hey bud, would you mind testing the DeckHD at 1/4 resolution? 600p with FSR to scale it back up to 1200p? i wonder if games that are barely playable on a stock deck become way more playable like this. say, something like starfield, cyberpunk, BG3, etc.
Please no one do this upgrade its not worth it your gonna hating yourself when they come out with a oled 800p/720p screen plus the deck isnt meant to be played at high resolutions your gonna eventually wear down your deck twice as fast running ur games at hd
The idea is cool, but this makes it even more apparent why Valve went with the 800p screen. The slight bump in resolution doesn't make up for the loss in performance and battery life, at least in my eyes. As others have said, an 800p OLED screen with a better color range would probably be a lot more appealing.
Yeah kinda a sidegrade when the screen is just marginally better color wise. And the resolution bump just makes things run slower on an already lowish spec system.(but great for a handheld) Edit: Apparently you can run games in either 800p or 1200p on the deckHD screen, but not sure how good 800p would look upscaled.
Yep. I play Dragon's Dogma on steam deck. Overshoot the render resolution to 1080p while still playing in 800p, effectively giving me natural Anti Aliasing from downscaling. It looks beautiful!!
Not mentioned: Make sure that you remove your MicroSD card. Seems like a lot of people get anxious and forget to remove theirs, and manage to snap them in half.
This is pretty cool on concept alone, but I think the 1200p resolution makes it a little too big for its britches. The Deck’s 800p is a justifiable compromise to accommodate its specs and helps with its already short battery life, paying $100 and performing a difficult installation to make those two key aspects worse is a difficult thing to ask. That being said, if they made an alternate screen that nixed the resolution bump in favor of just the color accuracy, anti-glare, improved touchscreen, and maybe added increased screen size (not the resolution) to minimize the bezels, then this would be a very compelling upgrade (maybe they could call it the DeckSD or DeckHD Lite).
FSR comparisons would be nice. Like, FSR ultra performance on the 1200p screen compared to FSR quality on the 800p screen, or whatever combination yields a similar FPS. I think it might be at least theoretically possible for the higher resolution screen to improve visuals without a performance hit.
@@badmoose01 Burn in would be abysmal on handhelds because of all the static screen elements. Not to mention OLED is more power hungry, and also not great in brightly lit environment. Theres definitely a lot of negatives to be had with OLEDs on a handheld but itd be nice to have that option for those who want it.
Steam Deck is out of my price range but as a modder I would have done, battery increase, storage increase, overclock and screen resolution increase for at least watching videos and viewing websites. Cooling mods as well. Ironically I would rarely use it when done. I just enjoy modding things with over the top performance increases.
That and the Extreme Rate Shell with an RGB Back Plate Shell which has a direct fan cutout, Graphene Pad, a 2tb SSD and a 1tb Micro SD will make it the ultimate Deck.
@@pillington1338 Oh wow, i think i saw that but i think it requires a bios mod and the ram is BGA Soldered, it’s not something that you could just do. I wouldn’t mind getting it serviced for a Ram upgrade.
This! heck, just yesterday valve released a new bios on the stable channel, which could undo this whole thing :( I bet DeckHD keeps updating the bios for at least a while, but who knows how long that will happen. Also, this mod shouldn't be taken lightly, in the deck reddit, we're seeing people crack screens, strip screws, even a guy who probably bricked his motherboard doing screen replacement due to an issue with the cable. This is not a simple operation, and I would only recommend it if you have to replace the screen anyway and you are out of warranty, because valve isn't going to fix a mess up on this operation for free. So I guess, TLDR: Proceed with maximum caution.
800p is one of the reasons i love the deck so much, and I really hope valve can commission a custom 800p panel for Deck 2.0. Afaik no OLED, VRR, or high refresh panels exist at 800p. Though, high res would be sick for a deck dedicated to emulation w/ shaders.
40% increase in resolution for a ~20% drop in performance, sign me up! I keep my steamdeck on an external battery and remote play anyway so this mod makes a ton of sense for those who stream games from their desktop. Plus the stock steamdeck (I got the upgraded LCD) has a ton of light bleed, I'd recommend getting a new front shell for the install as well.
This is pretty cool, because the screen is a weakpoint on Deck, but going above 800p is a mistake IMO and is going to have some negative performance and clarity impacts when running at lower res than 1200p.
@@technocolossus Right, I think 800p is really good at this play distance. If the performance overhead were there I definitely wouldn't complain about going to 1200p. Maybe with all the res scaling stuff like XeSS and FSR it could make 1200 more viable somewhat
Having 1200p is definitely nice. I use the ROG Ally, and when I can take advantage of it's 1080p 120Hz, it's incredible. Especially since even when it's not capped at that, it has VRR. But, if playing a more intensive game, 720p at 60 looks fine with FSR forced on in the Ally's settings. It's always nice to have options. I could imagine 1200p in indie games would be freaking awesome.
