I was 29 years old when this game was announced for crowdfunding. Since then I’ve gotten married, bought a house, had children, changed careers twice. I’m now 40 and this game still isn’t ready for release.
I was 15 back then. Since then I have finished high school, graduated college twice, also switched career and bought a house. I am so stoked to play this game from the retirement home!
i was also 29, and have been logged in fairly often since they released the hangar module, had tons of fun since 2014-2015, and still enjoy playing, also 40 years old
You gotta take the current context of things into consideration, the game finds itself in a much better place now, 2016 game was facing a recent engine migration, lower headcount and so on Now we have 900+ devs, pretty clear path going into 1.0 and Squadron 42 launch with many tools to work with (including the upcoming Genesis). The future looks way more promising
I got Star Citizen a few months ago. Made my way through and learned the basics. Once I got everything ready to go, I set out to a planet that was a hotspot for resources and weapons. I get there, lay down on ship’s bed, logged out to use the restroom, logged in, and my ship fell through the planet with me inside, glitched out, died, had to replace my ship, attempted again, collected the resources, got back to my ship, and as soon as I closed the bay doors, the ship fell through the planet again. I died, lost everything, haven’t played since. I can’t even do the most basic stuff in this game without it falling apart and punishing me for it. I don’t want to repeat the same mission tens of times for hours at a time, just in the hopes that the proper sequence transpired for the program to be happy and allow me to progress.
I play it a couple times a year for the past like 3 years. This happens for sure lmao but id say i still got my moneys worth and will continue to do so cause the game just looks so damn good
That Squadron 42 release date started me thinking... CIG began developing Star Citizen in 2011. SpaceX began developing Starship in 2012. CIG has announced SQ42 releasing in 2026. SpaceX announced Starships to Mars in 2026, during the next transfer window. This means people on Mars as early as 2029. (More likely, 2031 or so.) So I made a bet with myself. Starships en route to Mars before Squadron 42 is released. Humans on Mars before full release of Star Citizen. I have a friend who's put money into SC, and he refused to take either bet, lol.
Lmao if you believe that they will be launching a full human crewed mission to mars by 2026 then wow, you need to touch some grass... They have only JUST been able to catch a rocket with the idiotic chopsticks. They have somewhat of the shell of a rocket and nothing else... there is no design or architecture for the interior where the astronaughts would have to live for months on end. They have done NO human trials of what that much time is zero G would even do to a human body. Starship has NO ABORT method which will mean they will never be able to fly NASA astronaughts which means having to train your own astronaughts. Then there is the simply fact that it's literally less than 2 months from 2025.... they haven't even finalized or began building the totally stupid and insane "elevator." Sorry dood but Elon isn't a god. He's just another rich kid that used his daddies money to sue and buy his way into everything and everything he has tried to do with his own brain has failed. Starship may one day go to mars but the first ship there and a few after will be with no humans aboard. Then maybe within a decade they'll start planning a real manned mission to mars but absolutely not with the next 2 years....
SpaceX has invested approximately $5 billion into the development of its Starship vehicle and associated launch infrastructure. This includes spending on rocket designs, the development of its Super Heavy booster, and the construction of facilities at Boca Chica, Texas. A significant portion of this investment has been recent, with around $2 billion allocated in 2023 alone to accelerate development and testing. When you consider that the game has spent nearly a fifth of that... It is not that impressive! Musk should have done the game instead haha
I only spend 45$ on Star Citizen and I have a great time playing it. Start delivering some packages, do some bounty, get some money to rent an ROC and Cutlass Black to go, Minning, save enough money to Get a Prospector, Get in touch with Mining Org. Sell player Quntanium location, Save money Enough to buy a Harbinger, Do VHRT Bounty, Visit Invictus Expo, and get to fly 890 Jump with 10 strangers who I just met in the Expo. It has a lot of issues, game-breaking bugs sometimes and the whole paying real-world money for in-game ship Insurance is weird but I say I've had fun with it for the whole 1-2 months, and For 45$ which is less for some AAA games that I far less enjoy playing. With all this I do hope It got released and everyone got to have the experience like I have
Tbf the “spending real money” bit doesn’t hold solid value. Sure you can do that to get a head start in terms of missions but you can also get that ship through grinding to
@@miltonova9512 IMO right now it takes a certain kind of gamer for it to be fun, as you kind of have to find your own fun. There isn't really much of an actual goal aside from earning money to buy ships, and even then, the occasional database wipe/hiccup can undo some of that progress. *I* personally find it fun. The seamless traversal keeps me grounded and immersed in the game world as I go from place to place to do different contracts. Part of CitCon 2024 was addressing the *motivation* of players to play the game, and talking about giving players more goals and more reasons to do things, so I'm happy for that.
All it did was show that Chris ROberts rather would make another movie than a game, the writing was meh, the action was good and the gameplay was dogshit.
@@MrImmortal709 The first hour of Mass Effect 2 is cutscenes and the most basic gameplay you've ever seen. That's usually how the start of a game works.
Hey I just want to clear up a few things about wipes, SC does NOT have regular/frequent FULL database wipes any more. However, there ARE partial data wipes, but rarely do they include in game purchased ships, weapons, armor, components, etc (things that are expensive). Back in the pre 3.0 days, SC had frequent full wipes because there was no way for the game data to persist between updates. The last full wipe was for 3.18 because it introduced full persistence which was a complete overhaul of their backend database, they prefer for player data to persist now between updates as it is important data for them to have on player activity. If there is a need to reset some of the player account data, CIG will let players know in advance what will be affected. Most recently we had a reputation resent because they overhauled the reputation system, and the new and old systems had completely different styles of progression. In extreme cases CIG has the ability to select what player data they want to reset i.e. Money, Items, Reputation, etc either game wide or on an account by account bases. For example, there have been a few money exploits recently where players were duping resources and making millions within an hour, CIG was able to ban the most egregious offenders and reset the money balance for others they knew were exploiting as well as remove anything they purchased in game using the exploits. Those of us who did not use the exploits were unaffected by the resets. I have several ships that I purchased in game about a year ago that have persisted. Several I purchased just because I knew a money wipe was coming the following patch, but I also wanted to test if there persistence tech was working as advertised. Since then I've had one ship that was accidentally wiped but was able to get it back after I alerted customer service. that was over 6 months ago now and I have not had any issues since.
This is good to hear. The regular server wipes that delete ships/weapons/gear/etc that you bought through grinding in game currency has kept me away from this game. I'm now seriously considering giving it a shot.
