- Think of the Maxima as the up-scale Altima that you've been looking for. It's smaller than the big boys like the Taurus or Impala but has more style and more luxury features than the average Camcord as well.

Alex, you are without a doubt the best car reviewer on RUclips. It's incredibly evident that you have the knowledge and care that not everyone in your industry does. Your videos consistently provide detailed and unbiased information, and your ability to quickly and sensibly compare vehicles to others in their class is invaluable.
Great work, thank you for the review.
Fred Crews suck up.
Just upgraded from my 2014 Maxima w/Sport package to a 17 SR. Omg I love it even more than my 14. It's lighter, smoother, and more technological advanced. I'm also the odd ball that likes my cvt
That's mg dilemma right now. I love my 14 Maxima w/sport package, the handling is unmatched! But I want the newer Max mainly for the newer technology. How do you like the handling of the 8th gen max?
@@mr.clarke4113 54k miles later and still loving it. I'm keeping this car for many more years to come.
This will be my first vehicle to afford Alex.
I drive a 17’ Maxima Platinum and it’s awesome. Lmao at the people bashing on CVT’s. The car drives so smooth.
People trashing on the old CVT's when the entire overhaul came in 2013. Uneducated car buyers is all it is.
Half of the CVT can’t even afford a MAXIMA I drive a 2019 Altima SR and I don’t even notice a CVT I love it
Does this car have blutooth lag while playing videos on phone? Also, does the moon roof switch light up at night on the over head console?
Same with me. 2015 Altima and no CVT issues. I had the fluid flushed and changed and it has been great. I get sick of hearing the bitching about them
I need to drive a car with a CVT to see what the negativity is about. Most of the cars I've driven have regular automatics.
I have a 17 maxima SL fully loaded and honestly the engine and the CVT are so smooth. I honestly prefer when the CVT doesn't simulate gear shifts.
As an owner of a 2016 Maxima SR, I can tell you it doesn't have any competition in it price segment. It surpasses all of the ones you mentioned. It is one very fast large car, and fun to drive.
Stevespecs I agree I love mine, and I came from an Avalon. You really gotta drive it to see how amazing it is. Love the cvt also blowing by ppl in such low gear
To me this car is a sports car. And this is coming from a Corvette fanatic (anything prior to the C8) and my first car I learned to drive in was a 2005 Infiniti G35 sedan. But the maxima handles really well. I’ve hit some gnarly turns and the car just doesn’t exhibit body roll or ever feel sloppy or over worked. The car punched hard for “just 300” horsepower. The 3560 curb weight definitely helps. To me the car is a baby GTR that doesn’t get the big brothers tires, twin turbo setup, transmission, and brakes and tires setup. Lastly you don’t get most of the power going to the rear wheel via all wheel drive. But the maxima definitely gives y out a sporty handling car that isn’t harsh over the road. It’s a if you know you know type car that sadly keeps getting overlooked for much more mundane vehicles. But as a lover of Infiniti and Nissan. This car does me proud. 2017 SV model is what I drive now. And I’ve beaten some sports sedans like chargers RT and the like on some track roads. Lol 😆 😂
Enjoyed this detailed review, you officially sold me on this vehicle.
Alex is the best car reviewer indeed
WRONG! I used to work for Nissan it is NOT FAKE ENGINE NOISE! We worked with bose to make a direct microphone piped into the cabin. So the sound you hear is form YOUR ENGINE. but there was too much sound dampening to hear it nicely so we had to pipe it in.
+Monkey D. Luffy So is the BMW M4, yet the first thing I did to mine was unplug the fake sound.
i believe the M4 is not piped through and is just a recording of the engine in ideal situations/weather
+Monkey D. Luffy Correct, for the M4, it's essentially an audio file being played over the speakers in ideal conditions. I thought that's what the Maxima was doing also.
That's what fake engine noise is.
They're "as useful as paddle shifters on a French Poodle." LOL! That line from an earlier Nissan video is my favorite line you've ever uttered on any of your videos and I'm so glad you reused it!
This was excellent, the best and most thorough car review I’ve ever seen. Very nice work!!
