      @Enjoyurble 10 месяцев назад +2

@@achildnamedhotchick1739 Yeah, that's the thing that kind of gets missed with the review. The big point of Stranglehold was that they were trying to make you feel like you were directing and playing in a John Woo film, so they went out of their way to focus on the set pieces, destruction, and interactions. It's much more of an arcade-style shoot-em-up than anything else. It's far from perfect, but those couple of chapters that are all about the things you can shoot to hurt enemies is fantastic. I do think they could have done much more with the story, added co-op, or a lot of other things, but like the review said a sequel was planned and then canned. What might have been...

I remember Yahtzee saying, in one of his LDOs, that the Devs reached out to him after his 'Wet' review. The publisher gave them the prototype of the game they got from some unknown team and gave them less than a year to finish it. That's why it's in such a bad rushed state.

Absolute shame TO2 never got off the ground, an open-world game set in a Condensed pocket-sized Mexico for the 360/PS3 generation would have been badass. Also worth noting how Stranglehold even launched on the Xbox at all considering how batshit bonkers the visuals and destruction was, the janked FOV and FPS drops feel trivial when it shouldn't have been running at all on such aging hardware. I LOOOVED WET, got it on the day it came out for the PS3, i believe a friend of mine even preordered 2 copies for me and him and just brought it to me on his way from work, we played at my place 12 hours straight, till 4 in the morning, next day we did the same, and went on for 14 days just like that every day. Everytime i look at my shelf and see the game box im sad my ps3 dont work anymore, gonna get me another one, i miss that game, it was one of the few games i really loved and mainly WET has 2 things done really really well, the gunplay loop and the soundtrack, those 2 things really make a unique game even tho its considered a clone, for me WET was easily one of the most fun i had with videogames ever

All 3 games here are super underrated and cool. Max Payne and especially its sequels always were one of my favorite games of all time.
I played Total Overdose when I was around 10-12, as someone from eastern Europe it was my first introduction to Mexican culture and everything around it. Loved it probably more, than San Andreas lol (and SA is awesome). Such a style.
Stranglehold was one of the first games I got for my new PC and I clearly remember one thing - destructability. At its time if felt incredible, but with games like Gears of War 2 and Red Faction Guerilla not very long down the line made me completely forget about it.
Wet is just pure fun. Love Kill Bill and it really sometimes make you feel like reliving scenes from these movies. Was very excited to discover a few years ago it was made by BHVR who also did Dead by Daylight which I played for 1.5k hours lol.

Honestly growing up I loved Max Payne, Strangehold and Total Overdose - the latter’s simplicity was actually something I enjoyed as kid/teen because the action was so consistent. Max Payne 3 was arguably the last saviour of this sub genre of shooters. Tried playing Wet a couple of years ago mom PS Now and I couldn’t get in to it (especially with the awful control lag on ps now) - again the aesthetic and action is cool though!
Strangehold still has the best destruction though, hands down.

John Woo’s Stranglehold is the best Hong Kong action game ever imo. Max Payne is good don’t get me wrong, but that series always felt more like The Matrix with its emphasis on dodging enemy shots. Stranglehold however is just pure stylish destruction, feeling more like The Killer and Hard Boiled. It’s like both games are on two opposite ends of the third person bullet time spectrum.

15:40 there's another reason why he doesn't reload in Stranglehold, that's because his character doesn't reload in Hard Boiled either. You see him load guns before a fire fight, but during fire fights, no matter how many bullets he fires, he never reloads. John Woo said he does this on purpose because 'reloading slows down the action scene' lol =)
Also your issues with the Style of WET (gameplay issues, nailed it) seem to come more from a lack of experience with the conventions they are trying to ape, bad sound due to a terrible sound system in the cinema, adverts that have no connection to the movie you are watching, the overall interruptions in a cinema experience, for example; when I was a boy, my local cinema, no matter the film (U to 18) or it's length, would always have an intermission so they could sell you ice cream and chocolate from a confectionery girl who would walk to the front of the cinema, and these intermission weren't well placed, ever. The thing with WET is all 'style over substance' but you gotta like the style to begin with to gloss over the lack of substance lol.
I enjoy WET for what it is, does that make a good game, no, a game worthy of defending, maybe.

I think the reason games like Wet grab a cult following just by its character design and concept is because there is very rarely any media with a big budget following those inspirations. Be it movie or game.

You just made me want to play Max Payne again. I haven't played it in probably 15 years, but I still remember that incredible comic book presentation style, the noir atmosphere, the grit and the satisfying slowmo headshots. Also Thanks for pointing me towards Wargasm. That's my jam baby!

Love the video mate. Wish you the best with your next one. Also love that you used a bit of Cowboy Bebop music from 26:14-26:30

My most prominent memory with stranglehold was playing it with my brother when we were much younger, and we did the spin attack with the rocket launcher. It must've been some sort of developer oversight, because it was so bizarre and hilarious watching this guy spin around all dramatically and fire this slow firing weapon like a machine gun, and it still somehow mowing down everyone in the room.

I saw the ZP video on Wet back in the day and, loving the style of the concept art, played the demo. I could not for the life of me get into it - I remember feeling like there was something there that I was supposed to "get", but couldn't. I haven't heard a thing about it since. I do wish a developer with good means and a consistent vision could take the artbook and make something great out of it. Great video.

I am fully behind the remasters if it's Remedy at the helm, honest to God one of the most consistently great devs around.

Total Overdose was the bomb back in 2007 for me. Having no PC at home, I had to learn how to bypass the admin lock in the several cyber cafes near home so I could install it from my flash drive. Plenty of times my save got corrupted but had plenty of fun in the meantime. The nostalgia...
