  • This video is meant to show just how easy it is to quilt using the Octi-Hoops. I accidentally used an air erasable pen and struggled to see the lines. This caused me to not be perfect, not that anyone can be, but I sure try. ;) So be sure to use the water erase pen. :) Please let me know what you think in the comments below!

    Those really look fun to use. I really have trouble with free motion quilting and I am watching from Albuquerque New Mexico, from Albuquerque New Mexico.

    You make it look so easy! I've tried free motion in the past & had a hard time with the fabric not wanting to move freely. I'm going to have to start saving my pennies to get these hoops.

      The hoops make it so much easier because you don't push down which causes erratic stitches. 😁

    When do you know it’s ok to not use a foot and when would you need to use a foot?

      If the fabric bounces as your needle exits the fabric, use a foot. 🙂

    The Martelli hoops look much easier to use than fighting with two hoops. Lots of starting and stopping with the Octi Hoops. :-(

      Mary Ann Dunham until you try these, it would be impossible to see the true benefits. Each are completely different from one another. the frame you mentioned requires you push down on the quilt and your hands are spread apart, not using the same muscle memory as writing and your arms are raised as well making it extremely difficult and damaging to both the quilt and the quilter. These Octi-hoops are healthy for you and cannot create a pucker on the quilt. Yes, you move slower and calmer and in that rested relaxed body position, magic happens and MOST people can quilt really really well, really really fast..... perception is just that, experience is what lead me to create these wonderful and amazing and super fun hoops and thousands of people are having fun... I have been hugged at shows and thanked repeatedly by owners even some that one Best Of Show prizes using them. And they, understand the benefits as they experience them for themselves. The only hoops that offer true muscle memory are the Octi-hoops and that is why so many people are succeeding. In all of history, Free-Motion was only something a few people got good at, now because of these Octi-hoops, most are good. :) (Hug)

    Do you ever use needle down position? If not, why not?

    • @clare-rowley
      @clare-rowley  9 лет назад

      Laura Schrier No. I don't because it is not needed. Feel free to if you want :) I've had many customers tell me they are puzzled as to why they don't feel the need to lower their needle. There are other reasons, for instance - the quilt can break the needle as there is no foot to hold it and prevent it from bending the needle. Another reason - the Needle Down option on the machine is a huge cause of broken needles for Free-Motion techniques... it normally happens as the machine is slowing down and our hands are still in motion... the needle tip basically stubs it's toe on the fabric surface because we lose our attention on the needle as we get mesmerized by the stitching... and Snap! Most common reason for lowering the needle is to not lose your spot while sewing. There is no chance of losing your spot if you can see the needle and your brain knows this. It becomes easier to leave it up and safer. I taught over 100 students and 3 needles broke in 2 days of Free-Motion... all of them broke when the machine was not running. They broke them by pulling the hoop out and being mindless about the fact there isn't a foot to protect the needle from being struck by the frames as you move them off the project. I hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions! :)

    I don/t have a foot for quilting unless I buy one so I love that you don't need one but when I tried this my fabric keep poppy up when the needle went in and out. should I hold tighter or use spray adhesive on it? Is the feed dogs up or down? also I just use the weighed hoop to try so please any advice you have would be great, I hate quilting in the ditch all the time.

      Linda Denton Even with a foot - as the needle exits, it can lift the fabric a bit. If it's bouncing a lot, you may be using a hand-dyed fabric. Have you pre-washed your fabric? I do recommend basting with spray if you're making a large quilt. Also, if you keep the stitching along the edge of the frame, you'll have less of this. Most important - you are seeing this more because you're still learning. Imagine where you want to sew, focus on the path ahead and the fabric movement will fall away into the background. Let me know if this doesn't help. Also, do lower the feed dogs if your machine can. :)

      Clare Rowley I am just using muslin and thin cotton batting to practice. I heard you talking about other batting and thread that last longer in quilts but couldn't tell really what you were saying on you tube, do you have and of this info written on your website or somewhere? I am kinda new and was told to use cotton fabric with cotton thread and batting. Also I do not wash my fabric first. So any help or suggestion where to find info would be great, thanks and I may buy your octi hoops even though i read alot that people said they didn't wokr as easy as you look and I want to free motion quilt and have tried those other heavy things like the fabric glide and the heavy round thing LOL. Love your videos and hope someday to do as you are doing and get the hang of it. I have a Bernina 440 if makes a difference. You also said that I won't have to drop the feed dog with your hoops?

      Linda Denton I find that Muslin is sticky on the needle - I don't practice with it. I also prefer Bamboo batting (we're adding it to our site any day) 100% Bamboo is better than part cotton.. I know this probably sounds odd but here's the science of it. Bamboo is stronger and drapes with the fabric better than others. I love it! I've had cotton and wool batting rot and decay - it will happen in the quilt too. Polyester and Bamboo and 100% Polyester thread for piecing and quilting (unless for an infant - then Rayon thread) Use a rounded/ball tip needle and your quilts will last much longer than using other methods. Oh, you're not using the Octi-Hoops either... well you'll have a better response with them and it works fantastic with the Bernina! When you take your foot off there is nothing in your way/ :)

      Clare Rowley why should I use rayon thread for infant quilts instead of polyester?

      Is there a special setting on your machine after you remove the foot or do you just start sewing?