In the market for a 1-2 year old is350, or same year of q50. Now the maxima platinum is sneaking its way on the list. Hard to ignore the value of what you get for the price. Especially on one a couple years old. As a long term Altima 3.5 owner I’m not a cvt hater like so many, my Altima has been one of the lowest cost of ownership vehicles I’ve ever owned. Over 5 years and nothing but brakes, tires, battery, and a couple o2 sensors after putting on 90,000 city kms on it. Had 100k on it when I bought it.
I traded my 2011 sv in yesterday for a 2018 s model and it aint loaded out but still has many cool features and I love the car so far
but, alex, how can i pretend to be in a GT-R without the paddles!?!?!
16:06 "Just about as useful as shift paddles on a French poodle" :)
You are the Best Car reviewer on RUclips!!
Drove one and have to say that those disliking the CVT often come from CVTs on underpowered 4 bangers (including many of Nissans' own entries) . This V6 produces tons of silky power that you don't get the same effect just driving around normally.
I just drove one for about 900 miles. I had no idea this was a cvt transmission unit. The acceleration was great. I used the manual shifting on mountain roads. It was heat. Foot note I normally drive a Honda civic with a cvt.
Cvt are good for everyday driving ppl just jump on the bandwagon with negativity on cvt
Good review & great Nissan.
Still a good daily car for me to buy one Alex.
I think shift paddles on a French poodle are extremely useful.
You do a really great job Alex on all your reviews. I appreciate the content and Information
This is the best powerful engine and the x tronic cvt is fast and smooth..i hate automatic that hunting gears all the time..i was a fun of automaitic trans before but this x tronic cvt maxima is superb..Great job Nissan..
Dude GReat review this was exactly what i needed I was comparing to each car you mentioned. Great Job.
Maxima for life
The problem I have with the Maxima is its pricing & size relative to Infiniti. The Q50 which comes pretty well equipped comes in only a couple thousand more than the Maxima, yet it has more power, RWD and a 7spd gearbox. The Maxima has more features for the $, but I take a more responsive & high grade chassis over electronic toys anyday.
Patrick Wheaton
The 'old' Q50 with the 3.7 V6 already has a ~30hp power advantage & has RWD which means traction is a non-issue. There's a reason why not many FWD cars pushing ~300hp exist; torque steer & steering feel. RWD will ALWAYS launch better than FWD especially when dealing with that much power. I haven't driven this iteration of the Maxima but I did other FWD V6 midsize sedans. Either your car tested is defective or you haven't driven too many premium RWD cars like the C300, 328i, IS350, ATS and Q50. The feeling is VERY different.
What you feel is weight; Q50 is heavier than Maxima, but go into corner at ~40mph and Infiniti grips, the Nissan squeals tires. That's difference between FWD mainstream sedan vs. premium RWD sport sedan.
If you want to save fuel $, get the Q50 Hybrid; 360hp with Civic-level fuel consumption. The Maxima isn't exactly what I call good on gas either.
However the Q50 gets a mid-cycle refresh and the new 3.0 V6 twin turbo with 400hp kills everything except much more expensive BMW M3 and C63 AMG. Even the 'mild' 300hp version now has significantly more torque & thanks to turbocharging now beats the Maxima 3.5 V6 in fuel economy. The difference in price remains small. Why would you go for Maxima unless you are loyal to Nissan? (or maybe get awesome lease deal because nobody buys them?)
Oddly enough however, I would actually now start to rate this HIGHER than things like the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Outrageously the Germans actually charge about the same for their compact FWD entry-luxury vehicles but I find the Maxima to be better built than either car interior-wise & completely wastes them with the standard 3.5 V6. It isn't until you get to the ~$50k+ Audi S3 & Mercedes CLA45 AMG that they truly shine, but at that point it be smarter, again, to pick the Q50S Red Sport.
If anyone wants to consider those small German car but dislike their compact size and do not particularly care much about the badge, I would actually recommend looking at this car.
Patrick Wheaton
Fair enough. For a city commuter that still has some 'go', I think the Maxima is quite good. It just isn't a "sport sedan" that Nissan keeps desperately claims it is.
can you please in your future video include the trim level of thw car in the title it would be very helpful thank you
Best review I had seen so far. I'm subscribing 4sure. You should do the Nissan Altima 2019 vs Honda Accord 2019 . Well done Alex , well explained..
