2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatch RS - Redline: Reviews

- With sleek styling, a spacious rear seat and cargo area, and standard turbo power, the all-new Cruze Hatchback may just be the vehicle to put Chevy back at the top of your list when looking for a modern compact car. With a diesel coming for 2018, it looks as if Honda, Toyota, and Mazda should have something to worry about. Just be prepared to pay up for one at the dealer.

As an owner of a 2018 Cruze hatch, full package, smart key, and turbo.. this car is one of the best cars I’ve ever owned and driven.
Still like it?
How is it now? Buying a 2017 for my daughter with 150,000 on itnow? Buying a 2017 for my daughter with
she still going strong?
@@nightcrawler2099 ill be purchasing one soon!
Just purchased a Cruze LT Sedan with the RS package, and Comfort packages and the Kinetic blue metallic paint option. After dealer discount of $2500 and manufactures rebate of $2500 I paid $19,625. Great score!
ggg lol
justin park Hmmm.. I have another Chevy as well. I'll bet you won't be laughing at that one. Look at my channel's video to see it.
did u get the car with cruise control?
JULIO Yes
How does he lose? GM is making excellent autos these days.
Everything he doesn’t like is why I love it and can’t wait to have one! I’m Ms. Daisy so I want something chill like this, chill yet beautiful
I accidently discovered this car (the sedan version) at the Toronto Auto Show while waiting for my kids (they were drawing pictures at another booth). So, bored, I looked around and felt smug as I looked down my nose at the Cruze and the Malibu parked side by side. Deciding I'd sit in the Cruze and mock it, I was instead, surprised. Comfortable seats, great interior. Nice styling. This is the perfect little grocery getter. I like it much better than the Civic. Now, after years of driving Toyotas, I'm now shopping for either a Cruz or Malibu.
you sound stupid
Raven James 🐃
You sir must be high
The Malibu is actually a nice car I had a few as rentals. Slow, but nice.
After experiencing gm, you’ll be back to Toyota
RS is not a sport package. It is a sport APPEARANCE package, and it always has been.
Tommy Ecotec so rice package huh? 😂
@@kerbytheslayer6181 ita not rice....are you 12?
Yup, going all the way back to the original Camaro.
Rally sport
Who cares? Its more sporty than an lt. Not everyone has to have 300hp. People buy this to save gas.
I feel like all the engine/transmission related "drawbacks" which are always mentioned in reviews about the Cruze, are why it's called "Cruze" to begin with... it's supposed to ride soft, elegant and comfortable, and not strive to appeal to sportier drivers. Simply put, the Cruze is for cruising.
WHY DIDN'T THE BOLT LOOK LIKE THIS!?
seriously this thing is good looking
Or they could have made an electric version of the cruze. Not anymore tho because #RipCruze
It's 2021 and I'm wondering the same, I mean even the Volt would have looked better in this shell.
Pretty decent and comprehensive review. I just bought me one of these in premier version (they dubbed it LTZ here in Buenos Aires, Arg), but opted in for an MT -since the one featuring automatic transmission was criticized bigtime over its ‘power lacking’ result.
Spent hours searching for professional reviews if this Cruze hatch but this one beats all of them. Thanx so much! 👍
As cheap and unimpressive the Cavalier was, it was one of the biggest sellers in the 80's and early 90's
no it wasn't. in the 90's the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic outsold the Cavalier.
@@ravenjames3873 He said "one of the biggest sellers". one of them. He didn't say the biggest seller.
i learn so much about cars from this guy it's not even funny, gotta love this channel 😃
Sounds like those birds about to attack
Jake Dobbins LOL IKR, I JUST NOTICED
I was wondering if I was hearing crows lmfao I couldn’t tell.
man, chevy has done an amazing job with this, best in class size, while still being one of the lightest entries in this segment, while offering top in class standard power. well done. not to mention that interior blows away the focus and corolla interiors with more soft touch points, more leather used, and less plastic.
well, the "shit" comment really was simple opinion, as for infotainment issues this was ill-factual and made up seeing as this system is in millions of GM vehicles, electrical issues? what? over heating cylinders??? are you kidding me. such a factually illiterate comment.
also, if even half of what you said was true it would not have better reliability than the focus and the dart according to JD power, KBB, edmunds, and consumer reports.*i will edit this in here as well*
usnews rankingsandreviews com/cars-trucks/rankings/Affordable-Compact-Cars/
KBB/consumer reports puts the cruze above the focus, dart, Golf, Subaru Impreza, Jetta and the lancer.