Higher color support, better HDR support, and slimmed bezels (or just going oled) would make it an instant buy for me. The price is perfectly fair for what it is, but the self installation requirement makes it a lot harder to justify the upgrade. At this point the upgrade is just "tempting"
I bought a Steam Deck this year and pretty happy with it, but to be honest I don't think that the DeckHD is a upgrade that's need. 720/800p for a handheld is for me enough for a 7" screen, so upgrade it with a 1200p screen who make game run "worst" and possibly dry the battery faster is not what I want. BUT, the DeckHD show how possible it is to change part with the Steam Deck, so why not we can have in the future a OLED panel or/and a bordeless screen for it. That can be great.
They should have sticked with the same resolution but an OLED screen like Nintendo did with the last Switch model. This mod is useless, the Deck can't keep up with modern 3D games, 2D pixel games don't really care about more resolution as long as you can provide correct aspect ratio for pixels. We already had near 2k resolutions on CRTs like 20 years ago and it was mostly nonsensical because desktops didn't scale well on older OSes and PCs couldn't keep up with games at that resolution, why the fuck you want more resolution if your hardware can't keep up with the requirements.
@pandurlolgg5780 From what I can see everywhere it's pretty decent. And remember we are talking about a standard screen replacement, $100 for a 1200p screen that size isn't really that cheap so ofc you're getting some decent quality

Great video as always, Nacho. I find this mod intriguing, and love how easy the installation is. I especially love that they include all the necessary tools in the box to perform the mod yourself. That said, I don't think this is something I'd want to do with my own Steam Deck. The decreased performance, coupled with reduced battery life are not worth the better color and sharper visuals, imo. I'm definitely one of those guys who feels form should follow function, and the tradeoff does not seem worth it to me. I'm also weary of them dropping BIOS support down the line before getting around to open-sourcing it. That said if someone has a damaged/broken screen and needs a replacement, or they bought the lower-end model Deck that doesn't have the anti-glare, this might be a good option for them.
Have you tried SteamOS built-in FSR for scaling the resolution up to the 1200p? Is it possible to set the resolution to 1200p in SteamOS for the game, then lower the in game resolution to 800p or less, then turn on the performance option of FRS so that it is outputting a 1200p resolution with an internal resolution that allows the game to play closer to stock deck performance? Does it look the same, slightly better or slightly worse?
imo having this screen and the resolution as a choice is a nice bonus specially if you get the steam deck just to mod it and play old games , you can just switch between the resolutions when needed
Great Video! I was surprised it wasn’t more difficult to replace the screen. I can see a future where an OLED screen replacement for the deck is featured on this channel :)
I'm a 1:48 into the video, and I can already see this is a BAAAD Idea. Back in the early 2010s, I was rather opposed to getting a laptop with a 1080p screen because it takes a lot more hardware power to light up all those extra pixels. Same is going to apply to the Deck here.
Lots of games run fine on the Steam Deck at 1080p or even higher. Just have to look to lower spec games like JRPGs, fighting games, and previous gen games.
Double check your color temps on your display settings. If you're on the Main Branch, you're likely now on 3.5 or 3.6 which has a different default color temps. The human eye is a bit handwavy metaphorically speaking, and can pass something off as the norm. Adjusting it should fix that.
This looks a nice upgrade; I have seen other videos on it and read a lot about it. The color enhancement might be worth it BUT, running it at 1200P or 1080p, the hit on battery and PERFORMANCE is kind of huge. I grabbed the SteamDeck for portable PC gaming (and a really awesome emulation device). Overall, if I broke my display, No question I would do the mod. What I wish.... a 800p/1080p OLED display that is 7.5" (OLED panels are thin, you could expand it a little). Now I would have paid double for an OLED display.... On the SteamDeck, I am very little interested in a higher resolution, just because it IS a 7" display, NOT a 50" or higher, so doing this, is not as important to me. I want to be able to enjoy the games and not deal with sluggish performance because of higher res screen. The Deck is a few years old now, so it's days of running all AAA games are going to be over soon, so putting less performance is not something I think anyone should do...
I was going to do this mod when I did the full shell replacement on my Deck but the possible issues with future steam os updates is a deal breaker for me. I don't want to deal with having to mess with bios updates every time Valve does a system update.
one of the few upgrades I think is kinda pointless Nacho, only because the Deck struggles to hit 60 in 720p in a lot of titles. 1200p is only gonna cut that framerate even more but cool video nonetheless.
