@@AlastorShadow0 Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Octopath Traveler 2, Tales of Arise, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, Ys 8-9, Trails (your pick) to name a few. Some of these will appeal to some more than others. There's also western RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3, Ghost of Tsushima, and Elden Ring which although made by a Japanese company is done in the Western style. So yeah.... have at it.
Man, this is making me realize 2 things: 1) you and I share the same tastes in RPGs and 2) as someone said, this feels like we're experiencing a new golden age of RPGs (and gaming as a whole). The last year, this year and next year are looking absolutely brickwalled with amazing, promising releases. So happy to be a gamer right now. Also, keep up the awesome work! ✌

I was helping out on a fan game project a decade ago and the person I was working with had a side project dream game called "Kingdoms of the Dump" that at the time was basically just concept art.

This is a great year for RPGs. Romancing SaGa 2 is one of my all time favorites. That succesion system realy made for a unique interesting gameplay loop. That official translation back in 2017 was like a dream come true but this remake is absolutly amazing.

Love all these old RPGs getting re-released and remastered for new audiences. I pray that one day Radiata Stories gets a modern re-release, It'd do so much better today than back in the day. Great videos, keep it up!

I remember, back in the day, we'd be lucky to get maybe 5 solid JRPGS in a year.....now it's like 12+.....
Kingdoms of the Dump is probably the game that resembles the SNES aesthetic/music etc. the most out of all the indie JRPGs... well, at least the ones I've seen. Will definitely grab that one and Quartet once they drop. I hope Level-5 markets Decapolice a little at least, looks like an interesting concept. There are just so many interesting RPGs these days... makes me wish we had more of them back in the 90s, but alas, that era was very different. Great stuff!
I am so hyped for Dragon Quest. I really enjoyed V and VIII. But XI was the one that let me fall in love with the series completly.

Since I love any opportunity to talk about Richard Dawkins, he coined the term meme to explain how cultural aspects like fashion and catchphrases interplay with human evolution similar to genes. He picked an ancient word for imitate and shortened it so it rhymes with gene. That's why it's pronounced meem rather than how it's read as me-me.

So many great games coming out this year. The highlights for me are Dragon Quest 3 HD, Ys X and Visions of Mana. Not to mention Trails through Daybreak.

Great list! So many games here that I can't wait to play. Zelda, Brothership, DQ3, Fantasy Life, Beloved Rapture, Sky Oceans, and Kingdoms of Dump all look incredible! My wallet is going to hate me by the end of the year lol
Sky Oceans is at the top for me, no question. Arcadia was my jam, still playing it. Sky Pirates are the best kinds of pirates.
Quite surprised to not see Trails Daybreak (July 5) on this list, but still a great games lineup. 😁
I mean, at minimum I'm going to be picking up 聖剣伝説(Mana), Dragon Quest 3 (gotta name my protag Bardock cuz it's Goku and Gohan in 1&2), Zelda, Romancing Saga (difficulty is fine but could this be a tad less tedious than it was on the Super Famicom), Phantom Brave, and Ys X.
Looking forward to the MvC collection from Capcom this summer to get in some fast twitch gaming in-between the rpgs. Lot of good memories from the arcade/Saturn/Dreamcast right there.

If the Mana series continues on like that Seiken Densetsu 3 remake, I'm all for it! Kingdoms of the Dump looks cool, too, but I am SO close to actually clearing my backlog that I won't be buying anything anytime soon. That and my purchases are usually pretty spontaneous: game's on the wishlist; on sale for dirt cheap; bank account's looking good; maybe I buy it. One thing I have begun, though, is that I'm taking another run at Final Fantasy Legend, because I've been looking to get into more SaGa games than just Frontier, and I think if I just have it as my laundry day game, that'll be a good fit. That one's your fault, though; your recent video on the series inspired me. 😛

I already have Farmagia pre-ordered formy Switch, and will definitely pre-order the upcoming Fantasy Life title as well!
David, the surprise drop of it during a certain Nintendo Direct, and then gameplay preview video felt like the BEST fever dream ever...I sometimes still feel the need to pinch myself, because it doesn't seem like all that long ago I mused to myself "I love Fantasy Life to the moon and back, but you know what would be awesome? A new, genuine sequel for the Nintendo Switch!"
Other than that, the Romacing Saga 2 remake looks amazing, too!

Some games that I really want from this year that you juts mentioned are Romancing Saga 2 remake, Farmiga, Dragon Quest III HD 2D, Y X: Nordics, and Fantasian Neo Dimension. There are is just so many JRPGs coming out this year, plus some that are not mentioned in this video. We haven't had this many amazing JRPGs since the PS2 era. I also hope Konami eventually announces the Suikoden remasters, maybe at this year's Tokyo Game Show alongside some Tokimeki Memorial game news. I can't believe Sakaguchi is back on consoles after nearly 13 years with the release of The Last Story. I still cannot believe that, out of all companies, Square Enix is the one who is publishing the game. Maybe he might have some involvement in ff17 after all if Neo Dimension is successful. My wallet is starting to hurt already!😭😭 By the way, your little doggie looks so cute and adorable. Why hasn't she left you alone all day? Maybe she loves you too much I guess.
Decapolice looks really interesting, first I'd heard of it. Metaphor will be what's consuming me this October.

