I just completed mine with the help of your video, great job. I have a couple friends that worked at Chevy. They made a good point to make sure where the head bolts go into are COMPLETELY dry. If not, any water, coolant in the holes will expand and crack the block. They have seen it plenty of times. I would of never even thought of that. Use lots of air and make sure they are DRY.
Did you need to do anything with the timing or no?
@@andycampos9223 nope, another great feature of this motor.
You need an angle torque wrench, can't do it without it. Maybe rental places, if not they're about $200. make sure you replace all bolts with new ones. Exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, etc etc.
Take lots of pictures as references. They come in handy.
Lube the bolts good , and no u don't need a special torque wrench , tty , just use ur brain
This is one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. Being a retired GM mechanic I am completely impressed with your video. Great job guys. Great job.
But how does the rocker arms be torque down do you just torque them down or got to position the cam to tdc ? Or its just like out them on and torque them to spec?
I hope you got er but message if you didnt. Reddit built all my motors 35k thou plus so far. @PYRO_HOODWORKS
@@PYRO_HOODWORKSjust torque them to 22ft pounds is what I found in the Hanes Manuel
Shut up dip shit you union guys can’t even wipe your own ass
@@PYRO_HOODWORKSI was wondering the same thing.
Some videos show torque in a sequence. Not sure what to do.
Why can’t every instructional video be this good!! Thank you guys! Simple and to the point. Perfect
Right?
Great video. Helped out this weekend. From tear down to start up was about 12hours. I don’t have power tools so everything was by hand but this was definitely an easier repair than what I was expecting. Took lots of pics for when I had to put everything back. Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Saved me a lot of money and having to miss work.
Shit im working on my 08 suburban with a 5.3 i believe there is oil seeping in from the head gasket by cylinder # 1 front driver side.
I took off all the spark plugs on the driver side and they were wet with oil. And while it was running the oil pressure was as low as 15 psi
The best video I have ever seen to perform any kind of work on a vehicle! Holy cow! Great job
This was likely the single best how-to video I've ever seen. It's definitely worth the watch.
Seriously this is the perfect instruction video. No bs, straight to the point. The world would be a better place with more people like you guys. Lol
Would’ve been perfect if not for the loud music. At times it was louder than him talking but yup great video nonetheless!
Thanks for this video. I know it’s 3 yrs ago but still very helpful. For those of you doing this job, you may as well change the oil pressure sensor while you have the intake off, even if you don’t need one. It WILL leak or fail eventually. Thanks again!
Go on fam😂 you’ll be the reason they mess up let them do that first
Best instructional video on head gasket replacement ever made. 👌. Thank you so much you guys. Both of you are amazing!!
Perfect. I’m used to doing my own work and rather than send to a professional who will take shortcuts and eventually fail prematurely. I will do it myself and only blame myself if anything happens. It’s a great time to freshen the heads, add heavier duty springs, rocker, maybe a set of headers. Thank you for a great video
It was about 9 minutes into it that I realized exactly how lazy I've become and that I would just rather sell my truck 😂
For me it was 5:16
Bout half way their sir
6 mins for me 😅
@@tali6an6oggey2 good for both of you, 4:03 here
about the 7 min mark for me. physically tore my engine down too. now I'm overwhelmed, in over my head and calling the salvage yard first thing tomorrow to come pick up my truck
Working on my 03 HD right now. Just finished head gaskets on my 1998 K1500 Sunday and now onto the next head gasket project. keeping the old stuff alive at my place, or at least trying to. My HD has just over 270K on it. also upgrading mine to use all 4 steam ports on the head being I have it this far apart. Great video !
Excellent video. The only part that seems unrealistic is the complete absence of obscenities. 😄
😂😂
Huge help. I have a 2006 Silverado with a 4.8 and the 706 heads. Replaced the head gaskets at 200,000 miles but they didn’t shave the heads and they are no warped and need replaced at 240,000. Got them off rockauto for a heck of a deal. Thanks for the help and step by step info!
You’re welcome.
I have a quick question. If you remove the heads do you have to take them to a machine shop? I need to replace my lifters because they’re ticking so I need to remove the heads but I don’t know if I have to take them to a machine shop.
