In fact, I returned to the game about a month ago, excited to relive the awesome battles I used to experience years ago. Unfortunately, the population isn't as large anymore, but there were still some big battles - not epic, but at least sizeable. However, the worst thing I encountered was witnessing immortal sunderers that essentially counter everything in the game. What good is a defensive turret if it can't destroy a vehicle? What's the point of an anti-vehicle shield if the ability to drive through it is so easy? And there’s so much more. The game has become a matter of simply hitting 'join' to teleport to a base, shoot, and then 'join' again. Honestly, they might as well delete the whole map and just make the game instanced in bases lol. Vehicles are completely unbalanced thanks to recent updates, as are the base defense elements and now this.... f*cking fishing. Oh, and lest I forget, cheaters are everywhere but the priority is the fish. So honestly, I’m done with Planetside 2 I want to keep the good memories and not spoil them.
I was under the impression that this is a side project for the new developers so they could figure out how this games code works. A lot of stuff that they have added in the recent past has had some lets say growing pains. This "patch" has mostly reused assets and very little depth. Like they were testing somethings to see how it handled when exposed to a live-ish environment. I get that it can seem bleak, but I think this shows that they are hard at work. This was something fun they could do, is it poor timing? Yes, is the community jaded? Yes. I will wait and see where this goes. Time will tell if the community overreacted or reacted appropriately. I know you and everyone else are burnt out and hurt from how the past has been, I remember the years of content drought and how we received broken promise after broken promise and moved goal post after moved goal post. But until this game goes 6ft under, I will be here. Playing, waiting and watching. And I hope to see you planet side, at least one last time before the end... o7
This game is completely dead. The developers who took over this are absolutely insane and have no clue what they’re doing. They’re going to run this game into the ground so fast with stuff like this.
i wanna be optimistic about it; it could be branched out to get some fun stuff like a new amphibious weapon(s) and marine based implants it could also just be a shock value feature to bring back players
Having a bad day? Go fishing. Want alert credit but in a slump? Enjoy fishing while the timers run out. This is the update I didn't know I needed. Thank you!!!
Saw this post not long ago on some random forum. If this is true, they could be intentionally killing the game? "DBG has recently sold Planetside2, along with 5 other titles, for a sum of $5.9 million USD. The buyer is a Shell Company called "Bay Tree Tower Limited" which has nothing to do with games. Things like these are quite usual and it happened before with games like Battlefield Heroes and Heroes and Generals, as well as movies and TV series on streaming platforms. After being bought, these games were canceled, allowing the company to benefit from a tax write-off."
A less cynical person would say that the new devs looked at the huge crate of half-finished assets and gameplay updates and tried to take out something to finish it within a reasonable timeframe and budget. And that is just a shame that it it happened to be a gag-update that got fished out (ha) from that box. A more cynical person might viewed this as the devs purposefully choosing to implement an unrelated feature as a FU to a community that has no faith in them, as if to say - we get paid no matter what happens. You do not like us? Feeling is mutual, have fun with your new update.
06:23: "fishing game, no one asked for" Well, many years ago, 3-4, maybe even more, the community did joke about "Fishing when?", so...here we are, devs listened 🙂.
The have been working on anti cheat stuff as well. Took a shot at players messing with recoil, also vehicles not in contact with the ground just explode, so flying sundie aren't currently available
Planetside 2's development is a total enigma these days. We don't know how many devs there are on the team, we don't know how much money's being spent towards our game, and we don't know how much control Toadman's team has over the continued development of our game. Fishing was for sure a side-gig though. Toadman Interactive has financial advisors. No team of theirs is gonna look at an FPS title and think of fishing as a financial investment within the game. All I can really say from a studio's perspective is the fishing update likely isn't a big loss of time on the developer's side of things. It really just screams to me "Here are some certain individuals who work for us who had nothing better to do while we were working on other things, so we allowed them to work on a little project of their own until we need them again." Because in the same time frame that this update must have taken place during, the studio was prioritizing bugs and the cheater issues. If the studio really is big enough to work on the Assault update alongside fishing, sound reworks, and battleye/cheater prevention, then great maybe we have nothing to worry about and they've been working on Assault to this day. But in the mean time, I'd assume that it's a small team and that the Assault update is on hold. As for how much the fishing content will add to the workloads of continued development down the road? I've no clue lol. Maybe this will never push to live for specifically that reason. Right now I'm kind of seeing hints/vibes that they're they're outsourcing some of the work that's been going on. If that's the case, then they're probably just trying to get the most of their contracts and outsourcing. Since the cheating became an issue I wouldn't be surprised if the contents of the Dev Letter posted earlier this year simply got put on hold in order to dedicate that manpower towards keeping the game playable, and that just freed up time for other employees and contractors. We also don't know if it was Toadman who started that Assault content or if it was RPG right before they transitioned. It's no secret that the transition from RPG to Toadman has been a long one, with obvious complications (example: apparently only one or two guys in RPG knew how to issue cert refunds and Toadman can't figure out how they did it). At the time they had probably hired/contracted somebody for a set period of time to help them fix the sound bug and make new stuff - so if they have nothing to do but gather data, might as well put em to use while they're in the studio with us. Hence the gun audio revamps that we didn't ask for but they did anyway. Artists too. They're doing some ExtraLife 2024 stuff and they're still here so might as well commission them for some fishing art. It's either that or the guy who was coding Assault is also a good artist lol. It's all convenience-based. Again, this isn't something a dev team for an FPSMMO would have willingly prioritized if they had better things to do, especially things they had already promised. This was, as Bob Ross best puts it, a happy little accident, and if it happened for that reason, then the PTS fishing update is okay in my book.
