    While maybe not my favorite of the trilogy, I'll always hold this game near and dear to my heart mainly for the atmosphere + soundtrack + gore. Some levels felt truly grim and brutal and Health (the band) just killed it with the music. Love these games so much.

    I think one of the best things Max Payne 3 did was give you no subtitles if people used Portuguese around Max due to his lack of understanding the language. Really gave you that fish out of water feeling every time it happens.

    I've actually replayed Max Payne 3 more than most other games I own. Yes, the cutscene-loading is a drag but especially on a mouse the shooting in this game feels unlike any other game. It's insanely satisfying.
    One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is the game's New York Minute mode, which puts a time pressure that makes the gameplay as fast and brutal as it should be. Memorizing enemy locations and timing doesn't sound particularly fun, but when running through a level like a god it's worth it.
    All the critiques in this video are totally valid, but that hasn't stopped me from coming back over and over again.

    • @denzelromero4796
      @denzelromero4796 6 лет назад +5

      Jacob Geller Id say the game wasn't meant for New York minute at all , chapter 3 jump in both difficulty and in how much walking you have to do and then the other levels are much easier is incredibly unbalanced

    • @MrRjwagner
      @MrRjwagner 6 лет назад +21

      I do really enjoy New York Minute mode. It really puts your reflexes to the test while ensuring you keep moving. But just... f*ck the police station shootout. Seriously, in my entire playthrough of NYM, that one level was the absolute bane of my existence. Even the final level, the airport, was nowhere near as tedious and difficult as the police station was. I had to restart and try again on that one level alone more times then any other level in the campaign combined.
      I don't know why. But it took me numerous upon numerous attempts before I finally beat that level and gain the plat medal on it. Granted, playing through NYM pretty much made me a master of getting headshots in a rapid succession, but I ain't never playing that mode again on that level.
      Besides that one level, the entire game was fantastic. While the story was no-where near as fantastic or compelling as the combined story of MP 1 and 2, the gameplay easily picks up the slack that was MP 2's gameplay.
      I'm sorry, but I really didn't like the way they handled Max's slo-mo in MP 2. Turning what used to be quick and dirty leaps of faith into a direction and getting those precious headshots was now replaced with a goddamn super-power that the player can abuse to wipe out entire rooms of enemies before they even get a chance to raise their weapons in response.
      Rockstar made the right choice to go back to the way MP 1 handled it. Having the slo-mo ability be more of an extension of, Max's reflexes, not a super-power. But man, when they were developing MP 2, someone sure did love the shit out of the Matrix, I can tell you that much.
      Regardless, MP 3 was fantastic. Yeah, the story might not have been as compelling or as deep as the first two games were, but that's not terrible. It's a shame, yeah, but I enjoyed the gameplay far too much to mind the lack of metaphors or philosophy.

    Really glad to hear James McCaffrey personally requested to play Max again for 3. I genuinely believe that MP3 is his best role. Not standing inside a booth and talking like in 1 and 2, and instead being given full range to act with his body and movements, allowed McCaffrey to fully embody Max in 3, and gave out probably one of the most memorable performances in video games IMO

      @tomknoll5546 5 лет назад +17

      @@Chewberto The game pretends that it's loading, but it's not true. You can tell by simply selecting the individual stages in "challenge mode" or whatever it is called, the one with the countdown where have to progess as fast as possible. Suddenly, the levels load up almost immediately. Also, it just makes no sense that after 6 years, the loading progress of a 2013-game would sometimes take several MINUTES to load linear stages. Just compare it to the loading times on GTA 5 or the likes; it's so much quicker.
      For some reason, they want you to "experience" the story completely every time, ignoring the fact that when playing the game a second time you don't want to watch all of it again.

      The airport shootout with Tears playing in the background will always be one of the most epic atmospheric and nostalgic moments of any game I've ever played. The finally piano playing completing Max's dirge and bringing about a twisted kind of harmony, his acceptance at the end of what he's become and where it's all lead. It was received *extremely poorly* by most fans of the first 2 games, though. Mostly because neither the character, nor the setting or the story felt like "Max Payne'" at all.
      I get that Rockstar wanted to steer the franchise into a new direction - and I generally love new things - but Max Payne isn't a nihilistic, constantly swearing idiot, he is a snarky, sarcastic smart-ass who waxes poetically. And while favelas make for an interesting setting, they never feel like a "main character on their own" like "Noir York City" did in the first 2 games. Add to that Max running around bold, with a full beard and a hawaii shirt and you can see why this game didn't exactly scream "Max Payne" to most fans.

      Gustavo Lima The rendition of São Paulo is probably one of the strongest settings of any game ever, the detail is insaneeee. And I love that you touched on the banter which was always one of my favorite aspects of the game. I don’t speak Portuguese so it just helped drive home Max’s alienation and I thought it was a great kind of counterpoint to the original games - the bad guys still banter with each other but they might as well be speaking Martian as far as Max is concerned, but ultimately Max silences the cacophony no matter what language they’re speaking.

    • @SuperKratosgamer

    • @MiroBass1
      @MiroBass1 6 лет назад +12

      the portuguese doesn't really feel like it's being spoken by a native brazilian, but maybe that's just me. I feel like the game that did this best was STALKER, the NPCs usually spoke in Ukranian to each other, but they did speak English directly to the player.
      Near the guard outpost at the start of the game, the ukranian colonel spoke via a speaker about the dangers of the zone and so on in English, but when you started a firefight with the military, he would start shouting orders in Ukranian, which felt a lot more realistic. Of course, I don't know if the Ukranian he spoke was actually accurate or not, or if it was Russian instead of Ukranian, but it felt immersive at least

    • @SuperKratosgamer
      @SuperKratosgamer 6 лет назад +8

      Exactly, most of the game voice actors are not brazilians, they just speak portuguese, and some are not real voice actors, Serrano is voiced by a nigerian, Becker voice actor is a narrator, so he dont show emotions on the dub.

