good thing is that even if you break something accidentaly during the transfer process you can just buy a new part and replace it yourself since valve has made it so repairable unlike some other companies.
Ifixit saved my swap! The tiny tiny screws behind the screen were almost stripped by the extremerate screw driver but the higher quality ifixit one got it out no problem!
Pro tip: IPA is best for removing adhesive in general, not just for tech repair reasons. Like, when you have sticker residue on something in your house, or just about any situation where you have adhesive on something you want clean. Just dab some on and wait a minute or two. Then scrape it off with ease! Side Pro tip, adhesive likes to be removed by itself. Meaning, use the adhesive you removed to get the remaining adhesive off. It sticks to itself.
I was skeptical of that purple case a lot of people have been using but you know I think your version with the black buttons and pads actually looks great.
Good vid. Appreciate you atleast showing it came with the touch pads. I wasn’t sure if any of these kits did or not. I’m still not sure if I want to go through all this but this will be very helpful if I decide to take the leap.
I just wanna point out for all you budget moders out there. Thats actually a Bass pic he's using to replace the screen. You can still get them at your local music store they are just a but more ridged and thicker/larger.
Thx for sharing the video. You installed the thicker adhesive strips on the wrong side though. 16:53 Should go onto the left hand side and the thinner strips on the right.
I went the jsaux shell route… I am very happy with the result. The tear down was fairly easy except for the dang screen. I got 98% of the adhesive removed. The last tiny bit managed to be so resilient to heating that I ended up cracking the original screen. So my one day swap ended up taking two (thank goodness for overnight shipping from Amazon and jsaux’s screen replacement) once it was all back together…. It looks amazing.
Thanks for the video. What worries me is not opening the steam deck and removing all the stuffs, but is damage the screen... But I think I'm going to finally give a try on changing the shell of my deck. I want to buy the pink one and combine with the black buttons of the og shell
I successfully did this shell swap 3 days ago. Even the same color. Before this I'd done a shell swap on my PSP-2000 which is cake work by comparison, and a motherboard replacement on my PS-Vita. Removing the screen on the deck was nerve racking as I'd never removed a glued in screen before.
19:00 that reaction pushes me to edge - I will actually go through with the operation! Bought a new SSD and new joysticks too. Buuuut. I have the Jsaux shell. I wonder if eXtremerates face buttons work on it as they look amazing.
Please use the included case to lay the Steam Deck flat and with clearance for the joysticks so they are not squashed on the table like in this video :)
I just did the seap yesterday. No idra what i was getting into but managed it successfully. Only thing that broke is the vibration on my trackpad. Thosee tiny plugs both slid out of the connectors for me and wouldnt go back in
Just did this on my OLED deck, and there's no way I would've done it on this LCD one. The OLED has a mid frame the battery, heatsink, etc attaches to, making the swap a lot easier despite thinking the OLED swap is far from easy.
Thanks for this video! Although slightly different than the JSAUX shell that I got, using this in tandem with their tutorial was VERY helpful for seeing things from a different angle, clearer shot, or some of your additional tips. So happy with how it turned out for the N64 nostalgia! Side note: I love your boot sequence and home screen themes. Are they available for download anywhere? 🤞🤞
I've been thinking of trying a shell swap since i bought it, and tbh, it doesnt seem that hard, just time consuming and you have to be very patient but i wont describe it as hard, might try it
This looks incredible! Side question: I see you have Xbox game pass on the Linux SteamOS. Do a lot of the game pass games work on steamOS and are easy to set up?
I recently tried this with my deck and cant seem to get the LCD to turn back on. Im getting sounds and feedback so I can tell its on, as well as the backlight from the LCD, but nothing on the display. Did I break my screen boys??
i spent $60 on a nitro deck from limited run. Plays just fine on COD ghosts with Mayflash Magic S controller adapter. works in wired mode. I do hate the out of box ergonomics but after turning OFF the ZL & L... and flipping ZR & R it gives a hand position that allows placing finger-tip, ...well, thumb-tip on the right and left Sticks. and there I can really feel the accurate hall effect thumb sticks take effect. it's fast accurate but does leave my palm hovering far away. a grip for this position is so worth the buy when one comes along. ideally i'd like some support from crkd provide a sale on grips whether they screw in or what just offer it. your customers demand customer care. especially with the no return policy. we so close to it being so comfortable for hours on end. come-on.