One thing I hadn't considered, and didn't see mentioned in the video: If the Deck itself is built to run off of 800p with its hardware, what sort of performance might you see if you set the internal resolution for the games to 800p, but then used the built-in FSR to upscale it to 1080p? Would you still have a better-looking result for similar performance?
might consider this as my next year self birthday gift, along with doing the RAM upgrade mod, and WiFi/Bluetooth upgrade mod (and throw some PTM 7950 for good measure)
I feel you glossed over the main use case for this screen upgrade here: older/indie titles. Some games are incompatible with the deck due to the sub 1080p screen resolution. Plus a lot of indie tiles (stardew valley springs to mind) would gain vast improvements with no performance loss. I'm keeping an eye on ebay now for a cheap (possibly damaged) second deck for use with this screen for low-end titles :)
I wish there was a screen with better color accuracy, maybe even OLED, but with the same 800p resolution. 1200p just kills battery faster, even if you lower the resolution, because all those pixels stay in use. On top of the performance issues that you mentioned.
As always, very well structured modding video. Personally that would be interesting as an option to replace a faulty screen, not to change a functional default screen. That said, since you costumize each game's resolution, you can keep 720p for games that would struggle to keep FPS at what you want them. BIOS tweakings to make the screen work is rough on the nerves though. Hoping Valve can do something to increase ease of repair.
Tito has become a master craft machine modder. He has gone from simple gameboy circuitry all the way to steam deck an absolute modern marvel of a handheld.
I'm resisting the urge to use this screen as an excuse to shell swap my steam deck to an atomic purple shell because I'd still have to mess with the touchpads to make them clear too.....
How is this worth it - bad performance - worse battery - risk of breaking your steam deck - costs 100 bucks - BIOS modification All for a bit sharper image and color correction (which can be done with plugin) or natively on steam os 3.5 Great coverage of the product tho, good video and thank you
I love my SD but I will stick with the stock screen - I would rather have a bit more performance and battery life. Could definitely see the attraction of this mod though, especially from people who game mostly at home.
Glad to see you do this! I had my Steam Deck for a year since launch and I just couldn't get over the quality of the screen, it was just so bad (in my opinion of course) as far as colors and contrast go. Even with plugins to adjust saturation, it just wasn't good AT ALL. I ended up hesitantly buying one of the many Chinese made handhelds (Ayaneo 2) and I haven't looked back since. I would be willing to switch back over to the Steam Deck if it had a much better screen, but at this point I'm so happy with my Ayaneo 2 that I'll just for the Deck 2 to come out and hope it comes with an OLED or Micro-LED screen.
FF7R uses dynamic resolution scaling by default. Even with 30 FPS cap and plenty of overhead, it never quite hits native. So its a big difference picking 720p vs 1080p because it will generally be underneath both.
Hi. Great video! Have you ran any benchmark on moded Steam Deck in 800p and compared to stock results? That would give an indication if the results are impacted by alternative software (bios?), on top of higher resolution. Thanks.
amazing vid as usual! just one note now that you settled on the warm (red/orange) tones i think its time for a new intro, the rotating consoles are great but the quality and look does not fit well anymore with the rest of the vid
Im completely fine with the default screen of the steamdeck. 1200p just compromises the performance of the device not to mention more battery drain due to pushing more pixels.
Nice comparison! Thanks for sharing. Have you tried testing rendering at 800p and upscaling to 1200p using FSR? I think that's where this might make the most sense since you could enjoy the extra resolution "for free" in terms of performance. Still that BIOS update requirement is quite a bummer, I wouldn't trade updating Steam OS for the new display.
I hope someone comes out with a screen mod that uses an OLED with smaller bezels even at the same res i think it would be a much more noticeable change than a bump in resolution
That's why although I was interested in this screen mod. I never actually thought about doing it because I know the steam deck is specifically engineered for that resolution for a reason. it's not the biggest powerhouse.
Makes more sense to wait for a handheld with specs that has a better screen and the specs to use it. I'm definitely watching the new Lenovo and waiting for whatever the next big one will be, I've had my deck a year now and can get back at least another without issue I'm sure
By the looks of things.. you dont even need to open it? It seems if you replaced the screen and plugged in the new one from the front it would save more time? What do you think?

Thanks macho nacho looks like an awesome thing to try
Double check your color temps on your display settings. If you're on the Main Branch, you're likely now on 3.5 or 3.6 which has a different default color temps. The human eye is a bit handwavy metaphorically speaking, and can pass something off as the norm. Adjusting it should fix that.
