  • Here's what you can expect when actually painting models with Speedpaint! In this tutorial, I painted 30 different models quite fast without using much skill. These results are 100% accessible for total beginners, or anyone who wants to paint their models quickly. The minis are for Dungeons and Dragons and Ravaged Star. The DnD minis are mostly from The Lost Dragons, The Lost Adventures, and Titan Forge.
    Check out my previous speedpaint review for more information:

      Or experienced painters. I easily see these becoming my new basecoat paints for most everything. Especially since basecoating is normally slow and sucks. However with these possibly one basecoat with some highs and shadow already built-in, then work from there as needed.

    I know these are supposed to be cheats for painting table-ready quickly and not necessarily beautifully, but i unironically love the way that the makeup brush "zenithal" looks under the speedpaints. It makes me think of those old sketch-y illustrations from old fantasy books. And it brings out highlights and detail in a more interesting way than the classic spray zenithal imo. Keep up the good work with these!

    • @standasebek5033

      Yes. Realistic miniatures with precise details, light and colors are great, but "sketch-y illustrations from old fantasy books" appeals to me even more.

    I just started my journey into this hobby. Bought an Army Painter starter set of regular acryllic paint, a can of black primer, 3 brushes and a black wash. Not even 3 weeks later, and I just got a delivery of a really nice set of high quality brushes, white primer for zenithal priming and different-colored washes as I didn't like how the black wash behaved on all of my minis. My minis look really shitty compared to the ones my friends who have been playing wargames for years now but I don't really care! I am really having fun with the hobby and the mini I just finished looks miles better than the group of goblins my players will encounter in our first DnD session, which was the first batch of minis I painted.
    You and a few other channels like Miniac and Ninjon really helped and continue to help me in taking step by step forward. So, thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Without you, I would not have found one of the most important activities in my current live. It's been a rough couple of years, as my mental health took a nosedive once Covid hit, but going from listening to Critical Role, to planning my own campaign, to buying and painting the NPCs and villains my players are going to encounter helped immensely with that.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  2 года назад +3

      That's awesome! Welcome to the hobby, I'm so glad that you're having fun with it. I bet your players will appreciate it too! I advocate for this hobby because I know how great it can be for mental health and overall wellbeing- one of the better pastimes out there for sure :-)

    I have been experimenting with the speed paints and I love him too. One of the things that I've done to combat the darker look once it dries is to let it dry for a day and then come back and wet brush, basically take a brush you would use to dry brush and just get it slightly damp and then brush it gently over the model to take away some of the speed paint from the top surfaces help restore some of the contrast. Another thing I'm doing is mixing the speedpaints a little bit to get either a darker or lighter color and you can do this after you've applied the paint to the model.

    As a VERY newly minted miniature painter, I have to say - the best results seem to come from laying down a black base coat and then white dry brush before applying the speed paints. I feel like the most consistent color comes from that approach.

  • @belmarduk
    @belmarduk 2 года назад +4

    the results from just slapping it on there are pretty incredible. I think with a second pass of detail highlighting these would look like you spent all day on each one. Good on Army Painter for coming up with an answer to a games workshop product that is actually identifiable on the shelf. They have a lot of paints that seem like they're meant to be alternatives to layer paints or technical paints but there's nothing on the bottle to say "hey, this is transparent, like, really transparent bro" (looking at you jungle green) - it's nice to actually know what you're getting here.

    I was talking to my son the other day and I was painting some minis. I was saying how it takes a long time sometimes and he said that he doesn't care so much about the details as long as they're cool...in other words, they don't see the small details I put in on an NPC that is about to be murdered, talked to, or is background so I shouldn't worry so much about the super fine details. For me, personally, these speed paints will help in accomplishing that goal and getting more time playing.

    Remember, also, that you can always go back over with regular paints, if you need some targeted detail. Those Ravaged Star minis look decent enough with just the speed paint. But if you're the kind of person who must paint the trim, nothing is stopping you from doing so.
    Both Speed Paints and Contrast Paints are tools. They aren't the totality of a painting style, and don't have to be.

    Thank you for making this video, good to see some complete models done (and not just a single colour).

    I’ve received my set and will use them to lessen my huge pile of shame. I love how these models turned out 😉.
    And as you say: not the best paintjob, but a lot better than unpainted 🤪

    Maybe more so than anything else I've seen on the subject, this really helped me see the potential and practical uses for speed paints. Thanks, Brent! Excellent work as always.

    Man, I absolutely love your videos. You have a very ice voice to listen to and would totally watch a video of you and some friends playing a DnD adventure. I've learned so much from your videos and i can't wait to start painting my second (ever) minis with the AP speed paints. :)
    Take care!

    Love this video - this is absolutely what I always advocate for. Painting doesn't have to be hard, and can be super accessible. My go-to used to be contrast paints, but it's increasingly looking like Speedpaints might be the future!

      Yeah! These may have just crossed the line to being something I'd seriously recommend to a brand new painter.
