i loveed the detailed explanation on compressor and pro L2. second good video on Pro L2 i ve ever watched, and first one was also on this channel. and you explain things much better. Thank you for all this knowledge sharing on good tracks. I dont get to watch master Lucas' videos till the end due to not liking the genre or the songs . awesome tutorials. big THANKS master
Couple of things about this whole process that i think could be improved. If you are using compression on the master, try to stay away from attack times lower than 30ms, that would kill the transients and you will most likely loose punch. Though the exact duration of transients varies, and will sometimes be much shorter, 30 ms (give or take) is the window of time in which the “punchiness” of a sound really makes itself known, you wanna let that come trough. The release on the other hand is more of a feel knob, but if you are a beginner, just calculate the release with the bpm of the song (bpm to ms) to get the compressor to pump at the right tempo and start from there. On the topic of the pro L2. That zoomed out view is not at all what is recomended, you wanna see what happens between transients, that is key when setting a good release time, you essentially want the limiter to release rigth before the next transient hits, otherwise you are just limiting unwanted transients loosing dynamic feel. If you can tell by ear thats great, but if you are just starting to master, look at the transients very closely. Stay away from true peak limiting, that should always be off becouse this limiter is not good at that, it will change transients. Use another plugin to do TPL. Work always on at least 16 oversampling, otherwise you will get aliasing distortion, specially on L2 which is the less forgiving limiter in terms of distortion. Dont use 1:1 auto gain, just pull the gain up while holding opt/alt key, that will compensate the gain by moving the output in the opposite direction (avoiding the use of the auto internal gain compensation which is sometimes wrong due to calculating that in real time). Stay away from Agrressive mode, thats one of the worst algorythms, if you are starting use modern. Try to never go past 0.18ms of lookahead, if you increase lookahead too much it will make your master more transparent wich is good, but it will loose a lot of punch and depth. The amount of lookahead in this video is certainly not good for the track, my guess is that becouse hes using Agressive mode (wich is almost like a clipping one), and this is not transparent at all, the only way to compensate for distortion is to increase lookahead. And yes, it will sound better (less distortion) but it will also remove punch and depth, its better to use modern and a lower lookahead time. For the channel linking, if you have a track with a lot of different stereo information (like some wide percusions for example), stay away from the transients knob, put it to 0. The link will almost ruin the interaction between the elements, but if you have some even stereo information or for some reason you want to even it out, use it, i personally would never use 100%. Every mastering process should always be looking at a meter showing dynamic range and RMS levels, i recomend bx meter. i hope this information helps, big hug!
but if we did micro dynamic changes for volume before drop in mixing and production stage, do we need to do this another time by limiter's gain knob (because limiter may kill the micro dynamic which we created to make drop big)
Really cool! The "down part" if we should call it as this is the distorted kick that make a bit difficult to hear what 30ms attack on compressor can cause... But the video c9ntent is full of great information! Thank you!!!!
I've tried to recreate that kind of brass shot sound for a while now, but I haven't come anywhere close to something that sounds good. Does anyone know if Zen World got that preset in some of his packs? 2:27
Sick video man, Ive been using the Clipper/Limiter combo for a while and its working very good. how do you avoid your masters going over 0 db after exporting? my tracks seems to go over 0db even with truepeak and 32x oversampling activated
My mastering mentor taught me to set the output to -0.03 or -0.30. That usually fixed those issues for me, especially when exporting to MP3. However I do have to add that some masters from back in the big room days would be clipping in Ableton when I would reference.
You could do more limiters in a row With complete clip at The end for a transparent shaping of The peaks. An idea for sich a setup could be: compress, clip, soft limit 2 dB, Haarder limit 2db, clip at 1sample below 0dbfs (airwindows cliponly vst comes to mind). Keep pushing!
Little tip with proL2. Click the headphone icon to listen to what's being added to the signal by the limiter. You want something that still sounds musical but shouldn't sound like the whole track. I use this to fine tune my limiter settings 🎉
hello dude thx for the video ! For the "Width Control" trick, did you try the same trick with the voxengo msed plugin by pushing down the side gain ? learn it from kshmr video, its more natural effect :)
@@averagebedroomproducer5008 yeah literally figured it out yesterday. The audio signals are adding on top of each other causing higher volume. I thought limiter on each track with -6db ceiling will limit the master to -6 but I was super wrong 🙂
🤔 ...WHY would you use a 3rd party clipper when Ableton's stock clipper is PHENOMENAL. And hardly uses any CPU 😉 I GUARANTEE if you resampled your signal with the Ableton clipper vs your 3rd party clipper you wouldn't be able to HEAR the difference. Neither would your oscilloscope. Jus' Sayin' 🎶😎🎶 ...Nice track, though 👍
Hi Zen, regarding clipping I can only warmly recommend the channel of Baphometrix. He calls his method "Clip to Zero (CTZ)". I link here his playlist to CTZ. ruclips.net/p/PLxik-POfUXY6i_fP0f4qXNwdMxh3PXxJx
Zen mispronuncing names is one of my favorite things on RUclips 🖤 solid tips
That Limiter automation is Sick man! 😮 Never thought of doing this 😅 Crazy Good! Keep it up!
Thanks!
Zen back with another cool video!
literally you are the best man, thank you for everything
Luca PreTOLESI...the rest is AWESOME, thanks
Tremendo video hermano, todo perfectamente separado por temas en la linea de tiempo, claro, con pocas vueltas y repaso al final. Un 11 de 10 lo tuyo
Great tutorial as always 🔝
Tune is awesome man!
Very well produced track. Love the mixdown/master. Thanks for giving insights.

Subscribed!! Which pack has those basslines in your track 0:40 ??
I always struggle with the mixing and equalizing, this is super helpful! Thanks man 🙏🏼

If you use Pro-L you can put one at the very end and set it to safe mode with true peak on and -0.1 output.
This compressor looks like the API 2500 from waves, I can achieve the same result with that one ?
API 2500 from waves is maybe the worst emulation of a hardware that ive ever seen, i would stay away from it

I always put limiter on each track and put it to -6db but it seems my master goes above -6db anyway. Do you know why this happens?
