i feel you are hitting the nail on the point, to add to it the SoF had crew that were fighting a LOOSING WAR so their resolve and determination is surpasing anything of what the infinty may have of a crew that is understandably confident after they "won" the war. not to metnion the infinity was THE palce where basically all spartan IV were stationed, no wonder they would have been overconfident to their demise adding their false hope, although spartan IVs are no joke they are the weakest spartans in experience terms, with the most "mayor conflict" being the requiem ops and even then they were mostly there as security detail and not in a real "war", most spartan 4s would be quite fresh for what the crew expects of the miracles a spartan is merchandised to perform and having essentialy a full ship of them must have really inflated their ego, and thus overconfidense
Ironic isn't it? Humanity's oldest ship survived and continues to fight for a long time while Humanity's greatest technologically advanced ship lasted in less than a decade and was destroyed in two minutes by the Banished
I love how this old ship has a proud history that spearheaded the colonization of the stars, Brought to defend mankind and now may be the last hope against the Banished. Compared to the hyped uped infinity this spirit of fire has humble beginnings and now legendary service.
I think the UNSC Infinity suffers from feature creep. They tried to build a ship, that can do everything. The Spirit of Fire is a logistics ship and since war is won with logistics., she is very effective.

The Spirit of Fire, is the best example that more than the design of the ship, what makes it invincible is its veteran crew and its experienced captain. Had the UNSC Infinity been run by James Cutter and his crew, we all know that it would have lasted much longer than it ultimately would.
Fun fact: You can actually create child soldiers or breed inside the Spirit Of Fire and during the time of that 20 years in the space travel it is quite literally possible to procreate and increase the menpower by breeding inside the ship and then training them into soldiers or engineers etc 💀

I adore this ship so much. Honestly I think it's my favorite ship in all Halo lore haha Halo Wars in general gives mad Battlestar Galactica vibes and the Spirit of Fire is just the ultimate expression of that. A microcosm of humanity's struggles while being immensely awesome in general! I do have a soft spot for carriers in sci-fi though, so I suppose it makes sense why the Infinity and Spirit of Fire tend to be my favs along with the epoch and punic class carriers
I haven't kept up with the Spirit of Fire's lore and I want to know, has the Spirit been recovered by the UNSC? I really want them to give the Spirit a 2nd refit that makes her even more badass. I'm thinking the 2nd refit would be a near-complete overhaul that would include the addition of shields, upgrades to her armament, and improved automation. If that won't happen, I want 343 to make a Spirit of Fire 2 much like there was a Pillar of Autumn 2. This new ship could be a modernized version of the Spirit that standardizes the upgrades both Serina and Isabel made to the original. These two ideas would be a great way to reboot the Halo Wars series. If the Spirit was either refitted or replaced, I can see them using that as reasoning to make a new Halo Wars.
The Spirit hasn't been recovered just yet, the last we've seen them they were still fighting the Banished and the last covenant remnant, the ones left over inside the keyship on the ark That said, I am drunk as I write this, so idk nothin
Last we see the Spirit is still at the Ark though Infinite's cut ending heavily hints that the Spirit of Fire arrived to assist Chief. The engines sounded exactly like the Spirit's and Fernando was very shocked.
"This better have some of Spirit of Fire from HW1s opening in this." Literally the first thing I hear; Spirit of Fire's piano chords. OH THIS IS GONNA GET GOOD. Addit; UNSC cryopods work on most Earth-biology equivilent mammals. We've seen dogs be put in them before with no issues. Presumably, this is an intentional flexibility to allow colony ships to bring whole farms worth of livestock with them to their new homes so the colonists wouldnt have to live off MRE equivilents or processed food for ages while they got their own inferstructure built. Most likely Spock was stuck in Cutters pod with him.

