This gentleman took his time to help a lot of us thank you my friend.. This was a 2001 4.8 Chevy GMC this truck has been very good to me Since 2001 it was time for me to give it its due respect fix it
Hope you know that you’re still the most detailed video on replacing these head gaskets on these LS engines! Was a huge help for me when tackling this project myself. Cheers bud!
I owe you a big thanks, bother! Just did my head gasket last week, and your videos were priceless! Side note, don't forget to plug the PCV valve back in! HA! I had trouble getting my truck to stay running for more than a few seconds; plugged the valve back in, cleaned off the back of the throttle valve, played with it a bit, and now she runs like a dream! If anyone is having the same problems, just keep tinkering!
Hey my friend thank you so much for showing us how to do this I really really appreciate it I've done it everything is running nice and smooth thank you so much now I just have to do the ABS module bleeding the brakes thank you my friend thank you
Man... I have to give you props.... it looks cold as shit and you're outside making this happen like a BOSS ! Here I am watching your video, wondering whether I can do this project myself in a heated garage.
I have a 2000 Silverado 4.3 v6 My oil is fine and coolant level doesn’t change. But I’m blowing white smoke from the exhaust from time to time. Getting more here lately when I first start to go to work. Everything I’ve read so far on the internet has led me to this video. In your opinion should I be concerned with changing my head gasket ?
@@superduty4556 back in the late 1990's I had a 1973 Brewster Green Trans Am with the D port 455 but I put a 1974 455 Super Duty motor in it. Came across that 74 455SD motor in mid 1990's from a local trading post ad.......was just the motor as the owner had already sent the rest of the Trans Am to the crusher.......uuuuuugh......but I got that motor though. Wound up selling the TA after my first divorce around 1998.......along with all my other Pontiac parts including a 1970 400 from an SJ Grand Prix. But that 74 455 SD engine was really rare......many people fail to realize how special they were....basically nothing like a D port or even an HO. They had as much race tech built into them as any Hemi engine back in those days. Yes, miss having an F body to romp on.
@@gregallen9065 yep. SD heads were actually designed by AFR and the pushrod holes are sleeved. Provisions for dry sump oiling, extra ribs in the block for strength. A work of art. I have a '74 SD Formula.
Why did you want to replace the head gasket? My 5.3 is blowing radiatiors with no sign of overheating pr blowing smoke or milky oil? Hoping it's not a head gasket. I did the combustion leak detector test. And it passed.. any help is appreciated thanks.

I’m thinking of doing the head gasket son my 6.0 vortec. Found a bit of coolest in my oil.
@@musicfan1935 your not replying to Aaron . your talking shit to Steve. Some dude trying to help his son. Shame on YOU sir.
Nice work I was going to go the same route but found it cheaper just to find a low mileage 5.3 replacement from a ls shop
Yes sometimes you get lucky and find an engine cheaper than the work it is to take it apart
Good job well explained Thank you!!
You should definitely drain your coolant before removing the head, it spills antifreeze everywhere and gets into the cylinder.
Rookie mistake 🤣🤦🏽♂️
I think the stud on the flange broke cuz it was trying to tell you it didnt need removed lol
Is this a thousand dollar job in the shop.
Thank you for making this video. : ) Well done.
so where does the coolant go thats draining on the ground?? the storm drain, then to nearest river or stream???
Awesome stuff... getting ready to replace heads on 2000 Silverado 4.8L. What brand head gasket did you buy? Thanks!
I usually stick to the Fel-Pro brand pretty reliable
Quick question , My plastic engine cover has a striped nut. any ideas on getting it off with out breaking it
Nice job, even out in the elements.
Was a code of P0301 showing as a misfire code ??
Great video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Would it be possible to have replaced just the driver’s side head gasket without removing the intake manifold? Asking for a friend
No intake manifold has to be removed to remove either head
Hey bro so when you install the rocker arms just torque it down no adjustment pls reply thanks
Yes on the newer style LS engines there is no adjustment on rockers they are hydraulic
@@zsproshopthanks I have 2004 Chevy tahoe 5.3 is it the same engine right
Yes should be the same style engine
Replacing lifters myself, but for the rocker arms how much do I Torque them down to ? how many pounds ?

Super stoked that mine didn't come with an EGR from the factory.
Yes it is kind of a garbage connection almost guaranteed to break one Bolt

Mechanic told me i have a cracked nut on my exhaust manifold. Does that mean this job is out of the question at this point? 😅
What is "a fifteen with a long ratchet?"

@@sidneycoakley1524 Ahh. Thanks. About to undertake this myself.
Just a longer ratchet has more leverage to break bolts loose
I have 2002 chevy suburban will it be the same
yes should be the same
Strike 1 fram filter strike 2 wrong coolant.
Usually just put whatever color coolant is in the car already not really a fan of Dex Cool too have had some corrosive issues with it in the past
