Audition for A Musical Ensemble Today - Gilgamesh: The Musical!
I'd recommend First Burn, which is the version of Burn, which is the version that Lin did not release in the play.
Just like Mordis guys. 😂
For me, One Last Time is the masterpiece within the masterpiece. It always makes me cry. The country is relatively great in some ways, but also falls short of some ideals.
I'm not sure if it's obvous to other people or not, but I always took "George Washington's going home" to mean both leaving office for retirement AND his death, because he sadly only got about 2 years of retirement. I think that's why the end of that song is so emotional, because time passes quickly in this musical, and I believe that is referring just as much to his death as to his retirement
Hamilton says: "I haven't spent a cent that wasn't mine-" So, no he wasn't using government funds, he was paying Reynolds off from his personal wealth (which he married into). I don't know the exact history of how this went down, but Jefferson and co. did manage to dig up some info that he was paying someone off regularly... their assumption I believe was that he was using insider knowledge from his government position to scam the banks, and the payment to Reynolds was how he was doing that. Obviously what he's actually doing is unethical for totally different reasons, but as he says, he's not breaking any actual laws.
Random fun fact about the staging of ‘The Reynolds Pamphlet’ During the show they hand a copy of the pamphlet off to the conductor of the orchestra. You can see Jefferson do it right near the end of the song. On the tour I saw, the conductor was sitting too far away for a handoff to happen so instead the conductor pulled out a copy that was hiding behind his music. It was a total surprise 😂
Hamilton was fired by John Adam’s, he was admitting to the affair to avoid prison for stealing money before he was fired. All the money was his but it seemed like he was stealing money
Hahaha, been waiting for you to realize the mistake since the last video! Yes, the spoken text is from Washington's real final address. I'd encourage you to look up the cast's performance of One Last Time at the White House in 2016. It was a farewell performance for the Obama administration. Not a dry eye in the house.
Will forgive you for the early cut off. King George, when he was advised that Washington was stepping down that, reportedly said "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.". Maria Reynolds divorced James Reynolds shortly (in contemporary time) after all this came to light. It was much harder for women to get divorces then. Burr was her lawyer! Reynolds was known to have been a violent man, who turned that violence on his wife and daughter.
With Hamilton - “I never spent a cent that wasn’t mine.” - He didn’t embezzle.
Phillipa Soo is an amazing singer....goddamn.
I honestly can't understand how someone can be so bad in text comprehension. You have clear facts stated in lyrics (and subtitles), yet you completely disregard what they're saying, and then go on a tangent about something that's completely opposite to what's actually happened. And all that, while being an American, thus having at least some context about the history of your own country. I'm not from US, I'm not even a native English speaker. Yet I don't remember having any issue with understanding the events of Hamilton on my first watch.
As an American, I don't get it either.
@@ms_scribbles Are you guys new to the internet? LOL People miss things, especially when they are trying to analyze them on the fly, and on several different layers. Lighten up.
In the Reynolds Pamphlet, Hamilton goes as far as to argue that James Reynolds, along with his wife, had conspired the scheme to "extort money from me."
Maria Reynolds was the wife of James Reynolds, and was Alexander Hamilton's mistress between 1791 and 1792. She became the object of much scrutiny after the release of the Reynolds Pamphlet and central in America's first political sex scandal.
I didn't say anything in the last video bc I figured you didn't know but HOW DARE YOU MAKE US WAIT ALL THIS TIME TO FINISH THE SONGGGGG
"I am unconscious of intentional error" = I do not know of an error I made intentionally
If it's intentional, is it an error? Perhaps he meant "evident error" or some such.
@@JaggerG Errors=mistakes, which can be purposeful/done with malicious intent or accidental/done with good intent, just with different outcomes than expected.
You should watch were the cast sang one last time ar the White House when Obama was leaving
You should have tagged the first few minutes of this video onto the end of the previous one. Come on! -don’t tell us you couldn’t have re-edited what you recorded all in the same session! _”I never spent a cent that wasn’t mine“_ - Hamilton used his own money, not embezzled government funds, to pay off the blackmail. And he brought out the receipts to prove it.
So, a couple of things, then Jefferson, Madison, and Burr accuse him of speculation, that's what insider trading was called at the time. Second, Hamilton technically did a gray area thing: he used the government money then immediately replaced it when he could, so he did technically use government funds but also technically used his own money, so while what he did wasnt right, they didn't tell antone because the end result was nothing was missing. That's also why he said, "I never spent a cent that wasn't mine."
Where did you get that in the musical? He DIRECTLY STATES "I never spent a cent that wasn't mine." He did *not* take government money and then repay it with his own.
@@ms_scribbles I think the comment is talking historically. And that would explain how Jefferson's people managed to uncover it in the first place.
