#LOST SOUNDTRACK ANALYSIS (Michael Giacchino's score)
"I want to explain that I know what you're feeling."
While Ben receives a well-earned new theme, his original theme finds a fitting conclusion. Go watch it!
    ⚱️👨‍🏫🪦
So many years after the show's ending, Michael Giacchino's amazing soundtrack for LOST still has many, many secrets to uncover. Not only does every main character have their own theme music, but much like the interconnected writing of the show itself, Giacchino's score connects locations, scenes, emotions and conflicts in unbelievably brilliant ways. In these videos, I will be exploring Michael Giacchino's soundtrack from ABC's LOST in a weekly video, covering all episodes of the show and their musical connections to each other.

Long time viewer, first time commenter. Thank you for this entire project! I had been looking for a podcast that analyzed the incredible music of Lost for years hoping someone would devote the time and skilled observation that I lack and examine the musical themes of Lost - it took me awhile to realize I should check RUclips! I discovered this channel while I was rewatching Lost last year, and I’ve been following each video as I arrive at the episode. It has been great! This is really a tremendous labor of love you have here and I am so grateful for your insights - it has enhanced my already considerable love and appreciation for Lost and Giacchino’s score!
I wanted to comment here, since I don’t think it was mentioned in the video (since as you have noted there is such a sheer volume of new music to examine in Season 6) how much I loved the “Home” theme returning in the final moments as Jack, Hurley and Richard arrive at the beach camp. What a beautiful and subtle inversion on the original usage of this music to depict the Oceanic 6 arriving “home” off the island to now demonstrate they are truly “home” back where it all began so long ago after the crash. It really brings things full circle (and I’m always a sucker for the show’s use of these slow motion musical beach reunions that have recurred since Season 2 and the raftees returning).
Anyways, thank you again for your insightful commentary!

Thank you so much! That's a really great compliment, and I'm very glad you enjoyed these videos so much. Love your comment on the use of the "Home theme" in this episode. It's used to great effect here for the reunion of (part of) the Oceanic Six. I love when a moodier version is heard near the end of "Everybody Loves Hugo", once again when members of the Oceanic Six are reunited.

Ben's arc in the sideways is always so heartwarming.

Man is that really the only time Ben's theme resolves itself? It did seem kinda foreign to actually hear that last chord, so I guess it's not that hard to believe.

It's interesting, because there really are not many moments where Giacchino circles back to the first chord of a theme in this way. From the top of my head, it happens at the end of "Win One For the Reaper", "Departing Sun", "Hurley's Handouts", "...And Found", "Rose and Bernard", "Shambala", "Ji Yeon", "Karma Jin-itiative", "LAX", "Ultrasonic Flash" and a couple of other moments I can't think of right now. In this episode, it happens three times in consecutive scenes! Then it happens another time with Jack's theme at the end of "The Long Kiss Goodbye".

Ben's run motif is one I never really cared about. There's something about it that feels a bit lazy to me :P But the beginning of Dr. Linus (and unfortunately, a lot of the episode) is really problematic to me to begin with. Everyhing from Frank turning his rifle, but it somehow makes a shotgun sound or that it's Sun and not Ben that points them in the right direction to the beach camp in the middle of the night.
I love the connection you draw to "Mapquest". Now, that's really cool!
But even better, that Ben's theme has never closed off until this episode is pretty brilliant. I love the scene with Ben and Ilana at the end of the episode and now you've just made it better! :D

For me, this is one of very few episodes in season six that feels similar in quality to season 1. But then again, I had never noticed those errors you point out in the first scene. 🥲 Glad I was able to improve it just a little! 😜