Liam Ross, the engine was completely redesigned for the new model Cruze. The old 1.4T LUV engine was a steaming pile of shit agreed, but this new engine actually has fixed pretty much all of the issues of the old one.
Liam Ross I have yet to see any issues like that with the new Malibu myself, though I have heard of it. I've just seen countless Sonic and Cruzes needing heads, pistons, turbos and whole engines because it's so common for then to score the cylinder walls and destroying rings lol. I see this everyday considering I work at a Chevy dealer haha, and I wouldn't touch one of those with a ten foot pole. I'm just curious to see how the new motors hold up long term because I'm already seeing every other one that comes in to my work with a leaking oil pan, but that's all I've seen personally.
Liam Ross its almost as bad as the eco boost... least reliable engines in the truck segment.
I think GM is just testing the waters whit this car hence why so little option are available. If people eat them up you can bet an SS will arrive in the near future. I'll be in line at the dealer when they do.
I really like the premier rs mode. I like the way they did everything with the car aesthetically.
When this model is a few years old, and getting long in the tooth, there will probably be a hotter version. Agree that it looks pretty good all around, maybe a little sportier than it deserves though with 153 horsepower and that rear suspension.
Mat A they are making a "sport" model. Its the rs which has a diesel engine and the manual gearbox from the cheaper version of each trim level (I think). So say goodbye to the possibility of chevy ever using that annoying hump in the middle of the floor meant for a rear driveshaft.
For chevrolet to call this car the cruze SS they would have to put in my opinion the 2.0L turbocharged thats in the 2017 camaro v4
people buy these things like hot cakes, i see these chevy cruze's everywhere.
You can thank Australia for the hatch. We designed the hatch for the first gen small Cruze and sold in in Australia and New Zealand only.
😃 WOW! WHAT A GREAT REVIEW YOU DID ON THIS......there were a couple of other vehicles to consider when my lease is up, but now I really like this Chevrolet Cruze hatchback. Thank You~ you always do a great job!
Glaring omissions is his word for this episode.
an ss version would be an amazing
C'um on! It is a Cruze, not a sport car!I don't know how many time you told us it was not sporty. Yes they made it as a nice running car.
I loved my 17 Cruze hatchback so much, i'm trading my BMW 3 Hatch for a 2019 Cruze Premier. My first one was used for Uber and Lyft (Never again!) and lasted 220,000 miles before i traded it in.
GM does not lack for very good engineers. They just have product planners that are not fully in tune with the market. There are glaring omissions that are so easily correctable.
I'd love to see an Evo 10 review. I haven't seen many good reviews on it personally. Keep up the good work.
They could have dropped the 2.0T, a manual and a sport suspension but instead they are killing it.
Nice review, Sofyan! I recently reviewed both the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback EX and the 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE. When comparing this vehicle to those entries it is fairly competitive. Fuel economy, though seems to be more in-line with the Elantra.
As far as exterior styling goes. I agree with you 100% the sedan varient of the Cruze just has awkward proportions once you move to the rear! The front end design, on the other hand, is pretty head turning! Especially, in the RS trim you showed. Also, the rear of the Cruze hatch has sort of an European look to it with its clean and somewhat undertoned flowing sculpture. The exterior styling of the Hatchback in my opionion is alot more competently styled.
When looking at the interior, the Cruze looks fairly competitive, but definetly lacks in storage when compared to some other entries.... the Civic Hatch. Also, the Elantra I reviewed, while not being a very high trim, has more of a mature and if you will sophisticated dashboard design. Don't get me wrong, though, the Cruze's dashboard looks organized, but in a way overly styled to where it looks like things where just added on without reason. For example, the over use of that piano black plastic and the chrome accenting that seems to be just a little on the flashy side.
All in all, though, the Chevy Cruze Hatchback seems like a pretty good offering in this segment. Especially when considering, passenger space, cargo volume and looks!
I cannot wait until you can do some sort of comparison with this vehicle and another vehicle in its class! Keep up the great work, Sofyan!

"The Quest To Record The Best!"
DriveAndBeDriven i strongly disagree i owened a 2015 honda civic neather me or my wife liked the interior and exterior and bought it brand new dec/2014 we only had it for 6 months before deciding we wanted a 2015 chevy cruze and still have the cruze till today way better materials and layout inside and better looking than a 2015 civic sorry!
