As a retired Master Chief Petty Officer I guess you had to live in the Navy during these times. This movie is one of my favorites... it really does depict how a sailor's life was then... when I enlisted at 19. I would do it all over again.
Master Chief, You bet. I'd do it again tomorrow. THOSE were the days. Thirty cents for a beer. I wore the blues for 36 years. Here's to ya, MCPO. Cheers. -- WestPac Bosun, Ret.

This accurately represents life in the Navy. I swear when I was stationed in Washington state I yelled at one of my junior sailors, "YOUR GOING TO HAVE A FUCKING BEER!!!"
Only it wasn't an independent movie. Made & released by Paramount, I believe. This was made back in the day when Hollywood actually made films for adults.
This film more than any other Navy movie caught the essence of some of the shitty, mundane and boring times your average sailor goes through and how the little things that break that monotony take on great importance.
This film encouraged me to join the navy. Very realistic. I must say this behavior had its down side but the memories man the memories. Funny. I knew guys just like this. I was a guy like this. Nicholson nails it.
Yep. 19 million, vets have been there. A new years eve memory. Bouncers tried to throw us out of the airmans club. It was as much fun for them as it was for us. A brawl out in the grass outside.
I loved this movie. I was in the Navy in the early 80s. I was in San Diego. No, I wouldn't do it again. It's a whole different world now and no doubt the Navy and the military as a whole has changed. Yes, I do relate to this movie.
I agree so would I do it again. This is how the Navy was back then.It was a simple life that I miss.I was stationed in Norfolk in the mid 70s for a little while and this is how it was.I can relate to this movie.
This movie and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest show what a great actor Jack is. Oh, and his small part as the town drunk/lawyer in Easy Rider wasn't to shabby either.
I was stationed in Gitmo, Cuba in the '80's and transferred from Public Works Dept. over to the Naval Base duty section. Went from wearing Greens to Whites as uniform of the day and wearing the SP armband, duty belt with a nightstick and a flashlight. Used this line a few times to break up scuffles and arguments with the fleet sailors. If said in the right tone and with a crazy smile and a laugh, it was usually effective in getting laughter and defusing the situation.
Jack Nicklaus nailed it. But All the actors were just as good! I think the actors of the seventies were genuine. The director's " just be yourself, don't act! act naturally. This movie hit it out the park!
Jacks been in so many films and I believe I watched most of them from the 60s till his last ones filmed and Last detail may be my favorite character he ever played.
Love the line “I’m gonna kick your ass around the block for drill, man” I have used that on my teen boy :). Phil Hendrie honors old lines like that with his genius talent and comedy, one of the funniest people ever imo Gotta get his BSP
This is essentially the same as the diner scene from Five Easy Pieces: Jack dealing with people who pointlessly follow 'rules". In both cases he explodes with fury, doesn't get what he wants, but gets something more by winning a moral victory.
Three of my uncle s were Navy Chiefs E G Conklin served 1939 to 64, Henry Ward 1942 to 1975 and Milt Hatchell 1950 to 1975. So I have a warm spot in my heart for this film. I was only ten when this film came out so I first saw it about twelve years later. Jack was on the edge of superstardom with Easy Rider and Five Easy pieces and subsequent films like Chinatown and One flew over the Cuckoos Nest. Jack and Randy Quaid are both excellent but the real standout for me is Otis Young he is a freak in revelation. I saw him in a couple episodes of Columbia around this time and he had a small part in Hollywood knights1979. I wish he made more movies!!!! Has the “Salty Seaman “ revised this film yet?
So my phone likes to change my words I saw Otis Young in episodes of Columbo. My favorite scenes are the one in the parking garage where they hoist a few beers had to be real nobody can play drunk that brilliantly. And in the motel room.

Yeah. Badass knows he's peaked in the Navy, and though he probably doesn't get screwed with much, he knows that he'd have difficulty fitting into civilian life. Mule still might have a way out, but the window in closing and going back home isn't appealing to him. All three come from rough childhoods. Badass could relate when they visited the kids home.
