NYCT Bus | 2017-19 New Flyer Xcelsior XD40 Review

  • Finally, I have made a review of my favorite XD40s. These XD40s were brought here rapidly, as NY's first cuomofied XD40s in 3rd batches. They were brought here to most retire the 1999 Novabus RTS' and to ex out the Orion VII OG HEVs in some depots for a displacement or retirement.
Since 2018, Jamaica Depot was the first to have these starting with #7484 as a pilot unit. They got more sets when July comes for them. Before then, I had fanned them back when they were pulling into Flatbush Depot and East New York Depot between May and July that year. I really miss myself having to see #7623 and riding since early June 2018. Those +SBS XD40s these 2 depot have exceeds my value prediction of a new bus. After these 2 first Brooklyn Depot had these; Fresh Pond Depot, Grand Ave, Ulmer Park Depot, Micheal J.Quill, and oddly West Farms Depot got these sticky for their deals to excuse the Orion VII OG CNGs for their retirement by mid-2019. In mid-2019, transferring into and working out of ENY Depot gives more chances to touch more of these XD40s comapared to how much I touched out of MJQ. And Micheal J.Quill I see, is the most special depot as my first former workplace to have these uncommon newbies. It's due being retrofitted with Aesys LED signages(signs with thinner fonts) that we have never seen since 2004, when older buses like the Orion VII OG HEV as Gen 2s were being delivered 16 years ago. Now in this new decade and because of the COVID-19 impact I had to ride some of these which feels more rare ride I took compared to 2019 and earlier. And #7634(ex. B46 +SBS unit) was my first of FB's local XD40 I rode to WB Bridge Plaza for the time. Then after I reached there, #7829 was my last XD40 I see and rode out of GAD on the B39 coming back to Brooklyn across the Williamsburg Bridge.

7572-7591 were transferred to MHV Depot due to the transfer of the M66 to MHV and the M60-SBS to MCH. 2017 LFSAs 5444-5467 were transferred from MJQ to MCH as well. These moves happened due to Quill receiving roof repairs. 5457 was the last Quill bus to run on the M60, While 7594 was the last Quill XD40 to run on the M66. 9700 was the last Quill LFS HEV to run on the M66 in general. 5451 became the first Hale LFSA to run on the M60. And 7574, 7581 and 9458 became the first MHV XD40 and XDE40s to run on the M66. This was the first time that MHV used diesels since the 1999 RTSs. Around 2017-2018 I believe. Later on 5/3, The depot received 7550-7551, 7568 from JA. This also made 2016-17 LFSAs an official part of Hale again, for the first time since 2020. Between September 2-6, Grand Avenue Depot became Grand Theft Depot as many have putted, When they took 7490 from Gun Hill, 7550-7551, 7572 from Manhattanville, 7571 from Jamaica and 7592 from Quill, And 2015 XD40s 7182 from Ulmer and 7304 from Flatbush. Some as loans and some as potential transfers. Some which are still there to this day.

7484-7506, 7546-7547, 7549 were also transferred from JA Depot to GH Depot due to JA taking some of GH LFSs back in February 2023.

I feel Manhattan is running out of these, due to the LFS HEVs and XDE40s. I know those replaced both the Orion VII OG and NG HEVS, keeping 2010 NG HEVS at Manhattanville, which I’ve caught #4681 on the M5 and M11 both in December, 2023, in two different locations, however, nearby.

  • @maxwish9471

I was confused, when I first realized the B82 and B82-SBS were based out of East New York, instead of Ulmer Park or Flatbush. It makes sense, because the B83 and B84 are based out of East New York, and run a little closer to the depot, with the B6 being at Ulmer Park. This reminds me of the fact the Q17 runs from Jamaica to Flushing, and is based out of Jamaica, and the Q31 runs from Bayside to Jamaica, and is based out of Casey Stengel. Speaking of Casey Stengel, I’ve seen pictures of these on the Q12, before being converted into an Articulated Route. I assumed it was a loan from Jamaica Depot.

The next day, I was walking with my grandparents at Broadway & W 64th St, which was December 19, 2023, and caught 7581 on the M66, in the wrong place. Before that, I caught 7604 on the M72 saying it was on its way to the Upper East Side, running on Central Park South, which was silly. I know the M72 doesn’t run on Central Park South. It was probably an error or going back to MJQ.

I’ve thought about there is a shortage of “Cuomolivery” articulated buses to run on the B82-SBS. If the 2009-10 LFSAs retire, the 2024-25 XE60s should also be delivered into East New York, for the ✈️ B15, B82-LCL, and B82-SBS conversions. I feel like there weren’t any articulated routes across the East River before 2011.

I came up with a new dream plan. My dream plan is for Flatbush Depot to give their LFSAs to Yukon Depot for the S79-SBS, transfer all their Tuskegee Airmen’s XD60s out, and transfer them to East New York Depot for the ✈️ B15 and B82-SBS, and bring Mother Clara Hale’s LFSAs to Tuskegee Airmen. Therefore, Tuskegee Airmen would be an “all LFS depot”, and Mother Clara Hale would be an “all New Flyer depot”.

After getting of an M7A Car Metro-North Railroad on the Harlem Line at Botanical Garden with my grandmother, I caught 7501 on the Bx25 making its way towards Bay Plaza. I know about the order where Jamaica Depot gave 25 units to Gun Hill as a swap for the 2015-16 LFSs. It feels interesting with this as the same generation, also having the 2019 LFSs. It’s like Manhattanville with the 2021 LFS HEVs and the 2021-22 XDE40s.

Great review man, I Remember The 1st Time Seeing These XD40s out of fresh pond on the Q58, 7517 was the 1st unit i encountered during my 1st month of my freshman year, i took 2 quick pics and was impressed that the Newer XD40s were delivered with the Cuomo Livery, After The Q58 was taken over by Grand Avenue Depot On January Of 2019, i didn't have a chance to ride the Fresh Pond Xcelsior Units, Even Tho I was lucky to ride the first batch of XDE40s on the Q58, by mid january or February of 2019 i encountered and rode on 7521 on the Q58 from grand avenue depot on my way home from school, it looked fresh and the ride was somewhat amazing than the 2015 XD40s, i mainly rode on the XDE40s and XD40s on the Q58 during my freshman year i started to like these newer xcelsiors, i thought MTA Bus Co or Casey Stengel Depot might have these XD40s too but oh well, 7560-7819 are the new units to keep the memories of the late Orion VII CNGs i mainly see those numbers as old Gens than xcelsiors, when The Q58 returned to fresh pond, i only rode a small number of these Xcelsiors on my way to and from school as i was focusing my task to catch the retiring Orion VII OGs from 2004-2005, to end my thoughts and opinions i give these Xcelsiors a 10/10 for best looking buses of NYCT