@@peternitti3671 Keep in mind there may (or may not) be more wipes coming with server meshing and economy stuff, but they really try not to. It's not a set schedule either. If they need to wipe to successfully add new tech/keep the economy in place, then that is what they'll do.
@@peternitti3671 As a active player I still caution against joining whilst this game is in alpha. There is still a great deal of instability and bugs that drive me crazy. It's best to watch streamers and gauge if you think you'll be able to enjoy the experience.
Yeah the wipes are only a thing during development. Once the game goes live, and we are no longer playing in Alpha, the credits and ships you grind will persist. Anyone playing the Alpha version will have to acknowledge the fact that they know they are helping provide data for the devs, and the database is subject to partial or complete wipes. None of the items/credits acquired through gameplay, prior to official release, should be expected to carry over to the final release version. I fully expect everything to get one final total wipe right before the official release of the final product. As for paying to excel, buying a bigger ship doesn't really do anyone any good, unless they can crew the ship. Take the Carrack, as an example. Sure, a single player can fly the ship around, but while they are flying, they can't do anything else, including firing any of the guns. You are just a big defenseless target without a sizable crew manning the ship. All they really accomplished was to help fund the game development for everyone.
@@blackeagle_138 won't there be a 1.0 reset when the game is officially released though? So if it's available to all then people can finally know it's time to jump in?
@@adribier "haters" when 2026 release date but live demo would go perfectly - ITS A SCAM, see? It looks finished but they still say 2026!!!! I spent nothing on Star Citizen, but I watched the full hour of Squadron 42 and what I was most impressed with is that the narrative is actually pretty solid. I have been semi-amused over the years, but I was convinced that they were going to throw all this money at the game, then it was going to be ultra cheesy as hell or something. Nope, that prologue for the game was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to play the full version of the single-player game whenever it releases. It is top tier amazing. Really impressed. I only play single player games.
Release is scheduled for 2026 but it is not clear when exactly. Probably around October. Wouldn't be surprised if they release it at the CitizenCon 2026.
I can understand and not understand your position. as I only play multiplayer games and just cannot understand the single player appeal. I guess to each his own.
@@Inar038 When you get a busy life, kids, career, hobby changes, and so on, you just have less time commitment for things. Online gaming basically requires time commitment to grind, to gain skills, and it often resets season after season. Single player gaming I can put in 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there. Take 2 weeks off and come back to same point I was for an hour or two. Low expectation. No need to worry about clans or guilds, activity, attendance. No need to deal with other humans, just straight gaming. I have nothing against multiplayet gaming, but as my time gets limited with life, I enjoy shorter time session that pack more punch in. Single player story narratives are great for people like me.
I thought the dialogue was also pretty darn good, they've got some quality cast on board. Took me back to the Wing Commander games Roberts created the genre. Yes it was only the prologue so gameplay was quite slow. I was a bit worried as s42 developed as I really didn't want another fps but I can understand the need particularly to explain the narrative and add the feeling of being part of a crew on a space carrier. I'm from the age where you bought a game and that was it, no need for a persistent Internet connection. No micro transactions, no sleezy gatcha chests so I'm not really sold on SC as it just seems to similar to elite dangerous or eve online. I want S42 to be a success but the jury will be out in 2026 when it actually ships..
The problem with what we saw in the gameplay trailer of Squadron 42 is that, ironically, there seems to be very little gameplay. It's an interactive movie, or a playable cutscene, whatever you want to call it. Maybe it becomes more of a game 5 hours into it, who knows, but it seems to have the same problem Star Citizen always had, which is that it's a very impressive tech demo with some very basic game mechanics attached to it. Sure, there are a lot of mechanics, but they're all bland. They are mixing genres, cool, but you could do that 30 years ago in the Rebel Assault games, and the fully 3D Shadows of the Empire. In Squadron 42, the story telling might be higher quality, which is good, but it almost seams like a crutch to lean on when they can't make the actual gameplay anywhere near as exciting as those older games were.
Whilst true, they also have to consider the launch, and obviously their already dubious general public perception. Once a full release comes out, I would reckon that at the very least ship pricing would drop drastically, with most of their income coming from leasing/selling the tools they've made
@@AnymMusic You can say "dubious" perception all you want. They've raised over $700 million while delivering some promises and missing many many others. At this point, nothing is likely to stop em. People just keep dumping more and more in with every single ship that's released. There is zero incentive to stop.
I have yet to hear anyone come up with a better way to fund this project past release, in order to cover costs of servers, and the continued dev of the project. As we players keep hoping and asking for more content. Blame CIG for feature creep, then look at the massive amount of requests for content we players keep making on a daily basis. Irony!?! If we want it, we can have it, with enough money and time. But where is that money gonna come from. Big corpo investors could be a good source I suppose. The current funding model has never forced a player to spend more. Its always been by choice. Come up with another way that will allow that. Rockstar does cash for credits, and I hear they make in a year what CIG has made since SC started dev. But I also here the players complaining about that option. Again, come up with a better way that no one will complain about, even though they are never forced to spend. Ship sales will continue after release. And those that don't have the free time to play it takes to earn a ship will be the ones buying them. We should be grateful for those that can, who choose to give money to this project, instead of the disdain that is so common. I sense envy often. If it wasn't for them, this project would never be possible. The first time in my lengthy life the more fortunate have ever invested in something I want to see happen. How is that other similar project going, that "released" in 2014, and forced its players to buy expansions in order to play with the promised content? Much of the long ago promised content still missing, and will officially never come to be. I hear selling ships is there new way to fund the "released" game.
Star Citizen is a game I enjoyed playing nonstop for 6 months. Gets stale after awhile but its a game i come back periodically. Its crazy the amount of shit you can interact with and how space travel feels so great. Downside is its graphically intesive so you need a decent pc. Their update last year though helped give people more frames with their new tech which i cant remember the name. It loads persistent item systematically and uses the engine to generate. It really improved my fps Edit: Dont go into this game expecting it to be a star wars action esque game but as a space simulator.
@@geerstyresoil3136 Yes TBH with a good CPU peformance is not bad now. It still gets crazy in areas with TONS of entities or effects such as the clouds on Orison, but there are genuinely no other games that feature anything like those things I just mentioned. Orison is a literal gas giant that you can fly all the way around, with a floating city. The middling performance is to be expected.
Luke, the location for Citizencon rotates every year to each of the different CIG locations. From what I remember the location next year is Austin, TX, then Germany, Then Los Angeles, Then UK again. They also have a new location in Toronto, so there's a chance they may have one there one of these years. Just an FYI.
