There was a student in a fellow teacher's class in my grade. I saw him often as our grade did things together. I always saw him grumpy, sad, discouraged and hurting others. He switched to another fellow teacher and I saw him bloom! She expected the best of him, held him accountable for his wrong actions, but she built a relationship with him and celebrated him instead of belittled him. I saw him be happy and enjoy school for the first time in several years! I always saw him smiling after he built a relationship with his teacher.

Yes! Many kids feel INVISIBLE, especially when they are not "high performers" in the classroom.
I had a 2nd grade student tell me, "YOU ALWAYS MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I'M HERE"! I was blown away.
I was just visiting the class for my daughter's birthday party. But I always took the time to greet my daughter's classmates, no matter where I saw them.
The previous year, I was doing my teaching observation in this young girl's class. I had selected her for my "child study" assignment, I think because she was a struggling student (can't remember well...it was 10+years ago).
I mostly observed this girl (without her knowing), and engaged in only a few activities with her. But I remember she felt embarrassed or ashamed because she was “different” than the others.....she was left-handed. Well, as a kid, one summer, I happened to spend it, writing with my left-hand, just because I thought..."you never know if your other hand gets injured".... As soon as she shared this with me, I took a moment to compliment her and I showed her how "cool" it was to write with your left hand. She was shocked and seemed pleased to not "be alone" as a lefty. Little did I know that my few encounters with her, meant everything to her. Yes, relationships matter, and I wasn't a teacher. But as an adult, I gave the student attention and respect.
Of note, I recall how her classmates would receive rewards for answering questions correctly. This young girl commented to me one day that she wasn’t even going to try to answer questions because she was never going to get a reward…it left me rethinking the reward system...
As I observed this young girl in first grade, I immediately noticed that she had a fascinating talent that was never addressed in school. She was an absolutely amazing artist. Students had to write a paragraph and draw about it. The details that were put in her drawings were incredible. We all have a talent and not everyone is “book-smart”. But we can highlight every kid’s talent as we build relationships with them.

My favourite quote is "A child doesn't care what you know, until they know that you care." My kids and I laugh SO often when we share stories about each other's lives. I tell them mostly good/funny things that happen to me, but sometimes I'll also let them know when I am not feeling wonderful. This shows them how they can cope with those moments. Admin always sends me the children they know need some love before they can progress. This year's little one is proving to be a little more difficult to reach than others I have had, but I am determined to make it work. I have an amazing Education Assistant I have worked with for a few years now and we figure that as a team we will reach him. It is lovely to "meet" someone with the same depth of passion for these kids and the teaching profession. I'm in my 35th year of teaching and I've seen teachers become jaded and bitter after 5 or 6 years. Very sad.

Yes!!! Laugh with them!!!! This is amazing that after 35 years you still find a way to reach every child. My hat is off to you! Thank you for your comment! ((Hugs))

I have a class assignment which requires us to find a classroom management video and pick out the strengths and weaknesses of that video. GIRL I CANNOT FIND ANY WEAKNESSES! Your videos are so incredibly helpful and I found myself tearing up a little about your story of the child with a troubled past. Thank you so much for your series and I'm so glad I found you!

I was so calm today and present with this student who has challenges today. I just wanted to be the person he needed. So thank you. You made a difference in my life and a young person!!! Rock on!

I have taught many, many years and I have seen every kind of child you can imagine, you are so right about building those relationships. I have had kids like the student you were speaking of, it is heartbreaking, I have had kids in the foster system, etc. and they get attached to you and then they are gone, I teared up listening to you. I truly believe God does place those kids who are meant for you to meet, even if it is for a short time,

Miss May, you radiate with light and love! I'm nearing the end of my student teaching right now, and I wish I had a mentor like you. My student teaching experience has been a roller coaster ride, to say the least. Your story at the end of this really touched me. I've experienced those students. It inspires me that even amidst all that stress, you found a way to love him. Sometimes I get so caught up in the stress of what has to be done that I lose sight of what's important - influencing the students in a positive way. I will definitely keep in touch with your videos, because your ideas are wonderful to learn from. From Las Vegas, thank you for your amazing service to the world.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! This was a rough start to the year. I am a homeschooler but this was my first year with an additional kid joining homeschool with our family this year. It was definitely an unexpected adjustment. There were moments where I wanted to throw in the towel but I knew I was on the Lord’s assignment, and with all the 2020 issues, this family really needed me. I was struggling with (the lack of behavior management training) and knew I needed the Lord to show me what needed to be done before control of the rest of the year would float away... and the Lord led me to your channel! You have been such a blessing and this particular video helped confirm for me the adjustments necessary to help love on my bonus kid. I am blessed to see fruit coming already. Thank you for being 💯and being faithful with posting videos on what the Lord put on your heart so we can learn how to be there for our kids and students. Be blessed!

