- After years of wishing Chevy has finally given Cruze fans what they were asking for: the 2017 Cruze hatchback. The all-new model is a little more compact that the Cruse sedan for easier city parking but swallows considerably more cargo. GM's newest hatch has another trick up its sleeve: a soon to be available 1.6L turbo diesel that should make the Cruze the most efficient non-hybrid hatch in America. While we wait to get out hands on that, check out our detailed take on the turbocharged gasoline model.

There's a reason that I subscribe to this channel: unbiased and very thorough reviews... (y)
Gregory Cooper he's biased with Mazda
Very detailed & thorough analysis of the features of the Cruise Hatchback with numbers & specs. & a very nice comparison of other offerings in the segment. I will look forward to Alex's other Reviews & road tests. Thank you!
Once again, great review AoA! Your reviews are always very thorough, detailed, and informative.
The Cruze seems like a pretty solid entry in its class! I would have liked to have seen LED (or even HID) headlights upfront, but you cannot ask for everything.
I really enjoy how you compare the vehicles you review to its competitors! It makes it very easy to compare vehicles that people may be cross shopping.
From on car reviewer to another, keep up the great work, Alex. I cannot wait for the diesel engine to come to the U.S.
DriveAndBeDriven I watch your videos
I ordered LED for the front headlights and easy to install and looks awesome!
This car wack. Just get a Camry or Accord.
As usual a very excellent review Alex!!
Thank you sir. Beautiful job . Very helpful.
this one came out better then i expected
Love your reviews Alex. one suggestion is to show how the cargo space looks when seats are folded down, especially on hatchbacks and wagons.
This was my thought as well. They can fold down on the cruze right?
@@nolanburchett7972 yes they can, but it would be nice to see how flat the cargo area is with them folded
Excellente Alex Great Review.
the "compact hatchback pack" Good one Alex -

Beautiful. Thanks!
I test drove the Cruze hatchback and I noticed that it gave off a lot of heat from the engine bay, even after the engine was switched off. Is this normal? Does the 1.4T have trouble with heat in the summer?
I find it greatly resembles the Kia Forte5....
Please review the refreshed mazda 3 gt hatchback!?
How does the cruise diesel compare to the Hyundai ioniq? Range seem similar so I'm curious about materials and driving dynamics.
I think GM products with autostop, the AC has an eco mode that should mostly keep the air conditioning on when autostop is engaged.
Is there a reason why you haven't been comparing any vehicles against the Mazda 3 in your recent videos?
Love your reviews, the most honest none bias I've seen.
Can you review the Subaru Impreza Sport Manual?
What used car for a big tall guy do you recommend in 2020?
Found a New 2018 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback with 1.6TD automatic 9spd. True North option package leather seating. $26.500. Been discounted by $6,500 or so. Seen a couple 2019 Chev Equinox 1.6 td new and used as well as the Jimmy Terrain 18’ turbo diesel between $26000 used and 39,950 New 2019. Would rather get used as the depreciation on new domestic vehicles is a kick to the teeth.
You forgot to mention the sun and sound package also has a 8 speaker bose audio system with a subwoofer next to the spare tire.
Had the sedan version for rental few weeks ago, it is a good car overall; however, the built quality on the car I had was just appalling. The car only had 2000 miles ish, and the headlining material around the sunroof was already peeling off. The plastic trim that sits above the driver side a pillar and windshield came loose. Lastly, few pieces of the interior trim had very obvious inconsistent gaps.
Oh, and the start stop was horrid, not sure if it was the Cruze or start stop system in general.
Strange, because my 2017 has already 32K miles and nothing falling apart yet. The only complaint is the ceiling material that is very cheap, but it's sitting solid. But most economy car have the same type of materials. It's the same shit in a Hyundai , Kia or a Corolla.
People considering the Cruze should also consider the Chevy Volt. Same basic platform, similar price after federal and state incentives, plus advantages of being a plug-in hybrid with 53 miles of EV range.
I just went through the Chevy website and configured a Cruze and a Volt to make them equal.
Cruze Premier A/T $29,465 without incentives or discounts.
Volt Premier $41,825 without incentives or discounts.
Where I live in California I can get a $1500 Clean Vehicle Rebate on the Volt *and* a $2,000 rebate from my Air Pollution Control District. That drops the Volt to $38,325. $9,000 more than the Cruze.
Using my local Chevy Dealer's website; I can get $1500 Consumer Cash and $1000 Dealer discount on the Cruze described above bringing it to a purchase price of $26,965.
My dealer will give me a $3500 discount on the Volt Premier with $1000 customer cash; bringing the Volt down to $33,825. $7,000 more than the Cruze.
Looking at my last several years Tax returns, I would only get about $2,000 of the Federal Tax Rebate (remember, you only get at most how much you owe- there is no additional credit- no money back). So that still leaves the Volt costing $5,000 more than the Cruze. And remember that you pay sales tax on the pre-discounted prices. So the Sales tax would be calculated with the Dealer Discount, but not the Chevy rebates so, for me $3100 tax on the Volt, $2300 tax on the Cruze. The California + Air District rebates are after-the-fact as well. That leaves a closer to real purchase price of $29,265 for the Cruze and $36,925 for the Volt- $7,660 higher.
