When I was in Portugal, in some places at least, when they harvest the cork they paint the year on the tree so they know when they can harvest it again.
Thanks Richard, interesting knowledge! @Inge, no 🤭 I didn't, but I quickly found out when holding a part of the bark. I guess we can keep learning for the rest of our lives!
I agree with you, The Average Guy Traveller, they are great at story telling. It is why I keep watching their videos - even showing them in classes to my students from time to time.
So many !!! From our trip down the coast of california to our local rails to trails along the allegheny river we have some really fun places. As far as tent camping ugh our night sleeps are so hit or miss. I think a lot has to do with our surroundings. We have a lot of bears in our area it can make for intermittent sleep.
Great video, especially the POV shots that create a realism. It looks like you picked the best time to ride on a beach, low tide, as the sand is less soft.
I'm sooo looking forward to your experiences in Spain! Maudi's excellent Spanish skills should help getting in touch with people. Please also create videos during your break there... even when not cycling or travelling, I bet you can tell some nice stories to teleport all of us a España! Me encantaría!
Thanks TechnoViel! Perhaps an idea for the future... For now we are enjoying a break from making video's, but soon we'll be back on the bikes again with renewed energy! Thanks for the suggestion, something to keep in mind!
What a beautiful area and so lucky to meet so many nice people. On top of that a beautiful partner who speaks Spanish. Lucky man you. Spain looks great so far. -18F here. Bike is on the trainer. Take care and stay safe, Al
Hi Steven, hope you're doing well!? Thanks again for the compliment & wishing you lots of joy outside in nature, something we can all use especially in current times! E&M
Great video to watch, great music really good filming and editing, lovely scenery. So enjoy your meeting and getting along with others. Just plain enjoyable. I'm so jealous of multi limgual persons, now Spanish too. Awesome.
Sitting here enjoying your videos - drinking coffee and preparing my 1993 touring bike for my journey to France at Easter. Thank you for your lovely presentations. I once rode past a hunt while in France - the idiots were actually firing across the road. My wife and I were absolutely terrified.
We were so happy to recognize that beach from our biketrip across Southern Europe a few months ago! (we went from Romania to Spain) We loved it and its vastness, crossing it was one of our favourite mornings :) We were also quite "tortured" by boars while in France. In terms of the quality of sleep in the tent while on the road, I can totally relate! I did not find a solution and I honestly don't think there is one while wildcamping. Probably earplugs but it's not safe not to be aware of what's going on around the tent. The best wildcamping sleep I usually get is next to a sea or water making constant noise or in really well hidden places (mostly in Romania that has a lot of nature) or up in the mountains. But the good part is that the tiredness from a bad night sleep in the tent doesn't feel that bad when you are out all day cycling :) Enjoy your time in Spain!
Hé that's great! Did you also cycle that stretch in between the wetlands (with all the flamingo's)? A beautiful area... I can so relate to your sleep experiences... Whitenoise like the waves or a small stream definitely helps me sleep better. Or a camp location surrounded by nature, far from civilisation. I think part of it is also about acceptance, as you said it doesn't really matter when all you have to the next day is ride your bike and enjoy :-)
I'm watching you go from France to Spain and using the local language as you go, it makes me appreciate how you cater to the English speaking audience. Here in the US we don't have the opportunity to immerse in different languages the way Europeans do. I've been trying to learn Spanish for a long time and have had little success. Thank you for make this understandable for me, your language skills are impressive.
Thanks for a super post again. Really enjoy listening to you both and hearing about your wonderful trips. Almost all the Dutch people I've met, have been great travellers and great linguists. So no great surprise that you fall into that category! All the best for the coming year and please continue to post your exciting adventures.
To get a good night's sleep I must have a good mat and nice warm sleeping bag and I do not worry about any animals or people coming because it is dark and they are probably more frightened of me. I was told the cork regrows but it takes a long time.
Thanks for another great video - your editing is top-notch :). I usually am a light sleeper, especially when sleeping in a tent. What helps me is sleeping with earplugs so that I can distance myself from all the noises around. Good luck with the rest of your journey!
Some really good camera shots there, very impressive. I am one of those annoying folk who can sleep on a clothes line, well I used to be; as I've got older it's less so, but out in the open air with a good dry night and crisp temperatures I'm good. A good air-pad is essential I use a generic pad with a foam under matt that has a reflective coating, keep my body heat with me and not letting it seep into the ground or visa versa with the damp ground. I use light sleeping bags with liners for summer or just the liner if it's really warm, but for winter I have an ex army arctic bag (goes to -40c) liner, bivvy bag etc. Sleep is a high priority for me if you do long rides or walks. PJ's for the night - saves wearing day clothes and getting them stinky but not in the summer. If it's not windy, cycling in my kilt is okay. Food is the other. If just going from my home for a night or two I make up food and freeze it, by the time I'm at camp it's just defrosting nicely. For longer summer trips i buy from Farmer's Markets - cheese, fruit, bread - no wine, fresh pressed fruit juices are okay though. I carry dried foods and soon my own make of dehydrated foods. 6 litres of water. And of course, leave no trace. I am now upgrading my clothing for better more usable stuff, Marino wools, cotton, wool socks, a lot of layers.
