song with this kind of depth
So I guess most of us have replayed the summoning an unhealthy amount of times
Thank you for including the drums part at the beginning of the last verse of the summoning it makes me stim and dance and yell and scream I love it so much (also thank you for including just for once I love that song so much and it seems no one else understands the layers and nuances it has. JUST FOR ONCE GET BEHIND ME ILL PROTECT YOU)
REAL
Bryce's part is epic in "Hatchet Town", but I can't resist:
"I've never known darker times and I covered the protest live at the Hatchetfield Kennel....
👨🏻 I AM DAN REYNOLDS! 👨🏻
Thank you for splicing together the vocal portions of The Summoning! I keep replaying it over and over :)
Omg I really thought there was something wrong with me lmaooo
The Falsettos thing is so true! I couldn't stop thinking about it throughout the whole song. It's so good!!
The "I'm fucking here, he's fucking her!" really does have "I'm breaking down" vibes.
1:06 Mariah's voice carrying over the top of everyone else's sound gives me chills every time.
@@VivaLaDnDLogs THIS. EVERY TIME.
You are so real about the falsettos vibes ive been thinking that ever since i saw that song
Hot take: 'granger danger' walked so 'loved you like i could' could run
Every time a compilation gets to The Summoning and adds a caption saying they could have just included the whole song I just go "do it do it do it do it you know you want to"
You did me dirty (ha) by cutting off after "wHO ON OCCASION GETS DIRTY" so I just yelled DIRTY DIRTY GIIIIIIRL alone in my room at 3 in the morning 💀💀💀
Safe to say Will, Bryce and Kim (and literally everyone else) fucking KILLED this musical like omg Jeff Blim is so incredible 😭😭
Cool As I Think I Am Reprise has me sobbing three times in a row
4:13 - Actually, I think the official line is "BEAN SCHOOL"
but oh my gosh i ADORE this video, thank you for showcasing all of these underrated moments (and making me realize how often the "if i can finally be cool" motif was used!)
-Paintspot Infez
Wasabi
“We’ll kill you-“ “KILL YOUR ASS!” Is my favorite line in the entire show
"WHO ON OCCASION GETS DIRTY!"
"NO! We're gonna be cool beans"
As much as I love that final verse of Dirty Girl, that transition was godly
hell yeah i am replaying summoning i must have listend to it like 6 time the day the musical came out
FINALLY A 🎶THEN AGAIN IM DERANGED🎶 ENJOYER ITS SO GOOD
all the songs in this musical are so good
i dont know if anyone else noticed this, but in the intro for the very first song, the melody on the piano is the same notes/rythms as
"i'm not a loser, the darkness will spare my soul"
idk if anything other than that matches up but when i rewatched npmd i lost my mind
ive seen so many people shitting on lauren's solo and i dont understand it !!!! the first time i watched it i was blown away... and i 100% agree it was giving flasettos the whole time frl
Bury the Bully and Bully the Bully got me dancing....
Hatchet Town gave goosebumps
AND ALL THE LOVE SONGS OR SOLOS WITH PETE AND STEPH GOt ME EMOTIONAL
I hate the gun scene so much T~T "If I loved you..." I CANTTTT ITS SO SAD
And that helluva'n opening nnumber
My top 5 are probably:
• *Cool As I Think I Am* - I love how much Pete's character shines through in this song, and the melody is just ✨mwah✨
• *Dirty Girl* - Angela's "I'm a- I'm a good girl..." with Will's "hungry for more~" being the echoing vocals has been stuck in my head for DAYS NOW. Plus..."Daddy needs a taste of that dirty soup" made me feel things I am ashamed of 😳
• *Nerdy Prudes Must Die* - WILL'S VOCAALS DURING THE CHORUS AND THE "I want you to repeat after me" BIT?! ✨AMAZING.✨ Not to mention Jon's "I'M NOT A LOSER!!" - holy HECK, Jon!
• *Hatchet Town* - the harmonising when the cast sings "SOMEONE'S GOT THEIR HAND ON THE HATCHET HANDLE" and the backing melody is my favourite part of that song
• *Cool As I Think I Am (Reprise)* - Steph and Pete indirectly confessing their love for each other, Mariah's saddened "You're not as cool as you think you are" and Joey's "But you're as smart as I KNOW you are", and the final ("final") gunshot? OH MY DEAR *HEART* 😭
I will never be over how good the soundtrack is for this show. I mean it's hit me like a ton of bricks. There's so many moments where it just scratches my brain just right and the end gives me chills. Every. Time.
The summoning is actually 80% of my personality
jeff said his inspiration for "best of you" was I2I from the goofy movie so you are absolutely correct that it has 90s disney vibes!
If i loved you gives me MAJOR take me or leave me rent vibes and I love it
If you listen to High School Is Killing Me from the soundtrack, you can actually hear the melody of "If I can be cool I will know that I'm not a loser" at the beginning of it.
jon's "i'm not a loser!" i keep singing it!!!! its on repeat !!!!!!!
God the opening number just pulled me in… like I wasn’t expecting just how much of a bop it was! I feel like there is something so tangibly Jeff Blim in every song in NPMD and it’s SOOO good like the chord progressions and harmonies and rhythms are so creative. I just enjoy this music
did anyone else get Nightmare Before Christmas vibes during the Lords of Black song? like to me it was giving Kidnap Sandy Claws, maybe its why i love it so much
yooo !!! you're so right !!
YOUR SO RIGHT WHAT?????? THATS WHY I LIKE THE SUMMONING SO MUCH I SUPPOSE, KIDNAP THE SANDY CLAWS IS LEGIT MY FAVORITE TNBC SONG-
This is both my favorite musical in the story and soundtrack. The harmonies in this show and even just the singing just hits so hard.
FINALLY SOME WHO FELT THE FALSETTOS VIBES
5:57 the choreography for hatchet town is *chef’s kiss*
finally some literal monster appreciation
Did you know that during just for once at about 7:48 in the background you hear the melody from when they sing "if I can finally be cool I will know that I'm not a loser"
actually every song in this was a banger though