I know you don't dabble in aftermarket tuning talk in your reviews Sofyan, but if you look up Trifecta, boy do they bring alive the powertrain combo.
I really appreciate how you use the word Unlove for both the cavalier and Cobalt because now that these new Chevys are out a lot of people are still driving those same cavalier and cobalts which are getting much more appreciated both in the casual community and the modified community. I guess the saying is true you don't know what you have till it's gone.
Great review as usual. I hope you could review the chevy sonic hatch.. Thanks.
I love everything about this car aesthetically. It's very nice looking on the outside, at least in hatchback model. I love those rims. I realize this one is the premier version. What I also really like is everything about the dashboard. I love the gauges, the chrome around the gauges, the chrome around the steering wheel, the leather seats are nice and comfortable looking. The only thing is the performance, but I know I would be fine with the performance. I think the only time I might feel I need more performance is when I have three passengers with the a/c on, other than that I don't see a problem.
Just wanted to chime in, I have yet to see an LED headlight that is actually more functional than Incandescent. Unless someone is using a whole new reflector design, LED headlights simply do not work in a standard reflector (afaik, HID use the same reflector as projectors with the one change being materials designed to withstand more heat) due to the placement of the LED on the bulb. While appearing brighter, LED bulbs lose the hot spot creating a more blanketed glow making them less useful for focusing on what is in front of you. Even some of the best kits out there suffer the same issue because of the gumstick placement of the LEDs on the light bulb.
Normal lights are still just as good as we have been using for the past century, but if you want better then step up to HID. And don't use an upgrade kit, proper HID's should have a HID housing for the much higher temps. The most cost effective way is just buying it with your next new car purchase. The cost of 2 HID housings is probably going to be 1 or 2 package grades higher.
Seems amazing that anyone over 40 is still alive after all those years of driving with $10 headlights you could replace yourself.
Back when Chevy made cars and we were allowed to go outside.
I hate those new LED lights, they are too fucking bright. They are not safe if they are blinding the other drivers. The old headlights were just fine.
The running lights are LED, the regular headlights are halogen projectors.
I own the redline rs ,like he said it not a rocket ship , but it just a nice smooth ride ,point A to point B , it got a lot nice stuff ,
Just swapped from a 19 Spark LS to a used 18 Cruze LT RS Redline, favorite car I've owned since my 08 Cobalt. Love me some chevys, don't know why really lol but damn is it a comfy upgrade and significantly smoother ride, bit faster than the Spark was but to be fair, no one's getting a Cruze for speed lol it is a very comfy, good looking (lucked out with a gloss black) imo, smooth and responsive ride compared to other hatches near the price in my area, granted it is somewhat sluggish comparatively. I prefer comfort at this point
I have one. Got it in April 2017. Best car I ever had.
How is it now? Buying a 2017 for my daughter with 150,000 on itnow? Buying a 2017 for my daughter with
Best reviews man
Not for nothing but 3-9 is how you old a wheel especially when racing on the street as you did.Great content but a coached trackday might be a good investment for you.Greetings from Canada and keep up the great work
Great review! Would you prefer the manual over automatic? I had a chance to test drive the RS 6 speed manual, and I really liked it, after re-learning how to drive stick (I kept trying to take off in 3rd). Thanks!
2:20 ish mark, what green is he talking about??
River Kressler in my ‘16 Cruze it’s more of a teal color.
I rented a 2019 Cruze in Vegas and got insane gas mileage all the way to Death Valley and back. You CAN turn the auto start-stop off. There's a button near the shifter.
In the 2019 you can turn off auto start/stop but not older models.
Excellent video review...
Informative reviews. Follow your channel. Hands on the steering wheel at all times! Would be appreciated. lol
Awesome Review Of 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. 😀
when are you uploading the Mazda 3 review?
interesting to see how long the turbo 4 will last.
Which looks more luxurious, handles the best and is more refined? Cruze hatch or mazda3 hatch?
Is it just the perspective or do you cross the solid yellow lines somewhat frequently when hitting the corners? 17:20
Watch out for motorcycles!
6:57 I read the radio as Han Solo
The car has a Bose 9 speaker sound system which is nice for a compact car. My Verano has it and has 2 subs in the back. I was in a corolla the other day and it only has two sub par speakers from the back.
Do you guys have any plans of reviewing the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer since the nameplate will vanish this year? Would be nice to see a final review of the Lancer.
Can you do a video rating all the hatchbacks you've tested?
