Thank you again clint Years back hauling my camper in heavy traffic in Miami Fl my temp went up to almost 200 After that i put the 6 o coller and ever since my trans temp never goes above 150 to 175 Sometimes it stays as low as 125 After 307 000 miles if I have to rebuilt the trans I will consider installing the derale oil pan Thanks for another informative video Keep up the good work

I installed a ford factory rebuilt transmission 17 years ago in my 02 dually and did all of these mods. I pull a #10k trailer daily on a short loop for work and I've never had an issue with temps even when it was 110 degrees here in West Texas. There are no hills out here though so im sure that helps as well.

Good video Clint. The bypass valve has nothing to do with transmission temp. It just a pressure relief valve so you won't blow the cooler out if it gets to much restriction and so if the cooler doesn't flow enough so it won't take out the transmission from lack of lube. That's from Mark who used to work at Ford as an engineer in the transmission department. The engineers at Ford tested the Super Duty at 30 mph because that's when the torque converter locks up. That's the only reason why the small cooler passed the test. Different department test the 5R100 behind the 6.0 powerstroke and that's why that cooler is much bigger.

Just installed the Mishimoto transmission cooler and deleted the bypass line on my 2001 Platinum Edition. Transmission temperature averages about 25-30 degrees cooler.
It's shifting smoother than it has in a long time too.
Thanks Clint for sharing your wisdom with us all. 👍👍

How does it do in the winter ? What are your usual ambient winter weather temps ? I just bypassed my radiator as well because I'm in West Texas and we see +100° often during the summer and I barely work any when it's below freezing at 63 years of age. So far I've seen 160° on a 96 degree day pulling a 10k lb trailer in town. Lots of stop and go. It stays close to 140° if I don't drive aggressively.

I have a 96 7.3. Tow 4-15k lbs (dump trailer) 3x a week. I am over $800 in coolers and pans trying to keep my temps cool at in town speeds (35mph or less)
I’ve tried a 12”x8” transmission oil cooler. mishimoto universal cooler 23x7.5” cooler. B&M pan. Derale pan. 6.0 cooler. Etc. plus all the adapters, hoses, and ATF.
Latest trial is I Installed the Derale Pan & 6.0 cooler. I seen 235°F the other day. At least This time I did NOT have ATF leaking when I topped the hill. .. (Same hill in town I keep having issues on. It’s my way to gauge whether or not the upgrades are working or not)
My temp probe is installed on one of the hard lines though coming out of the transmission. (ISSPRO sending unit that I cannot get to come apart) I’ve been told to relocate the temp sending unit to the test port

I did a trpile disc billet converter, magtec transpan, Mishimoto 36 row trans cooler, and bypass delete. My transmission woes are long gone. Hard to got it to 160, tq converter ulocked pulling 8% grades loaded good and heavy woth the ac full tilt.. makes for a bulllet proof setup.

@ 6:00 - I doubt it was an engineer who said "Yeah, that'll be enough". It was more likely an accountant who said "but if you make it smaller we can save $1.83 on each truck"
@ 7:48 - Do you have a video on suggested mods for people who do tow regularly? I'd be interested in everything from engine mods that bump power, engine mods that increase reliability, cooling mods such as this one, brake mods, etc, etc.
@ 9:23 - I've seen videos from reputable transmission rebuilders that the bypass is designed to maintain fluid flow if the cooler becomes clogged, and it should never be removed. This seems to contradict your thoughts on the bypass. Care to give your opinion on the advice that it should be kept, and why they may be incorrect?
    @ 12:13 - Turbulator? C'mon....

For my 7.3 hotshot trucks, I added a 6.0 cooler. I run the cooling line first though the built-in transmission cooler in the radiator where the water in the bottom of the radiator is much cooler, then it runs through the 6.0 cooler. Never have any issues with them running this way.

@@LemonySnicket-EUCMy trailer weighed 7K empty and I'd typically load up to 8.5K on it. Hauling shipping containers or large tanks was worse due to the air the load catches. Still, I was real happy with the 6.0 cooler.

Thanks for your videos! I upgraded to a 6.0 intercooler, but it's also plumbed into the stock cooler in the radiator. Would you recommend this or just keep it completely separated and tied into the 6.0 cooler only? I'm in California and the transmission will get close to 200 degrees on hot days, I'm wanting to get those temps lower.

My floorboards are hot to touch right at the shifter. I'd definitely say hot rather than warm. I have a ZF6. I was considering adding a finned cooler (aluminum heatsink with NPT tapped ends) in line going to the radiator, but came across plenty of statements on how a ZF6 can't over heat. Am I onto something or just going to end up chasing my tail? I recently rebuilt my ZF6 (for a cracked OD gear) and it felt the same before and after. This is just a calibrated hand gauge, I don't have a thermocouple on this at all.

Hi Clint, What transmission fluid do you recommend for my ZF5. I constantly haul 2500-3500 pounds, and have felt the casing get hot to the touch. Not scalding hot, but hotter than warm. I’m guessing this is why the ZF6 transmission came with a cooler. I’m hesitant to put in any exotic ATF because I’ve been told theres a blind bearing that needs the low viscosity that Marcon lV has which I believe is somewhere around a 20 wt. Mercon is good but I’m sure there is something better for not much more for my severe duty application. Also, what do you use for the transfer case? On the back of the bottle, it says not to use Marcon lV inside the transfer case. Thanks as always.

From 1999-2003 the Ford 7.3L Automatic Transmission (4R100) had an external cooler bypass tube that redirected transmission fluid from the pump output back to the return line of the transmission. The bypassing of the cooler was supposed to happen until the fluid reached operating temps.
