    It was a 45 minute drive to my nearest rental shop when i was a kid in the 90's. That trip back home after I made my choice was great because I got to read the instruction manual cover to cover in anticipation of playing "my" new game when I got home.

    • @Angelarius82
      @Angelarius82 8 лет назад +8

      Here in Ireland people were more into computers back then like the commodore 64, Amiga and Amstrad. Rental shops for NES games were few and far between due to the consoles relative unpopularity. Not really so much where my house was located but the rarity of rental places that did NES/SNES games.

      Oh Man, I did the same with SNES, PS1 and PS2 game manual when I was riding the bus home, it was always a special feeling, this anticipation of the new game and already diving into it for a bit.
      Ever since games don't come with physical manuals anymore, we got robbed so hard of this.... :(

      Kratosx Instruction manuals were awesome reading material when on the toilet.

    • @CrossfacePanda
      @CrossfacePanda 9 лет назад +6

      Kratosx Well, instruction booklets where about more than learning the game.
      The art and story bits where equally, if not more important.
      I look back especially fondly on the SMB3 instructions, as well as the Pokemon R&B one.
      Lots of cool art in those, as well as info on the world and its characters.
      We Love Katamari's instructions where beautiful as well.
      And as a kid, i basically only read them in the car ride home from the video game store. And even then it was just to be able to imagine how cool the game would be once i finally got home.
      Rarely touched them after that initial trip.
      So yes, men (and children) don't need to read instructions. But looking at the art and reading about the lore sure is fun! :)

    • @busybee905
      @busybee905 9 лет назад +5

      CrossfacePanda I respect that they are the types to jump into the game immediately (I have done that with some games myself), but what I don't like is when they complain about certain situations they wouldn't have an issue with if they read the manual. You can't bash the game for your ignorance.

    I use Time in single player modes. In games like Street Fighter II, time gives you more points after each round, going towards your high score on the top 10 ranking. If you turn off the timer, you don't get a time bonus added to your score, resulting in a lower score.

      PrinnyDood That is why I love the Homing mechanic in the all-girls fighting game Arcana Heart, which allows players to zone in on their opponent, eliminating that issue.

    • @sarahIcommented
      @sarahIcommented 9 лет назад +3

      ZigTheHunter Most game mechanics are unnecessary for casual play, but they are still important. You can't very well design a game solely around people mashing random buttons.

    • @ZigTheHunter
      @ZigTheHunter 9 лет назад +2

      sarahIcommented I completely agree, they are important to have, but it maybe shouldn't be the default option. A game need to be designed with both depth and accessibility in mind based off their target audience.

  • @Massacretalitor
    @Massacretalitor 9 лет назад +21

    I admit, on casual play it's pretty bullshit that the winner can't change character. However, in competitive gaming that's the standard to avoid counter-picking (it would be completely awful if winner could change the character also).

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 9 лет назад +3

      Talitor I mean, all you need to do to manually enforce using the same character in a tournament is just make sure the guy just confirms on the same character. There's not much purpose to actively code that restriction into the game so you mess up anyone that isn't being that competitive.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 9 лет назад +1

      Talitor
      I understand the reason for it, but is there any need to force that on anyone not playing in tournaments? It's not like it takes up more time to force the winner to hit A or whatever on the same character, since the loser has to take extra time to change anyway.

  • @PeteSkerritt
    @PeteSkerritt 9 лет назад +47

    Wow. This game looks like fun. Like James, I'm more a fan of the "Street Fighter school" of games that revolve around certain basic stick/D-Pad movement groupings. I can plug myself into those a lot easier than, say, a Mortal Kombat. I'm not at all a fan of Block or Run buttons, either.
    Interesting points about owning a coin-op. Mike's mention of a sit-down Star Wars arcade cabinet is a good one. If you have the room, owning something unique like a sit-down cabinet is pretty cool; the Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator sit-down cabinet is also really nice.
    I also like the fact that James & Mike play on original hardware. Emulation is fine, but it's not the same as playing the original game on the original hardware. That's one of the reasons why I built my Retro Library. Sure, I could play emulated versions of NES, SNES, Genesis, and PlayStation games... but playing the original games provides (for me, anyway) the purest experiences... and calls to mind more personal memories.

    Sticks are great for fighting games just because of how responsive they are. They have a steep learning curve, especially if you are very used to pads, but they are so rewarding once you get used to them. Not to mention, the buttons require fewer physical movements to press, and you can always mod a stick to make up for any physical preferences you may have.
    Anyway, great video. Love the series. XD

    The only fighting game I play seriously is -Smash Broa- Smash Bros, as that's he only one where button mashing doesn't actually get you anywhere unlike Street Fighter or MK where you could beat someone through sheer luck. I still love playing them though, and this one looks neat.

      BlackHairedGoo n You also run and jump in CoD, would you call it a platformer? No, because that would be stupid. In games like CoD, you predominantly shoot things. Thus, it's a shooter. Fuck's sake.

    I love when they play on obscure consoles like the Neo Geo CD. I wish they'd do more Neo Geo cartridge games though.
    Also, as far as the arcade cabinet argument, I'd love to have an Asteroids machine. My college had one that I would spend so much time on. The monitor had this unique look to the graphics, they glowed in a way that you can't get on a computer or flat-screen. That was an awesome game.

  • @ex0duzz

    James is such a noob.. lmao. Look at the way he is just mindlessly mashing all the buttons.. i bet the reason why the game reset was because he pressed some combination of the buttons or just reset due to input overload.. lol
    James isn't even trying to do any moves. If you're gonna mindless mash buttons, you should play tekken/MK or something rather than street fighter type games(not counting the vs games/series.. like xmen vs street fighter) .
    No wonder they prefer MK to SF. All you had to do in MK 1 was jump kick, uppercut, and be able to do 1 special move(like subzero's fireball or scorpions get over here rope etc).

    I actually used to live up the street from a video store that had a Neo Geo 4 slot machine and this was one of the games you could play. I actually really liked this game when I was younger, but I always preferred Samurai Shodown II when that was available. They switched the boards often enough so there were like 8 games in rotation on that cabinet. I played Metal Slug 1 and 2, Double Dragon, Samurai Shodown II, Ninja Combat (ugh...) Sengoku, Burning Fight. That's all I can really remember when it came to that cabinet.