      That being said, in Max Payne MP the movement didn't feel great. Sometimes strafing forwards or backwards despite flicking the stick to the left or right. Sometimes it felt entirely unresponsive if you chose to dive and (after landing) try to get back up from the floor. I think most of it was down to the multiplayer character model hitboxes though as Max always felt really solid and responsive.

As I am at only 26 now after completing a 5 year enlistment in the Marines, been halfway around the world, shot at, lost close friends all while I'm home left with injuries that will only worsen as I age. I see the story with a lot more maturity and understanding. I find that I relate to Max's losses and failures deeply, and for that I will always be very close to this game. "Control should be prioritized over immersion"
    And a year down the road, Rockstar's latest venture with Red Dead Redemption 2 makes this quote all the more important.
    Having the game stop you for up to 20 seconds at a time to watch the same animations play out over and over again might be immersive, but takes so much control away from the players and just wears you down after a while.
    While there's a great game in RDR2, there's also a lot of tedium that you have to put up with to see its conclusion.

    Regarding movement: I actually enjoy how Max Payne 3 weights his movements and limts the transitions. like how he has to physically have his arms forward with the weapon to be able to shoot forward. And how he actually has to finish his step to the right before going forward and so on. It feels real. I always thought it broke immersion when most games, when you aim, your arms and body INSTANTLY promps you forward where you're pointing at, as if you were The Flash. On Max Payne 3, his body feels connected to the world and follows the laws of how a bone structure should work and how fast you should be moving, it feels incredibly good. To this day, I have not experience this on any other game, other than GTA V, but very slightly. I hope Red Dead Redemption 2 follow this heavy mechanic. The weight of the body and the limits of movement immerse me more than any well-voice cinematic. Most games feels like you're controlling a hollow character made out of feather and everything is floaty and unrealistically fast.

      MagicMaster667 Really not plotholes, through the majority of the game Max is drunk and high off painkillers. He’s not exactly in the right state of mind and he mentions it very often in cutscenes. Yes, I did. He was mislead but he always suspected he was being used. In MP3 however, Max goes full white knight, blaming himself for everything that goes wrong, even when some things were clearly not his fault. And what bothers me more is that he's never aware how ridicolous the whole situation is, how he survives every wave of enemies and never seem to enjoy antything he's doing, unlike the previous games.

      I was surprised by how good the MP was at launch, but it was let down by serious server issues, and tons of hacking and glitching. By the time any of those things started to get addressed (at least on PC), they had already released required DLC so if you wanted to keep up with the player base you had to shell out for more content. And as I recall the hackers never really went away.

    "The multiplayer for this game was a mean spirited meat grinder, just as nasty as the story mode and three times as deadly. Everybody was struggling for a spot at the top, only to get stomped down by who had the best gear and best ping. The animations didn't help, with players being stuck in the middle of standing up while breaking from cover. It was a game of king of the hill but everyone was weighed down with iron bars. And those who stayed on top would never get dislodged from their ivory towers. It was like a microcosm of gangland life made into a video game."
    I feel like the writers forgot the best part of Max Payne's writing; The metaphors.

    Awesome video as always! You know how much I love your editing, organization, and transitions. Your scripts are on top of their game.
    However I say this with much love, your multiplayer explanation section of the video made me feel like you were just reading as fast as possible. I felt like I missed some points if I was not at 110% attentive on your video. I do not think it would hurt to slow down a bit and have the video extend a bit, also with more clips showing your explanation. I know its a lot of info you want to put out there to explain your analysis, but if that is the case then it might be better to cut out less important information.
    But that is just my take on it, and I could possibly be a minority in this opinion.

      Oh yeah for sure, I think I remember asking Ray once in a hangout about the challenges of obtaning information for multiplayer on dead games. I can totally recognize the challenge is real for these video projects on that aspect. I always have much respect when you can your tools to gain as much data as possible like Ray does by using friends to gather his own multiplayer video footage instead of just using other peoples videos online. My only critic honestly was I felt flow was off in the script/video for the multiplayer portion, so if information is too obscure to portray, maybe it might be better to omit some of the more in depth analysis of it since it can be considered irrelevant for the better flow. BUT ! I also recognize that might be a minority opinion of mine lol

      @@linhza501 Mafia 3's gunplay is my absolute favorite cover-shooter (which, granted isn't saying much), but I absolutely loved the core gameplay loop. The thing that killed it was repetition. Mafia 3 - from a mechanical and technical standpoint - is far, far the best in the series. A very underrated game that was bogged down by a disaster-filled release, needless political discourse, and paradoxically an over-emphasis on responding to criticisms of Mafia II.
      In doing so, they made Mafia III too much like all of the other open-world ubisoftapoloozas out there. They took the criticisms of Mafia II to heart and acted on them years after the formula people craved became stale, that's the original sin of the third Mafia game's development. The mirrors didn't help.
      Admittedly, going back recently and playing it again (along with all of the dlc, which works wonders in breaking up that repetitive mission structure) has really improved my perception of the game. I hope other people give it another chance, I think it was released at a bad time - both in that it was too early given the game's state, and in that the community as a whole needed something to shit on relentlessly, and found Mafia III a prime prospect. I think its reputation as a poor game is unearned. It is a fine game - just a fine game. Nothing spectacular, but my favorite ots cover-shooter.