the gamecube style ribbed-rounded sticks came with the atomic purple. the regular caved in sticks come with the black regular nitro deck. atomic purple comes with extras that closely resemble wii u sticks IMO not rounded enough however the gamecube style ARE.
Good video) Not long ago I did a full shell replacement on my Nintendo Switch V1...and what can I say, judging by this video, the Steam Deck shell replacement is easier 😅 Switch has more nuances... P.S. And yes, I also have a shell from Extremerate)))
I know this is a swap, but my steam deck fell in the case about 6 inches. And now the L button is alittle jam, only presses when i press hard. Is it hard to replace? Etc i saw online people soltering it. I cant do that lol
Hey @DammitJeff I completed the mod today on a brand new device that I had never powered on before and did a shell swap right out of the box. After completing everything I powered it on and it booted like normal no display issues. But the device wont connect to wifi... I shows all near by access points and I verified the passwords 1000 times, restarted the router, did all the obvious troubleshooting and even tried other networks as well along with a mobile hotspot. Still nother... In regards to the shell swap, everything was fairly easy and I didn't run into any snags nor with the screen which was rather easy just took patience. I made sure to take my time and be delicate with everything as I have some years with various electronics under my belt so I'm 99.9% sure it wasn't a user issue during the swap. Any help would be appreciated! I can't get passed the "Connect to Wifi" in the setup.
Not me doing this as my first shell swap 😭 it was so scary but I repaired my right trigger and did the shell swap to the gorgeous pink from extreme rate. I painted the button indents gold too, as well as the indent lines on the sides. It looks lovely. 🩷
So in the settings on the steam deck you can actually switch the layout to the Nintendo button layout! Idk if that’s what you meant but there is a setting actually to switch the layout to said Nintendo layout!
I wish Valve would just partner up with Extremerate and sell transparent Steam Decks like how Nintendo sold the N64 Funtastic series. They'd make a boat load of $$$.
Would you say that leaving those 6 screws at the front affect the deck if left out? It seems like it would be nice not to have to take off the screen if you wanted to swap out screens. For example if ppl got that deck HD and set it on another shell:) it would be a matter of taking off the 4 screws on the back of the frame:)
You could probably leave those screws out because the inner RF shield / frame is connected to the shell at other points but based on the shell swaps I've done, it doesn't make screen replacement easier.
@@helmutlvx what I’m trying to do is possibly get the DECK HD screen and install it on a different shell. And then if I want to go back to the stock shell I can leave the stock screen on the OG shell:) not sure if that makes sense but thanks for the info!
@@lvgs7348 that might work, actually but you'll still have to remove the original screen to finish disassembly because those six screws stop you from removing the internals. but after that you can reinstall the original screen with just the adhesive
I bought a shell for my launch Deck months ago. Removed the rear cover, saw all the screws, ribbon cables, and modular components, and said F that. I'm perfectly capable in skill level, I just don't want to deal with it.
I've done extremeRate's joycon mods a couple of times. And although I definitely can do it, it's never not stressful. Now this is definitely significantly harder. So I think I'll pass :)
Shame you didn't look at the solid colour shells. A LOT of people have covered the transparent ones and it would've been nice to see someone properly go over say, the white one. That said, still a really good insightful video nonetheless
I bought the matcha green extreme rate case. I think its really good, had it for a few months and it feels and looks great. That being said im pretty sure all the solid colored ones are painted so thats something to think about, ive never had it chip or wear down but ive heard people say they discolor
fyi yall, the steam deck being just a pc means you can use basically whatever usb c charger you want as long as its at least 45watts, no worry if the offical charger gets ruined.
This was pretty easy until I cracked my screen lol I was doing so good too and then I heard a cracking noise and I was like oh no I haven’t put it together yet but I’m sure it’s not gonna turn on
All right, update put everything back together. Turns out that I did indeed break the screen. Also right joystick doesn’t work and the two bottom button aren’t responding.😅 I have a fancy paperweight sitting on my shelf time to take it all apart and figure out what I did wrong. Also, at this very moment all the screen replacements for the steam deck are not in stock.
While removing the ribbon cables, I accidentally shattered the connector cap of one of them and removed the connector cap of another. And then I scratched the board trying to remove the rest. I might have to replace the right button board because of my failure.
They really should make these things easier to disassemble, even if it's just for cleaning... OR they should offer these in other colors and not just black...
Subscribe or else Heaty Gun-zález loses his job :(

