I am a 29 year secondary teacher. My 22-year-old daughter is a soon-to-be middle-level educator. I wish I could have received some of your instruction long ago. I shared your videos with my daughter and will share them with secondary colleagues. Much of what you teach can be modified for older kids. May God bless you, and I pray that you can make some money off of this. Teachers need teacher life coaches. You are fun to listen to. :) Two thumbs up!
You are a BEAST! Thank you so much for the video. Just by the way, you are not going UNNOTICED! I am currently going through an Alternative Teacher Certification Program and they are using your videos for teaching us in our classes to be teachers.
Your class management tips WORK! We just completed or first week of school and have been practicing, modeling, re-modeling etc.! It's soo amazing! My first year of teaching was so chaotic but this year is the total opposite!...GREAT classroom management is truly KEY! 🔑
Yes it is. I’m so glad the tips helped you. Many blessings! ((Hugs))
Thank you so much for these helpful tips! I left school yesterday feeling terrible and today I implemented your strategy of using music for transitions. GAME CHANGER! Seriously, I felt so much better today and I think my students felt so much more successful. Thank you!
I hope you are still rocking along and feeling successful. Sending you LOTS of ((HUGS))
I’ve been teaching for 10 years now, it feels good to be doing the same of some of your routines and procedures in the classroom. Here’s a tap on your shoulder, Ms. May! Keep inspiring people. Thank you for sharing these awesome ideas. 💜
Another great video!! In my first few years of teaching, I truly struggled with transitions. But once I realized that I needed to be more consistent and practice practice practice.... It became so meaningful for the students! They are always so happy when they know what to do and what's expected, and they do it well. I love giving them that encouragement and saying, " Wow! You guys transitioned so well today!" Their little faces just light up. For my transitions between different subjects throughout the day I use theme songs from old TV shows. For example, if we're done with writing and need to move on to Science, I'll play the 'I Love Lucy' intro. They know by the time it stops, they should be ready with their Science notebook out, ready to work. I also love Mork & Mindy, Andy Griffith, and The Flintstones themes. The kids love them too ❤💛💜
+BlessedVirtuousTeacher the possibilities are endless! Also love using jeopardy tone. I'm going add theme of Andy Griffith! My momma's favorite show. Lol thank you for sharing. ((Hugs))
Currently binge watching your AWESOME videos! You have a calling and I thank God for you.
Thank you so much for your kind words. ((HUGS))
You are teacher after my own heart. :) I enjoy using music for transitions too! It's serves the dual purpose of integrating some of my culture while transitioning. I love how the use of music creates a sense of urgency and the pride my students feel when they "beat the music" and are ready for the next learning activity. I also celebrate their successes (cleaning up well, completing tasks, showing readiness...) so they don't rush through due to the sense of urgency and not do the task well. I love this, Miss May! The need for practicing cannot be overemphasized.
+The Teachers' Tribe practicing is sooooooooo important!!! ((Hugs))
Thank you for your positive voice and very helpful tips. I have been teaching 15 years and I still learned a lot from your videos.
Love ya, T! I think transitions are so hard for many teachers. I'm so glad to see you doing this video. It's super helpful Great job as always :)
You seem very hands on and you obviously understand the relationship you have to have with facilitating their jounrey during the day! I love it! Time to learn some classroom tools I can use
Thank you! I am a leaner English and future teacher; I need that to communicate better in a classroom.
It will become even better with time. ((HUGS))
I use that same toy story song too! I have been using it for 3 years now, and love it!
I absolutely LOVED using Toy Story! ((Hugs))
i wouldve loved u as a teacher! great personality hun!
Haha, I was thinking about doing a video about this, and then I saw your video on my home page. Although, I can gear mine toward high school students. I love using music. I had a colleague when I was starting out, that hated that I played music in my class. However, I noticed that it always helped with my overall classroom environment and student dynamics. I also agree with you about the practice and repetition concerning the expectations. Great video and tips!
+Bond with James thank you so much! Music definitely creates an overall classroom environment and student dynamics. You're so right!! Thank you for watching!! ((Hugs))
Did you make a video geared toward high school kids? I couldn't find one on your page.
This is the part I fail. I’m so ready to crash course on your videos!!
YAY! Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
Thanks for sharing your strategy for transitions. This is so relevant - even in middle school. Awesome video, Miss May.