@readJohn316itsnotlong Your "religion" is a farce. An idea assembled from shattered remnants left in humanities genetic memory from our time as equals to the Forerunners, left behind after our forced devolution after our defeat in the Forerunner-Human War and our near extinction during the Flood invasion. Memories of greater people sunk into our genes by the Librarian in hope that we would reclaim what was ours, and retake our place among the stars. It is a sad offshoot of our rightful title of Reclaimers, nothing more. It served humanity not during the Covenant War. While you prayed for salvation from a non existent power, true safety came in the form of the monsters we made with our own hands. The xenos butchered all without thought or care. God did not save humanity, the Spartans did. I need no verses other than John 1:17 "I need a weapon."
The spirit of fire is the true old girl of the UNSC where other ships in her class fall in combat, she kept on trucking on taking on covenant ships and even a banish super carrier in her later years. She a tuff old girl that wont give up so easy in the face of danger thanks to her crew of the best of the best in the UNSC.
One thing I always wonder about is how the Spirit of Fire has enough men to continue fighting effectively for so long without reinforcement. It states there is approx 9000 combat troops. If that is during harvest and the SoF lost half their compliment, there would only be 4500 combat troops to fight the entire Second Ark Conflict without being able to replace a lost soldier. So the SoF must have the best military people in the entire UNSC to fight an entire conflict on the Ark with probaly around 5k troops.

Remember a wise old quote, “In my book, Experience outranks everything.” The Spirit of Fire was able to survive so long due to a rather effective Captain, some AI assistance, and a dedicate force of Marine, Aerial, and most importantly, Spartan II forces. That last one seals the fate of most armies. But also include the massive amount of supplies and manufacturing capacity that allow it to push out it’s own machines of war and arms.

the fact she is an ex colony ship makes sense for the games too, its perfect for the basebuilder type thing. she carries loads of those templates, re-fitted for military use and using the same ships they used to go to the surface and physically build colonies...

Ah yes, the ship that went head to head with a sinaris and wasn't immediately vaped, honestly the spirit of fire is probably more effective then a squadron of stridents. Mainly because they have such a Chad as cutter commanding it. Also, does anyone else feel like the punic class is slightly redundant in the usnc navy? You'd think some fo tjos eligh carriers would be more economical for a post war unsc.
Honestly if you think about it, especially with how in Halo CE the covenant didn't immediately vaporize the PoA, I think there's a good chance they survived simply because they were in the forerunner shield world and thus opted to board it like they did the Autumn rather than risk damaging a forerunner world with their weapons. Except they completely lost that boarding attempt this time around. Also because maybe their shields were down, the Spirit didn't know the ship was there and I doubt the covenant ship knew they were coming out there either.
I'm convinced that if the Spirit of Fire was given shields like the Infinity, that ship would be near unstoppable and x100 more useful than Infinity ever was, better ship, better tactics, better crew, and a MUCH better Captain.

