Hi Nick! This is something productions do often! Where main characters who are no longer needed for the plot, the actors switch to new main characters.
Yes, this! Peggy died young. Lafayette went back to France. Laurens (obviously) died right after the war. And, Mulligan went back to being a tailor after the war.
@@alishagrossman4080 Peggy died later in the story (I don't mention this to be picky but just because not everyone knows Peggy's death is why Eliza is wearing black during a certain reprise later in act 2: Peggy died within the year - don't trust the people saying she was coming back from Peggy's funeral, that's misinformation - and Eliza was still mourning).
Nick, watching Alexander micro-cheating with Angelica via letters: I HATE THIS OMIGOSH I HATE THIS IT'S LIKE WATCHING A TRAIN WRECK I HATE THIS. Nick, watching Alexander macro-cheating with Maria Reynolds: I LOVE THIS I LOVE THIS I LOVE THIS!!!
The double casting of actors in two roles is not only for the sake of their 1st act characters being no longer needed but also does a good job of showing a parallels/contrast between the people around Hamilton during the war and after when he became a politican. If you want to see some really clever writing, I suggest re-listening to the opening where everyone is introducing themselves and suddenly you might see the double meanings in the phrases stated by those who are playing two roles. (Note: I’d recommend waiting until you get to at least It’s Quiet Uptown to check it out again.)
The actress for Mariah Reynolds, Jasmine Cepha Jones, is Peggy from Act 1. Also they didn't cast a 9 year old as Phillip because that scene he raps is the only scene where he's 9.
Jefferson's song is not rock and roll, but specifically boogie-woogie/ragtime, which was chosen for 2 purposes: 1) ragtime is the grandfather of hip hop, so it's paying homage to those roots. And 2) Jefferson was about a decade older than Hamilton and he held more traditional/old fashioned views on things like class, status, and obviously race, so Lin-Manuel Miranda wanted him demonstrably "out of step" with Hamilton and the newly formed American sensibilities (which is why his choreography makes him look like he's running to catch up). All of the music styles Miranda used in the show -- R&B, Ragtime/Jazz, Hip Hop -- are uniquely and distinctly American in origin with the exception of King George's songs.
You're allowed to both love and hate each character. They're human beings and have their flaws, but yes, Hamilton sucks for cheating on his wife. Also, take it easy on Angelica--she loves her sister way too much to betray her. Thanks for the new video!
When i saw Hamilton in Sydney they had played on the fact that Philip was ‘nine’ and played by an adult by having his actor be incredibly tall, so when he said ‘And I just turned nine’ the actor stood all the way up and towered over everyone
When I saw it in Cleveland they did the opposite, the actor playing Laurens/Philip just happened to be relatively short in stature, and the part where he runs to Alex and hugs him, they actually had him leap into his arms and get held like a kid for a couple seconds... it was very funny.
One of my favorite little tidbits about this play is that Daveed Diggs said when he asked LMM how to portray Jefferson, Lin basically said In this play, Thomas Jefferson is Bugs Bunny!
@@radicaledward84 I mean, I saw people saying this in the livestream chat for the Circe saga release, so I don't think it's a reaction specific to Mortius.
Tomas Jefferson and Layffete are indeed both played by David Daveed, the person who plays Laurance also plays Hamilton's son Philip, James Madison is played by the same actor as Hurcules, and Mariah also plays Peggy, so yes, same actors :)
The actress playing Mariah also played Peggy the 3rd Schuyler sister. Some actors are playing double characters on the show. It's a standard stage practice.

Angelica Schuyler Church was one of the most brilliant women in the world, and corresponded with not only Hamilton, but Jefferson, Washington and Lafayette among others. We were told Hamilton was a "tomcat" back in Act 1. It's not surprising he was part of America's first sex scandal, is it.
Totally got the Dr. Horrible reference. And I agree! BTW - Jefferson & Franklin were in France helping them write their revolutionary papers. (so Jefferson's comment "what did I miss" is so true), They were first hand witnesses to the revolt that ended up killing King Louis XVI and Marie Antonette, which eventually led to the rise of Napoleon. Lafayette was playing both ends by helping the USA and France. ON a side note. Hubby and I own a hot air balloon. The first flight of a hot air balloon was in France in 1783, when Marie Antonette, Jefferson & Franklin along with 30,000 residents of Paris went out in the countryside to witness. There is a huge story behind that. Especially if you ignore the history books written by rich white guys.

To answer the questions of this video 1. why Rock N Roll? When Jefferson says, "I basically missed the late 80s", it is why he doesnt speak/sing/rap in the same way as the rest of the cast because he was in Paris. This song of Jefferson being in an 80s Jazz number and everyone else moved on to rap. 2. George Washington as a singer? You have no idea how good a singer George Washington is....prepared to be blown away in future song.
Haha, I really like that you're like "Why rock and roll?" for Jefferson and then immediately the song explains Lin's reasoning for it. "I guess I basically missed the late 80s" - He was away for the revolution, so they're musically showing that he's currently out of touch with the more hip-hop stylings of the revolutionaries and he needs to catch up on what he missed.
