    Hey guys, here's what worked for me:
    I have an LG oled and Sony soundbar. I had to connect soundbar to the TV via HDMI arc port. The Xbox had to be connected directly to the TV via HDMI port 1.
    It's a little counter intuitive but when you select input 2 (arc) on the TV, it will know to get the audio from that source and use the video from the other source (HDMI port 1 in my case).
    You'll know it worked bc you'll see the Dolby vision/HDR notification as well as a Dolby Atmos notification. Hope this helps

    If you have Glitchy sound in Atmos (because most HDR 4K Tv`s do not have `eArc [HDMI 2.1]`, as they only have `Arc` [HDMI 2.0]) you (like I now have to do) have to buy an even newer 4k/8k HDR Tv with >eArc< NOT >Arc

    • @donkmeister
      @donkmeister 3 года назад

      I know it's a year ago, but from the way you describe it I think the issue here is you are routing the signal from XBOX to receiver via the TV. The receiver should always be the central hub of your home cinema set-up, including input switching. ARC and eARC are just there so you can use the built-in apps on your TV and still get decent sound.

      Louis Loranso If you want Dolby Atmos you will need to connect the Xbox to a device that is Dolby Atmos capable. In this case, that’s the LG Soundbar. You would need to connect it like this:
      Xbox to soundbar, Soundbar to TV.
      Hope that helps.

      S T E E Z Y Ah, welcome to the world of HDMI. These issues are the bane of my life. Basically, the soundbar is Dolby Atmos capable but not HDR capable, while the TV is HDR capable but not Atmos capable. EDID (extended display identification data) will therefore tell the Xbox to turn off the features not supported by the connected device. I’ve had this with capture cards, where you lose sound once the card is connected because it’s not capable of 5.1. It can get very complicated trying to work these issues out.

      I love KODI, though I'm a bit off the pace with it currently. I started using it back on the original Xbox when it was called XBMC. Back then, trying to get a console to do home theatre was nigh on impossible but XBMC changed all that. I honestly think the modding community on the OG Xbox inspired the work Microsoft did with the 360 (we know a modded Xbox was shown to Bill Gates)... And now our consoles do pretty much everything we could want.

Are you going from Xbox to soundbar to TV or is it connected in a different way? If the Xbox is connected to the TV you won’t be able to enable Atmos as most TVs don’t support it. You would have to connect to the Soundbar first and pass the signal through to the TV. That can cause other issues but we’ll get into that if we need to. Even if your soundboard supports Atmos, if you route everything through your TV first, Atmos won’t work unless the TV is Atmos enables (and most aren’t). If your Soundbar is Atmos capable then try connecting to the soy bar first, and then passing the signal to he TV and see if that solves your problem.

I have my xbox connected to a Denon AVR, same setting in the video, but I can’t get any sound from my rear channels... Oddly enough I get sound from my surrounds and 4 atmos. Does xbox fully support 7.1.4? I am watching 4K blu rays and if not very little, some sound should be coming out my rears. The rear channels were calibrated in audessy so the receiver is recognizing them. Would appreciate any feedback you have. Thanks

    Hey brother! I got a Sony A9G tv and the Sony htst 5000 sound bar. Do I have to connect my Xbox to the soundbar or can this still work if it’s connected to the tv? Oh and when playing a game that’s not Atmos supported do I need to switch the sound to a different setting? Probably two stupid questions but I read somewhere that I didn’t need to plug the Xbox into the sound bar since the tv supports Atmos.

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  4 года назад

      You don't need to switch the atmos setting. You can just leave it on.
      As for the connections: that can get tricky and depends on what your soundbar and/or TV are capable of passing through to the other device. It's difficult for me to comment on your particular devices as it varies a hell of a lot from device to device as to how you should connect to get the best out of them.
      If your TV is 4k capable and your sound bar can pass a 4k signal through to the TV, I'd be inclined to set it up that way. If your soundbar can't handle 4k passthrough, then you'll have to come up with an alternative.
      I hope that helps a little bit. Let me know how you get on.

    I know this vid is already a bit old but just to put it out there - I've discovered it's not necessary to set up the Atmos app on Xbox - the Xbox can just passthrough the audio and the receiver decodes the signal which after listening to both modes I prefer..