+budezone you're so very welcome! Thanks for stopping by. ((Hugs))
I love your expectations for your class! Yay for that! Set the bar high and help them meet your expectations. 👍
Hello, Miss May! I love the impact music makes in the classroom! One of the transitions I use music for is coming in from recess. I like to play calming music so they can start to settle down. I appreciate the playlist! Sometimes I get in a rut and need a change!
Hope your computer situation is improving! Loving your shirt! My teacher planner has the same wordle! :-)
+Becky May awesome! Thank you for stopping by. ((Hugs))
#brilliant! I'm going to do this next year. Promethean board...you're fancy!
+Darin Nakakihara I think you would love it! The promethean board is pretty fancy. Lol ((hugs)) friend
Darin Nakakihara I just checked out your channel. I like it very much. Thanks, Miss May for creating this outstanding community.
Thanks for sharing all your ideas Miss May. I love to use music for procedures as well. I have a Good morning song, a transition song, a line up song, a game song and a line up song. Yes you have to teach it and model it. I also use visuals and a checklist that I put up on the SMARTboard and tick off everything that has been achieved and fix anything that hasn't happen. Great video!
Thanks Dan!!! Modeling is so key in this that's for sure! I will definitely be looking using your music. That's for sure!! ((Hugs))
When I was a student teacher as a high schooler, my mentor teacher used music to transition her first grade kiddos as well & she loved doing that! Also, I just saw your p.o box is located in Cypress! I'm also in Cypress! 🤗 I'm so glad i am subscribed to a local teacher. I love watching even though I'm not a teacher yet. Thanks for the video! 😃
I like gathering together and talking about with the kids what worked and what didn't to fix issues as a group.
I just came across your channel! #Awesome! The song, "Good Morning" has been a morning staple in my family for years! Now that I am a Pre-K teacher, I use it to get them excited about the day! Keep up the great work!
+Tiffany Jenkins that’s my jam!!!! Thank you for your support!! ((Hugs))
Love this suggestion! I think I'll modify it slightly to include a visual cue (song plus directions displayed while the music plays). Thanks for the great idea! This will be helpful for me when I'm student teaching this upcoming spring!
Enjoy your experience! ((Hugs))
I love to use music for transitions! It's amazing how well it works and SAVES your voice! Thank you for sharing! ❤️ and hugs!!!
((Hugs))
Awesome! Wondering if you have substitutes use the songs for transitions? If so how do you explain all of that in your plans for them??
I was thinking the same thing! Also, how do they have access to the songs?
Exactly what I have been thinking about implementing this school year. Thanks for the tips and tricks! :)
Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
Your ideas are amizing. In September I am going to implement these ideas in the classroom(kindergarten). Thanks❤
I can't live without your videos!
+Julie Hall awwwwwww...thank you so much!!! ((Hugs))
Sounds like you read first days of school harry Wong good job 👏🏽
+Whitakers Way you bet I did! ((HUGS))
I’m teaching first grade for the first time and I’ve made a lot of mistakes with management. Thanks for these videos!!! Planning for next year!
We have all made them. It's about learning from them and getting better every year. You got this! ((Hugs))💛
Currently binge watching your videos

Thank you for an amazing video. It was so helpful. You are a blessing and an inspiration. I have learned so much from you.
Thank you so much for watching. I appreciate it! ((Hugs))
Your so cute I love how sweet your voice is and tone :)
+Whitakers Way awwww thank you so much! Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
I am a new teacher. I am so grateful for your videos right now. Could you maybe give us a list of procedures we should think through?
Thank you so much! I will do my best. (( HUGS))
Going into my first year teaching and just ran across your channel. I had been searching for black female teachers to watch. Anyway, I already planned to make music a big part of my classroom for transitions, coming in and leaving, and brain breaks. Do you ever find that your kids get bored with the same song all year? Do you ever change the songs you use?
Yes I mention that I change my songs every three months. (( Hugs ))
What are your logical consequences for students who won’t comply? Like talking instead of transitioning. I stop and start over from the beginning but those students who are following directions often have to go through the procedure again when they clearly know it. Thank you!
THANK YOU FRIEND! YOUR WISDOM IS APPRECIATED. MRS. MAC :)
Yay I love watching your videos! You show so much positivity!!
+The Classroom Palette thank you so much!! ((Hugs))
Great video... I teach pre-k and we use singing for all transition and it totally work!!!! By the way ❤️ the shirt!!!