They were "UNSC ships" because the spacer crews were military, even if the ships themselves had no overt military applications. Once the colonies were started, apprentice spacers could take over if the ship wasn't scrapped, and the UNSC crews reassigned to other ships, keeping their skills in constant practice.
10:40 Funfact: The bridge originaly was at the bottom of the ship in the first Halo Wars (above the observation deck) until they change the location to the ship's top just above the MAC cannons in Halo Wars 2.
The Spirit of Fire and her crew are the remnants of Humanity's fighting fire in the beginning of the Human-Covenant War. Where as post war humanity greatly relied on new advanced technology and enjoyed its new superiority over the covenant but not against newer more deadlier threats.
I am always surprised on how many battle scars she has. I see her as a destroyer but also an aircraft carrier. I think her beauty comes from how tough she is
I personally enjoy both ships equally. Infinity represents the pinnacle of human ingenuity, combining Human, Covenant, and Forerunner tech seamlessly to create the most powerful vessel in existence since the Forerunners themselves. (yes I think it could go toe-to-toe with the much bigger CSO. Fight me.) The Infinity fought Covenant remnants on multiple occasions, took a direct hit from a glassing beam and survived, rammed through an RCS-class Cruiser without any sign of shield failure, and punched a hole through one of the Forerunner's most powerful warships (something the rest of the Home Fleet failed to do). On the other hand you have the Spirit of Fire. A ship originally designed for civilian use, requisitioned and repurposed by the UNSC, which then subsequently went on to have an extremely distinguished career, sacrificed its Slipspace drive to stop the Covenant from gaining a game-changing weapon, and then went on to single handedly defeat an entire Banished force that far outclassed them. Both ships have impressive feats and considering the Infinity has crash-landed before and based off concept art, I'm going to assume it's critically damaged somewhere on Zeta Halo, using its remaining Huragok and any Sentinels that may assist the Reclaimers to repair their Flagship. If the SoF shows up at Zeta Halo (God I hope she does) she could assist in administering repairs using her War Forges. If Infinity is confirmed as destroyed, they should give us the damn Eternity. They did Infinity real dirty in Infinite's opening cutscene.
Easily the best captain and crew from both the Covenant and Banished wars. Keep in mind that everything they've done throughout their operational history had to be with very minimal casualties and only scavenged and scrapped materials since they've been cut off for so long. Every person onboard is a legend, and Cutter is easily the most efficient ship Captain in the post-Forerunner era Halo universe aside from Thel and arguably Keyes.
Yeaaahh.... the Infinity never actually acomplished anything, did it? I mean, it shot the Mantles Approach, making a tiny hole that did... nothing. Otherwise... it was just there, and got the crap kicked out of it. I like to describe it as an oversized Cargo Freighter with guns strapped on.
While the infinity didn't so a whole lot, I doubt any other ship could have punched that hole. Keep in mind the Mantle's approach is probably the most powerful ship ever to exist in the Halo universe, with the best armor period. I definitely agree that it was super underused and ineffective compared to the Spirit, though.
@@gammacompanymark The Mantle's Approach doesn't have particularly good armor though? The only real part of the ship that stood out for the Forerunners was the fact that it had more guns than any other ship it's size. It is entirely made out of programmable matter, fragile, but quickly and easily repaired as such to make it ideal for a near fully automated ship like the Mantle's Approach. It wasn't even particularly big for a ship of it's class, even if the pattern is technically unique, with the Didact having gone directly to the Master Builder to have the ship fabricated.
@@selenaautufuga7597 Its "fragile" compared to other forerunner ships. That is to say not fragile in the slightest, when compared to anything the UNSC has ever build.