All great tips Mark, thanks a lot! And lucky you, being able to sleep so easily... Like your suggestion of taking frozen meals for shorter trips, never thought about that! :-)
The ride through Franc was fascinating. Look forward to the ride down through Spain. A great part of the world I was lucky enough to I've in for a short space of time. Take care and ride safe. JP
Maudi, qué bueno saber que hablas español. Lo haces muy bien!!! Soy un seguidor de los viajes que están haciendo. Les escribo desde Buenos Aires, Argentina. Saludos 👍👍👍💪
Great video again. Looks like you two were having a bit of fun at the start. We saw this too when cycle touring through Portugal and found out they are cork trees and if we understood it correctly the bark grows back. We even saw large trucks loaded up with the bark driving down the road. Enjoy Spain, we always do when we're there. ~Ron y Petra
@@WheelstoWander , Yes Spain has a good variety of places to visit. When we rode from Madrid south we really enjoyed Cordoba with its unique Mezquita (Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba) and patios of flowers. Ronda was very nice and had some good hiking around, Toledo is a super cute town and then down Cadiz was very nice as well. All of these towns had very affordable campgrounds as well. We also liked the little white washed villages in the mountains in between. Unfortunately wild camping is a little bit tricky in this area, because most everything is fenced in, but it was still doable. We really love northern Spain, it is completely different from the south. It is green, hilly, foggy, and a little bit like Ireland, complete with folklore bag-pipe music. You can ride along the Camino de Santiago, there are several Pilgrim-routes you can chose from. If you want to stay in a pilgrim hostel, you will need the pilgrim passport that will get stamped. You might be able to get one of those in one of the churches along your way. It is a really neat experience to meet other pilgrims. We still have friends from our Camino ride in Santiago and Acoruna. The official Albergues (pilgrim hostels) are about 6 Euros to sleep in, the private ones are more expensive. Either way you can't go wrong, but it is cool to see how different the South and the North are. Enjoy and safe travels. Buenos viajes! Ron & Petra -- How long do you think you will be there for?
hi guys - great to see you in Catalunya (not Spain), cuidao! Great video and editing. They are cork trees and the removal of the cork does not harm the tree, it renews every 9 years. the hunters are just as crazy in Spain so be careful. I hope you were sensitive to the Catalan vs Spain issue as it is a very hot potato! i sleep great in a tent (I have just moved onto hammock camping and I sleep even better). My tips - 1) ear plugs 2) eye mask 3) a little vape (maria) before bed time. Keep up the good work and keep having fun - you guys are an inspiration! Buena suerte y buen viaje!
Great intro you guys. You definitely had me smiling. Is Spanish Maudi's 3rd language? Impressive! I had to look the tree up. The Cork Oak tree and yes the cork/bark does regenerate. Pretty cool.
You asked about sleep. I have found these to contribute to better sleep (in no particular order), (1) Sufficient or more than sufficient, extra insulation, enough to feel warm and cozy. (2) a feeling of security, a safe place that also has that extra feeling of hitting the right note. (3) A warm and truly comfortable mattress or sleeping pad, one that goes beyond merely adequate. (4) Not eating too large a meal too close to going to sleep. Undigested or incompletely digested food disallows deep sleep. Active digestion system is connected to the brain and causes activities there. (5) For some people, being or feeling clean helps. Having everything in your surroundings and yourself clean and in order helps. (5) Just before going to sleep, it helps to go through your whole body, one section at a time, and systematically tense then relax each muscle and each area. Then relax back, as if relaxing back into a very comfortable chair, into the arms of Grace and the safety there. (Or, if some other words connect you with that better, then use those words, like Universal Love or Protection or Providence or the supporting ground of the infinite.) (6) Earplugs can also help. Certain soft foam earplugs are much more comfortable than most. Some of the formable waxy ones are also very comfortable. Of course, you don't want to use them if you are sleeping where you need to listen for dangers; but it's better to find safer places to sleep anyway. I find that good, effective, comfortable earplugs definitely add another level to the quality of sleep. (7) Staying away from internet activity and stimulating talk or reading for some time before sleep. Quiet harmony, nature, harmonious interactions with your partner, a sense of loving harmony are helpful in the evening hours before going to sleep.