@@robertschnobert9090 Not sure I understand what you're getting at. I'm familiar with Los Angeles. I lived there for sixty years. I just listed the CIG locations. I didn't say they were in different countries.
Given his history, I dont see Chris Roberts ever truly finishing this. They'll add new stuff as long as they keep getting money, but the man is a perfectionist. None of his games have come out without outsode forces making him consider them complete
First, "Thats no moon!" needs to be said. The 10 years of insurance will run out before this game releases. I am an OG Kickstarter and I can't imagine this game will ever actually release. It has become a cautionary tale of what happens when you give a billion dollars to someone who has a history, nay, a tradition! of missing milestones and including scope creep in his games. Roberts bit off more than he can chew and now, we're as likely to see this game before he dies as we are to see the completion of the Game of Thrones (books) before George RR Martin dies. Or Patrick Rothfuss finishes the Kingkiller saga. And when you can mint 3/4 of a BILLION dollars with ships, there is no reason actually to stop their predatory practices.
A slow paced story is honestly fine if the atmosphere is there and it definitely looks to full of it so that's good to see. Also if that's Mark Strong I spotted the casting guys know what they're doing.
mark strong, mark hamil, cavil, gary oldman i could go on for 10 minutes and you would recognize all these names... and the best part is some of them are doing it for the heck of it no payment whatsoever
They no longer wipe AUEC hangars unless something really messed up on the back-end. Generally the ships that you pay for in-game will be kept between wipes, as well.
Thanks for giving the game a fair perspective, Luke. I bought the minimum game package that included the same Aurora ship you flew in this video, Star Citizen, and Squadron 42 for $65 back in 2015, and the only money I've spent since was another $40 to upgrade my starter to a Gladius in 2017. Rest assured that nobody is as upset about how long SC and SQ42 has taken than the actual backers of the game, so for anyone complaining about how long it's taken, I agree 100%. As for the monetization, I agree that the ship pledges and their prices are obscene, which is why I haven't bought any outside of what I mentioned above. For that investment, I have already enjoyed hundreds of hours of gameplay (and have hated hundreds more when bugs occurred), and have no plans on giving CIG anymore money not because I can't, but because for me part of the fun is earning those ships to fly them. In the long term I agree they likely won't stop selling ships, but I also feel like when we get to 1.0 those ship prices will drop or they just won't sell. To hopefully help put the $730 million headline in perspective: - with over 5.3 million game accounts, assuming every one of them has the bare minimum aurora + SC game package ($45) that alone makes up $250 million of the revenue they've made, so more than 1/3 of the game's revenue over 12 years came from just people buying the base game offering. The whales absolutely exist but you don't really need that much money per person to get to $700 million. - Genshin Impact made $930 million in revenue for 2023. That's just one year to CIG's 12 years. - Concord cost $400 million to make and is literally gone, cannot be played. - CIG employees over 500 developers. If we lowball their average salary at $75,000 a year, then pay that for 10 years (they didn't have all these people when they started) that works out to over 380 million just to pay their developers over that time frame. This is JUST to cover the developers, not the writers, composers, actors, mocap studios, none of that stuff. I shouldn't need to say this but game dev is expensive.
They promised Freelancer 2 in a persistent universe with 100 starsystems and NPCs driving the universe and story. They now aim to deliver a survival sandbox that is player driven with 5 starsystems. Definitely NOT what people paid over 700 millions for.
I'm from Korea, and I've spent 705 USD on Star Citizen. It still got no official Korean translation. Some says that Star Citizen is a scam. They also point out that some officials in CIG already done some scams. However, What I've seen until now since I first played Star Citizen, This is what I think : Even if this is a scam, it still worth all my money. Also, I think CEO of CIG is kinda daydreamer. Dreamer, who dreams and pursuit rainbow. But, I don't think chasing rainbow is all bad thing. So, I decided. I want to join chasing rainbow. How long for Star Citizen 1.0 to come out to take, well, I don't give a shit. Oneday, they'll catch rainbow. With all development they've done so far, Oneday. I know that they will do it.
Actually a good description of the game and the company :D I do love the rainbow chasing myself, but I feel weird watching citizencon and people clapping at basic systems that existed in other games 20 years ago. Personally I did pledge to the game as well, I hope one day I will be able to experience the entire game
@@Ficohaker wdym exactly? Are you saying that no tech developed by CIG is actually new/different/groundbreaking? I'm not a tech (backend) person myself so I can't judge, but server meshing seems pretty unique and their grand-scale tech is maybe rivaled by slight simulator? But even then flight sim is less in depth in terms of layered topography (from ground to space and beyond).
@@Humanaut. Hi, I will start by saying I do consider the scale of the tech they are doing is cool and not done before. But, server meshing has existed on smaller scales in a lot of previous videogames, from minecraft servers to ark survival evolved and probably a few others I am personally unfamiliar with. On the topic of ground scale tech, its pretty similar to no man sky, or any other generative system for a planet. Bethesda's starfield did the tech, but that was so bad it made the entire planets boring and uninteresting. So while I adore the scale of star citizen, it is not "new" nor is it interesting thus far until we have proper gameplay to judge the entire systems working together. Until then it is all a tech demo and a lot of other studios did entire engines and multiple games in the same span for CiG to do a tech demo. But I understand CiG had to do a lot of engine rebuilds and changes that threw their timeline from 5-10 years, to 15-20, which is pretty similar to what happened to some other well know games(hytale and one more that I can't recall right now) that just scaled too far and realised what they have isn't going to support their game and vision not only on launch, but thinking 10+ years into the future, hence why we get such insane delays on games. What I was more targeting in my comment was the social features and base building. None of those were anything ground breaking, nor would they even be considered the best in their respective game genres. Sure they might be the prettiest, but that graphical fidelity is only in engine, and when you have to scale the tech and the game to actual playable state, you lose so much that the game simply cannot look that nice, or you have to sacrifice something else because server meshing isn't jesus tech, and they would have to rely on 100's of shards (different servers/instances of WoW or any other MMo you probably played in the past) that the scale and beauty of it defeats the purpose of the world being such a lovely vast and open space. And that is why I think even CiG doesn't know what they want, or how to make the game and why it is taking so bloody long. SQ42 might be their good grace play here, a singleplayer game that promises everything for everyone, and then when they end up releasing SC 1.0 the community and the company will not crash and burn, but if you ask me they are bloated and overstaffed as it is, and are burning way too much cash for the amount of product they released. Hope this long comment answers your questions you had
They said they were feature complete. NOT content complete. In game development, feature complete means that all the core systems & mechanics needed for the game to function are implemented. For Squadron 42 (SQ42), this would include things like flight mechanics, AI behaviors, and core combat systems. Content complete, on the other hand, means all the assets and content like levels, story missions, voice acting, and visual details are fully integrated & polished. Big difference.