PlayStation sounds??
I need to get myself a Heaty Gun-zález!
Just re-shelled mine using your tutorial. Thank you so much! You're informative, as well as hilarious.
I would love to see a video just about steam deck software mods because that rabbit hole is massive
Good luck fitting all that in a single video.

as someone who has recently acquired a steam deck, this video is truly nail-biting

Great video, thanks for sharing your experience.
I'm pretty sure, I won't change my shell after watching your video now 😂
11:07 thats a sharp implement warning 😂😂
I did this using the JSAUX shell with the vented backplate, and I'm in love!
It'd be so cool to see you overclock it 👀
*My SteamDeck looking at me concerningly*
*DON'T*

Liking the video just for the bomb rush Cyberfunk call out
Did you re-apply the thermal paste off camera?
I did this exact thing but for my little brothers switch…. Thanks for the video I will not be doing this to my SD but I’m glad it can be done. 😅
I'll be saving this video for later for if/when I get a steam deck and if I'm ever brave enough to do this. 😅
i know im late BUT, @ 1:00 i think that menu sound is from splinter cell conviction

you put the link for your toolkit as the same one for the steam deck shell accidentally! i was really looking forward to checking that toolkit
looks sick but that process looks like a nightmare lol, if anything i might pay someone to do it
Hey bro Just been watching your content. Love the quality and all that keep it up bro. Lets hope you get to a million(:
The part were jeff cuts himself
I felt that
Sick video as always, Jeff! Gotta get together and game again soon!
Tip for anyone about to do this. Be very careful near button that the bumper clicks. I barely bumped it and broke the solder
"You live to be taken apart another day!" love the energy
Do you think the Rog Ally will get a full shell replacement?
how does the plastic feel in comparison to the original;
I've been thinking of trying a shell swap since i bought it, and tbh, it doesnt seem that hard, just time consuming and you have to be very patient but i wont describe it as hard, might try it
Awesome video! but I need the name of that custom boot up and theme!
how did u get so many games?
i just got my steam deck oled?
how did u get x box ps5 on it?
the purple look so good..
Sorry for the small gripe here, the Ugreen charger is smaller than the SteamDeck charger from one side but it's also wider, so is it really smaller?
Is goo gone safe to use to take off the adhesive?
When is the DammitJeff ASMR channel launching?
jooo that video was so goood thx for the advice
YAY! Atomic Purple lol
This looks incredible!
Side question: I see you have Xbox game pass on the Linux SteamOS. Do a lot of the game pass games work on steamOS and are easy to set up?
I prefer the switch lookalike case but the clear purple goes hard too

Where do you press R2? my steam deck when I test the buttons it appears that R2 is being flattened when it is not

Out of curiosity, are the abxy swappable to the Nintendo layout? I assume not due to the tabs.
So in the settings on the steam deck you can actually switch the layout to the Nintendo button layout! Idk if that’s what you meant but there is a setting actually to switch the layout to said Nintendo layout!
@@Gnarkkotik I was talking about the physical buttons, but thank you :D .

Can you do the shell swap on Oled?