This seems like a car you'd mod to be a more practical daily rather than doing anything over the top. I'd definitely get the power figures into the 200s just to make it a bit better when it comes to steeper hills and accelerating into traffic
153 HP with a turbo? Definitely go with the Focus.
IAmHawkeye316 has more torque and more fuel efficiency than the focus.
I own the focus
Carlos Espindola Focus RS?
IAmHawkeye316 no lmao the regular Titanium sedan.
Carlos Espindola it may have torque bit it has a stupid power curve which is very abrupt and the shifting is sluggish and just feels like shit. Like my old worn out 3 speed shifts faster than that car.
The ford focus is a bigger car than this one dont get it wrong
does passenger seat fold flat? auto brake at traffic lights? when will the Cruze hatch be offered as full EV?
Im a fan of your reviews; however a more detailed breakdown of the pros and cons of the vehicles would help.
Your reviews of vehicles with cargo capacity would be even better if you including fitting a bicycle in it. It is a major reason someone would buy a hatchback. thanks
i believe the chassis is borrowed from the new astra which kinda shows with the stiffer chassis. I believe it is designed to be able to handle big power for when the VXR or OPC comes out.
is that a Murder of Crows going off in the background of the outdoor portions of the video? XD
Are you sure it's RS? Usually Chevy labels it somewhere in the stitching or on the steering wheel. Or maybe I'm wrong haha
when are you going to review the new sonic?
literally i was going to buy the 2019 but it doesnt have a manual transmission... WTFFF
just buy a new 2018 everythings the same except for some little things like taillights anf bumpers
Seems like a nice car, but something about it I just don't quite like. The upcoming Elantra GT hatch is much more appealing to my eye inside and out, and I like that it doesn't rely on a turbo in the standard engine. That's extra repair costs later down the road I don't want.
Is that trunk cover removable? Because if not then why did they make it a hatchback??? It needs an open trunk for that!
hi, can you do a Mazda 3 GS or GT 2017 hatchback review,, thanks
It's an Astra! I was wondering what happened to the Opel Astra, the US used to have it as the Saturn Astra then the Buick Verano and now it's a Chevy Cruze. It's got the exact same face as the Holden Astra saloon in Australia slightly different rear from the Euro/Aus ones though.
I think the rs, could be had a nice manual transmission. No flappy paddle. Lol or options for these. Nice review.
BTW the 2018 version comes with cruise control. There were several upgrades done from 2017 to 2018. Thank God!
Can't turn off the auto start/stop? Deal breaker for me.
you can
Buy the manual version, it doesn't have it
I totally agree if this is true. I can't imagine not being able to turn this most retarded useless feature OFF!
1122 Boogie Boogie Ave i test drove one and that auto start stop feature was so stupid. Right as im about to stop at a light, it turns greens and the car turns off -.-
Sucks!
I have a lt sedan and find it to be pretty good being I traded in my leased mazda3. I feel the lt sedan transmission changes with how I drive. It holds the revs longer and using the so called L shift button is a joke I feel like I'm going to put my thumb threw it when I use it and that is mostly in the city and that is just to defeat the auto off. Other than that I'm happy with most of everything except the very small cup holders, I mean small. Oh all most forgot my stereo is not like the one in the tested car but the hazard button is and my volume button is right on top of the hazard button that hit every time I use the volume nob.
Can you do the 2016 accord v6 touring already please
The unloved by many, but I fucking love my Cobalt. So I'm interested in getting a Cruze and I really appreciate your in depth review.
Lol don't get one of the final ones.
I think people REALLY need to look into these Chevy sedans/hatchbacks because it offers a lot more than those very basic corollas which to me, is beyond my thought of why people buy the corollas because its soo basic. this cruze like other GM models offers wifi!! what person doesnt want that? lol....watch a movie on a road trip, get service when your stuck some place, upload pics, videos of anything when on the road...the use of wifi is endless than using up your data from your cell phone company. I think Chevy really moved up in this sedan and gives people here in the USA a lot because like everything we buy, we must go big and have a lot of useful stuff than just buying a car with A/C lol...we are in the 21st Century and we have to see these cars now as our home away from home to make sure it has most of everything we need anywhere we go, than just to buy a car with big headlights, curves in the body look, and still very basic..(camry)....
these are built in the USA too...come on, you cant tell me there is a sense of pride owning something that someone in the USA built with their two hands..
Ray A a used Toyota or Lexus with 100k will out last a new cobolt.
grin and bear it - sure
Actually these are built in Mexico, but that's alright, we're totally happy with our Cruze
Ray A have you ever of mods sir. If it’s boring, upgrade it.