I absolutely LOVE music for transitions. My shirt is from Erin Condren. Thank you so much!! ((Hugs))
Gangsta lean 😂😂😂
These videos are very helpful, thanks
You are so amazing, I am a student teacher at a university in South Africa, I am learning a lot. The saving of the voice part is helpful. I have been talking a lot and my voice getting husky.
Awwww, I appreciate you. Thank you so much for watching. Save that voice and use music. ((HUGS))
Hi. Very informative videos! Can you post the song list? I didn't see it in the description. Thank you for sharing such thoughtful, insightful and necessary content.
Thank you so much. Any appropriate kids song can be used. I listed a few of my favs just now. Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
I would love to see your "learning spot" and "movie area"! Thank you for the tips!
You are so welcome! ((HUGS))
Thank you so much, I am doing my students teaching and I already had my firs t observation and one of the thing that my supervisor told me to work is in transitions from the table to the meeting area. I will pick up a song to practice with the students
I really appreciate that you take the time to gives the tips.
+keylacortez1 you are so very welcome! Music is key for transitions I believe! Thank you for stopping by! ((Hugs))
Miss May you are my absolute favorite , I am studying at NUW university in South-Africa and your videos have been used so much in our curriculum. I love it! do you have a face book page?
You look so refresehed. I pray u have a great school year
+msfantasy2013 thank you for that. I've had a few down days but I must keep pressing on. ((Hugs))
This is wonderful! I love your shirt too :)
Thank you so much! The shirt is an Erin Condren shirt. ((HUGS))
Thanks for the song suggestions.
+Donna Wright's no problem! ((Hugs))
Thank you SO much! I’m about to start my second year as a 1st grade teacher and am struggling with transitioning. This has helped me SO much with pre-planning!
Yay!!! This makes me smile BIG! Have a blessed school year! ((Hugs))
This is a great idea! I think I'm gonna give it a try. Thanks! 😘
+V Jules it's amazing!! Doesn't hurt to try. ((Hugs))
Awesome! You teach first grade ❤️🍎 I thought you were a kindergarten teacher✨ Great transitions😊😊
You are the teacher I wish I had in first grade! 💗
Awwwwwww, thank you! ((Hugs))
Thanks so much for this! I would love to know more about how you choose songs. :) Also, do you access your music via your computer and blue tooth speaker? Or how?
Awesome as always!
+Real Rap With The Reynolds thanks Reynold's! Always appreciate your support. ((Hugs))
Love your channel future teacher over here!
LOVE...YOUR .....VLOGS!
Thank you so very. ((HUGS))
Hi Miss May. I'm having a difficult year this year. I'm so shocked that it's gotten this bad that I'm on RUclips researching for ways and ideas😭. I think it's ego and pride. I keep feeling like, what the heck! I've been teaching for fifteen years, why am I still struggling? My kids just won't be quiet! I've tried so many strategies; even all the ones you've mentioned. Now I'm questioning myself that maybe teaching is just not my calling after all; and that thought makes me depress. Any advice?
~Confused
I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. How do you store the songs that you use daily. Are they on your desktop, in a folder, use Google etc.?
Yaaayyyyy! Miss May!
((Hugs))
I wish Miss May was MY teacher!!!!!
You are so sweet and kind. ((Hugs))
I loved this video and I'm going to use the musical transitions! I just want to know how, or where, to keep the songs so you have quick access to play them and do they play on the loud speakers in your ceiling, or just from your computer speakers? I hope you understand my question....I mean are the songs on your computer desk top? I guess I must get familiar with Spotify and then maybe I'll know. I'm just thinking of iTunes and how long it takes to load ...(but I know you are not using that!)
+Annette Martinez I have loud wireless speakers in my ceiling. I just play the songs from my Spotify account. You can also find the songs on RUclips. ((Hugs))
Love all of your videos!
Thank you so very much! I appreciate you! ((HUGS))
One FAB Teacher Do you have a video on how you make your centers?
awesome video!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! What about lining up for lunch/specialist lessons (PE, Music etc)?
We always line up in number order everywhere. ((HUGS))
Ms. May can you direct me to the video where you talk about early finishers. Thank you.