The spirit of fire has always been one of my most favorite ships in all of halo, she has such a rich history aswell as the badass history of being that old reliable that just won’t stop kicking, “hero ship” is really a truly accurate title especially from the time of the covenant war where even the UNSCs best and biggest could be taken down in a matter of minutes
I’m waiting for the day that the UNSC is all but defeated and then the Spirit of Fire flies in, back from the dead, to save the day. It’s probably a pipe dream but still, it’d be really cool
I absolutely loved this video. It’s only visible in Halo Wars, but the Spirit of Fire also has its own newspaper called “The Spirit.” Refer to the introductory cutscene of Halo Wars for its appearance. I really hope this ship is given the respect it deserves by 343.
First off: magnificent intro, always loved that intro cutscene with the HW take on the Halo theme. That being said, while the Spirit isn't my favorite ship design wise, she does have a striking name, history, crew, and features. The 11A2R1 deck guns are impractical in design, due to the low elevation of the mountings, yet I find them so cool. Also, it's my belief that the MAC blasts featured in Halo Wars is derived from these secondary weapons and not the primary spinal MAC battery. Wouldn't mind seeing a refit under Isabel's guidance to install the shielding system from the "Autumn" class, modern missile pods, point defense network, and Mark 40 Naval coilgun batteries to replace the outdated deck guns. Imagine such a refit debuting in an Infinite dlc... Should the Spirit finally succumb to battle, I feel as though her spiritual successor should be a "Epoch" class due to the design similarities.
Bro plz do more of these!!! I found you randomly and I'm so glad I did. Loved this video and how indepth it is. Definitely up there with the likes of Intallation00 with packed info. Keep up the great work.
tbh the Spirit of Fire should keep being written by Halo Wars 2's Dev team. they should make it the somewhat Ghost Ship "that always seems to appear the moment We're about to do something important and messes Us up" from the Enemy's perspective
My god great video!!!! You just earned a new subscriber!!! Keep up the great work and amazing intros!!!!! Also Mark you should do lore of the Forrunners, Covenant, and Spartan II,III,&IV 🙏🏾
This just reminds me of how lacking Halo Wars 2 was, how its campaign was so great but left us with so much undone and no opportunity to finish the fight. If they had continued to make DLC for Halo Wars 2 then you know I would have continued to buy it to this day. Unfortunately 343 lacks any and all ability to stick with a game, even those they tout as long term projects.
I don’t know what it is but it’s one of the most beautiful ship designs I’ve ever seen not even just limited to halo. Sits right next to the venator in my list of best ships.
Are you sure the spirit of fire only has a battery of 3 mac cannons. In game you can fire up to 4 shots at once under normal conditions. Of the 4th shot comes from the first cannon again then you should be able to fire up to 6 shots at once. The ability does have a long cooldown which is probably supposed to be the reloading sequence.
I always defer to the Encyclopedia or other reference books for the canon design features, anything in gameplay I assume is just for gameplay purposes, especially with an RTS where things are constantly changed for balancing purposes.
What I think gets left out a lot is the potential these ships could have been as fleet support vessels. Their sheer size alone would class them easily as flagships, and with their war factories being able to not only fully repair and resupply their own, but rebuild and resupply other ships as well. I had a story I was working on at one time or another, where Spartans were being trained in a similar way to the Spartan 2's, and eventually these Spartans divided up into groups of different sizes, and each unit was given a chance to pick a ship and serve like any other crew in the UNSC. One Spartan chose a Pheonix class ship for its abilities and started a campaign to go around to former warzones from the human-covenant war and reclaim lost UNSC ships. This led that ship to collect, rebuild, and crew several salvaged ships that would be Frankenstein'ed back together. It is stated that Pheonix class ships did have larger docking clamps on their angled forward wings that allowed them to dock with other UNSC warships as well. Pheonix class ships are higher overlooked and underrated even when presented in the best light. The Spirit of Fire would be a true monster and have an even grander legacy if she would have been deployed with a few destroyers, or even a few frigates.

Spirit of Fire also never really picked a fight with the Banished flagship (Enduring Conviction). And because she was such a weak ship, EC didn't even TRY to fight her - just pecked at her with Banshees.
i feel you are hitting the nail on the point, to add to it the SoF had crew that were fighting a LOOSING WAR so their resolve and determination is surpasing anything of what the infinty may have of a crew that is understandably confident after they "won" the war. not to metnion the infinity was THE palce where basically all spartan IV were stationed, no wonder they would have been overconfident to their demise adding their false hope, although spartan IVs are no joke they are the weakest spartans in experience terms, with the most "mayor conflict" being the requiem ops and even then they were mostly there as security detail and not in a real "war", most spartan 4s would be quite fresh for what the crew expects of the miracles a spartan is merchandised to perform and having essentialy a full ship of them must have really inflated their ego, and thus overconfidense
It ain’t that deep. It’s called plot armor. The plot of Infinite is absolutely terrible.
Ironic isn't it? Humanity's oldest ship survived and continues to fight for a long time while Humanity's greatest technologically advanced ship lasted in less than a decade and was destroyed in two minutes by the Banished
"FOOOOUR MINUTES. It took FOOOUR MINUTES to destroy your greatest ship, makind's crowning achievement!"
plot armor vs. purist pandering debuff
Sounds like the infinity was a victim of bad story writing than anything else
Infinity lost its plot armor to advance the plot. Haha.
One was retrofitted for war.
The other was designed for a dick measuring contest
The Spirit of Fire is probably my favorite Halo hero ship, and the OST is a big part of that. This is going to be a great video, I can tell.
Ohh you Gona get a lot of hate for that if it was posted anywhere else
I love how this old ship has a proud history that spearheaded the colonization of the stars, Brought to defend mankind and now may be the last hope against the Banished.
Compared to the hyped uped infinity this spirit of fire has humble beginnings and now legendary service.
I think the UNSC Infinity suffers from feature creep. They tried to build a ship, that can do everything.
The Spirit of Fire is a logistics ship and since war is won with logistics., she is very effective.