Love the Focus SEL but its transmission have too many problems. This would be my choice instead.
Manual version is problem free.
Hatchbacks only have more cargo capacity than a sedan if you want to block your view out the back. If loaded to the to of the rear seat backs, the sedan actually has more cargo volume.
42 outside and you had the a/c on?
Please consider doing a review on the new chevy malibu!
like the show.just make sure to respect the speed limit.otherwise tums up.
Saw one in black yesterday, they did a great job!
My dream car ✌️✌️✌️
Why does every car reviewer have a stick up their ass about hard touch plastic? There's always gonna be plastic in cars. It's not really a negative. Also, how often do you touch the dashboard?
About the only thing I'd want in a Cruze is a more powerful powertrain option. At the very least I'd like to see a 2.0T hopefully with 210 HP at the minimum
They should offer it with the 8spd auto from the 16 Malibu since that top line now has a 9 spd
Give this thing a real compact sports car kick in a ss trim with more power & a sports suspension! Make it track/street capable with a smooth shifting 5spd & a throaty exhaust & you'll have a hit on your hands Chevy!!
what happen to the 2.0 turbo diesel?
Discontinued for new body style. Chevy promised a 1.6 diesel for 2018 which gets even better MPG and unlike a certain German company, complies with US EPA emissions without cheating.
Cruze rs? And here i was hoping for a 350hp awd hot hatch. Guess i will look else where.
My problem with GM is that they always do the bare minimum. They are all about chasing what they THINK are profits. They are no longer the trendsetters they used to be back in the 20th century and it showed with this car. I loved the Cruze. Its looks were always appealing to me. The problem however is that they thought that’s all people wanted. They improved the interior but things like adaptive cruise control are left out. They always managed to be behind the competition when it comes to their smaller cheaper cars and wondered why their sedans weren’t one of the first on people shopping list. You make it sporty looking, give it an RS trim that fools people into thinking it’s supposed to have more power, but don’t give it any. Even WHEN sedans started falling out of favor. Because obviously Toyota and the Japanese are doing something right if their sedans continue to sell despite the SUV apocalypse. I’m kinda disappointed in them because now the Malibu is gone and I’m ready to just see about another brand unless I want an suv or truck (which I can’t afford right now. Neither do I need or want it).
i feel like you talk about any car regardless of the accual price to performance and features. why would i care about the plasic when the list is avg 10k less avgly specd compaired to the other cars you mention
Can we get a review on the 2018 HB 1.4 turbo Diesel. Manual is a MUST!!!
Whisper diesel was 1.6 CDI. European Opal Astra had a Biturbo with 150hp increase of 12hp. Not sure how much more torque.
What's the name of this instrumental? It's hot
I like that shirt.
I think the Civic sedan looks better than the Cruze sedan, but my opinion is reversed when it comes to their hatch style. Chevy really nailed the styling on the Cruze hatch. The fact the Premier doesn't have HID is kind of a bummer, but LEDs seems to be the way to go for most compacts these days.
The 1.4T is fine, but lags behind the Civic 1.5T and Sentra SR Turbo; the engine is too tuned for low-mid end (the automatic ALWAYS short shifts). I'm waiting to see the 1.6 diesel which is a brave move on GM's part thank in no part to VW ruining it for everyone.
Needs the 1.6L 200hp/280Nm engine found in the GM Holden Astra.
They should make a SS 2 door model with dual exhaust.
This car ultimately comes off as ok, but a near miss vs. competitors.
mfmf100 A near miss...is a hit!
Seriously....You can't turn off the auto start/stop?
I thought the Cruze has a manual, I drive a 2015 RS with a manual, lol...🤨
I wouldn't say the Cavalier was unloved, maybe horribly unreliable at times but however it sold like hotcakes. You still see SO many Cavaliers putting around. (some without mufflers) LOL
Everyone and there mother knows someone that has driven a Cavalier at one time.
can somebody in the comment section please tell me what is adaptive cruise control and what are the functions of it ?
It adjusts speed to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you.
remember this is a gm
Right it's the kind of car if you're wife is messy you will never drive it and trade it in when warranty is gone.
En el próximo año al sedan Cruze le pondrán techo corredizo como el 5 puertas
From the sounds of this review, Chevy will not have any problems selling these. It's a nice Corolla.
Lol..We corolla owners don't approve of this comment ..
Nice car but hate to hear that they have so many problems with the motor