@@MarkMuhammad190 If you don't have an already developed engine and Game features, then 8 years and more is really not a long time. You can't compare it with a Call of Duty, Battlefield, or Assassins Creed. Where you can reuse Assets and code as well as an already fully developed engine. For Star Citizen they had to make massive changes to the engine, had to develop entirely new engine features, then had to write the game mechanics from scratch.... That's not something you do in a year or two. It took them 4 years to get the engine to a point where it is somewhat usable before they could even really start with the rest of the game.
They are really trying not to wipe anymore. Also once you know what to do, "grinding" ships is super easy (for now). I've talked to a few people who reach 10 million in a week or two. The hardest part is being new and not knowing how easy it is to get money.
@@CrispyMuffin2 Not to encourage begging in game chat, but lots of experienced players end up with more money than they know what to do with and are happy to help out new players financially or let them test drive bigger ships. The sheer awe of a new player seeing a massive ship up close for the first time is part of the fun lol
HRTs are head and shoulders above basically every other type of money making gameplay and it's almost certainly going to get nerfed at some point. Last time I ran them with a five man group for 7 hours straight, we all walked away with 10 million credits.
i was surprised about the low prices after just one week of playing, and even with the new balanced prices i think its still a bit cheap. But i guess they don't want to make it too much of a grind for the more casual players.
I got 35 million in a few hours by bounty hunting and selling the goods I found in the hunted ships. Not sure if in this version is possible but that were fun times.
Just a heads up, the server wipes actually very rarely happen anymore, and when they do, they only wipe what they have to. I've still got the same ships I bought in-game about a year ago now
I'm kinda amazed because I still have that salvaged / 'found' Crusader Security Elite armor which was at some point harder to obtain via legal ways anyway. The last armor set I got almost 2 years ago or so. I'm still carrying it in storage. I think they might wipe with 4.0 (pre-release version 4.0, not to be confused with the 1.0, for any 'outsiders' reading this, basically 4.0 will come before 1.0) again next time. If we jump to the conclusion that 2026 will indeed be SQ42 release and if we assume that 1.0 might be deployed some time around or shortly-ish before 2030, and seeing how the last full wipe of gear and money and so on was like ... 2 years ago(?) then I assume we might only see about... 2-3 more full wipes? Give or take? But as the rough joke goes, the amount of wipes to come will always be at least 1 ... until that 1.0 version.
Im sorry but im fully aware there is a playable portion of this game and I will call it a scam/cult until the day it releases as an actual full game. Even then honestly it will still have been a scam. When you are so many years behind your initial release date, it is totally illogical to still be coming up with and adding new features. They could have ceased coming up with new features years ago and just focused on getting the game to 1.0. Either they dont know what the final game will look like, or in their minds the game is actually just selling ship models to desperate backers, whilst holding the actual "finished" game just out of reach until everyone leaves.
@@BlackVampyr You aren't forced to back, so unless you willingly backed this project then it isn't "your" money. If you did back then you did so willingly. What's the problem? I'd rather a crowd sourced game that ends up being amazing rather than a studio funding a game, taking 8 years, and ending up with Starfield lmao
41:10 to be completely fair with wipes, they aren't an intentional feature of the game like something with Tarkov or Rust, rather they are a symptom of the state of development that SC is in. Wipes are actually very infrequent these days and only occur with very major patches or if something goes very, very wrong. I last played Star Citizen February of this year, and I logged in yesterday and there has been no wipe in that time. There will likely be a wipe soonish, with patch 4.0, as that patch adds the second star system and will change the game massively. But Wipes these days are super infrequent, and CiG are working to make them even less infrequent until there is no longer any need for them at all once the game reaches the 1.0 release that they outlined at this citizencon.
And that's why I haven't played in 3-4 years. Can't deliver a product, and all the "gameplay" is a complete waste as soon as they wipe. 10 Fing years - people change their friends and financial circumstances and whole life every 10 years on average. 10 years ago you bought a $45 ship - now today you bought another for your 10 y/o son hoping one day you two will get to play together, but FYI, you still have another 2 years to wait per the "official" plan, and with history of RSI, you know they won't meet that deadline either.
I mean, I agree the spending can get crazy but I don’t get it - for years I’ve been hearing about people buying DOTA skins, waifus, and ARPG skins or power to the same tune. You can buy nearly every ship in Star Citizen for less than it cost some people to max out their Diablo Immortal character’s gems.
I have no issues with how pledging ships work. If you want to contribute to development, buy a ship. If you don't like the ship, you're able to melt it down and get a different one for the same value. I've used the same pledge to try out like 8 different ships over the years.
My friends and I used to get together and have LAN parties back in high school. It was awesome. Years later we would get together and have little get togethers with all our PCs again. This was about 10 years ago. I remember back then our friend worrying about upgrading his PC to be able to handle Star Citizen. It cracks me up. I think back then the only thing that was available was the hangar demo. 😅
They said it was feature complete last year, not content complete. That's actually a big difference. Feature complete means the mechanics of the game, all the features necessary to run through it are done. So, like, one example would be fire propagation and extinguishing. Content complete would mean that the game is *done* done. And that was not what they said.
My guy trying to make excuses lmao. Trust me, I am a Star Citizen fan but I've been away since probably February/March... They contradict themselves a lot.
Good point, but to be fair, "content complete" can mean anything from "great game already, we just want to add some cherries on top of the pie" to "not really enjoyable yet to play for the average gamer."
@IWatchYouFromAfarOfficial, I play SC with no problem, on a very mid-range PC, at 1080P. Just make sure you have a decent video card (doesn't have to be top of the line) and plenty of memory (32 GB or more is best). Make sure you run it off a SSD and not a hard drive. You should be fine.
Wait until they migrate the entire game to a new engine in a couple of years, thus delaying the release again (until they wait for another new game engine to shift to)
I was 8 years old when crowdfunding was announced for this game. I'm 19 now. I have 3 masters degrees and I'm working on my Phd dissertation. I have six sons, one daughter, and a wife at home. I told my trust fund manager to invest in bitcoin when I was 4 years old. Thankfully, he listened...
