  • Detailed comparison of the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok Style Diesel V6 and the 2023 Ford Ranger Sport Diesel V6, including engines, fuel economy, ride quality, handling and features.
The All-New Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger are two pick-up utes that share a common platform and T6.2 toolkit, plus the same Ford-built 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 engine making 184kW of power (246 hp). In the first of a series of comparison reviews of the new Amarok, we pit the upper-mid spec Style and Sport grades against one another. Four-wheel drive with low-range and a 10-speed auto are standard.
The Ranger and Amarok compete with other utes like the Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux.
Full review of the 2023 Hyundai i30 Sedan N (Elantra N), including turbo engine, LSD, handling, ride quality and fuel economy.

After watching your fantastic review I decided to test drive both. I will spend 90% of my time behind the wheel so for me it's the Amarok all day long!. The cabin is far more refined and feels more "car like " than " van like". Whereas the Ranger Wildtrack felt more "van like". The Amarok seats are softer and far more comfortable, which more than makes up for the harder drive. I was divided until I test drove them both, but not any more!

Has there been any changes mechanically between them (underbody/ bracing etc)? e.g. Has the casing (bottom tray) for the auto been changed from plastic? Is there any additional under body protection?
OR really is this just the same platform with interior and suspension changes? And other cosmetic changes?
I would be very interested in the feedback.

I have that exact Amarok on order and is a few weeks away. The only difference is I didn’t do the leather seat upgrade as the stock STYLE seat is shmick and has heating as standard. Very Impressed so far. Good review guys, thanks.

As a current V6 Amarok owner, based on what you said, I would prefer the Ford, but in Wildtrak guise. Ride comfort have always been the biggest priority for me. Cup holder placement and adjusting the aircon through screen etc are annoying but not really a deal breaker. that leather in there tho is just awesome. ONLY issue I had with the UTE (believe it or not) is the tiny tiny Indicator lamps in the rear LED units. Other drivers JUST don't see it when indicating to change lanes. As a multiple Amarok owner from 2012 , first an APR tuned 200kw 300tsi petrol 4x2 dual cab I bought brand new for $25k, then a 2016 Atacama, finally a 2019 Highline V6 with Blackpack. None of them cost more than $55k (i'm a good buyer). It's not the money with these new Amaroks it's the desire, I'm trying to like them but the old ones looked cool, sleek and attractive. They drove like SUV's too. This new Ranger in a disguise is just a ute, a regular ute hardly distinguishable from the rest of them. Maybe I can buy one and get some paintwork done or do something else to make it more appealing? Who knows. Also historically VW dealers and VW Australia offer some of the worst service of any motoring brand, so an early car that needs to see a dealer frequently will be a nightmare.

    • @chasingcars

They will be very similar in terms of towing performance, but there is a key difference for those towing at the very heavy end of the capacity. While the GCM is the same for both at 6400kg, the Ranger is 61kg lighter. For trailers above 3100kg, the Ranger can carry 61kg more payload, which could be useful. For trailers below 3100kg, normal payload limits apply, which are slightly better for the Amarok (1031kg vs 1022kg).

Amarok for me, for all the reasons you mention. Plus, I just don’t like the way the Ranger looks - trying too hard to look like a big American truck (for obvious reasons, but still…).

I have watched plenty reviews but no journalist seems to know the style variants. So far I have learnt the style comes in either bi-turbo 2 l 154kw or 3.0 l 184 kw v6. But what seems more confusing is that the other style comes with 3 bar led day time at the top of the headlights and a hallowagen indicator at the tail. Where as this one you reviewed comes with full led day time lights and full led at the tail just like the Aventura. Also in the next review could you clarify the differences between the Pan Americana and the style v6. Is there another difference apart from the blacked out wheels and sports bars of the pan americana? They say it's off road focused but I don't see how it differs from the style v6. Any difference in suspension tuning? Thank you.

    • @chasingcars

Yes, the Panamericana has an entirely different damper to the Style, so the ride is quite different - a bit softer but still controlled.

Hopefully this platform sharing exercise will work out better for Volkswagen than the Mercedes X-Class based on the Nissan Navara. Like that example, the ranger will of course sell in much larger numbers as it’s a little cheaper, better supported and most punters won’t care about the amorak’s benefits in some areas.

Yeah, and guys would choose the BT-50 over D-Max; or not realise how many tranny bits are shared among Hilux / Scorpio / BT-50 / D MAX / etc. And people buy the badge, not the ute. That is downright daft, sometimes. Would they do the same with computers that share mixed hardware, go after branding? That would even be sillier. While many are built by either Clevo or TongFang.....
