      Mac is a closed ecosystem
It's easier for them and program developers to optimise/integrate programs very well
But they take our full freedom, that sucks a big time
It's all about freedom vs comfort

Well, is not all that rosy on the Mac side. I recently returned a 14-inch M3 Pro Mac Book Pro. Some of the programs I used were too slow or did not run. Moreover, that unified memory is not as good as everybody says, as I was shown the dreaded beach ball on more than one occasion. Windows is complicated, but so is Finder, I could not see any of my photos or listen to my music because I was insistently asked to connect to iCloud and upload my info.

I appreciate the honesty. I have made multiple videos talking about Mac's and it's very rare people talk about anything negative... because I agree, they aren't perfect. What kind of programs were you using, popular programs or niche stuff?

GeForce Now on Mac...You can play Cyberpunk at 4k/60 (and you should) with everything turned on with DLSS Performance. If you feel it's soft, press CMD+G > Filter > Sharpening (set to preference) and it looks incredible. Some may cry bout the cost, but if you want it all and you want the best Apple has to offer, GFN really gives it to you. Also, I'd recommend hard wiring (especially since you're at a desk).

Yeah that's rad you can do that! I mean it's tough because for that same price you can get 100 plus FPS 4K on a giant screen on a desktop. But you just don't get the versatility of the laptop either. Tough to pick the right thing. I think for now I like having the big workstation and then I'll probably get a little side laptop for productivity. But yeah if the budget ever allows that might be a fun way to go.

Your videos helped me a lot about the final decisions about what I need. Just perfect. So .. AMD Ryzen 9 7900x with RTX 3060 12 GB would be fine. Because I only use H.265 8-bit 4:2:0 (Fuji camera, DJI Pocket Osmo). Quick Sync or a MacBook would be better, but do you think I am doing a big mistake? Going to start into Resovle Studio, short videos, maybe upgrade / change to intel in 2-3 years. Main headache is a smooth & fast playback (thats called the swichting through the video while editing?)

Honestly, Even though I just built a beast of a computer I still use proxies which will make that machine rip through the files like butter. I'm not sure if you're familiar with making proxies I did a video on it a while back... It takes like just a couple minutes and the click of one button. As long as you use that it almost doesn't matter what computer you use. Having a decent video card will be very helpful though for adding effects so that's awesome.

Hello there! Thanks for comment. And yeah I know what you're going through. Honestly, the Max chips rip through video footage so well, it's such a treat. It's hard to go down to the Pro chip after you have experienced editing with those media engines. I would probably rather have the M3 Max than a M4 Pro personally. But it depends on you... the type of codecs you work with... how long you plan on keeping the computer...etc.
I'm not sure what you spent on the M3 Max, if you bought it on sale etc... you might look to buying it 2nd hand with Applecare as I'm sure people will be upgrading to the latest thing OR just buy the M4 Max when it comes out. Then you'll be set for quite awhile and the sting of the payment will lessen after a year or so lol.
Maybe what you should do though is return your Max and get the M4 Pro. You seem to be entertaining that idea and hey, it might be enough for you. Because of the footage I get from my Sony, I needed a Max chip, but it could be different for you. I hope you are able to make a decision you feel good about!

I think I may have shared this before, so at the risk of repeating myself (while supporting your algorithms): I've got the M3 Pro MBP 14 as my primary computer hooked up to an affordable Samsung 4K monitor (on that HUANUO monitor stand you recommended). The rest of the ecosystem is an iPhone 14 and a Series 9 watch, and they all share their toys nicely. For AAA gaming I built a VERY modest Windows gaming PC by adding an SSD, a bunch of RAM, and an RTX A2000 to a Dell OptiPlex 9020 (the GPU is worth more than the computer). And just for giggles I recently added a second SSD to it and loaded Linux Mint on it (because you can never have too many OSs).

Maybe it was just my machine, but I got a well reviewed HP Omen with great specs and enjoyed it for gaming but hated it for everything else. As a user of both and aside from the set up on windows, I am ok with either. I don't use a laptop Mac though (Macstudio), but I suspect you could get yourself a Thunderbolt or USB4 hub, connect everything to that and just have the one connection to put in to a laptop. I don't game, I also have an Android but I am ok transferring through a cable to my Macstudio if I need to. Shame that Android and Windows play with each other in a way that I imagine Iphone does with Mac OS and they won't do it with eachother, but hey, it's not the end of the world, I just plug my phone into a monitor and if it is on the same network my MX mouse seems able to transfer from one to another. I think that as much as there is something to be said for "ease of use", there are often ways around it. But as I said, I don't game, so, you know, that part really doesn't matter to me. Horses for courses and all that.

