Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer) can not only beatbox but is a tenor with a large range and perfect pitch. He plays multiple instruments and is a world class cellist who has been praised by Yo Yo Ma. He appeared twice at Carnegie Hall (once on cello and again on saxophone). Kevin graduated pre-med from Yale University and speaks multiple languages, including fluent Mandarin.
Penta = five. They are named after the pentatonix scale, which is a scale that has five notes per octave. They have always been five, but Avi Kaplan amicably left the group in 2017 and Matt joined after Avi helped pick him to take his place. 🙂 They really are amazing with several covers as well as original songs.
Avi wasn't actually involved in the picking process, it's just an internet rumor that has been told too many times in comments so it "became fact"
Avi had absolutely nothing to do with finding or picking Matt. Matt auditioned, along with 40+ others, He won his place in the band based upon his talent, experience, work ethic, personality, etc. Avi was not involved.
Just another thing, it is actually the pentatonic scale. They added the "x" to jazz up the name for the competition. And yes, Avi had nothing to do with Matt as his replacement. But as was said already, so many have kept putting that out there that it has become kind of an urban legend, viewed as truth when in fact it isn't true at all.
@@rfiliagaful yea, i knew that, and actually thought i spelled it correctly, but must've used my muscle memory since i spell the group name more than the scale. I didn't know Avi wasn't actually a part of the process though. thanks for the clarification.

I'm not an overly patriotic American, but a really well done rendition of the national anthem brings me to tears.
The beatboxer sings also, and he was there singing. His name is Kevin. :-)
I have never got chill bumps while listening to the Star Spangled Banner before. Pentatonic just can't help but upgrade any song that they have ever performed. Kevin Olusola is the beat boxer and yes he can sing and does on occasion like in Mary did you know. They have always had only 5 members and is why they go by Pentatonix because a pentagram is a 5 sized object. Avi Kaplan was the original bass singer in the group that had to leave and was replaced by Matt Sallee along with the original 3 high school friend Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi.
Kirsti, Scott, and Mitch are from Texas and they met very young. Kirsti and Mitch were in primary school together - I want to say kindergarten, but I don't remember exactly. Scott and Mitch knew each other from community theater at around 10 years old. It wasn't until they were all in high school that they got together as a trio.

All members of Pentatonix are American: Scott Hoying (Arlington, TX); Mitch Grassi (Arlington, TX); Kirstin Maldonado (Fort Worth, TX); Kevin Olusola (Owensboro, KY); and Matt Sallee (Baltimore, MD). The group has always been comprised of five members; but Matt Sallee replaced Avi Kaplan (left to pursue a solo career) in 2017. **Side-note: The National Anthem was fantastic; the TCU Horned Frogs were not 😜.

Kirstin is from Arlington too. The "trio" all knew each other growing up in the same town, participating in the same choir, musical theater, and school events.

Singing the national anthem at a prestigious event has to be one of the toughest gigs - so many people watching and it’s easy for a version to be vilified. Thankfully, that didn’t happen here. Pentatonix (very American) rose to the occasion and did us proud. Excellent job, and excellent reaction! Pitiful game, though. Thanks. Peace from Ohio …

Kevin also has his own RUclips channel. Everything on it is amazing. I hope that they will check it out and react to some of Kevin's solo work. (Kevin Olusola) "Down" is a fan favorite for reactors to start with for reactions. Performance KOvers of "Sign Of The Times" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" are also fan favorites for reactors new to Kevin's work.

There have always been five members. However, the original bass, Avi, left in 2017 and then Matt came in. So you were probably remembering Avi.

It will blow your mind, and many fans think that track is a main reason they are up for a fourth Grammy. Scott, the tall blonde, sings in Italian on this track, and Mitch, the high counter-tenor, is the lead on this single. Amazing. PTX are American. Scott (tall blonde), Kirstie and Mitch (black hair, high tenor) are all of from Texas. They have known each other since they were 8 and been singing together since high school. Kevin (far right) is the beatboxer but he can sing tenor too.

Love the vid! Scott, Mitch, and Kirsty (Kirsten) are from Arlington, Texas. They grew up together in school. They recruited Kevin (the beatboxer who also sings) and Avi (The super low bass) so they could join the Sing-off, a TV show competition, similar to American Idol, but for A Capella groups. They went on to win the show and then gain a huge fallowing through RUclips. Avi left because their pace and constant touring was a bit too much for him, so Matt joined his place as the new bass of the group.

There are five and Kevin been the beat boxer know who to sing very well, he had song part of song but most does the beat boxer, and also they have song like Ron to you or Mad World that are 5 part harmonies without any beat boxing
Listen to “Amazing Grace(My chains are gone)” you’ll hear the beat boxer sing.
"Penta" is 5 in Latin, and they have always been a group of 5. They are, from the left in this video Kevin Olusola, who is their beatboxer, and also sings a mean tenor. Second is Kirstie Maldonado, who sings alto or soprano as needed. Third is Scott Hoying, who you though was Scandinavian, and might be ancestry-wise, but was born in Arlington, Texas, as were Kirstie and the next in line, Mitch, the tenor of the group. The final singer, who is their bass, is Matt Sallee. He replaced Avi Kaplan as bass in late 2017. That's the only change in the lineup since they first formed PTX in 2011.

Penta means five. The first 6 years was Avi as a base. The last 6 years have been Matt as the base. Kirsten, Scott, Kevin, and Mitch are the same performers as always.

I'm hoping they're invited to sing this at superbowl because they're tremendously hyped right now. I didn't even knkw they sung here until I heard about it on CNN! Space Force is a trump Era creation. It basically is in charge of any space related warfare. Not quite sure what that means or if it's similar to star wars under Reagan that was laughed out of existence at the time. Russia had the first space force type branch in 1992 which has since been absorbed in their military proper I THINK. The only countries now that operates this type of branch is America and China. which is probably why it still exists and wasn't disbanded after trunp left office.

I like the performance, but I always wish the guest singers would just sing it straight. The audiences never sing along anymore because you never know what's going to happen. I miss singing it.