I was actually working on my final for a Human Relations Training course I was taking and was answering one of the Final Exam questions, which was: What would you tell a new teacher about building human relationships? and THIS video was playing. PERFECT!!!! Along with my answer to the question, I included the link to this video and mentioned how perfect it was and that I would encourage a new teacher to watch it. My instructor enjoyed your video as well and said that she would share it in the next session of her Human Relations Training course. Thanks for being a BLESSING to all!

Hey Miss May (AKA) my twin spirit!! 👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😭 these emojis represent the emotions that your video took me through early this Saturday morning. Relationship building is the key to a successful classroom. We are the ones who open up a whoke new world for these babies! It is our ministry! We should not seek to change how God made them but to bring out all those great and wonderful things that put in them. We are part of developing their spark in life, their love for others. It's amazing to see the love that you pour into students manifest in their attitudes, their behaviors. Not only at school but at home. I have had so many parents thank me and tell me stories of the change they see in their child. Just This week I had a parent who emailed me crying out for help because she and her husband were having issues with their daughter at home.....Miss May you are a God Sent spirit!!

Thank you for the reminders. I am gonna bring back lunch with the teacher. I do think it is okay for a teacher to not have lunch with students if it is not possible. Some teachers need to use their lunch time to prepare/plan because they have to pick up their own kids after school. I have done lunch with the teacher within the month. It is fun and is one way to create community with your students.

But today I found your channel by searching for organization tips on school supplies and saw your video of the "Teaching tool box" (great video) so I decided to watch more of your videos. And I have to say you are an AWESOME teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher but other things came up and it did not happen. So once again i started thinking of becoming a teacher. And after watching your videos, I am now more motivated in becoming one. I seen other teachers' video blogs but none as inspirational as yours. Keep being awesome. Wow! You made me cry. You are an amazing teacher! When I become a teacher in a couple of years, I want to be like you. As someone who grew up in a very abusive home (in more ways than one), I want to be the person who cares, listens, and loves on my students. Thank you for making a difference!

+Alexandra Fenison you're making me want to cry. I'm so sorry to hear about your abuse that you lived with. This is why I teach the way I do and create classrooms the way I do. For this simple reason. We don't know what these children are dealing with at home. You're going to a FAB teacher! Keep working hard sunshine! ((Hugs))

Girl...you got me with your intro screen!! So true!! My profession is Elementary Ed/Early Childhood Ed. I taught briefly in the public school system, then once my gems were born, I homeschooled them all the way to University. My daughter achieved a degree in English and is now a fifth grade teacher in a private school (my heart swells). She asked me last year (2020-2021) to be her assistant; I am an assistant to two fifth grade classrooms, and it was HARD at first, but grew to love what I do. Now, she has asked me to be her co-teacher and I couldn't be more over the moon about it. Thank you for putting out your videos, they are super helpful and fun to watch, and I'm getting loads of ideas on what to do in the classroom after not being in a "true" classroom for over 25 years. So excited to begin this next year with my sweet gem of a daughter!!

I want to say I wasn't prepared to cry at this video since it was assigned for my Instructional Strategies class, but that would be a lie. I love your passion for being there for these kids beyond just teaching them and knowing how seriously other teachers take their relationships with their kids as a future teacher and a mother makes me feel so comfortable going into the field and sending my kids to school every day. The story at the end though made me ugly cry much harder than I expected though, lol. Thank you for sharing.

I'm not becoming a teacher and I find these hints helpful! Obviously, not all of them would apply to my future career as a Child Life Specialist but some of them were very helpful! Also, wouldn't it be cool if you saw that kid again one day? One thing I always knew is that it's ok to be strict and harsh/hard but do it because YOU care about the kid(s) not to just be mean or take advantage.