@@thesahdstudio well, I thought I would try the Macstudio after decades with windows (though I used a Mac at college in the late80s early 90s) because the GPU prices had gone mad and it was time to replace bits and pieces in my windows desktop. It performs mostly well, mine is the M1 so not as many graphics cores as I would like, which means some of the Resolve effects can be a challenge and would likely be much smoother on a 4080/AMD equivalent, but for what I do, it is mostly fine. I think like everyone its the size, the power demands and the silence that I love. It is quick so goodness knows how much quicker the M4 and beyond might be , which will really help with CPU production tasks. But overall I like it. I imagine the real question is, when it comes to replacement time would I go back to windows. I really think that is mostly price dependant. You can, as you know, put one together yourself, have the upgrade path option and parts choice and its not super hard. I just need them to be more efficient in terms of power and noise and I may go back. On the sound thing, I have a fiioK9 headphone/DAC amp feeding powered speakers and headphones ( a little over the top, have had a K5 and K7 but had a little spare money) and it works from a hub, so perhaps one of those might be an option if you return to a Mac and get a hub or even use them on your PC. As for monitors, I have two LG 24" ultrafines for the more colour sensitive work ( again, for what I do they are fine and they play with Macs thankfully) and a 27" Dell for timeline/browsing/main screen stuff but it is running off one of the ultrafines 2nd TB port ( this one is on all the time, the other ultrafine is for a clean feed when editing, never on apart from that) and the much discussed "scaling" problems aren't a thing. I would love a 5k monitor and an even more colour accurate, proper HDR one, but weirdly, I have just bought my first Ipad, the M4 pro, so hopefully I can use that as a reference, we shall see. Sometimes there is benefit from just hacking things together and trying to get the best of both, I still use a Windows laptop for example. I am old enough to know when there really where problems in tech and most of the modern ones are an inconienence and a fair bit of "why can't it just ...." but blimey, they are a lot less than they used to be. Sorry for the waffle. Have a fine day of it. Oh, what I would like to see on PC motherboards is more USB4/TB ports, the good thing about the studio is the 4 TB4 ports and the card reader as well as a couple of USB As for legacy stuff though I do think they could have upped the speed of those and the front USB Cs, that was pretty rubbish. Not a "deal breaker" though, just one of those "why couldn't they just" moments! Love the thing though, warts and all.

Interesting points and views on the video, nice one.
If you are interested in a normal laptop, the Snapdragon ones do seem very good on the battery usage, but note you can run in performance issues when using non native ARM applications because the emulation and translation involved and sometimes just complete compatibility problems with non ARM applications, also Qualcomm's graphic drivers can be quite messy as usual if you need something that relies on raster renderization. If you do need the battery usage efficiency, you can try waiting and looking at Intel's Lunar Lake that's launching around the last week of this month, it should have the power efficiency at low wattages whithout the compatibility issues with better graphics and graphics driver situation than the current Snapdragon Elite X platform.
If you don't need that longest battery usage while keeping very good performance at low power limits, I think there's some good options from current Intel and AMD CPUs.

@thesahdstudio I mean it seems more stable.. i have adjusted settings for updates. But it never seems to interfere with needing updates and yes very smooth and reliable day to day.

Spent most of the 90's and 00's working on macs and would always think it would be nice to go back, then reality hits. Either get a decent pc and be able to upgrade the gpu in a couple of years for two grand or get a studio with less power four four grand. Then apple put all there stuff through the apple check list, a proprietary cable 👍go out there way so it can't be serviced by the user 👍 over charge for upgrades 👍completely changed technology in a couple of years so people have to upgrade 👍. Now the best thing apple machines do is power consumption.

Hehe yeah I hear that. I don't regret my decision. I mean to be fair that Apple stuff gets support for years and the batteries seem to last as well (on the laptops)... but yeah, I like being able to fix/expand my computer if I ever need to. You waiting for the 50's GPU's or what? :)

You think they're designed to be obsolete eh?