EDIT: Also, Phoenix-Class Colony Support Ships weren't only used for the sake of the colonisation of the outer colonies, but also the inner colonies, which the UNSC *did* have authority over.
But that's the thing, it would have been the UEG that governs the inner colonies, not the UNSC. Like the CAA governs the outer colonies, not the CAA. So I still wonder why they would be called UNSC rather than UEG.
@@MarktheCrawler Well, yes, BUT the UNSC is the United Nations Space Command, not the United Nations Navy which is a division of the UNSC, the UNSC as a whole takes care of all space vessels under the authority of the UEG which governs Earth and Her Colonies, but not Earth and all Her various ships. While yes, the UNSC is primarily a military organisation, it is also the organisation in charge of all UEG Space assets. The Spirit of Fire, is the best example that more than the design of the ship, what makes it invincible is its veteran crew and its experienced captain. Had the UNSC Infinity been run by James Cutter and his crew, we all know that it would have lasted much longer than it ultimately would.

I adore this ship so much. Honestly I think it's my favorite ship in all Halo lore haha
Halo Wars in general gives mad Battlestar Galactica vibes and the Spirit of Fire is just the ultimate expression of that. A microcosm of humanity's struggles while being immensely awesome in general! I do have a soft spot for carriers in sci-fi though, so I suppose it makes sense why the Infinity and Spirit of Fire tend to be my favs along with the epoch and punic class carriers
I love sci-fi carriers as well. Heck, the Infinity brings an entire FLEET with it.
Speaking of sci-fi carriers what's your opinion on the UNSA retribution
The Spirit of Fire is the only Halo ship I actually care for. Probably due to my long hours playing the OG Halo Wars.
The Spirit hasn't been recovered just yet, the last we've seen them they were still fighting the Banished and the last covenant remnant, the ones left over inside the keyship on the ark
That said, I am drunk as I write this, so idk nothin
Last we see the Spirit is still at the Ark though Infinite's cut ending heavily hints that the Spirit of Fire arrived to assist Chief. The engines sounded exactly like the Spirit's and Fernando was very shocked.

@@thesterrave What the hell does the bible have to do with the UNSC spirit of fire?
To be fair in 1941 Dec 7 or December 8-23 wake island time closer to Japan it self. 450 USMC 400 civ engineers and 70 navy corpsman put up one hell of a fight out number and out gun they out fought the Japanese sunk a few ships just because u are 5k against 10+ k of covy does not mean u might lose right away

I think her beauty comes from how tough she is
This will always be my favorite ship for it's looks and it's history and crew.

Cutter's rallying speech in HW2 still gets me amped up
The spirit of fire is better then the infinity change my mind
We're in agreement there, friend.
Punic class super carrier
Also yeah I agree
To be fair Master Chief entered the Approach by that hole, but yeah this is it
While the infinity didn't so a whole lot, I doubt any other ship could have punched that hole.

UNSC: "You can fit SO much military hardware in this baby"

Halo wars was my first help game since I played alot of RTS so I enjoyed halo wars and this ship the spirit of Fire is one I hold in high regard

What is the source for the image used at 18:32? Can't find anything in relation to GR Scott, and I haven't seen any weapons/armor like that before but it looks pretty neat and I wanna learn more lol
They have a cat named Spock, it is now the best UNSC ship ever
It’s probably because I’ve sunk dozens, if not hundreds of hours in Halo Wars playing as Cutter/Jerome(HW2) but the Spirit of Fire is my favorite ship in Halo
15:09 my name isn't Seth, but my Pokemon trainer name in ruby was Seth, and it still is, so I'm inclined to accept this compliment 😘