Thank you God Bless You
I am getting ready to start my first year of teaching, and I will be teaching firsties too! I LOVE watching your channel. I will have a promethean board as well... do you play your music through that? Do you have the music set to a timer? I'm just wondering about the logistics of playing the music. I so want to use this but am having a hard time wrapping my head around getting the music playing through out the day. THANKS! ((HUGS))
+Lisa Wright my laptop can connect and disconnect to my laptop. However I have wireless speakers in my ceiling so I just play a song from my Spotify account on my laptop. No timer set. In the beginning it takes about 30 seconds. The more they become use to it the faster they become. ((Hugs))
Thank u for the video ms. May
You are so welcome. Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
Love your shirt! Where did you purchase it? Great video! Blessings
Thank you! It was sent to me from Erin Condren. ((Hugs))
When you finish teaching a small group, do you move over to your computer each time to play the transition song? Or do you play the songs from your phone? Thank you SO much for your videos!!!
Quick question. Love your approach so I need a suggestion. What would your first step be when you have a student on the carpet who plays with shoes, calls out, talks to friends, touches other kids all the time. I speak to her about it and then turn to write on chart paper and she does it again while looking at me.
I would first have her practice during recess for a bit. Or have a retrace moment and practice as a class and have her model the right way to listen on the carpet. Maybe she needs to practice during some recess time, or a fun time she really enjoys (math tubs, stations) sometimes it’s something beyond our control. ((Hugs))
One FAB Teacher thank you. I’m trying to pick my battles. Somethings I think she lacks the maturity to control. I’ve been focusing on the rudeness and ignoring the rest.
Hi. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing. Where is your list of songs?
I will add the list to this video today. My apologies. ((HUGS))
won't introducing all the songs confuse the students on which procedure should be done? or should I introduce each song with its procedure separately over a certain time span?
Ms. May, I love your videos. Do you have a list of your songs?
Thank you, I have a few examples in the description box. ((Hugs))
Do u find chimes or a bell would work as good as music, I'm a sub in a long term position and I'm a little worried to introduce music because my days have been pretty chaotic and I'm wondering if theses second graders wouldn't be able to handle the music.
love that I found a fellow firstie teacher who loves Jesus.
+Kaitlin Jones Amen! Without him we are nothing! Lord I love you! (( H U G S ))
What do you use to play the music? I like this idea, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Thank you!
I place my music on my google slides. I have several videos on Google Slides. ((HUGS))
Ma.May can you do a video on what to expect from a teachers aide or paraprofessional?
Sure! I'll put that on my list! ((HUGS))
Hi great ideas 😊 What do you play the music on ?
My Google slides. ((Hugs))
How do you organize your transitions? I have created a word doc and put the links on that. There must be an easier way. They learned to clean up quickly when I played the Clean Up song
What do you play your music on? Do you have your phone near you at all times? On a computer that you have to walk over to when you want to play a song? I have trouble getting to my music... Please share!
Can this work for two year olds?
LOVE the transition song idea.
how do i access your song lists?
Do you ever let the kids listen to the song longer than 30 seconds if they have all made the transition and request to listen to the song longer? I want to try songs for transitions but don't know how I should address requests to play the whole song.
Yes in the beginning when we are just now learning how to transition. Every once in awhile we will listen to the whole song. ((Hugs))
What’s the average time for a student to move from one level to another and get a star? A week? More? Less?
It’s totally up to you. ((Hugs))
Hi! Thanks for all the tips! Can you give some ideas on what songs do you use?
What do you do when you have a substitute??
Now everything is right there in my Google slides. I have videos about my googles slides. Google slides are a GAME-CHANGER!! Click below and many ((HUGS))

Hi, Ms. May! What exactly do you mean by "learning spots"? Thank you so much for your videos! They are SO helpful!
Their learning spot is where they sit when I'm teaching a whole group lesson to them. ((HUGS))
So would this be an assigned seat at carpet? I'm going into my second year of teaching and I'm very open to new ideas. I'm trying to find additional strategies to implement for the upcoming school year so I can help my students be their best selves. Your videos are very helpful and I am learning so much. Thank you!
May I link to your video for a grant project that I am doing for Texas A&M University, please? If so, how would you prefer it to be cited?
Do you have a list of common classroom jobs?
Do you announce that you are going to play the song, or do you just play it?
No, that's the whole point. You want to use your teacher voice as less as possible. Once they hear a particular song they just know what to do. ((HUGS))
Yay
+Jayana May love you! ((Hugs))
I wish you would share the 5 songs you use.
Their located in the description box. ((Hugs))