Um yes Luke. They have showed incredible DEMOS and TECH through the many long years. Unfortunatley very little of those big wow things have been implemented in any major way or even released. We all know you can play Star Citizen right now. Its a small percentage of the game they have promised not even including the massive feature creep and the insane additions over the years. Some people enjoy whats there and that's ok. Let's just put on the brakes though when talking up these incredible tech demos they have showed and even though Starfield was a big disappointment, they still released a complete game so we have to wait and see what Star Citizen ends up being in the end before throwing shade. Thats if there is truly an end since they actually consistently tech out, meaning tech advances before they even finish the earlier tech they show off, so its already outdated and things are rebooted. Its an endless cycle. So just wanted to make sure people who don't know much about SC can see the other side of the "Wow looks so awesome and incredible tech everywhere!" side you present here. Squadron 42 lol, not even going there, everyone wants the persistent Universe stuff anyway so that endlessly delayed game is kinda moot at this point. Bummed but not surprised Henry is part of the SC thing but he is rich so I can see how he could get sucked in much easier than normies. I don't even want to know what he has spent on GIFs. P.S--Damn, just finished the video, boy Luke you are shilling hard for Star Citizen, even giving them passes on the bug's, the hilarious crashing Squadron 42 demo, etc. the endless delays, broken dates and overpriced GIFs that do not even exist w/no promises of them ever existing. I am glad you did talk about the pricing etc. at the end a little though it was more of the optics of non fans then the actual issue but that's cool. At this point I have no faith that all the incredible tech, vast universe, massive multiplayer spaces they have shown etc. will all make it into a final game. Make no mistake, It would be awesome if Roberts pulls it off and we actually get everything they have promised and showed off, including creating every ship they have sold into fully functioning in game fully functional models. The question is will many of us even be alive to friggin play it lol. ?
14:41 yeah the date reveal was a little bit of a mood killer for some of us long time backers but there is a video out there on youtube that compares the hour long video this year to the tease released last year, and there is polishing on the visuals, to a crazy degree Since the quality was a 10/10 this year on those updates, I'm happy to wait to 2026
I hope they improve the FPS combat. I'd like the fights with the Vanduul to be a lot more brutal and fast paced. We saw NPCs getting thrown around and detroyed by them but they seemed a bit passive when fighting the player
@@kityhawk2000 it was the prologue. The opening scene that creates the setting. I think all of the combat was dumbed down to make the prologue harder to fail as a player, so you could watch the movie. I highly suspect the subsequent chapters will drop that approach, and combat will be difficult
Luke, I think they don't want to release in 2025 because GTA 6 will be releasing next year. I don't think any studio wants to be anywhere close to that release. I can't remember the details but any ships purchased with real world money will automatically have some type of insurance. I forgot what level of it it is though. Also, they don't delete your in-game ships very often anymore with new patches. Any earned money and consumables will be gone. Two of the Starlancer various variants will be available next month in November in the in-game IAE event. As far as real money purchases, I buy ships with my money because I work 12 hours a day Monday through Friday and I don't have time to grind for the ships I want. I literally have a few hours on Saturday and Sunday to play if at all. I buy cool ships but that does not help me because I still suck at the game. I have a high-end heavy fighter but I continually get my ass handed to me in combat. I spent $230 on that ship. But I love it. It doesn't help me win anything lol. I just don't want do we have to grind for it if they do do a wipe and take the in-game ships with the wipe. Plus some ships are limited time sales so yeah I'm a victim of fomo on occasion. But Star Citizen is my only vice.
Who cares for the release of GTA VI? There aren't even remotely as many people waiting for Star Citizen as for GTA. Even if Star Citizen ever releases (hint: it won't), it will not even be in the top 10 sales of that year. Regardless of what else releases. It's just not a genre that many people want to play. Get real guys. Nobody who isn't already invested in Star Citizen will be in the future.
@@Tokru86 "There aren't even remotely as many people waiting for Star Citizen as for GTA" yes, that is literally why you DON'T want to launch against such an utter fcking behemoth. Your launch numbers matter a lot for success perception, and so you don't want, say, half of the people who would be interested in SQ42, be hooked in by GTA VI around the same time.
@@Tokru86Wym lol star citizen is one of the most anticipated games ... when it releases. It's a joke right now and everyone knows if, but once the full thing comes out and the features/stability are there, this will easily be one of the biggest games ever
Couldn't have said it better myself. I too worked 70 hours a week, and made good money. So I applied that money to my hobbies and interests. SC being one of them for the same reason you did. I did however recently retire unplanned, and now find myself struggling for a goal to reach in game. So do be careful. One day you may not be working as much. Hooray for base and station building. New goal set to do, just because I can. The really good fighter pilots will honestly tell you, skill wins in a ship almost every time. Like you, I get wrecked a lot in ships so many claim to be good. And often by much smaller and less formidable ships. So those pilots say knowledge and practice practice. But practice takes time, and I really don't like combat gameplay in most games. So I don't like practice. Thankfully I can spend hours even days in game and never have to fire a single shot. I have friends who gladly prevent or avenge my demise. That fomo is real isn't it. Give credit to CIG's marketing team, they do it well. There is some RDR2 content I missed because they used the same tactic. Don't see anyone criticizing them for it.
Calling it a scam would be dishonest. Calling it a good example of why you don't give the 'visionary' an unlimited budget and zero accountability would be far more accurate. This game isn't going to have its shining moment of glory, where all 'the haters' will eat dirt. The entire future of the project hinges on SQ42 being a breakout success, and if it is anything less, it's over. interest will naturally decline as more and more people lose faith, and Chris will 100% find the earliest chance he can to quietly jump ship the second it becomes clear the project isn't going to last much longer.
I've been saying it for years. I can absolutely see this game being my dream tribute game to Cowboy Bebop. I can just picture it so easily, drifting in orbit of some random moon, anti-gravity floating in a cargo hold of my ship with the old school sax jazz playing.
Hell yeah! Pyro looks like a good setup for bounty hunting. Having a space radio station with different genres of music would be a good add. Could also have a good Star Wars space battle feel(played as Jango fett with my eclipse, hid behind an asteroid, turned off all power and basically hunted them with stealth.)
