- In hindsight, it is kinda surprising it took me this long to do a video like this. But after seeing one too many posts about the "state of 3D platformers", I was inspired to give my two cents and show off some cool indie games in the process.
Should be a fun time. ^^

UPDATE: Vincent Prom (log64) has confirmed that he plans on putting Pilfer: Story of Light on Switch! No ETA for it currently though.
Also, Frogun Encore is now available on PC and consoles!
Everyone's talking about the games, I'm paying attention to Ben's new avatar poses! Juma's doing great work!
Thank you so much! I'm very happy you enjoyed my game's demo.
I really love how as soon as I dove deeper into the Indie scene, the comments are a lot less salty and toxic, and a lot more sweet and genuine.
Proof that pure ambition will always win against greedy corpos
So happy to have Frogun featured among all of these amazing games
Wow, I completely missed the Super Kiwi 64 update. I'll give it a shot right away.
With the fact that this video came out in June, three days prior to Sonic’s birthday, ending on a Sonic inspired indie game was a perfect choice. 👌🏻
No way! I backed both Frogun AND Rolling Rascal! Thanks for giving the love they deserved!
Edit: also thanks for turning me on to Warrior Spirit; can’t wait to play it and let alone, BACK it!
As someone who's both a fan of indie 3D platformers as well as an aspiring indie game designer, I love videos like these. They're both so inspiring and fill me with so much determination to make my own indie 3D platformers.
It's always good to see platformers are still thriving. I freaking love Indies! No matter what genre.
I really appreciate you taking the time to play PaperKlay!
You explained the game perfectly!
It's only a matter of time before Ben makes an Indie Kart Racer video with stuff like Nightmare Kart and... stuff I most likely don't know about because I'm too into the Indie scene like the rest of y'all.
And yeah you can tell I don't have much else to say... other than the fact I'm still waiting for someone to make an Ape Escape successor, granted that series doesn't get much love anyway so that might just be a pipe dream.
It's not a direct successor, but The Big Catch does have some Ape Escape inspiration, with the main collectibles being fish you have to chase down and catch.
@@BenjaMage I see, well it's something.
@BenjaMage - Saddened by the fact that you single-
-handedly overlooked the one game called "Nikoderiko:
The Magical World" in this showcase of platformers,
since the music behind "Nikoderiko" is David Wise (yes,
the same Wise famously known for "Donkey Kong Country").
Nikoderiko's announcement happened when I was already in the editing stage of this video.
But that said, it is on my radar.
Heeyyyy Rollin Rascal is in here! I saw you join the Discord not too long ago and I was hoping you'd bring some attention to this gem of a game!
Most games I've been playing have been Indie games and a few of them have been 3D platformers. Last year was when I dip my toe into the poor. 2 games I got were Smushi Come Home and Submerged. Smushi is a light-hearted cozy platformer about a cute mushroom char just trying to get home. The play style reminded me of Mario 64. Submerged is my fav of the 2 though because of the story. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world and you play as a sister trying to take care of her wounded and sick brother. The story is very heavy, but here's the interesting part, there's hardly any dialogue and you learn the story of both the siblings and the world by explore this ruined city's sky scrapers. So yeah very heavy on the visual storytelling, which I enjoy. There is a sequel to this game that takes place after the events of this game and it involves the siblings again, but I haven't played it yet. Both of these games I played on the Switch. I've also recently played a demo of another game, it's called Europa where you play as boy, who's an android, who explores the world of Europa (based on an actual location in space, it's one of Jupiter's moons). From the demo, the gameplay does remind me of Super Mario Galaxy. So I'll be playing the game when it comes out (which is supposively this year).
I think it’s amazing that the people behind Rollin’ Rascal are the same who made the Smashified renders from almost a decade ago. Glad to see the team apply what they learned to their own game IP.
Ah that'd explain it! The renders and animation was so fluid I figured they had to have experience in the field from somewhere, that's awesome that they've gone onto making a game! :D
I'm really sad you didn't cover Misc. A Tiny Tale. There's a demo available and is basically if Chibi-Robo was a 3D platformer. Super cool and cute stuff!
To be fair, he knows about nearly 100 3D platformers. It'll be rough to cover them all.
Like, I'd love it if more people covered Distance, but it's been out for years and got sorely slept on. (It's a racing game, but it's also definitely a 3D platformer based on how it plays)
@@Tribow Yeah I know, I just wanted to shout out another great indie game.
Foekoe got me introduced to Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom bought it months ago and playing it so much to do 100% and having so much freaking fun!!!!!!!!!!!! It's like if Pizza Tower was an 3D Platformer instead of a 2D Platformer!!!!!
This is the first video of yours that I've come across, and I just wanted to say that it's such a good video! Very well presented, and there were a bunch of games that I hadn't heard of yet, most of which have now been added to my ever more bloated Steam wishlist...! 😅
_Super Kiwi 64_
Oh yeah, that was a decent little distraction. Kind of empty though...