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  4 года назад

      Do you mean you are not setting atmos in the Xbox sound settings? If that's the case they you won't actually be experiencing Atmos. The receiver can approximate Atmos in much the same way as you can generate a surround sound signal from stereo but it won't sound the same as material that is actually encoded to deliver surround sound or (in this case) Atmos. Have you tried listening to material that is Atmos encoded?

    • @globalcat
      @globalcat 4 года назад

      @@JoeChip Yes I tried this out with a Shazam Bluray and while I wasn't being empirical about it .. it certainly seemed like some sounds (overhead for ex) were more pronounced when the atmos app ws off . I've tried a number of different methods of playing atmos material and found my receiver to be accurate in displaying when the output is atmos or not (it doesn't always display atmos and I found I had to change a setting to make it work. In this case the receiver displayed atmos with my bluray when the app was both on and off). But I can double check the sound quality with a number of atmos blurays I have. My understanding of bitstream passthrough comes from here (very end of article): in.pcmag.com/microsoft-xbox-one-s/111941/xbox-one-insiders-get-an-early-taste-of-the-creators-update

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  4 года назад

      Dorian Davis DTS is a completely different technology, though many devices support it along with Dolby. Generally speaking the devices in the chain will have to support the processing you are trying to use. As a rule you can just stick with Dolby. I used to stress about shit like that but, honestly, life’s too short.

      You should be able to plug the HDMI from the Xbox directly into the TV. In fact, that’s one of the more straightforward setups. Just look at the C7’s manual and make sure you have it set up for Atmos. Once that’s done, just select Atmos as your output from the Xbox and you should be good to go.

      @JoeChip  6 лет назад

      Gamer Dad Whether it is worth it or not come down to personal preferences and equipment. If you can afford to put speakers in your ceiling then it will create a more realistic sound field. Using speakers that fire upwards to bounce off the ceiling is less effective (this is what I have) but worth trying out. The obvious issue is cost, though. If you don’t have an Atmos amp, you’ll need to upgrade, and then you’ll need to invest in at least on pair (ideally two pairs - front height and rear height) of Atmos speakers. Gets pretty expensive, pretty fast.
      It is cool, though.

      It talked down to me (but that's ok for less tech-friendly types) the problem is I was trying to connect an Atmos soundbar & needed to know that xbox hdmi goes into soundbar and then soundbar hdmi goes into TV. Not knowing that meant the 3rd option was not selectable and this video just added to frustrations suggesting theyre was nothing to it. BTW Don't buy a Sony HTX8500 it has atmos but isn't surround. They shouldn't be allowed to deceptively describe a product in that way it cost me a weekend of stress to discover whether it was not setup correctly or just didn't work as a Surround system... it doesn't.

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  4 года назад

      rokridge Oh, I would never talk down to anyone intentionally but I do subscribe to the idea that you should never assume knowledge.
      Sound bars, it seems, are particularly awkward when it comes to setting up both Atmos and 4K. A number of people have run into problems. It’s difficult for me to comment as regards how they are set up, though, as I don’t own a sound bar.
      I hope you manage to get it sorted one way or another. I’ve encountered quite a few problems sorting out sound on the Xbox (and other components) and, frankly, it’s a pain in the arse.

      hi again, Im using a 5.1 HTS 3910 atmos system now. Any idea why Im not getting vertical depth much?

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  4 года назад

      rokridge It’ll depend on the software to some extent. Movies and games that are encoded with Atmos are your best bet and with give you the best results but even then it’s going to depend on the mastering.
      Also, I note that the Onkyo HTS 3910 doesn’t have a dedicated height channel (or channels). That is likely part of the problem, though without hearing it it’s difficult to know for certain. You could play about with speaker placement to try and get the best sound, as well. It’s amazing how a shift in the position of speakers can make a sound field snap into place.
      Hope that’s some help.

      If you want Dolby Atmos, then yes. Stereo is still pretty good but you won’t get surround sound without a 5.1 or higher setup (though some sound bars are apparently pretty good). Also, Atmos for home theatre requires an amp that is certified for Atmos and at least one pair of height speakers. It can get very expensive.