Excited for Romancing Saga 2 and Metaphor. I had Dragon Quest (Warrior) 3 on the GB Color back in the day. That was a hard game lol
Trails Through Daybreak in July, Visions of Mana in August, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom in September, Metaphor ReFantazio in October, Dragon Quest III Remake in November, Ys X Nordics sometime in the Fall, Fantasian New Dimension towards the end of the year (finally out of Apple Arcade jail, hooray), Decapolice if it's still actually coming out in 2024, and the Suikoden 1+2 Remasters if they're actually coming out this year (who knows at this point though, since we've heard nothing for a long time on them) are my JRPG picks for the rest of the year.
Some other non-JRPG stuff I've got my eye on too are Master Detective Archives:Rain Code on PS5 in October, Assassin's Creed Shadows in November (I have this weird soft spot for AC for some reason), and Dragon Age: The Veilguard (doing a wait-and-see on this one, but hoping it will be decent).
2025 for now, Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood are at the top of my list, but the Dragon Quest 1+2 Remakes are up there. Some other non-JRPG stuff I'm also looking forward to are that The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy (from the same team who did Danganronpa, which I've all loved), Grand Theft Auto 6 (yeah I know, but Rockstar's track record has been fantastic, and they make banger games), and maybe a Front Mission 2 Remake physical version in there somewhere, similar to what happened for the remake of the first one. I'd also love to hear some news around Dragon Quest XII, Front Mission 3 Remake, and the Trails Through Daybreak II North American release (we might be getting news on this at Anime Expo here in a few weeks in early July though, fingers crossed).
Lots to be excited about for sure, and I'll be there for them!

I'm def getting Mana, Saga, and Dragon Quest! If I can afford it I might get Zelda and Ys later. Provided they release on something I can play them on, only modern consoles I have atm are PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

Trails Through Daybreak? Maybe you're already covered that one and I missed it. Definitely getting Ys X, as well as Mana, DQ3 as well as Trails Through Daybreak.

Have you seen anything on the game Mirthwood? I recently stumbled across a preview of it, and it looks like a really cool indie RPG.
It's kind of like a 2D/overhead Skyrim/Stardew Valley set in medieval times but with a hidden fantasy element.

So many amazing games coming out in the months to come, think if I had to pick a top 3 though (no order) would be: DQ 3 Remake, Metaphor & Fantasian - but you can't go wrong with any of these, they all look amazing.

metaphor re fantazio looks great but I have so much to play. Think I am going to hold off and hope it gets a Switch 2 release. Fantasy Life is probably going to consume me like the 3ds game did though!
2023 was a banger year for gaming in general, but 2024 is turning out to be the year of the RPG and I couldn't be happier. I'm purchasing a gaming laptop this week so I can play some of these upcoming releases. I'm especially looking forward to Beloved Rapture (I really hope it becomes one of the indie hits of the year, the story and art style look amazing and woohoo for a game with a gay protagonist) and DQ III. And I'll be playing the new Mana and Metaphor Re Fantazio on Playstation for sure. As far as new RPGs, I've already completed Unicorn Overlord, Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and loved them both. I think it might be a 2025 release, but Lost Hellden looks interesting. My plate is going to be so full this year and it's delicious!

I was looking forward to dragon quest 3 2d/hd remake the most then the announcement of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 also cannot wait for farmagia and fairy tail 2 (loved the 1st game on the switch) both made by Hiro mashima, btw farmagia is apparently also getting an anime too which pretty cool too

Just the video I needed! Recommendations requested: what other (J)RPGs from previous years should I get for the Switch while I can? I really appreciate a good (convoluted) story and turn-based combat. Previously I enjoyed FFX.
Some nice turn-based RPGs with good stories are, I Am Setsuna, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Mato Anomalies, Octopath Traveler II, Bravely Default II (this one has a specific combad system and can be grindey, just so you´re aware), Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, Live A Live, Persona 5 Royal and maybe Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travellers if you´re still looking for more to play.

The only day one's for me are Fantasian, DecaPolice, and fate/Stay Night. There's also theoretically Suikoden I+II HD-2D, but I am skeptical about their release for this year. I might grab Visions of Mana and/or Dragon Quest III HD-2D if I play and finish Trials of Mana Remake and Dragon Quest XI S, respectively, before hand. I queue games in my backlog (25 at a time) and crunch a RNG x-times to decide what to play next. So it's complete chance what I will be playing next after Monster Hunter Stories HD.

As someone who also misses when Atlus used to make a bunch of other games, I think Metaphor looks exactly like another Persona game I don't care about.

There are so many great ones on this list for us Switch owners, but I can't help but hope the last two on the list eventually get console releases. They both look great!
Zelda and Dragon Quest are the only franchises I have faith in anymore. I've picked up a few new ones like bravely default and disgaea. But Zelda and Dragon Quest are my 2 top franchises. I will be getting both dq 1,2,3 and the 2d Zelda