@@michaelcochetti3049 its recommended so that the heads are flat and if there are any imperfections the machine shop will take off. Plus, more peace of mind imo
@@cristianquinones1249 sorry if i asked dump questions. If the heads are taken to the shop and flatted by any machine work, what about the block surfuce? Should we keep them consistent if we can? How do we know if the block surface is fine while the heads are perfectly falt? Thank you in advance
@@vampirel1983 You won't know unless you take the block in as well but being that the block is cast iron(?) I believe and the heads are aluminum it's much more likely for the heads to develop a warp/imperfection than the block.
Reviewing your video for head gasket process, I notice something that might help you which I learned when I did intake manifold gaskets a few years ago. When the wiring harness is hanging in the way of the intake - I used bungee cords to pull it out of the way and it worked great. It was hovering above the engine and I had plenty of clearance for the manifold.
This is an excellent video! Extremely easy to follow along. I am getting wiffs of coolant on my 03 pickup I purchased a week ago. I feel this is in my future, stopped by to see the “ease” of this. Your video gives me great confidence in doing a head job now. THANK YOU
My wife does my head jobs for me and I return the favor at times too. 🤙🤓
I just had to replace my radiator in my 06. Pretty common for the plastic end tank on the radiators to crack near the driver side coolant hose. Was smelling coolant for a long while before it completely failed and produced coolant showers.
Went to 4 different web sites on torque spec and got 4 different answers. Thanks for the video!
I still am stumped on rocker arm torque
@@Junky_garage 22 ft pounds
That was by far the best repair video I've ever seen.
Awesome job. Really appreciate it. Well laid out this is the next step on my suburban. Be blessed guys. Richard Iowa.
I love how you don’t have to mess with the timing chain on over head valve engines
Looks a bit intimidating but I like cm taking into a challenge and thanks to you guys I think I can pull this off.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I got mine apart in 3 hours but I have a broken collarbone and a couple ribs 🤕
Use speedmaster head studs for re-assembly. They are re-usable, and they torque
down like standard bolts. Change the leaking oil pressure sender at the back, BEFORE
installing intake manifold. Cut the extension threads off the 10mm coil mounts on the
ones near the fire wall, the bolt will be easier to install.
That’s probbaly the best trick I’ve seen with the extension with the hammer for the clutch fan
Update***
Again, Thanks for making this video, it really helped me out!
This video helped me out a lot but I had 1/64 the luck you had. Thanks for making this video. Took about 15 hours. I snapped the heads off all the exhaust bolts, had to sawzall 1 of 3 exhaust bolts to get the passenger exhaust manifold off(no possible to get the driver side manifold off, dip stick housing thing came right off after I unbolted it from the head (still dont know how I'm getting that out), my coolant cross over ( which went under the intake manifold and to the back of the motor) crumbled to pieces, the knock sensors turned to dust. I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3l 150,850 miles.
Got the motor cleaned up and all back together, runs great. I used enginetech remanufactured 862 heads, new head bolts, miele multilayer steel head gasket, updated throttle body gaskets and replaced a lot of other parts
Mike S wow
Mike. Sounds like you're from New York.. Or at least the truck is...
Haha I was looking for this comment. They made it look easy and didn't talk about how bridle the bolts are on this
What happens during the rocker assembly install? Is there a torque spec? I feel like that’s an important step that’s sort of skimmed over
I’m 15 years old and with this video I was able to fix my gaskets I was really worried I had a crack in my block because of so many burnouts
Brother! Burnouts hurt nothing. And they clear the mind. Just don’t go full mustang when you’re doing burnouts.
This gave me motivation thank u guys
This video was so instructional. That if I had the time I feel I could do this myself. 👏🏿
My twin brother has this truck, he says that the instructional video is amazing but the music doesn’t make the work any less intimidating.
I was always told to put the pushrods back in the same spot. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. but when I've helped people out, they've always stuck them in a piece of cardboard and number them
So much work to get to 1 part x.x Gata respect the real mechanics out there like these guys. I refuse to take my vehicles into shops because i don't trust lazy people, would rather just eat shit and do it myself.
About to start mine on my 2000 suburban its misfiring barely running but loses water out tailpipe so about to put two new heads on and see how she runs afterwards.
How did it go ??