Thanks for the extended list, that's certainly helpfull! :-) I can relate to all of them... In practice I have to say it isn't always easy to stick to a strict & healty routine for a good night sleep, but most of the time we try to check all the boxes!
Awesome video Maudi and Erick, i folow your adventure videos since the beggining.I have one idea for your next video if you want to do make it,can you make video about your journey behind scenes type of video and whether I can get a greeting in the video😄.I wish you all the best in the upcoming adventures.Come one day into Serbia🇷🇸
I look forward to every new video, especially to hear Maudi's sweet voice (¡muy bien español mi amiga!) and to see the places and people discovered on the "ground level." You guys should try bike packing in South America.
What's your reason for not using developed campsites/campingplatz? Been a few years since I cycle-toured in Europe, but I remember most campsites charged only 10 to 20 euro. Seems like a good value for a restful nights sleep.
All campings were closed this time of year. We definitely prefer camping in nature, but we take the occasional camping or hostel to rest up a little :-)
At 72 I am afraid I sleep in pensiones in Spain and I hate refugios! I hadn't really thought about the boar hunting being a problem for camping but my cycling friends in Barcelona worry about them running out on them, especially in the evening and I have seen guys with walkie talkies out hunting them in the hills (but not drunk) I am planning South - North coast solo ride in April, mainly along the ruta de la plata which runs from Sevilla to Santiago - but I will head over the Picos for the Santander - Portsmouth Ferry - then back to London - always welcome to camp in my garden South of London Suburbia or even spare bedroom en suite? Where are you wintering in Spain? good wishes and enjoying your adventures.
Thanks so much for the invite Alan! 🙏 Yes we can imagine that at some point in our life we would prefer that too... The hunting situation in Spain seems a lot more relaxed compared to France from what we've seen untill now... Currently we are residing in Northern Spain and we plan to discover Andalusia and perhaps a part of Portugal this winter... we're now planning & preparing for the next trip. Wishing you lots of joy in preparing for your own tour! :-) E&M
@@WheelstoWander cool, may see you in andalusia- have friends in estepona if you are passing that way. The North of Spain is very interesting culturally as I feel sure you have noticed. Que vais bien
Thanks! We both use a Sony A6000 mirorless camera. For our main lenses we use, Eric: Sony G 18-105 F4 lens, Maudi: Sony 17-70 2.8. We do have to say that when possible, we would like to upgrade to for example a Sony A6600 or a full frame camera. And we also won't recommend the Sony 18-105.
Nice video and thanks for sharing your adventures! Here in Texas we have many wild pigs also, here they are actually a nuisance animal, procreate very quickly and exponentially and are very destructive. People are encouraged to hunt them, but responsibly of course. Unfortunately, not everyone is responsible or safe. Safe travels and keep having fun!
It's a shame, such a beautiful animal. But we understand that they can be destructive for the environment / farmlands, hopefully hunting will be better regulated too...
Hi Mark, we have an actioncam mount but don't really like the quality. I'm not sure if there's a mount that can handle the weight of our mirorless camera's, never really looked into it. We try to reduce weight so there are some trade offs. Most of the time holding the camera works fine, but as English isn't our first language we ocassionally have to record 'vlogs' multiple times, and then it can get a littlebit heavy for the arms ;-)
@@WheelstoWander Wow, although it's not your first language you are very proficient- I'm ashamed to admit but I know no Dutch, a bit of German, a bit more French and Italian but only some Spanish- enough to order food. I did know some Japanese but as they say if you don't use it you lose it. Bon chance mes ami.
We know and agree John, but we're totally addicted! ☕️ Meditation is something we do occasionally, though somehow on a bike tour it's not easy for us to keep a steady routine...
@@WheelstoWander yes it is hard to keep up the routine especially after a hard day in the saddle . I cycled from Bangkok to Kolkata it was amazing, can’t wait to start another adventure. Your vids are fantastic keep up the good work ❤️🙏🏽😊
Thanks Galymzhan, yes it can certainly become a problem... We take the occasional break and book a few nights in a hostel to relax a bit and edit our video's. That way we manage pretty well... :-)
True, we try to limit our intake to one cup per day in the morning! But as you might have noticed in our video's, we're not always sticking to that rule ;-)
Sleeping lightly is a result of stress. You're in a foreign place every night, not your own bed, and this is disturbing and stressful. Once you make a decision on where to sleep, stand by your decision and tell yourself that "I am safe." Your brain does not know the difference. It listens to you. If you are spiritual, you can also ask Arch Angel Michael to offer his protection. The Devine will respond if asked! I do this in thunder or hail storms, etc, to protect myself and my car.
Hi George, yes that's something we certainly try to do. Just like we're trying to find a camp location that feels safe and tucked away... But as you said, always being in a different location comes with a certain amount of stress which hasn't proven to be easy to let go off...