I won't attempt to come up with voodoo to calculate how many miles of EV driving are required in the Volt to offset the $7,660 in price because then I'd need to come up with cost of maintenance and insurance which is difficult. Maintenance on the Volt, if you get a good one, seems to be pretty low. The Cruze would still need regular oil changes and likely brakes far sooner than the Volt. You'd also have to factor in the cost of a level 2 charger for the Volt since it takes nearly 14 hours to charge them on a 110v plug.
Interior space wise, the Cruze is less 'cramped' inside in comparison to the Volt. They are both small; but because of the battery taking up so much real estate; the Volt has less cabin space especially in the rear seats.
All that being said, I would consider a USED Volt instead of a USED Cruze when they become available.
Yes, you might need to be eligible for the entire federal tax credit in order for it to make sense. There are things you can do to temporarily boost your income. For example, if you have an old 401k or traditional IRA, you can convert it to a Roth IRA.
Beyond that, quite steep discounts off MSRP are available on the Volt, perhaps more than the Cruze. I can tell you about how it worked out for me. The MSRP on my Volt LT with several options was around $35.8k. A $1.5k manufacturer rebate and further dealer discounts brought it down to $29k, including delivery charge. My state charges no sales tax on EVs, so that brings it down $3k (or increases Cruze by $2k), and then subtract $7.5k for the federal tax credit, resulting in an effective price of a little under $20k.
Wonder if the stop-start system is seamless and smooth.
U can shut it
Off
Are you going to be reviewing the Subaru Impreza?
I like it...
Do you have any plans to review Tesla Models?? Particularly with the new Model 3 expected to be released in late July??
There have been constant improvements made to the Model S since it's inception and the Model X, a disaster at first release has been cleaning up it's long list of fit and finish defects so a June or July 2017 model might be interesting to review.
Alex, I wish you would include an explanation of how the "Auto stop/start" is implemented, and if it is manually defeatable.
blitzbbffl this along with if traction and stability control can be fully defeated.
They can
Surprised you didn't mention the Ioniq hybrid. At these prices you are right in the ballpark. The issue with the diesel is the higher fuel cost in the US. That really mutes any savings in mpg.
I agree, would have liked to have seen the Ioniq compared.
I agree that hybrid hatchbacks like the Ioniq and Prius should be included in comparisons with conventional hatchbacks. The Prius One trim is only $680 more than the automatic Cruze hatch and comes with advanced safety features, LED headlights, radar cruise, much better efficiency and much better long-term reliability.
Alex, you need to include Korean's and Mazda 3 in the comparative part of the review
Sadly there isnt enough time for every comparison.
I’ve never seen a cruise like that
What about the Impreza?
what about a Bolt review??
That's the real elephant in the room. Why hasn't Alex reviewed the Chevy Bolt?
mans really rated the contort in the trunk
Other than poorer 0-60 time, didn't see much comparison to the Subaru Impreza hatchback. Would probably do worse on fuel economy (due to AWD) and fun factor (due to CVT). Are there areas where you think the Impreza compares well or favorably?
It's because the Subaru is designed to be a manual transmission if you're looking for fun factor
Nice looking vehicle too bad about all the engine problems.
I'm a late commenter but if anyone is reading this there is a way to stop the start/stop thing watch the video how to turn off the auto start/stop on Chevrolet Cruze
You provided a very complete review. Two questions- how reliable do you think that GM' s new 9 speedwill be? Hopefully not as screwed up as F/C's 9 speed. This question was asked - but how reliableis that stop/start feature? I really not all that crazy about it-can it be turned off ?
The Cruze is a rebadged Holden, and Holden is quite good with reliability.
People like to bag on the stop/start feature, but they're typically pretty faultless.
The Cruze isnt a rebadged Holden, its a world car. When you buy it in the US or Canada, Its builded in Ohio. As for reliability, im on my 3rd Cruze now and i had/have no problems at all.
Lol Holden isn't reliable at all. It's the GM of Australia and the factory is shutting down any day now. They cannot keep up with the Japanese and Korean competition.
V Poje world car as in a rebadged Opel/Vauxhall Astra
V Poje how long do you keep your cruze cars each time?
Why don't you compare it to the mazda3?
Tech Defender was wondering the same.
There just wasn't enough time, if we compare every car the videos would be an hour long.
Alex, Would it be possible to create a Pros & Cons slide for the vehicles not in a video and post on your website for reference?
Alex on Autos but the mazda3 is one of the best hatches out. No one thinks of the focus when someone mentions hatchback. Also focus is unreliable. Whenever you review hatchbacks you should have the benchmark hatchbacks which are mazda3 and civic
They really messed up by not offering a higher horsepower version.
And why are you calling it a "corporate front end"?
Have you not looked at a Mazda? Every single one of them are exactly the same on the front end.