29:21 . This. This is what got me to spend $45 on this game. The idea, the dream of living among the stars as a Space Cowboy-esk Dude, the itch that Star Wars put into me and the itch that i wasn't able to scratch until i tried the game out. Now, i can't play it ofc, cos it's very, very laggy for me, but even that bit of gameplay i did get to enjoy, was exactly what i wanted out of a game such as this. The ability to fly around planets, land wherever, trade cargo, mine in space, do bounty hunting like a Fett, and such. The game is a buggy mess, but it sure is enjoyable when it clicks into the part of the brain that yearns for that Space Life.
Your points about in game economy being upset by real world purchases doesn’t really make sense in practice. EVE online has PLEX and Omega and tons of other games have premium subscription models that allow players to excel and make more money in game while still having extremely diverse and successful economies.
Maybe - but that doesn't negate the obligation for RSI to release something to people who paid money and expect something for their investment. I bought in back in 2018, and was told then SQ42 was roadmap to release around 2020/21. Yet here we are at the end of 2024 and still waiting.....
I get it, he has some issues too but I'm getting the idea that the "concerns" Derrick Smart brought up about Roberts way back at the start, not being able to "finish a game"...eh hem! ...are starting to make me take pause. I know I know, Roberts is "making a AAA, can never be topped, is more awesomer than anything ever made game" and give us an epic gaming experience. But I can't ignore that gut feeling that, with all of the bugs (or parts of the game that aren't working or don't integrate with the whole game) that are STILL plaguing the game, is Roberts vision even technically possible at the current state of technology? IF he is "inventing" the technology, than that's what is making that gut feeling warn me to just stand by and see what happens first.
I got two weeks of gameplay this month, new player. Each of those days, couldn't wait to play it. There were bugs, but the scale and scope and level of detail and thought in the game is incredible! I could understand why its still in development. However, Thursday Oct 17th, approaching the atmosphere of a planet. Then the game just closed and the launcher started pushing update 3.24.2. i got back in, my ship was deleted, no one could use public transit and I got permanently disconnected. I have been unable to play the game since, with an error that says my character is in a specific server still and i need to wait a few minutes its been 6 days! Its so frustrating, I was hooked.
Unlucky time to start. After crunch time devs are forced to take time off so it takes abit to debug. To make it worse 3.24.2 uses code that is very new to the game as a whole and will be more janky then usual. On the upside the patch will be very short lived before we goto 4.0 and the game changes a lot.
For my part, and in a certain point of view, you are right and wrong at the same time. If Star Citizen it's a game people want to play as second life, enjoy the universe and so on, the pay to excel is not valid for that kind of player. In other hand because is pvp and pvp experience some will pay extra buck to get the upper hand. So I think it's a matter how do you perceive the experience of Star Citizen. I hope it makes sens in english, I'm from Québec and french is my native language. Good vid by the way, thank you.
Luke unfortunately you skipped over the 1.0 discussion right to endgame. Detailing what they’re targeting for a launch version of the game for the first time is a very important topic and more tangible right now than endgame content. The video for this part of the presentation was just uploaded and it is called The Stars My Destination: Star Citizen 1.0. Edit: Spare me the “CIG doesn’t deliver” comments. Yeah, duh, we all know what they say and what actually happens are two different things. I’m not saying any different or defending them. I’m saying that if you’re going to talk CitizenCon then it’s important to talk about CIG outlining their plans for 1.0 because it’s the first time since the scope of the game massively increased that they have done that. For everyone following the project this was the most important part of the convention but most of the coverage is skipping over it.
The important thing about 1.0 is how little of the game it will have in it, dozens of things still missing and NPC crew and advanced NPC behavior is not even on the list and already confirmed to be not a priority and getting worked on sometime after 1.0
@@jondspen Again, something Luke would address in discussion. I’m not white knighting, I’m just saying that CIG outlining their intentions for 1.0 should be part of this discussion.
@@jondspen For example, Star Citizen originally planned to launch with 100 star systems and now it’s 5. Don’t you guys think that is worthy of mentioning that is this discussion? That was my intention.
Part of the problem is that potential new backers see the trailers showing the game and they think that when they get into the game, it’s going to proceed just like the expensive trailers. However the trailers are so far from what the game actually is. I have backed this game since early 2020 and I still love this gsme. Being a backer also allows me the right and opportunity to point out the many shortcomings. I can assure you, that Star Citizen is definitely NOT a scam. This game is, even right now with all of the issues still the best Space Game that exists. But there are many problems. CIG creates new ships every year for good money but doesn’t fix or make the ships that are in game and worse they haven’t produced ships that players have backed for quite a few years back. I have been told CIG is a bit short of cash and they need new money to continue. I don’t know if that is an actual fact or not. The stability of the game in the current state basically sucks. I do wish that CIG would fix all of the issues up to this point instead of creating new issues as we go. I can see how someone would be disappointed when viewed from that angle. Just a thought.
It is what it is. Currently their model is based on crowd funding one way or another. If they can get the game to a state of release, then they can sell access to the game itself without a ship and sustain the servers and patches/etc through standard monthly/yearly subscriptions.
The 2 biggest things that came out of CitizenCon is what the full release 1.0 game is intended to be and one of the most boring but important things ever for an MMO system is the Friends and Organizations interface that is the most basic thing in all MMOs. The fact we are 12 years into it and still don't have that basic functionality is mind boggling. But what they showed, is exactly what is needed, and we are glad they are finally addressing it. The downside of course is the "When?" question was not answered, and 1.0 features look like they might take a really long time. SC 1.0 2030? Maybe. It is hard to wait this long and know there is significant waiting ahead.
RSI has really failed the customers. It looks like I will be playing this game with my grandson - just hope I am not dead and not physically/mentally incapacitated by the time I get what I paid for. I could have graduated HS, college, married, and while SC created an engine - I created a human being almost ready to enter High School themselves. RSI isn't curing cancer either....FFS
There are reasons why they tackled the Friedns and Orgs menus right now and that is because: Building Blocks UI". I know you dont know, and I know if I would explain it you would just scream CuLTiSt!!11 anyway, but just for the protocol: there are reasons that make sense. And informed people know more. Also, look again: that system they implemented to organize your org and friends list is better than in most MMOs.
what game devs have completely underrated for years at this point is the importance of aesthetics and player investment into lore. Star Citizen is making a great choice here by investing their player base into a storyline of this magnitude and aesthetically its really cool.
it is totally up to the player to decide if they want to support what they have created. If you really love the idea the devs have and you want to support there's way to do so, and in return you get things back you can use right away. They don't try to hide that game has problems resources are all over to show the state of the game so if you dont want to support their vision then you dont have to while its in this state. I think a lot of people who say this game is scam don't realize that the entire game engine had to be made from scratch. They had to build the game engine from nothing because no engine on the market could do what their vision was. They are inventing new things never seen at this scale for games too. I really hope they don't trademark or copyright what they make so other developer could build off of it in the future. Seeing what is being made possible in the universe is generally so fascinating from the eyes of gamer. I cant imagine what other developers think when they see what they have accomplished.