Amazing video. You're a great instructor. Gonna attempt this soon when I get the time
Just did the passenger side got it back together realized the driver side has a slight leak underneath the head like looks like somebody took a oil rag squeeze the exhaust out and wiped it under the head would it be ok so replace that side too it took 8 hours on one side I don’t really wanna do it again I’ve added blue devil head gasket stop leak and before we did the passenger side the rpm’s jumped back and forth hard by 100 now u really have to stare at the rpm gage to notice horse power it good to drives smooth runs smooth
I got a 03 Yukon with the 5.3. I was thinking today that I would take it to a shop to have new gaskets installed + oil/coolant changes.
After watching this video I honestly think I could pull this off on my own as long as
1) I am patient (I tend to ruin stuff when I rush)
2) Good weather (I'll be in my driveway)
And 3) I have the proper tools (I'll need a torque wrench and that fuel line tool)
How did the job go? Did you attempt it?
Just be careful those head bolts tend to break. Now I'm scared to even mess with mine if it goes. I replaced my whole motor cause a bolt broke below the deck
Do you need a tune up after installing new cylinders heads? Even if they have the same AFR , would you still need a tune since it’s a new cylinder head with a different compression rate or , you can just swap the cylinder head an it be perfectly fine?
One thing I’m going to add is mark your pushrods they HAVE TO GO BACK in the same place especially if you have some miles on the rig they all will have wear patterns and it would be very beneficial they go back right where they came from
Man thank you so much I dint know how to take off everything and put back to place a freez plug tutorial next 😅
This was an amazing video, I have a 2005 Chevy avalanche that needs this type of work unfortunately I'm not that mechanically inclined, changing oil changing batteries spark plugs filters those things I can do but it seems these boys are top-notch 👍🏾, I think my best bet is just to buy another engine 🤣🤣🤣, and swallow the bullet on the labor cost 😲
Dang you all made it look so easy! Great Job and thanks for sharing!!
Awesome video… my only reason to look at a additional video is because I wouldn’t know about securing the rocker arms correctly. 🥴
I'm working on my 08' 5.3 suburban with DOD... I took off all the spark plugs from the driver side and they were all wet with oil. And there is oil leaking on the front driver side of the head between the block and the head where cylinder #1 is at.
And my oil pressure was at 20psi and lower while i was running it
What a great and informative video. Appreciate your guys’ time in making this awesome video.
when placing the valves back on did you have to reset the gap?
I was looking to see how you guys address the coolant on the head bolts holes, also how to do the valve lash.
Brother you saved me on this video!! Thank you! Next project!!!
Do you have to rotate engine to torque down the rocker arms or not I'm no sure
When u toqure the rockers what is the spec on them
Simple and to the point no extra BS thank you
How much do you tighten down the rockers? That was the only part I really needed info for
22 ft lb
I got my head gaskets and everything replaced and that all worked out great but you forgot to mention that the rockers need special adjusting when you put them back in and I didn’t do that and now my rockers sound like shit
Howd u fix it?!
Thanks. This will help me a lot.I'm just wondering about intake gasket.you guys didn't mention it.
Soo what did you do to clean up the old gasket material on the block
use a razor blade and try not to score the gasket surface so the new gasket will seal correctly and not leak.
What works for me is to tie a strap on the exhaust manifold to the wheel it will separate from the engine & you'll be able to remove the head 😁😀
By turning the wheel it pulls it away? Is that what you are saying?
what ft/lbs did you tighten the rocker arm bolts to? is there any valve lash adjustment?
I've always made good time on these jobs but damn! You guys are fast! Nice video
What did you clean the block surface with?
Excellent job. Thank you so much for this video. It helped a lot
Very good video, want to do my sierra , butblooks a lil intimidating.
Same 😂😂 just gotta have the tools and follow the steps
Very good video, going to do it on my truck. Have done all the maintenance on it. Should be straightforward, thank you guys for this great video 💯
I'm stupid but I'm about to have to do this Job. Is there no valve lash to set or just torque the bolts to some kind of ftlb
Any recommendations for a broken spark plug in the cylinder head? Should i remove the head to try getting it out? Its the first one on the driver side
Thanks for the video. How did you prep the block?
Wow I replace head gaste in a Camry that was a job this LS engine is super easy maybe the only problem is you have broken bolts in the exhaust manifolds. But you guys did and awesome job in the truck and the video. Thank you very much but I don’t see any beer through the whole process 😂😂
Anything else yall reccomend replacing "while you are there?" I'm thinking knock sensors and harness. Anything else?
How much did u guys charge for the head gasket job?