Edit: I have the turbo gas hatchback model, 83k miles on the odometer and averages 36.5mpg and gets 42mpg on the highway.
I am not sure if I misunderstand your statement regarding the stop/start. Did you imply that, if I keep the AC on, then stop/start won't kick in? What if I turn on the fan, but not the AC?
When GM first announced this generation of Cruze, I thought it would be my next car. But once I learn there is no way to disable stop/start, it disappeared from my shopping list.
If the AC is on and it is hot outside, the car is less likely to to turn off the engine, however its still not possible to disable the system.
Hi. I have the Cruze Sedan and the A/C doesn't shut off completely, but instead goes into a.. Low power? Mode.
6:13 this car has to be the only new car that doesn't have adjustable seat belt height... don't think I have ever seen one anyways
Cruze offers BSM and RCTA.
The golf doesn't require premium fuel.
Meskir A I agree. 87 is listed in the manual and gas cap. I have one and it's been running perfectly fine. Most of VW's newer vehicles, including the GTI only require 87.
Alex I hate that throughout the video you mention the Mazda 3 hatch as competition but then at the end give it no comparison. Why?
The Honda Civic has oil dilution problems.
Chevrolet left europe multiple years ago, the only models sold there are the Camaro and the Corvette, no Cruze.
Yes, but the Cruze hatchback is the Opel Astra in Europe. Same platform but different styling
I went to England in September of 2014, and I saw some Cruze's. Not a ton of them certainly, but they weren't a rare sighting either. Go to Autotrader UK and look up the Cruze if you don't believe me. So yes, they do sell Cruzes in Europe. Probably the rest of Europe as well, since the Cruze was developed from a Suzuki that was being sold in the European market.
And no, the one's I saw in England weren't Opel Astra's. They were Chevy Cruze's.
What happened to the Hyundai Elantra Sport you reviewed a couple of months ago? You raved about it and said it came in 2nd place only to the Honda Civic Sport Hatch? Confusing why the Chevy Cruze made your "top picks" over the much less expensive Hyundai? You didn't even mention the Hyundai Sport once during your entire video! Or the Hyundai Ionic that you raved about as well!
Where's the hand brake?
Electronic parking brake; probably the button with the "P" on it below the shifter.
He says that button is to turn the parking sensors on and off. He never mentions the E-brake. My bet would be that it's a peddle on the floor.
Pourquoi plus en europe
Cruze surely looks better than the Honda! Chevy's Mylink is quite good as well.
The best compact is Kia Forte/Hyundai Elantra!
I wish the front seats weren't so damn uncomfortable! I have a 2012 Cruze that kills my back, so I always let my wife drive it since it doesn't bother her!
Chevrolet change logo color to silver please. Cars will look 50% better.
Get a chevy Silverado or colarodo with 100 year package
trunk COMFORT!!! WTF!!! were you gonna put someone back there????
Reminds me of the Aveo and I don't like it.
I'm early! (:
Over 21k for a tiny car with a 1.3-liter engine, want a larger engine. no problem its only 28k. lol
The Honda civic is ugly with all the black plastic.
Why you gonna buy this? 😂😂😂 just buy a 98 Civic hatchback.
no i am not feeling the the 1.4L turbo...thing will be no powerhouse on the highway and it will be noisy. Fail with these small engines
Melvin Ray Spence III no, just no. None of what you say is true.
I find myself going like 50 sometimes in a 40 without knowing or hearing a thing..
Drove the sedan as a rental. Relatively quiet. When you floor it, very muted
This car still looks cheap, especially the rear styling. It just looks so outdated
Michael Zhu the cheap hard plastic upper arm rest is unforgivable to me.
I couldn't disagree more. Nothing says cheap like those fake vents on the front and rear of the new hideous Civic Hatchback. The Cruze hatchback, looks upscale and European.
Right up until the pistons require replacing (at under 30k)...and the BCM craps out, causing multitudes of electrical issues. Major piece of junk and extremely sorry I bought it. The previous gen Cruze was a much higher quality vehicle.
What engine was this on?
too much money for a product that is average to the competition. Needs a better engine option other than the diesel. Also upset GM didn't just give irs across all Crude models like the Civic, Mazda3, Focus, Corolla, Golf, ect. The hard plastic upper arm rest is unforgivable in a new auto offering.
Don't ever buy GM. Various mechanical pieces are likely to break when you hit around 40000 miles. And that is the point beyond the bumper to bumper warranty. Terrible resale value. Research on the interenet. Also if you are in the market for a new car, don't watch reviews like these on youtube. They just review what can be seen with the eyes like the quality of the plastic in the interior. Most of the things in a car that matter in a car like mechanical reliability and trustworthiness of a brand cannot be seen with eyes and are not touched on by these poor youtube reviewers. Go to sites like consumeraffairs or car complaints to assess the long term reliability of a car. Watch youtube reviews only to pass the time. Don't make a decision based on these. You're going to regret it.
What about the Impreza?
Very true