Great video as always! 👍
I think a 800p OLED display would make the handheld so much better than a 1200p screen
I use my Nreal oled glasses with steam deck , no modding required and a much better experience :)
I really don't see the point in this mod, 800p is more than enough for a screen of this size. What was more needed was either up to 90hz, or OLED.
*1080p
i think the extra cable is maybe encase u tear the old one getting it out i kno it happends wen ur not used to doin it
It's happening !!!
Awesome you are branching out Tito!! I still want you to do some Colecovision mods! 🙂
if you play older games , then this definitely makes sense but if your playing newer games then 1200p just isnt worth the performance hit
Aaaannnnddd now there is a new Deck with OLED.
One thing I hadn't considered, and didn't see mentioned in the video:
If the Deck itself is built to run off of 800p with its hardware, what sort of performance might you see if you set the internal resolution for the games to 800p, but then used the built-in FSR to upscale it to 1080p? Would you still have a better-looking result for similar performance?
Isn't this similar to super resolution mode where you can make1080 appear as 1440p or 4k?
might consider this as my next year self birthday gift, along with doing the RAM upgrade mod, and WiFi/Bluetooth upgrade mod (and throw some PTM 7950 for good measure)
There's a typo @16:27. It says Cyberpunk 2077 instead of Tomb Raider
Loved the video
I feel you glossed over the main use case for this screen upgrade here: older/indie titles.
Some games are incompatible with the deck due to the sub 1080p screen resolution. Plus a lot of indie tiles (stardew valley springs to mind) would gain vast improvements with no performance loss.
I'm keeping an eye on ebay now for a cheap (possibly damaged) second deck for use with this screen for low-end titles :)
A game where a single pixel is as big as a finger nail, I am sure the high resolution will make all the difference XD
I wish there was a screen with better color accuracy, maybe even OLED, but with the same 800p resolution. 1200p just kills battery faster, even if you lower the resolution, because all those pixels stay in use. On top of the performance issues that you mentioned.
You mentioned an Ashida build in a previous video… why must you make me wait???
The benchmarks from the stock deck are invalid since you’ve got the FPS locked. Meaning the impact is much higher
I'd honestly prefer a much more accurate 800p screen mod.
I'm curious if a mod like this can be applied to the Switch, but then again, it'd likely take a hit on performance and battery.
Great tutorial, ty
How is this worth it
- bad performance
- worse battery
- risk of breaking your steam deck
- costs 100 bucks
- BIOS modification
All for a bit sharper image and color correction (which can be done with plugin) or natively on steam os 3.5
Great coverage of the product tho, good video and thank you
No It cannot be done with a plug in.. but ya it's not worth it.
I'd be interested to see the differences between the stock steamdeck on steamos 3.5 vs deckHD. Apparently sRGB was one of the big changes.
Maybe overclock should help with the frame drops?
True, but would likely impact battery life.
@@MachoNachoProductions so, it’s time for battery mod now!
1200p just compromises the performance of the device not to mention more battery drain due to pushing more pixels.
can i use a heat gun?
Nice comparison! Thanks for sharing. Have you tried testing rendering at 800p and upscaling to 1200p using FSR? I think that's where this might make the most sense since you could enjoy the extra resolution "for free" in terms of performance. Still that BIOS update requirement is quite a bummer, I wouldn't trade updating Steam OS for the new display.
You don't have to - just run the script every time you update - simple
I wonder how this would do side by side with the OLED steam deck coming out this week 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I hope someone comes out with a screen mod that uses an OLED with smaller bezels even at the same res i think it would be a much more noticeable change than a bump in resolution
Did you run the benchmarks with uncapped FPS (and no vsync)?
SotTR specifically. If it was capped it might show worse performance moving to DeckHD.
Unfortunately on a screen that's only seven inches, frames per second means so much more than resolution
Just found your channel today and no joke I was just thinking if you can change out the screen. The read my mind google powers be strong.
So FSR doesn't work with this mod? You can't run the the game at 720P and upscale to 1080P?
I'm wondering is the 32gb memory mod would help with some of these benchmarks with the DeckHD
Me: This is going to be boring. There's nothing to the install...
Video: Hold my beer...
joking aside, i hope that if the SteamDeck gets a hardware revision they make front part mods like buttons or trackpads easier to access
I'd rather install a screen with 800p and srgb with antiglare, worse performance is a dealbreaker
i'm pretty sure steam deck should have phase change thermal pads instead of normal thermal paste
By the looks of things.. you dont even need to open it? It seems if you replaced the screen and plugged in the new one from the front it would save more time? What do you think?
ive just installed this and its like a 1440p or 4k screen
when oledscreen for first steamdeck sir ?
720/800p or 900p with built in steam fsr is thr sweet spot. I have the screen and every game looks better because of it