I'll take the Maxima over pretty much any SUV or crossover any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Nice review Alex. The Maxima is a sweet car. For me, there isn't a better new car for 40k!
Just because it has a CVT doesn't mean Paddle Shifters are pointless. Sure it defeats the main advantage of a CVT (Keeping the car in its optimum power band) but allows you to engine-break and "down-shift" for more acceleration. I found it rather fun in the 2015 Subaru WRX.
"Altima to the Max." Lol! Nice. You what is also nice? Filming in 1080p. Thank you Alex. Good review as always.
I would like to thank you in what you are doing 'reviewing cars.' It makes it easy for us as customers to find out what we really want.
But I really hope that you make a review about the 2016 Toyota Avalon. I heard it has a different suspension compare to the 2015 model!
This is almost a good looking car. Maybe in another 20 years Nissan will get there.
Awesome review!! I feel this covers all the pros and cons of the car in the best possible way which u normally don't find in other reviews..Surely going to buy this car next month even though its a CVT. Totally agree that even I am ready to trade this CVT for good fuel economy and much better acceleration
Yes, I did buy the car..I already finished one year now and can say that I very happy. Things that I am pleased are compliments that I used to get from people earlier (Now you have too many new Maxima on road) excellent acceleration, Smart Car application (available in Dubai) handling & interior. Things I don't like is the headroom limitation in rear middle seat, awkward hand brake (actually its on left foot) Blind spot & Seat memory that are not available on my SV trim which should have been given in a 124K priced car!! I kind of regret not buying the SR trim which is the top trim here in UAE
Love your reviews. In future reviews, it would be great if you could comment on audio system quality.
Hi Alex.
Is the engine sound completely synthetic ie. Soundtrack, or is it actual engine noise that's being amplified into the cabin?
Thanks.
Nissan has issued a recall for nearly 5,500 Nissan Maxima sedans from the 2016 model year. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some of those vehicles may suffer from a manufacturing flaw that could result in a fuel leak.
I believe most ppl complain about CVT never ever drove CTV, just follow the trend as some "pro" said, lame...
Awesome review! Will you be making a video about the 2016 Explorer?
Do the 2016 GLC 300 SUV !
The side view's door to window ratio is wild. The belt-line and greenhouse of these new cars makes me never want to sell my '87 535is
Im getting this car CVT or not. If i wanted a real sports car i would get one.
Cold sores have a better reputation than CVT's
Damn, this guy is thorough...
Greatest review as usual.
Didn't hear you mention the Kia Cadenza? I remember you giving it glowing reviews but I don't recall if you prefered it or the Impala. . .
Alex, where is your exclusive trunck index? :(
This cvt is the best..i would pick this cvt compare to automatic..because simply smooth and always on the powerband..Xtronic cvt is simply the best..fast and sporty..
You're being sarcastic right?
No..i love the x tronic cvt because always the right gear if you need it..its fun to drive..i beat 4times in straightline race the 2017 v6 challenger and 2 times Charger v6 theye all 8speed automatic..all rear wheel drive but my 2017 maxima x tronic cvt smoked both of them in straightline..
were there any severe vibration issue when braking hard?
Alex, in the s model for the maxima, is it a manual adjusting, or a 6 way, or a 8 way?
Alex, thank you for your very detailed reviews. I live on a mountain in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Will the CVT allow me to gear down when descending some of the very steep grades
on my way down to the valley floor? Mountain driving on a daily basis can take quite a toll on brakes ( I am sure you are well aware of this as you also live at elevation). Looking forward to your reply.
I was wondering if you could give your personal opinion in comparing the 2016 Maxima and the 2016 Altima with V6 in terms of how they drive/handle? The maxima definitely LOOKS better but I'm not actually sure if it DRIVES better. Thanks!
Patrick Wheaton
Thanks for that. I've only been able to rent the base maxima and the v6 altima isn't available for rent since most rental companies only keep the stock trim
I love maxima
While Im not a fan of the CVT...I do understand why Nissan keeps using it in their cars. They want to give the majority of their consumers everything they want in a family car. Style, comfort, and great fuel economy.