just today, i noticed a friend on steam playing Planetside 2, and i thought "i haven't tried that game in probably like 10 years, i wonder if i should give it another try with this brand new beast of a gaming laptop i just received." before downloading, i decide to check recent youtube videos on the game to see what it looks like these days, and i find this video. suffice it to say, i'm thinking maybe i'll pass.
I think this is the first step to cleaning up the game code. It is was likely supposed to be an international project, then it had enough to it to make into a full gameplay loop
Tbh this could have been a one dev thing, it's not unheard of for devs to add weird features just to test the feasability of something making actual sense for the game. If that is really the case, then they really chose the perfect theme for it to be completely impossible to guess what the hell is this thing testing for
Planetside 2 was my favorite game for many years. It sucks to see them adding pointless garbage to it that distracts from its main purpose. It's a futuristic war game: soldiers aren't supposed to be sitting around fishing in spawn. Why did the current dev team think this was a good idea? Who even asked for this?
This hurts my heart. 10 years I played this. Loved this game, got a PC to play this the year it dropped. To see this company ruin this game so quickly with each and every update. Never thought I'd see the game go down like this. This game was Magic. Pure one of a kind magic. Gg everybody. o7
"It's not what you did that angers me so. It's who you did it to." - Viggo, John Wick A silly fishing minigame being added isn't the worst possible thing on it's own, but given the state of this specific game, yeah, no, as soon as you said "fishing", I knew exactly why that angered you.
Toadmen's plan is to (simply) use fishing as a "smoke wall" to hide the real, core problem this game has (which is clientside and on how easy is to cheat in this game due to it) with fishing. ...which is a 10/10 idea, mind you, considering the fact this game existed for over 10 years and they -STILL haven't figured out a way to circumvent its core issues even less abandoning the game development altogether with a fresh, new, non-clientside FPS game. So might as well follow the "construction mentality" and add some ways for players to not interact with players altogether... in a PvP-centric FPS game.
It's because current developers aren't qualified or equipped to create anything new and exciting. Except just grabbing from the ether of mmo games and picking the most generic feature in almost every mmo game. Fishing...
People were literally begging for fishing to be properly and fully added when they did the April Fools for it...cut them some slack for giving us that when RPG wouldn't....
Here is a theory. What if this crew added fishing to PS2 to get people to talk about why tf there is fishing and to get them to play to see what its about. and this is the strat for advertising.
Ngl, I just see this as a "people who spend a lot of time in the game can have a fun relax chill downtime "haha so funny" task to do" gimmick. Not that I really care much about PS2 anymore, but I really think they should've prioritized other changes over a meme-gimmick.
Yea that's good and all but they shouldn't add crap like this until they have fixed most of the major issues. It's not a great time to be spending time and resources into this brain dead update while there is absolute bullshit going on that needs to be addressed
Thank You for showing the update (too lazy to try myself). As 30+ y/old I imagine this could be kind of fun to hang out with buddies and fish - not for achievement, not for weird aim-trainer, but just similarly to Wow, sitting with a real rod and chilling after hardcore 4h game. Man i grew up with that game. Started back in the beta while looking for something free and new to play, being the poor little kid i was. I learned everything about fps from it. From Aiming, Positioning, Situational Awareness and the like. Seeing it like this makes me sad. But i also couldn't care less anymore. The game i remember so fondly died years ago. Mithril words to people in the forum, who were ... surprised with fishing :"I understand your sentiment but for those wanting to check it out, we're hoping to hear feedback about it."