_...got a free update_
Wait. Time trials? New levels? A boss? I had no idea this was happening! Time to get that update downloaded!
I want a part 2 such a great video❤!!!
Another 3D platformer I would add is Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, my personal 2023 GOTY
I've just discovered your channel due to your direct reaction and the niches that your videos go into make my autistic obsession in these topics go squeee!! A game a lot of people haven't heard of and is actually really unique is Big Bang Mini, its an arcade top down shooter unlike any I've seen before because each world had its own unique theming, and not just the generic ice, desert ect, but instead was about going around the Earth and showing the culture and every world even changes major mechanics and has a drastically different art style.
I was really hoping you would cover Kukoos: Lost Pets because it’s actually a really fun indie 3D co-op platformer made by PetitFabrik. The game weirdly enough plays a lot like Sackboy ABA, Donkey Kong, and Fall Guys all at the same time and it’s great.
paperklay essentially "tearaway needed a sequel that expanded upon it's systems and art"
Great collection as always Benja! I was already considering Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, but now I KNOW I'm gonna have a good tine with it. Buying that on Steam soon!
23:53 I have to agree the floating arm looks out of place, I feel maybe it'd be better if it was connected to the hat the warrior wears?
I don't tend to follow the indie scene too much so I appreciate videos like these, definitely a couple of games here that I'll keep a lookout for! :D
Between you and Nitro Rad, I don't have to dig too much for Indie recommendations.
There are so so many cool indie 3d platformers thanks for highlighting some!
Similarly, shoot ‘em ups saw a renaissance/revival in the mid/late 2010’s/early 2020’s, mostly from Doujin/indie devs. Not to say they were dead completely prior to that. During that time, we got games like Drainus, Sol Cresta, Devil Blade Reboot, Cotton Reboot, Gunvein, Crimzon Clover (which kicks total butt btw), Rolling Gunner and so on which I do recommend. I prefer vertical to horizontal (not that I hate horizontal STGs, in fact I like them just as much, Cotton being my fav of all time) because you don’t have to worry about crashing into obstacles (Cotton doesn’t do that and Drainus gives you that option which is good because I hate losing a life to a stupid wall rather than a bullet) but that’s just me. Oh and the option to rotate your screen in some. I know that’s a niche feature but I’m all here for it as I find it enhances the experience imo. The number one reason to buy a monitor that can rotate vertically if you ask me. I brought that up because it had a similar story but STGs aren’t being made by the major studios these days (Sol Cresta being the rare exception) but smaller teams/indie devs. Nice to see the 3D platforming torch being picked up by smaller teams. I remember those games being all the rage during the PS2 days. I do want to play Astro Bot when it comes out.
Those are some awesome games to try out, nice coverage
When you brought up _Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom_ having a character named Morio, I thought of Morio Kishimoto. One of the current directors for the _Sonic_ games.
Nice video man! My Wishlist on Steam is full right now because of you! Cant wait to play Rollin Rascal
this video came from heaven. so much good stuff to look for. thank you
Great video man, Paperklay at 19:17 has some amazing potential, ive been following the devlogs regularly and the dev is also such a great guy. Definitely support these indie gems!!!
I'll be sure to check out pilfer, frogun, and super kiwi 64. Thank you for the recommendations!!
Maybe it’s just me but this video was a better viewpoint on showing the positive state of 3D platformers than nitro rad’s video! Yours showed that indie platformers should be seen with the same amount of love, respect, and enthusiasm as the triple A platformers, instead of abandoning one for the other like what nitro rad kind of implied (at least in my eyes)
My only problem with indie 3D platforms is more so a personal reason, I mostly play games on my PS5 and it’s hard to play a lot of these games since a good amount of them never had a port to consoles and if they do is only exclusive to a specific platform, so I wish for the future we can see more platformers be released to more consoles! Sorry if I go on for too long I hope you get what I mean!
Yeah, that was kinda something I didn't like about that vid, like what if someone really likes the world and characters, what do they do then? just abandon this world they really like just because? it's been kind of a thing I've not been liking about more and more of his new video's, first Pseudoregalia's Metriodvania debate trying to sound like he's right and then that.
Funny you show that Gex reveal from Limited run, Because they just had their direct where they rehashed that same trailer for their new revival and... and... That bloody cat... That damn *creature* is back...
Bubsy
So glad for indies!
Give us more videos like this. I want to see more games I can play
Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario Galaxy and one of my favorite platformers (and games), period, so hearing there's an indie game inspired by it definitely piqued my interest! Definitely hoping it gets a Switch port eventually!
I Just Realized Jelly The Octopus in Cuphead,Inspired The King's Leap In The DLC
26:33 for the Party Crashers reference.