And although many ppl find this to be the biggest reason why its not the ideal sports car you can not deny their consistency. Tbh, most ppl who have an issue with this car are Car Enthusiast/Guru's lol. Remember folks like almost everything else in this country, you have other options😂
Can you do review on 2016 Genesis 3.8 RWD? I'm planning to buy one of these cars, but I still hesitate between the price $40K Maxima Platinum and $50K Genesis 3.8.
YES! Alex did a comprehensive review on the new Maxima SR. Great insight and my thoughts were pretty much similar. The CVT is not as bad as others like to make it and the styling is unique enough to be eye-catching, but not offensive. The interior quality is on-point with other cars & Alex picked up on the details brilliantly.
Great review and thank you. BTW, the Blue Pearl color is one of the hardest color choices to find on dealer lots...had to get a brilliant silver one (for now).
Can you try to get the Titan
Enjoyed the review ! I'm not sure on this vehicle ,looks okay and nice features but overall subjective !
Thanks
Joe
Very nice model
Paddle Shifters. That's a new feature (regarding vehicles in general) on me.
Think of them as a way to treat an automatic transmission as if it were a stickshift. Instead of engaging the clutch and shifting gears, you just hit the paddle.
Spectre2300 I see. I can handle that. Clutching and shifting gears all the time I don't think I could get used to. I might, but then again I might not.
Full size, mid size, which size is best size?
I'm curious, why would you disable the traction control system on FWD cars as part of your testing methodology? This doesn't reflect what the typical consumer will experience, so I'm interested to hear the reason for this test.
+MiniCactuar I disagree. Nissan included the feature and I'm sure some of their consumers will on occasion turn off traction control. Regular people buy this car, not track savvy racers.
+WuWei Xu Well that was sort of my point; do regular customers test acceleration before purchasing a vehicle with TC on or off? I bet 99% of typical consumers leave it on.
+MiniCactuar TC masks everything you want to know about how the front wheels and suspension really behave. So, you need to switch off TC to get a good picture. Of course in normal use, it is on.
I really am not following when you bring up beat fuel economy in class:
1. They di d not include an eco mode
2. In bumper to bumper traffic you finish the trip with 30 L/100 which is as horrible as it gets.
So...? How does this qualify as best for its segment?
didnt you upload a nissan maxima before ?? im confused
Yes to great reviews!
No to piped engine noises!
Yes to poodle paddles!
No to manga inspired design!
Last week, I saw a 2017 Maxima in a parking lot. And I wanted to hump it! I love the design. I decided right then and there that I was gonna get one. Sorta. The only hang up is that it requires premium gas (yeah, I know, "premium gas is a scam". But, all my research tells me that the Maxima does require it).
I'm hoping the test drive is enough to convince me.
Alcantara steering wheels look so bad after a couple years if you're not vigilant with cleaning and treating. Understandable to have in an exotic which are rarely driven, but not on a daily driver.
Can’t wait til they made the Nissan Maxima with 4wheel drive
Well review
I like ur review so much details
"more luxury features than the average Camcord as well." I see what you did there haha!
The Altima has more interior space interesting also enthusiasts says this is bigger than the TLX.
Great review. Thanks
I saw one rolling down the street today... all I can say is that I laughed. The front just kills it. That being said, the interior looks class-competitive.
Hi Alex! Great review as always! I'm torn between 3 vehicles for my next car. One is the Maxima. The other two are the Volvo S60 T5 Drive-E, and the Audi A3 2.0T. What's your take on those three cars?
Ultimately I need a good highway cruiser vehicle. Something that is comfortable on long drives and gets good gas milage.
I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima I bought new in 2010. I now have 140,000 miles on the Maxima with zero issues, same original battery still!
I recently bought an Acura TLX Advanced package of the Maxima. I'm averaged 34 to 38 miles per gallon on the highway in the TLX. I like the look of the Maxima more but with huge discounts on the Acura TLX I couldn't resist! Plus, I still have my 2011 Maxima to cruise around in. One added benefit with Acura is the longer bumper to bumper warranty and Acura loaner cars if you do have a problem. I'd go with the Maxima or a TLX.