I'm seriously considering shutting down PS2Alerts after this. I've already cancelled my membership over this so called "update", it's just a massive slap in the face to the PS2 community, and I see zero point in putting in any mental or physical resources (running PS2A actually costs money believe it or not) into the game when they can't be bothered to take the game's issues seriously and address them.
I don't blame you one bit dude - seeing this as a long time supporter of the game could very just be my "well who really cares now" moment above all else.
I play on and off as I have been throughout the game's entire lifespan. Yeah it doesn't make sense and everybody that actually has a brain will laugh at it. Nobody wanted fishing nobody needed fishing and nobody ever thought planetside would actually get fishing. I come to blow off steam and that's about it. I'm happy they are still doing updates but the company no longer listens to the players. They just do whatever pops into their heads
Bosses: you need to bring something new to Planetside 2! Dev Team Meeting: Any Ideas that don’t fu.. up the game? Hey Randy! Stop playing Fishing sim in a Meeting!!! Well that’s an idea Boss! 🤦🤦🤦
It certainly is the decision of all time. For the vast majority of players, the last updates that affected them were in March 2023 (MAX revive change, Nimitz Reactor buff) or November 2022 (Arsenal Update iteration) That means that for most people, the game is frsnkly the same today as it was two years ago. Oshur and CtF "removal"/OP Sunderers aside. And yet this is what we get. I know theyre working on more. We can see it in the files. But they have, since taking over development in December 2023, not touched the balance spreadsheet once. The guns you were using, the vehicles you were driving, are will be the same in 2025 as they were in 2022. They, as PlanetSide 2 developers have for the past 12 years, are missing the forest for the trees. Theyre so obsessed with NEW STUFF that theyre forgetting entirely the simple iteration of the game we signed up for those 12 long years ago.
Quite honestly this game hasn't gone anywhere the past 10 years else then downhill. Can't remember the last update that i felt like "Wow, this really feels like something good." As planetside 2 use to be that one game you always could fall back to, that kind off fell off. I don't know why but honestly a lot of the previous things that was fun is now gone. Ti Alloys use to be a place where at lowpop hours you could have a decent fight without being HE spammed to death. Esamir use to be a decent fight aswell in the center at lowpop hours but now it's just tank galore, same with hossin and basically all maps. The maps are too open now and it's worse then ever with HE spamming, against infantry and indar use to be that one map you could play without being completely nuked by HE. Now that's gone. Infantry basically got completely out of the loop and most of the infantry you will see is infiltrators. Loads and loads of infiltrators. Either sitting in coners or sitting on a hill 1.5 km away with a sniper.
I can already see it now, people whining over region chat that a random mosquito keeps ruining their fishing session - on the up side maybe it means I'll get spawncamped by enemy aircraft less
I fairness, they did have a fishing April Fool’s joke. I don’t mind it, but it needs to have a purpose and come with other changes (with fishing being a small part of the update, not the main part). I wish oshur was better because it think it’s a great idea. I love the corsair, but it’s pointless right now.
Honestly if the games on the declining path, let them do it, they even start doing 4x XP weekend event, might bring some ppl back might not, I dont mind it at all.
Idk man the game is 12 years old and the core mechanics got dialled in a long time ago. Trying to mess with that delicate formula is begging to make things worse imo. Thinking flag caps. Control points work great. Why?? Storms, removing the crown? More examples of well intentioned adjustments that got in the way of fun fights.

You know if there are 5 people repairing a sundy, it will almost never die?
"First person shooting game... Allegedly" lmaoo
Honestly can be good for low population. Having this on console would be meta
And I hope to see you planet side, at least one last time before the end... o7
what annoys me is that they aren’t buying ad space on youtube or steam. they need to advertise already
This game is completely dead. The developers who took over this are absolutely insane and have no clue what they’re doing. They’re going to run this game into the ground so fast with stuff like this.
I also thought it was an april fools joke lmao
i wanna be optimistic about it;
it could be branched out to get some fun stuff like a new amphibious weapon(s) and marine based implants
it could also just be a shock value feature to bring back players
Having a bad day? Go fishing. Want alert credit but in a slump? Enjoy fishing while the timers run out. This is the update I didn't know I needed. Thank you!!!
We don't want to work on the game so we brought vacation to the studio.
I'm living vicariously through you and Cyrious's videos right now. I too am sad about how things have turned. It's like someone being in hospice care.
im not even gonna watch beyond 20 seconds...
fishing it not at all in tone with warfare. this is fundamentally a bad move to make.
