@@JMGauthier nah 3 is so incredibly bad that no one who starts there will want to go back, that game is completely unfinished and a slog that doesn't really play like the others. Hell the previous games actually feel significantly less clunky than 3.

Not really, if you play it by chronological order the, a lot of the scenes just wont hit the same because of heavy spoilers. For example, the scene with Aqua at the beach at the end of birth by sleep will definitely hit differently if you played the other games that came before.

It will all be just crazy theories without tangibility of them being relatively close to what Kg 4 actually is.
They made the doomed mistake that kh3 made unfortunately. They just never seem to learn from past mistakes. There has legit been a drought of KH content for over 3 years now and that’s a damn shame considering this already has a niche fanbase. While people suffered through development hell with 3 idk if 4 wil receive the same level of grace considering most people had a mediocre experience with 3

It's important to note that you should only play the games in Chronological order AFTER playing in Release Order.

Recoded is a side story anyways, unless you play the original DS version, you're not missing anything, it only gets referenced once or twice in Dream Drop and KH3

The collection order is the intended order, but they aren't in release order at all. If they were, then 358/2 would be after KH2. ReCoM would also be after KH2. Which would be a terrible way to play.

It also makes more sense because a lot of stuff for kh2 gets spoiled otherwise. CoM was always before kh2 so no idea what you‘re talking about. Go in order is the best way to play. Otherwise you’re going to be wondering how Sora knows a bunch of characters in KH2 if you start there and then jump to KH1. Things will get confusing. So don’t listen to IGN when they say there’s “no order to play them”. There definitely is an order

Started with dream drop distance . Then tried 1 hated Soras voice so skipped and went to 2 and then played them all apart from 1 and still haven’t played 3 . 358/2 days is by far my favourite!

Basically, your options are 1) No order, play whichever game you want, 2) by release date 3) Chronological order. In other words EVERYTHING WE ALREADY KNEW!!!
For the love of all that is holy please play in release order. Everything was donde expecting you to have played the previous games. If you do timeline orde you will be lost as hell if it's your first time playing.

Play birth by sleep first. Then follow release order
Play Kh1, then 2, and maybe birth by sleep. Then that’s all. Don’t waste your time with 3. Franchise became to convoluted and lost its sense of direction. Also the dialogue, gameplay, character design and music lost the old feel. Use to be my favorite game franchise, sad to have seen it go down like this.
The biggest drawback to playing it outside of release order is quite literally the quality of change in gameplay. Imagine playing birth by sleep then 3 then 2 FM and then 1. Please just don’t do it to yourself.
K1 first if you've never played any of it.
After that go in chronological order, easier to understand the story that way

Chronological order is fine, just as long as it’s not how you play the series for the first time. Telling fans to start with any of the games will just make things more confusing since every game builds off the information from the last release.