Ships can be purchased by earned money within the in game economy. Purchased ships, as of right now anyway, are permanent in your inventory. Ships purchased for in game currency that youve earned and worked hard for, can be wiped during large updates etc.
As someone who likes the game and the project, I agree with both these statements, and I feel a lot of people in the SC community would too. It's an amazing piece of tech that you absolutely can have a lot of fun in if you're a certain type of person, but if you're not a masochistic psychopath it's going to be a hard pass for most people lmao.
The people buying the $400+ ships are really a benefit to you, you can group up with them or call on them for help when needed. Not much of an impact will be made on your personal gameplay if another person wants to purchase a $45 ship or a $400 ship. There will always be something to grind for. You can't just 'purchase' base materials or upgraded QT drives and shields etc.
Bigger ships = bigger costs of running, bigger insurance fees, fuel and repair costs, so in my opinion buying biger ships with real money will cost you more money in game
@@alex_panthea CIG isn't going to stop people from paying their way into large ship combat. They'll sell NPC crew, AI-modules, and everything else necessary to keep the ships running. Paying to skip the grind is their core business.
@@Shadowcam00They just recently said NPC crews will not be in for 1.0, and AI blades will only be for turrets for now. So at release there will still be no way to properly solo a large ship.
The devs should take notes on the prices, if people HATE micro transaction like dragons dogma or in general in any game, then maybe a pack shouldn’t be $10,000
its a crowdfunding campaign, not microtransactions for a game financed by a publisher. Its in the core a different thing. You dont have to do any transaction, you just buy the game /currently 45 dollars, after release 60-70)
PTU is very playable already right now. My friends and I hop on for a few weeks of intensive gameplay every six months or so and we always have a lot of fun. Sure you'll encounter bugs, but not enough to be a showstopper. There are missions and stuff and other stuff Luke talked about in this video but right now it really is more of a sandbox 'make your own fun' kind of deal. It's one of those games where you'll plan to go and do something but unexpected things happen and you end up doing something completely different for hours. That's also immediately why it's way more fun playing with others over playing it alone. It's also not so expensive to play even though the price tags on those ships may lead people to believe that. Get an nice starter ship plus access to the game for $45 and you're all set. Earn ingame credits and rent or buy better ships with them.
15:23 As a long time backer, I agree, it is frustrating. However, content creators like yourself and many others would DESTROY them if they released a buggy, unfinished, lackluster "AAA" bethesda like game. "They took 14 years for this?" and "850 MIllion dollars and this is what we get?" there would be no end to it. They can't afford to release a broken product.
Agreed. Love the game in it's current state. Refuse to believe the game will never go gold...or beta even. Sure it might be when my grandchildren are getting married or have their own children lol. No lol, I'm positive that the game is getting close to finishing ya know. Cuz there's a lot to love in it's current state
I personally have no problem with this not coming until 2026. With a game as absurdly massive as this, I would much rather they make sure everything is damn near perfect instead of it dropping a few months from now and it's a buggy mess with god awful performance.
I want to add some miss conception here : - Server wipe ( Ship, In Game Credits ) only apply because the game is on testing state, once 1.0 release, there will be no wipe. - Bigger ship doesnt mean better ship if only manned by 1 crew, its harder to maintain, and take times much longer to respawn ( if destroyed ) - All real money ship is tier 1, to upgrade it to better tier ( up to tier 5 ) you need to progress it in game
the last point is still bad imo. a big Ship should be valuable. Like an "Holy Shit" moment if you see it ingame. and this moment gets destroyed if you just sell these Ships for real Money.
@@AngryHoplite most of the "holy shit" ships are hull limited, meaning only a certain amount of them are sold whenever they're sold, not to mention they're expensive and you need a LOT of friends to even run them. The biggest ship won't even be buyable on the pledge store
If you get a starter pack and can't save $10. a month to CCU upgrade to the ship you like, then how can afford a PC to play it ? Besides that, the bigger the ship, the harder it is to run. More cost ingame in every aspect, including crew size. A Cap ship crew, will be like herding cats. It will take a disciplined crew to run. Spending more RLM in Star citizen does not = an I win button ...
- Server wipe ( Ship, In Game Credits ) only apply because the game is on testing state So there have been server wipes during those 10+ years of development? that must really suck (for people who didn't pay for ships)
@@adribier I think everyone who pledge for the game already know the risk as the game is still in testing stages. There several types of wipe, either credits, ships, reputation. I am already played the game for 1,5 years and had only experiencing credit wipes, once, as the dev want to test the new economy, I am still keeping all my bought in game ship tho
What I suspect will happen for the "stopping selling ships" thing, is that they'll stop selling currently flyable ships, but still do concept sales and sell them for real money when they release to have them exclusive for the first however many weeks or months.
I only just recently bought into the game after a friend begged me to get it. I was highly skeptical about it being more then essentially an interactive tech demo for a couple planets and ships. I stand very corrected. The technology on display even at the game’s current state is mind boggling, the level of detail and handcrafted elements of entire planets is almost incomprehensible.
If anyone is looking at trying it right now, please wait a couple days. The current patch is a hot mess and I really would hate for this patch to be your first experience. I think a hot fix is coming tomorrow. o7
Good to know - started playing in 2018 (which was 1/2 playable). Then pirates/cops on you as soon as you left PO - broke game. Falling through elevators in Grim. Xeno was fun but horrible. You need(ed?) a super computer to play and render - and you comment clues me in nothing has changed - still a buggy POS 10+ years later.
@@jondspen The most significant issue today is server stability, plain and simple. When the servers are working well SC today is more stable than it has ever been. Right before this most current patch dropped I played in a three man basically all day long. Not a single crash, not a single 30k, not a single game breaking bug. I haven't fallen through an elevator in years. To say the game has made no progress is grossly disingenuous. They should have made way, WAY more progress than they have, but they've come a long way from 2018. They have been abysmally slow to develop this game either way, and splitting focus between SC and SC42 to me was an unacceptable decision.