When MMO players said that "All MMOs need fishing", this is NOT what they meant.
I've uninstalled the game ever since they refused to refund the certs after the sundy rework. After I saw fishing update I'm kinda glad I left
06:23: "fishing game, no one asked for"
Well, many years ago, 3-4, maybe even more, the community did joke about "Fishing when?", so...here we are, devs listened 🙂.
You sure this isn't Roblox at this point?
This is what they are doing. Not stopping hackers on PC. Not updating console for 2.5 years. But fishing.
Im pretty sure the og devs have been gone for some time mainly because some how a useless fishing addon is more important then fixing 10 year old bugs
I think it might be a Red Herring, hiding the real update behind it upon launch
This hurts my heart. 10 years I played this. Loved this game, got a PC to play this the year it dropped. To see this company ruin this game so quickly with each and every update. Never thought I'd see the game go down like this. This game was Magic. Pure one of a kind magic. Gg everybody. o7
If they had a decent anti-cheat and the community didn't consistently gaslight eachother that cheaters aren't extremely common I would play the game.
The fact I had a dream about Planetside 2 scares but I will never play again becsuse I'm stuck on the Connery server
"It's not what you did that angers me so. It's who you did it to." - Viggo, John Wick
A silly fishing minigame being added isn't the worst possible thing on it's own, but given the state of this specific game, yeah, no, as soon as you said "fishing", I knew exactly why that angered you.
I was a PS4 player back in the day. Ive already laid this game to rest, and it feels weird seeing the wider community grieve.
Here is a theory. What if this crew added fishing to PS2 to get people to talk about why tf there is fishing and to get them to play to see what its about. and this is the strat for advertising.
I wonder if we'll get Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Tailoring, and Leatherworking soon
Did they forgot this is a Combined Arms Massive Multiplayer WAR game?
I think they want to make it Animal Crossing now.
Rarely do I comment. Thank you for your content, sir.
There is actually a cool video about why fishing in video games, even if its out of place, helps the game to retain players and keep motivation up by offering an entirely different gameplay aspect that does not need your full attention.
Go search that video up, its worth a watch.
Other than that, i completely understand why one would be upset about the dev team when the last updates werent the coolest
Server netcode optimization? No, Game engine optimizations? No, Bring back Esamir 2016 map? No, Increase terrible FPS after construction update? No, Fix Wrels god awful "weapon balancing" No, Fix flying max's that fly around the map and cheat? No, Get Rid of OShur opening on friday nights pushing half the people off the servers? spend 6-12 months of planetside 2 developer timer on a fishing minigame? YES YES YES................
No joke theory: Fishing added to complement the isolation of the low player count era.
This is like a project you would give an intern. I wouldn't stress about it much as if they put development on actual shit on hold.
There will probably be a way to equip them or they give passive buffs kinda like weaker implants
What i would give to experience it again like it was all those years ago.
Why does everyone hate Oshur? i like it..and im sad that i like never comes :(
Because it has 20% of the playable area and it sucks
I’m one of the fellow oshur lovers. The vehicle fights can be quite intense
I thought it was an april fools joke but too early when I saw this in some discord. This is insane, most out of touch devs I've ever seen.
Just let it die bro. You have to let go now, He's gone.
Good idea, shut that thing down. These devs don't deserve any sort of external support.
🤦🤦🤦
so many glourious memories of this game now up in flames rip PS2
It's official. Every game needs to have fishing.
If there isn't fishing in the next Call of Duty or Battlefield, I am NOT buying it!!
It certainly is the decision of all time.
For the vast majority of players, the last updates that affected them were in March 2023 (MAX revive change, Nimitz Reactor buff) or November 2022 (Arsenal Update iteration)
That means that for most people, the game is frsnkly the same today as it was two years ago.
I only play Planetside for Construction and fishing.
AFK is a great way to pass the time
I'll have you know, a fishing.. tool, is a weapon vs fish.... Can you fish, .. under water?.. I don't even.
I love the corsair, but it’s pointless right now.
this game slowly die :')
Im glad i stopped playing when i did. Smh, Devs don’t know what they doing with the gave now.
Is there any news about Planetside 3 tho? I heard about it maybe 2-3 years ago first time?
Why? Just why?
jump the shark? FISH FOR THE SHARK!
the entire dev team should be drug tested
I feel like the new devs saw the old joke post from old devs and thought they were being serious.
I haven't played planetside 2 since 2012 or 2013. The idea of adding fishing to this game is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
the fun part about fishing is cracking a few cold ones with the buddies
