A lot of stuff with the food in the first act is playing into expected gender roles of the time. Trina talks a lot about having to make Marvin's dinner and have things set up perfectly for when Marvin comes home from work. Whizzer often joins in with her and talks about the same thing in his own songs. Marvin had those same expectations of Whizzer as his partner. Even though he wasn't a woman, Marvin expected Whizzer to play that role and never considered doing any of the domestic labor himself.
A lot of the stuff about cooking is about the labor that goes into cooking. Trina talks about spending a whole day to make the meal for Mendel when he comes over to see Jason for the first time. She also has that breakdown when making the banana carrot surprise. Trina's relationship with food in act 1 seems to be full of anxiety and maybe guilt she doesn't have any outlets for her frustration and is unable to assume that the men in her life will suddenly begin to take her feelings into account, so she just performs the way that she feels like she has to and crumbles under the pressure.
I really like the song This had Better Come to a Stop, which begins with the late for dinner section, in which Marvin berates Whizzer for not performing the domestic role he expects of him, because it allows both Trina and Whizzer to demonstrate the extremity of Marvin's expectations towards them, not just in the kitchen but in every part of their lives. Everything they do must center around him, his schedule, his priorities, his ego. Even though Marvin and Trina are divorced, Marvin insists on insinuating himself into her home because he wants "a tight knit family". He needs them all to act like he didn't do anything wrong and didn't cause any strife for his family so that he can maintain his preferred lifestyle and "have it all".
Just a point of clarity, as it can be confusing, but it's actually all there in the libretto - Mendel, Marvin, and Trina are all Jewish. Mendel is a non-believer, but still Jewish. Whizzer is half-Jewish. Dr. Charlotte is Jewish as well, but her girlfriend, Cordelia the caterer, is gentile.
Ok so a couple things: Falsettos is basically part 2 and 3 of William Finn's Marvin Trilogy. Part 1, In Trousers, was initially put on in 1978 and is about Marvin's relationships with his high school sweetheart, his teacher, and Trina - basically the three most important women in his life - and ends with him choosing to go off with Whizzer and get divorced. Part 2, March of the Falsettos, was initially put on in 1981, and part 3, Falsettoland (which you're on now), was initially put on in 1990. MotF and Falsettoland were combined into Falsettos in 1992 for Broadway.
2) Mendel is... mid, but he winds up being a decent father figure for Jason. The whole thing with the "Year of the Child" scene is that he was purposefully being annoying to head off Trina and Marvin's argument - that part of his character is clearer in the "Canceling the Bar Mitzvah"/"Everyone Hates His Parents" scene. The cut song "Square Tables, Round Tables" makes it even more prominent, if that's possible. He is still a TERRIBLE psychiatrist lmao.
Love the reaction. I was part of a civic theater that did a condensed version of Falsettoland. One correction I would like make is that this was based in the early 80s when AIDS was just being seen. The three parts were written over the decade Men in Trousers late 70s, March of the Falsettos early 80s, and Falsettoland in the late 80s. Then March and Land were combined to make the full show Falsettos
It's such a complex and beautiful musical
Yay Act Two!! It's so happy!!
23:10 The composer is William Finn!
In trousers (the first in the Marvin trilogy) is such a wonderful piece of art, and discovery. It’s very artistic, and it’s about mavrin from this musical. And I’d highly encourage watching it. Though I will warn you that there’s a LOT more “I say this, but it’s actually a metaphor” in that musical. And a lot of it is just in Marvin’s mind etc
Jason: Asking about girls
"ask your dad"
Also his dad: *insert thrill of first love here*
I love your reaction style sm😭 I’d love it if you reacted to the guy who didn’t like musicals on your channel, especially since the whole proshot is available on youtube
Speaking of working out while singing on stage, you should TOTALLY check out Whipped Into Shape from Legally Blonde - The Musical. Such good singing, super good performance overall, super cool!!
6:42 yes exactly. The show was initially going to be called “The Pettiness of Misogyny” lols
Nick you asked about food. The Jewish Mother is all about food…EAT SOMETHING!
Also I feel the music is different too. William Finn’s composing has evolved and also the world is a very different world in the second act
Also his name is Mendel, not Mevil haha
@@vox_t.m.d4777 yeaaaahhh I watched that back and was like, top comment is I messed the name up
@@FlippMusic Hiiiiis naaaaame iiiiiis *Mendel* (AAAAAAAAAHHHAAAAA) ! 😂
Sorry just one of my favourite sound beats from Act 1, especially the way Andrew Rannells really lets loose on that "Aaaahaaa". 😂 Glad you're enjoying the vibes and new characters of Act 2, can't wait for the further parts of the reaction!
Thanks for the reaction as always Flipp!!
the second act was written years after act one as a one-act play
And it ends here no need to keep watching. Just live in ignorant bliss and believe me when I say it ends here
@@jacobclemons2458 my first time watching falsettos I actually stopped after the chess game cause I thought we wouldn’t see whizzer again and so when I rewatched the full thing I was in tears. I was like “I COULD’VE AVOIDED THIS.”
It's been a while since I've revisited this show, almost burst in to tears when they first sang "everything will be alright"
@Denf0 that line hurts more from holding to the ground
you have such great reactions!!! i was wondering when the next hamilton was coming out. if you don’t know yet that’s fine