@ms_scribbles If he wasn't taking from the government, Jefferson's people wouldn't have been able to find anything for Jefferson to have gone to him with accusations in the first place. If you check again, Jefferson says he has "the cheque stubs from different accounts", and hamilton says check his list against the stubs and see the consistency, then says he never spent a cent that wasn't his. He essentially took a loan from the government funds and then repayed his loan, probably because he didn't have the cash by the deadline Reynolds gave him, so he took, then on payday repayed. He kept his own list so that if anyone tried to say he committed treason, he could prove he put it all back. If he never took anything, then Jefferson wouldn't have cheque stubs or anything that would look like Hamilton took money.
Adams was the first ambassador to England after the war... where he did indeed meet KG3. The English were not kind in their treatment or opinion of Adams... some papers even called for him to kill himself.
The song “ In the eyes of a Hurricane, portrays his arrogance . He thinks his writing or Bull can solve everything.
Heh, I know it's confusing, but he was quoting an actual 18th century speech from Washington that Hamilton wrote the first draft of. The language is going to be a little confusing. It's not early 17th century Shakespearean language, but it can be a little brain melting anyway. What he's saying is that despite knowing he made mistakes, none of them were intentional. As in, he didn't do anything wrong on purpose.
You are correct. It's a direct recital of George Washington's Farewell Speech when he left office. He knew he was not clever with words, so he used Hamilton's skills. He gave him the outline of what he wanted to convey, and Hamilton used his writing skills to make it into a great speech.
I interpreted it as him not being cognizant of any errors, but assuming he likely made some and remaining humble, to encourage his successors to make improvements and corrections.
NO! It is not embezzlement to use your OWN MONEY to pay off a blackmailer. They were accusing him of using the tax payers' money. He didn't. He used his own.
WTF? Why do you keep saying that paying off a blackmailer with your OWN money is treason?? I'm so confused by what you're saying. It's starting to piss me off now. What he did was a PERSONAL FAILING. It was not treason, it was not misuse of government funds, it was not ANY of that. They tried to accuse him of it, but they were wrong. That's WHY THEY LEFT. They had suspicions that were proven wrong. WTF is going on????
Sorry, I'm just getting frustrated. They spell out exactly what is going on and you seem to be deliberately misunderstanding. Jefferson and crew: "We believe you've committed this crime." Hamilton: "No, I haven't, and this is my proof." Jefferson and crew: "Oh..." Hamilton: "I've done things I'm not proud of, but I haven't committed a crime." You: "AHA! SO HE HAS COMMITTED TREASON!" What??
He said he spent his own money. So he did not spend government money. No treason just adultry
When you've finished the musical, you should watch the performance of One Last Time at the White House, given around the time of Obama's end of term. There was some real emotion there: Chris Jackson could see Washington's portrait while he was performing.
Hamilton payed the black mail with his own money not the governments.
The text is Washington's actual farewell speech written by Hamilton
me and my mom were speechless in the end of One Last Time, she doesn't like musicals but she was stunned.
You should cover Congratulations and First Burn, deleted songs from this part of the play.
YES PLEASE DO THEY'RE SO GOOD ALSO THE FIRST VERSION OF 'SCHUYLER DEFEATED'
He didn't spend any government money on the payoff so it wasn't embezzlement. He used his own money.
Yeah, was surprised he missed the line: “I never spent a cent that wasn’t mine” Guess he was just too busy getting onto Hamilton for claiming it wasn’t embezzlement.
@AdamNisbett the one thing I've noticed is that he doesn't really pay attention to the lyrics haha
@@auriellis yeah, It’s understandable when he’s in the midst of noting something about the music or an unrelated topic but it seemed like the whole song he just kept refusing to acknowledge what he’d heard. Alexanders’s like “It wasn’t embezzlement” and Nick: “Yes it was!” Hamilton “I didn’t commit treason” Nick “It was treason!” Hamilton: “Do you agree I haven’t misused my government position?” Jefferson, Adams: “Yeah sure whatever”. Nick “why are they not pushing more?”
He didn't spend any government money. He only used his own money to pay Reynolds.
On the unconscious of intentional errors, he’s just saying he didn’t purposefully do anything wrong
In other language: To the best of my knowledge I haven’t done anything wrong, but I’m sure I’ve probably made unintentional mistakes along the way.
Did you realize you cut this off in the middle of a song? He knows now.
I had to go to someone else's video to finish One Last Time just to finish the song. It was the minor chord that is unresolved because the song isn't finished.
I see you draw your final breath.
YOU PULLED A MORTIUS!!!!!
