  • The big fight in the compact car segment has been dominated by import brands for decades. The second-generation Chevy Cruze rises toward the top of the heap with style and refinement and unfortunately, sticker price. Tom Voelk reviews the top-tier Premier model.

    I had a Cruze for a week as a rental car, and I loved it. I thought it had a V6 engine, till I popped the hood and saw the 4cyl and a turbo! If your like me you work on your own cars, and you could actually change most parts on this car your self, there is room to work on it. The interior was quiet, and the seats were very adjustable, I'm 6'4 and was able to make the seat and steering wheel fit me for a long road trip. The car is quick, it went to highway speeds instantly, and it averaged 35.6mpg, at highway speed it's instant mpg was around 45mpg! My only complaint would be the automatic stop feature, where it kills the engine at a stop, it's not seamless and not unnoticeable! You hear the A/C blower kick down, I'm ok with that, but when you try to take off from a stop it stumbles, while the engine starts back up, you can pump the brake and keep it from shutting off the engine. You should be able to shut off that auto stop feature, only complaint.

    I have a 2016 Cruze LT with the RS package, and i absolutely love the car, had it for about 6 months, got about just under 6000 miles on it, made two longer trips, and the fuel economy on this car is great, i average roughly between 32-35 in the city, and on the highway driving from Pittsburgh to Hershey PA i averaged 53.6...way better than i expected! Plus the dealership gave me 2 years of onStar, built in 4G wifi, and Sirius XM. overall, great review, and great car! I would 100% go with another Chevy again after this one.

      Did you buy the Diesel? 53.6 on highway?? I get between 50 and 60, unless I go uphill of course, but that's at 80 MPH speeds. I guess I would get over 60 if I was at around 65 MPH.

    The interior ergonomics are excellent on this car, as you mentioned. The nicest interior design of any compact car imo. My wife bought an 2016 LT in July 2016. Already has 20k miles, its a great little car. It gets 42 MPG regularly on the hwy. Smooth and very quiet. I am considering getting one for myself. Auto Stop/Start is very seamless but can be very irritating when you are getting used to it. I am sure lots of people go test drive this car and are put off by the stop/start.

    Drove my new 2017 Cruze sedan premier with a sticker price of 29,900 marked up to 31k with dealer options for 18,900.00 today. There are some amazing end of year rebates with GM employees cost incentive. I don’t love the car but for that price I can live with it.

    • @zarbon700
      @zarbon700 7 лет назад +4

      Protector of the Republic That's funny because actual Cruze owners on many auto forums complain about how badly reliable it is.
      Here's just one site where owners are posting their experience owning a Cruze:
      www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/chevy-cruze.html
      I'll trust the opinion of many real Cruze owners over what 1 video says.

    • @weedmastersr
      @weedmastersr 7 лет назад +3

      zarbon700 You are intentionally being an idiot. It's not what one video says. It's statistics. I don't know if you grasp this concept but the main idea is that you want to hear the opinion of a wide audience, or you risk just hearing a few angry voices. Of course the consumers that have problems will complain online. It's what they do. But Chevy has sold millions of Cruze units. Out of these millions, of course some of them will have troubles, but the vast majority are very reliable, as evidence by people actually making SCIENTIFIC STATISTICAL STUDIES on this matter, not just getting the opinion of some people.

    I really like the looks of the Cruze. Tom is right that GM products are getting better. I would choose this over a Civic just on the looks alone. The new civics are just too "outwardly designed" for me. I would really be curious about the upcoming Cruze diesel though.

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 5 лет назад

      Civics are police magnets. Fuck that shit. You will be looked a lot more seriously in something like an Audi A6, Lincoln MK whatever. Civic?? You bet the cops won't think you're somebody important in there that they might not wanna mess up with.

The Corolla does come with it standard and that's why I will never buy a Corolla and will guide people away from it as much as possible. This car is so stylish and when I get ready to purchase my next new car I would consider this. Another thing is I could go all the way up to the LT without all this extra features I don't need. apa182 yes you are correct to a point. If you come to a stop and put the shifter in manual mode, the engine stays on and all you have to do is slip it back in D again. Also in the colder months, when the heater is on, this disables the start stop function do to coolant flow for heating. It's not a big deal really, plus it's so smooth you don't even notice when it does engage. I do however think that GM should put in an off switch though. It should be a choice. And I believe they will do just that in future models. 👍🏻

As of now, 2017 Corolla is the cheapest car with adaptive cruise control, and that even includes manual transmission cars. Too bad I'm not interested in that. If Corolla iM also came with TSS-P instead of the lesser TSS-C, it would be far more tempting. As is now, I'm getting by with an Impreza with EyeSight + BRZ manual.

      Here is the thing, Dustin: Not all people have your reflexes. Not all people drive responsibly or keep a safe distance. Even though you don't need a computer in your car it still might for instance save you from being rammed from behind at a red light by a distracted person going 50mph if that person has something like automatic emergency braking installed. Safety features are not just there to prevent you and me from causing accidents. They are also there to protect us from other drivers. Unless I'm the only person who doesn't get into a car and knock on all the surfaces. If you want all premium materials, buy a entry level luxury or luxury car.