The trees are cork oaks and are harvested for their bark every 9 years or so. Originally used for wine bottles but cork has many uses.
When I was in Portugal, in some places at least, when they harvest the cork they paint the year on the tree so they know when they can harvest it again.
Maudi, did you really not know about the cork oak? I thought this was common knowledge ...
Thanks Richard, interesting knowledge!
@Inge, no 🤭 I didn't, but I quickly found out when holding a part of the bark. I guess we can keep learning for the rest of our lives!

I look forward to every new video, especially to hear Maudi's sweet voice (¡muy bien español mi amiga!) and to see the places and people discovered on the "ground level." You guys should try bike packing in South America.
Thanks Lawrence! Yes that would be amazing, when countries open up a little bit more South America is certainly a good option!
What's your reason for not using developed campsites/campingplatz? Been a few years since I cycle-toured in Europe, but I remember most campsites charged only 10 to 20 euro. Seems like a good value for a restful nights sleep.
All campings were closed this time of year. We definitely prefer camping in nature, but we take the occasional camping or hostel to rest up a little :-)
I sleep in a hammock. It’s really comfortable after a days riding.
Hi Tom, we both tried that in the past but prefer sleeping mats :-)
Where in Spain will you be travelling I wonder. I live in the Valencia region close to the coast.
We would like to discover all of Spain but in winter we'll stick to the South... and perhaps see a part of Portugal too :-)
I went with my girl on a bike trip this summer. 10 days 500km (she was a beginner). This is exactly how it went lol
Yes we can imagine that at some point in our life we would prefer that too...
I hope you guys also go to Portugal.
There's a good chance we will in the not so distant future! :-)
Hablas muy bien el espanol, cuidensen mucho, van a llegar cerca de volcan??
Graçias! A que volcan te refieres?
@@WheelstoWander EL de Espana
Our floors in our home are made from cork. Natural product compared to vinyl which is common in US.
Didn't know that was possible, nice to know!!
They harvest the bark for corks
'Superficial' sleep is accurate but for you traveller/poets perhaps 'surfacy sleep'. (i.e. just on the surface of sleep)
Thanks! 😄
The cork is used for bottle caps, like wine
Wow! Another great little film! Which camera and lenses are you using please?
@@WheelstoWander Thanks for your anwer
I always use ear plugs when I camp...if not every little sound wakes me up.
Same for me! Can't sleep without them...
But we understand that they can be destructive for the environment / farmlands, hopefully hunting will be better regulated too...
het is de kurkeik en de buitenkant (bast) wordt elke 9 á 10 jaar geoogst
Nice video. Hope someday I can do it also🙂😊
I love d dancing 🎶
How often do you clean your bikes?
Not very often, they get dirty again quickly!
For a good night's sleep I use ear plugs.
I do that too Stephen, helps to a certain extent!
ок !!
it is to make corks for vino, they regrow forever
You need an arm that fits to the bike handlebars for your camera, that way you're hands free. Impressive language skills there.
You need to avoid the vicious circle of caffeine ( feel tired because of lack of sleep drink coffee to feel awake)
Also meditating before bed 🙏🏽❤️😊
@@Ann05 maybe ! My money is on caffeine 😊
Your vids are fantastic keep up the good work ❤️🙏🏽😊
Bottle of wine helps me to sleep.
😅 Helps us too, but waking up on the other hand...
Sleep problem is a serious issue, you certainly need to pay attention and try to solve it, possibly by getting a professional help.
Thanks Galymzhan, yes it can certainly become a problem... We take the occasional break and book a few nights in a hostel to relax a bit and edit our video's. That way we manage pretty well... :-)
@@WheelstoWander I live right next to Jura mountains. It was nice to see familiar places in your videos. You guys are just inspirational!
Secret for tent sleeping? Utter exhaustion from a long day on the bike
Aha, we're busted hehe ;-)
Cork
Kan ik met je meewerken aan adverteren, ik heb je een e-mail gestuurd.
Yes we know Galymzhan, we try to have the best sleep we can and regularly take a few days off in a hostel for example.
🇳🇵
My secret to a good sleep in a tent is knowing that my husband is a light sleeper. So I don't need to be. 😉 I doubt if that helps you.
It doesn't, I'm jealous! For us it's the other way around (in the tent at least...)
Too much caffeine can get in the way of quality sleep.
True, we try to limit our intake to one cup per day in the morning! But as you might have noticed in our video's, we're not always sticking to that rule ;-)
Unless there are some stone-throwing Ethiopians around, I always sleep like a baby in my tent
Yes we heard that's a thing in Ethiopia! We just recently discovered your channel, what a great trip and beautiful video's... 😊
God contributed to the sabotage of my identity and reputation; "Forbidden Truths"...but what HIS are accountable for is not brought to LIGHT.