When you mentioned Maui from Moana - Same composer! 😅🙃
We'll Be Fine in my opinion is a song that's too reliant on repeating the theme of Athena (Warrior of the "Miiiiind") for the fifth time or so. (Maybe he'd be fiiiiine, maybe we'd unwiiiiiind, maybe I could sleep at niiiiight). It just feels a bit uninspired and boring to me at those lyrics. I like the rest of the song though, Telemachus' singer is amazing and I wish the actual duet part was longer. Just an overreliance on Athena's already-established theme and personally I also just don't like the part where Athena says she can't sleep at night as a goddess. Love in Paradise is a song I WISH I could call my favourite of the saga, but the Athena part at the start could've been its own "song" and I especially just don't like how Athena's part in the middle of Calypso's breaks the flow. That could have easily been bridged in the actual song by Calypso singing either to Odysseus or just to us that they had been 'happily' together for so long. Calypso's (and Odysseus') part is AMAZING though.
Can't wait to see your reaction when you realize you cut off the song before it got to the BEST PART 🤣
I am really enjoying watching this along with you Flipp as you are providing some interesting comments and reactions along with analysis of musical content. I am still waiting for the penny to drop in your head and put this all into historical context of what is going on in the early 80s in the USA…. I think in the course of your commenting you have missed some key lyrics while focused on the style of the music. The doctor sang about how bachelors come into the hospital and leave with things unexplained…that there is a new virus is spreading and spreading and spreading…a killer that is not being talked about….. this isn’t a spoiler as it’s all been clearly laid out up to this point that Whizzer is sick and dying from this virus….penny dropped yet? Because you are right to feel sad…. Yes there is a lot of tritones (commonly referred to as the devil’s interval in music theory due to their discordant sound) in the music but I’m not sure their use has been connected yet to the foreshadowing tragic nature of the story. You mentioned that these were two separate musicals originally, but are you aware that they are actually parts 2 and 3 of a trilogy. Part 1, titled “In Trousers” chronicled Marvin coming to terms with being gay and trying to balance doing what he feels is right and what he is expected to do by family and society. He wants it all… to be loved, to be taken care of (have my dinner ready when I get home) and to always be right and his wife/boyfriend to acquiesce…..we finally see him growing in Act 2 (Part 3) as he has faced losing both wife and boyfriend and nearly family, and now when getting some of it back is facing losing it all again.. it’s such a deep story that continually pulls the audience in to experience and feel everything the characters do…. They don’t break the fourth wall because in this case there was never a fourth wall erected. We are part of their story as they tell it. Looking forward to Part 7 as you round this up and we get your final reactions.
This Is a good lest, I may not agree with every placement of the songs, But I like you're opinion on the music, And you made your reasoning pretty clear, great lest. 🤗💖🤗
Now you Just need to add the Venjunce saga and the Ithaca saga when It comes out and were good can't wait to see your overall favourite and least favorite songs.
Here for it!
Charybdis is pronounced Care-rib-dis
Thank you for agreeing on love in paradise. I finished that song and felt something close to awe. It's maybe one of my favorite musical songs ever.
Banger! thanks for posting this!
You need to see "One Last Time" performed at the White House!
Hera, older sister and wife of Zeus, goddess of motherhood
yes it is accurate that to this day we’re using hamilton’s financial system in the US, over the years many democratic-republican presidents attempted to get rid of the national bank only for the country to collapse each time it really is a genius system and yeah the federal bank has crazy power lmao that was what hamilton wanted
Sweet baby cheesus - are you serious? You missed the BEST part of the damn song! 🫠😫😤
I cannot watch this dude anymore - it hurts too much... please do some research on time stamps and where to stop.
So, Hades is just the place where all souls go to die and is also inhabited by several other gods & goddess associated with darkness, death, etc. There's basically 3 levels: Elysium (which is a pretty similar concept to Heaven but only for those who were truly good or heroic), Asphodel [Fields] for just the regular folk who lived life but didn't do anything noteworthy (good or bad), and then Tartarus which is eternal punishment for whoever is sent down there. There are other parts but those are the main three that are technically afterlives unless you count Styx's Shores where souls without payment are either stuck there for eternity or 100 yrs (depending on the myth). There's also a belief (I don't know how popular it was in the actual like peak of Hellenism -Greek Paganism) that those who died at sea couldn't go the Hades because the ocean is Poseidon's domain. The only reason the Underworld (or Hades, you can use them interchangeably) is associated with Heck is because Disney's Hercules and early Christianity's habit of being very not chill with other religions, but especially multi-god ones. Also, for some lore on the god Hades, he is King of the Underworld but is God of the Dead, Riches (like gems & metals)/Stones/Minerals - basically everything you'd find underground. You've probably heard about the Olympians, who resided on Mt. Olympus, well Hades and other deities are Chthonic, meaning they have associations with the earth, but that also extends to agriculture gods/goddesses such as Persephone & her mother, Demeter. By all accounts, besides their meeting myth their marriage is probably one of the more stable amongst the Greek gods, but yanno, if there wasn't a tragic tale in any Greek story I'd be surprised honestly.
The strings at the end sounded like the Fates singing "any way the wind blows"