Great Review Alex! Thank You! If I were to buy a Nissan sedan right now, it would be a Maxima. I just wish they would offer AWD and one of those 7speed trans from Infiniti.
WHAT!?!?? No exclusive trunk comfort index?!?!
Jacked up the exterior. Definitely trying to hard to be sporty/stylish. Sales dropped over 20% last year because of it. Strangely, the 2015 Toyota Avalon drives like you'd think the Maxima would drive, except it is much more tastefully styled, inside and out. The 2016 Avalon was adjusted to soften the ride.
September 2016 Maxima ranked third in large vehicle sales nationally with 6,569 sales for the month. Avalon was 5th with 3,844 sales. In fact, for the entire year Avalon never beat Maxima in sales for any month. In July 2016 Maxima actually sold the most in the large vehicle category. Avalon was 5th in that month. So I guess Maxima made up that 20% this year, huh? Let's sum up: Avalon drives better than Maxima. Avalon is more tastefully styled inside and out. Yet Avalon can't match Maxima in sales. Seems like the general large car buying public has a different opinion of Maxima vs. Avalon.
Stevie G That's fine, but this would be the first time Maxima has beaten Avalon in sales in a few years. Can it keep that up? The novelty will wear off in the next year or two, and the Avalon will be redesigned in a couple of years, and the world will return to normal.
While I'm not a fan of Nissan, I really can't see myself paying extra foa Maxima over a loaded Altima with the largest engine. I would feel kind of ho-hum either way, so why not save a bunch of money and get the Altima?
Very good review Alex, as always. Looking for a new car and will definitely try the maxima out. Comfortable seats are very important.
Thank you Alex :)
I don't see any reason not to plasti dip that big slab of chrome on the u bar and the logo black.
That's my favorite car
For this car to be a real 4DSC, it MUST have a 6-Speed manual gearbox....
I disagree with your rating on the Acceleration and Braking...Maybe if you used the paddle shifters..you'll improve the acceleration.
Now for braking..if you are a heavy breaker..you'll hate the ABS braking systems in the Nissan.
alex u r best thanks ^^
Why oh Why Did Nissan only put 1 power port in the tiny awkward center console storage? Most vehicle's have one in the dash
storage console too.....so stupid.
2016 Malibu?
Did you forget to talk about crash test ratings? Pretty important subject. Maybe I missed it?
Nissan's version of the Avalon.
"Piping" in exhaust/engine noise into a semi-luxury car is just dumb.
+pedrof830 piping noise into a car is dumb.
the people who came up with this idea in the first place are the exact same kind of people who came up with Harley-Davidson themed restaurants
I Have two maxima
Needs. A. sun. roof !!🌞👍
So... there's active noise cancellation and yet they're piping fake engine noise into the cabin... kill me
Tomasz Dominikowski Smh. These Manufacturers are getting ridiculous.
Nissan/Infinite, and Lexus/Toyota need to fire whoever came up with their recent grille designs, and body styles.
We should start a nationwide campaign, "Say no to CVT's"
+pedrof830 I love CVT, so I would start a campaign Ban Classic Automatics and Manual Shifters from the road. Why? Well, see the vid. Good acceleration and good fuel economy combined is only achieved by CVT. It is called technical progress. But I think there will Always be people who think that cranking up an engine manually or using a manual choke still is "The Real Driving".
+Ronald de Rooij you're a moron
Ronald de Rooij
REAL drivers would never accept your premise, let's see how much you're gonna love your CVT when it fails prematurely and whatever you may have saved on gas, will be wasted on replacement, yes because most times they cannot be repaired.
+pedrof830 idk my family all owns nissans. and my mom's 07 sentra is still going strong with 140k miles. only thing wrong with it is the paint started peeling buts that's pretty much it lol
+pedrof830 I will have to wait and see how long the CVT will hold. I have every confidence (because Japanese). And what a real driver is on public roads is really something different than a real driver on a racetrack.
I like my 03 max better😊
When I see Continuously Variable, I stooped the video.
Sifei Liu oh u "stooped" the video eh lol😂
Good for you
Now f off