Great video brother! Ty. I got my heads off yesterday and sent them off to be inspected.
Quick question: I mixed up my push rods. Is that an issue? I was told to put them back in the same spot.
My head bolts are the long ones when I tired to drop the head bolts the back ones next too fire wall will not go back in they hit fire wall any suggestions on too get these head bolts with ease any help ill appreciate it
How much do you torque down the rocker arm bolts to?
Good question.
In hope someone answers this.
Excellent video, gave me a good idea what to expect if I were to take on the project as I have a bad lifter. I will add that the little melody in the background is not really helpful imo. Ciao
Hey can I still access head gaskets without removing alternator, belt and and exhaust bolts
Do yourself a favor and take lots of pics. It makes reassembly much easier. Great vid guys.
You guys made it look easy great work 👍
Had a 2005 aka 2004 built Silverado, till the head gasket blew on me April Fools Day!~ Only 167,000 Miles, but got it with 57K miles in 2007 from my brother.
Caused the power steering & braking system to fail at the same time, happened while driving and ended up in a cemetery easement.
Will this be similar for 2009 year with 5.3L Flex AFM motor? I have a broken engine, maybe just a bar head gasket. I want to remove and delete the AFM also. Can I do that under my carport? Thanks!
@@thesetruths1404 for the most part yes
Nicely done. Thank you.
So when did we talk about the intake gaskets? Thanks for the video!
Excellent vedio I have to do the same to my suburban it has lifter noise badly i don't have miss fire or lost of oil pressure or no lost of power is lifters people tell me oil pressure is perfect i can i chech or find out if is really lifters can you boy's help out thank you very much.
this was great, however there was only one really big issue that I came across. The Buick Rainier/Chevy Trail blazer have this same engine. The compartment is much smaller and working around the exhaust manifold is a huge pain. A huge exercise in patience.
Did you also replace the intake gaskets?
It’s a good idea to replace the oil pressure sending unit & filter while the intake is off.
Why? Just curious
what’re the torque specs for the rocker arms?
Did everything in the video hooked it back up now it don’t have no spark any suggestions
What do you torque the rocker arm bolts to?
What about rocker lash adjustment
I finally decided to start mine after 4 months of my baby just sitting there sad smh i hope 🤞🏽 its the issue..
Great vid !! BTW what caused the blown head gasket ?
Replace those knock sensors while you're at it.
And the valley pan gasket too!
Such a good video. 3rd time using it now lol! Great job guys, thanks!!
Wish I knew what the name of that part is that he says you Need to not lose.He shows the part at 12:49 into the video. I am replacing the heads and I do not have those parts on my 2009 Chevy 1500 5.3 L. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
When you put rocker arms in did ya torque them ? If so how much and do ya have to rotate the cam or just torque em all down
the Haynes manual shows to rotate the cam, and torque to specific on the intake stroke if I remember, its been a long time since I did mine, should be lots of tutorials on here for it
Its only leaking on one side , from running straight water im assuming , i dont think its ever been overheated , wonder if i can get away with just replacing the head gasket on one side ? It still runs great , pisses like a horse at the passengers side head gasket bottom side only im assuming ,right above the motor mount 1" long leak ..
you sure it's not a freeze plug in the block?
I get this was done a long time ago, but if you guys are still around, I did this job got everything back together, I started the engine but it immediately stalled. Did some research, and found a number of things it could be, but what would you guys think is a possible issue?
This engine before I remove the heads should I put tdc marks
so no adjustments on rocker arms just tighten down?
Great job guys... ty for sharing i learned a lot from ur video
My turn now 😂
Hi I have a 2005 Sierra v8 5.3L head small leak on driver side head did you resurface head or just put the head gasket not sure if I need to do that . Looking forward thank you
Looks like you didn't remove water pump correct?
Great job explaining. I think I am going to have to do this soon. I am slowly losing coolant and I think my truck has the Castec 706 faulty heads. Going to have to replace both heads. Just curious how many miles on the truck. Thx
Do it as soon as you can. Small leaks turn into big leaks. Big leaks turn into overheating.
224,000
What kind of heads do you put to replace the 706? I have a 2005 Tahoe with that heads and i think the head gasket is not good, so I want to replace the heads too
@@gasketmasters Learned that one the hard way, changed the water pump, fixed it for a bit, then coolant came pouring from my exhaust