    Japanese brand myopia is silly. GM is on a roll. Malibu, Camaro to name two others that will delight along with this car. For me Camaro is GM's halo car. Gives Mustang a headache, and Challenger a wake up call to go on a diet. Driving the V6 6 speed manual nicely equipped, this car is more entertaining, and just as fast as my 2010 V8 powered Mustang GT was! Camaro out handles my old Mustang too. Cruze will surprise many. A good thing. But Hyundai Elantra, and Kia, and Mazda, and Honda still delight. Isn't nice to have options.

    it's crazy how much the American car manufacturers have improved. when I was 15 getting my license, 9 years ago, back in 2008 when the Mustang GT's V8 was only making 300hp and v6s were making 200hp and most cars were naturally aspirated. except for the srt4, cobalt ss and a few other pocket rockets. only nice exotic cars had the nice 6 speeds manual or auto. manuals could still beat the automatics epa mpgs.
    now? u have v8s making 400hp+ and turbo 4s and v6s making 300hp+. now even regular cars have 8speed autos and 6 speed manuals. automatics destroy manuals in mpgs ratings. don't get me started on diesels in passenger cars, that was unheard of. now it's becoming more and more common
    Now American cars don't suck. they're actually pretty damn good
    how much the auto industry has changed

      Protector of the Republic A friend bought a loaded 2014 LTZ Cruze RS as he liked my 2011 Sonata GLS GDI. His was built in September 2014 & he bought it on Halloween as apparently GM was holding the release date of the new models late that year for a 30K econobox and a year & a half later with 50K on the clock still owing 26K due 5K negative equity when the new models hit his valuation dropped to 15K, but no one would buy it lost half of what's owed. WTF? That's the kind of loss of value of the SmartCar with much crappier ride quality with great structural integrity, but that's FAST depreciation! Most top imports 10 years old are still worth 50% of initial cost, why the HEAVY cannibalization of value? I rode along for a self test drive of the diesel Cruze with HOT acceleration & MPG, but nobody said if RPO for RS was possible. I'd queried Len Stoler online but they must not be concerned about a JD Power rating NEVER got an answer, just hard sell with repeated requests for information. Attention to detail is the only hope to unseat your rivals! If I wanted a diesel Cruze I'd definitely go preowned! I get the parking lot depreciation, but that's an outrageous loss of value! Sonata class action suit just extended warranty on longblock. No worries here! Korea sure is good at copying the Mitsu for early gens & innovation of GDI and a very TALL 1st gear higher than Reverse provide great off the line power w/o detracting from ownership of my friend.

      ray britton understood, if you can lease, then do it. A very nicely equipped LT with RS Packege will run around $150 to $170 a month. All new vehicles on the market now are expensive. It's crazy.

      In reality, dealers discount Cruze a lot. You can easily find a nicely equipped one in the low 20s.

      I drive off my maps I have to touch the map screen hit the arrow and it updates it. Only problem is I get to to it about 5 minutes. All other parts work just fine, just maps and pandora. So went out and bought 7plus from a 5s thinking maybe the phone was the issue,didn’t do a thing

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  6 лет назад

      Just a thought- When you select Maps in CarPlay, do you see an icon that is a small circle with four arrows within it on the right side of the car's screen? You should. If instead you see arrows on each edge of the screen (top, bottom and both sides) you are in a different mode that locks the screen in place. If this is the case, look for a "cancel" button (or a word something similar) in the upper right corner of the cars display. Select it and it should get you back to the normal mode.

    I bought the 2017 Cruze Premier. I would not buy it again. I have less that 2000 miles on it. The stop/start engine is AWEFUL! It clunks engaging and disengaging and IS NOT SEEMLESS!! When it starts after a stop at a stop sign or after an extended stop at a light, you can feel & HEAR it starting! This is one of the few cars with the stop/start feature that cannot be shut off or bypassed! I have started to put it in neutral when coming to a stop so the engine doesn't shut off . The six speed transmission in stop/go city traffic, it is annoying with its CONSTANT shift changing. When I called GM, they suggested I take it in to be checked. I spoke with one tech who told me that this is how this car is. He said to use the L drive and manually shift if I wanted to better control the shifting. I took it in to another dealership. The tech drove with me and said, yea, that's how this car is. When I filled out a survey for GM, they called. When I explained my complaints, I was basically told, they were sorry I felt the way I did! They also said that the car is "learning" my driving habits and trying to adapt to it. They said it would take until 5000 miles for this to correct itself! The Anti-Collision feature almost caused me to be in accident! It caused engine & gas pedal to disengage when I deliberately crossed road markings! Scared me to death! The person following me had to go around me because the engine was pulling me to a stop! UGH!! Because my $28000 car is now listing for $19000 after 2 months on the market, I am STUCK! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this car unless you buy the standard transmission.

    Couple of things that they could improve on the initial impression:
    1. Get rip of that cheap looking plastic front under spoiler. It looks awkward, and over time, it's gonna fade and reveal the ugliness. Plus, it's determined to get scratched or deformed to drive over any lower pavement.
    2. No more teal interior color. Just make it all bright. How hard is that!?

    • @camaroman101
      @camaroman101 7 лет назад +3

      That cheap looking plastic spoiler is an air dam. Its meant to get scratched and not be too noticeable hence the flat black color. Its there for aerodynamics. Shouldn't fade either considering its blocked from the sun.