BenjaMage & Sophist collaboration when?
Immediately downloaded the Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom demo and...wow. This is the game I didn't know my life was missing.
we need more youtuber talking about 3d platformers super passionate about it. Ruffy the riverside is one of my most anticipated along with misc tiny tale and myth caller. Don't know if any one heard of myth caller but it is 3d platforming mix with creature collecting
As far as Sonic inspired games go, let's not forget Freedom Planet!
It was one of the better 2D, classic Sonic inspired games.
A cat called Pluto, eh? In a primarily-space-like-setting, and he's one of the underlings of the primary antagonist?
I know a certain fuzzy alien who'd never hear the end of it.
Also: The moral of Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom is, Nintendo will always win against Elon Musk.
A certain fuzzy alien? Who would that be?
@@Drawboy66 SDN-008, Pluto.
@@ilikecurry2345 Oh! The Stardroids from Mega Man 5 on the Game Boy!
I forgot about that!
I had to leave early from the livestream due to work, but now I wanna tried Pilfer and Paperklay in the future ( also I’m embarrassed that i confused bawk with cluck in the chat)
I really like the new pose where you put your hand on the back of your head. Also, what is the species of Rolling Rascal?
I Demand Indie 3d Platformers 2 video
I think Rollin’ Rascal does look incredibly fun, but Christ I don’t like the shape of the MC’s head.
When the paper isn’t Klay
You should check out the Big Catch
You could totally make a squeal to this video later maybe.
Have you heard about a recently announced game called "AKIMBOT" , its a 3D action-platformer inspired by Ratchet & Clank/ Jak and Daxter.
I told him about that while he was in the editing stage as I had just found out about it then, haha
"Drake, where's the Tinykin segment?"
Tinykin epic dawg
You didn't even talk about Billie Bust Up! MY FAVORITE GAME AT ALL TIME!!
Skipped about a bit but got my attention.
Convinced me on yellow taxi go vroom yo try it out
Also super kiwi & trying out rascal. & Super sami rolls
I want to mention sulfur nimbus hel's elixer since its quite A favorite of mine ❤️ (free on itch) even if its a bit older. (Please play hard its like expert+ terraria nice changes-ish)

(Less related but i always want to mention sunfluffs {check cohost})
where can i play the demo for lightspeed Lina? i'm also picking up super kiwi 64, and everything else is wishlisted. thanks benjamage!
I don't believe Lightspeed Lina has a demo yet (the footage I used was from the dev, @ Cornf_Blue on Twitter).
@@BenjaMage Ahh alright. i'll keep an eye out for it, and thank you so much for introducing me to rascal!
No Penny's big Breakaway 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Hyper light drifter is on android now let's gooooo
PEAKamage is PEAK.
Honestly surprised that Pseudoregalia wasn't mentioned like at all...
I talked about Pseudoregalia in my Games of 2023 video, and I wanted to largely prioritize games I hadn't talked about yet in video form (with the exception of Super Kiwi 64).
I keep forgeting your canadian like me and alex rochon
*puts on top hat before pulling something out*
_EGG_
20:23 haaaaa
Don’t ask me how much I backed Rollin rascal (200 dollars it was 200 dollars)
Have you played Penny’s Big Breakaway
Yes I was about to say the same thing!!!
LOVE THAT GAME!!!
Real
Great video! A little shameless plug; I am also working on a 3D Platformer called Gillbert: Guardian of the Grotto 😊 Hoping to have an early demo out for the next Next Fest. 🐠
@@mantragames Oh nice! I'll be sure to look more into it. ^^
@@BenjaMage ☺️🙏🏽
Frogun? More like frog bandicoot 4(2020),Am I right? 😂😂
I am expecting at least some funny.
Where da pseudoregalia
NitroRad-core
I don't like when games look and feel like a copy of another game, Pilfer it's borderline a knockoff, even if its done greatly and changes the level design, it's still way to copied from Galaxy.
Like Nikoderiko is a knockoff of Donkey Kong and Crash. And please don't try to justify this as "its an homage to those games", cause it's just an excuse to copy game elements.
Rascal instead reinvented the speedster formula, its from the same creator of Sonic GT (a fan game), but GT plays completly different from official Sonic, that is how you make a tribute without coping.
I know this is about indies but how did you NOT mention Mario, Sonic, crash bandicoot, spyro, sackboy a big adventure or donkeykong 64 those are all amazing!!! This video is a shame, Dislike...
I agree, Sonic 06 is my personal favorite indie 3D platformer, the fact that Benjamage clearly intentionally ignored it is what ended our friendship, smh.
FIRST!!
We do not care
@@Survivorsim :(
I have to point out that the polygonal N64 graphic style got old even quicker than the 8-bit graphics got old for 2-D games a while back.
No penny big breakaway