@@balzarinemythus50 I always had better performance on AUS server than any other - US server was rocking at like 3am - but any other time not so great. Try 5pm on a Sat night - forget about it. Xeno wasn't bad (late 2021 if I remember), but I think we (TEST) broke the server ramming 890s into the Bengal trying to get it out of the base area...lol. And I agree....SQ42 should and could have been released a LONG time ago. You don't need server meshing and shards for a single player game.
Thank you for giving SC a fair shake every once in awhile. The universe is massive, and it's taking a very long time to build. I've been a backer of the game from day one back in 2012. I believed in their vision then, and I still do to this day. Just enjoy the ride.
"SC" is an acronym for "Scope Creep", in case anyone was wondering. As in "That Scope Creep game sure looks like it'll be great once they finish coming up with new features to add"
This is one of the most rounded takes on the game I have seen to be perfectly honest. I am a few thousand dollars in to it over the last 12 years so I have a fair few ships. It has to be said though that the ships you get are just rewards for supporting the development of the game. If the project as a whole fails I will be sad, but I have put money into the game because I believe in the vision, and damn, it's looking great right now.
Your's seems to be a very healthy way to look at this. I just bought the base package in 2016, but I can understand why people like to support the development with more. After all, this *could* become the greatest experience for sci fi lovers to ever exist. I do understand some of the criticism though and CIG is by no means perfect. But the latest AAA-catastrophes have shown game development to be a chaotic business and tanking ridiculous amounts of money in development on things that will never see the light of the final product is to some extend unavoidable. I don't think there exists any other way to make a game like star citizen than the one CIG has taken.
Sunk cost fallacy, you are surely not biased... Btw the vision doesn't mean anything chris changes that vision every other week lmao, how many times I seen star citizen defenders say that everything can change because that is development. And game doesn't even have enough features to call it close to original vision.
I’m confused. 700 million dollars. This is no better than No Man’s Sky and they had like 8 people, and almost no budget. No way they will stop selling ships either. So the entire idea is dead in the water. We already live everyday in a rich guy wins scenario. The reason these games appeal to most people is you want to escape that and have a chance.
I have no idea if all the money thrown into this game is worth what it is as of today, but this journey sure is something I would not eexpect to see actually happening I may even finally join the community and give my contribution, whatever it goes to
Yes try out one of the free events, but you don't have to be a backer if you don't want to. You would always have the option to buy the game when it releases proper
Ehhh....it's only $45...but if you're cool with setting $45 on fire (i.e. spend the money and not expect anything substantial) I would say do it. It's a kinda fun cluster F alpha - if that what you expect for 45 bucks, you won't be disappointed. If you bought in back in 2018 and expected them to somewhat follow a roadmap and be playing SQ 42 in 7 years - you are going to be VERY VERY VERY disappointed.
Try the international Aerospace exhibition (IAE) end of November, its free for two weeks and you can simply see yourself. Just ask in chat, veteran backers are used to help players who just want to sniff a bit the feeling.
One thing about SC is that I shifted my view of it entirely. I initially wanted a game, but now I just marvel at the new tech they pioneer and we might see drip down to other companies and games later on.
So I’ve been a SC player/backer for a couple years, at the ‘Citizen Con’ they did last week, the introduced crafting tiers and upgrades that effect ship/item performance. I’ve seen several people suggesting that the ships paid for with real currency should be a lower tier than the ones bought in-game. It doesn’t negate all of the advantage but does at least provide some balance as everyone is likely right and they will continue to sell ships.
They dont just do random wipes because its the point of the game tho, that makes no sense. They wipe because of whatever they are working on at the time needed a wipe... our next wipe is 4.0 people??? When was the last wipe ?
They sold me when the guy on the stage said we could build our own capital ship. Hell, I'm a fan of Supership or Capital Ship (large-size ship) and I'm definitely buying this game when it comes out.
Definitely some valid concerns you brought up at the end. Recently had a discussion about this with a friend. The main issue right now with buying ships in game is definitely the wipes, but with their 1.0 plan, those wipes will no longer happen making buying and crafting your ships to keep in game wayy more viable. This brings up the concern of how difficult or lengthy they'll make it to get ships in game to potentially incentivize just buying them for actual money. And if they do stop selling ships, how else would they be able to appropriately fund the studio to keep building on their ambitions? These are exciting times to be a fan, but there's definitely room to be concerned with the future of the game, even with the huge advancements it's been making lately.
24:44 Buying ship is the most blunt p2w in the face, as in any mmo where you can buy armor or weapons. Buying advantage is pay2win, there is no other way arround this fact. The same as end game, no such thing exist in mmo games, you are simply talking about guild/clan activity. Im fed up pepole trying to make up new reality out of their asses of things that already exists for as long as mmo games. You can have nubs in your "playerbase", again making "endgame" argument absolutely ridicilous. This is not how such games works, it's about getting wealthy, powerfull and influencial in the community as any mmo game, it's about domination, again making buying staff, whenever it's cash, ship, modules a damn pay2win.
@rayaan6951 as was stated in the video. Your earned items can and will be reset. If I buy it with real-world money, I get to keep it forever. Also 300 to multi thousand dollar items is monetization
@@insanelyberserk3778 The wipes have actually become quite rare. I bought several ships in the game and still own them, even though several patches have already been released. The money is still there too. Everything that has to do with ‘long-term persistence’, so to speak (and that includes e. g. ships, armour or weapons), was not wiped lately. And as soon as SC reaches version 1.0, wipes will be a thing of the past anyway, if not sooner. And as for your ‘300 to thousands of dollars’ statement: You only need one starter pack and it's enough if you only have the cheapest one. Everything else is optional! Means no one's forced to pay extra or something like that.
@@insanelyberserk3778 well yeah that's how they fund their project, that's like saying "Star Citizen getting funded will forever keep me away from it." How else is it supposed to grow
I've played Starlancer on PC (and on my Dreamcast) and absolutely loved it. Then came Freelancer and that open world was mindblowing and I spent hours on single- and multiplayer. Both were Chris Roberts games but I heard he got fired from developing Freelancer because it was taking him forever to finish it and he required a lot of money. I bought a ship for about 40 dollars at the start of SC and I used to check in once in a while. What you said Luke; it's a great pitch but for me the content is lacking and development is crazy slow. I also didn't enjoy the fanbase's cultish and addictive tendencies. When the game is released, some years from now, I can see myself logging in and see my 40 buck ship getting destroyed after launch by a 50 dollar missile from a 1000 dollar frigate just for a laugh.
It's always interesting to me how outside gamers looking in think Star Citizen is going to work. You all see dollar signs in everything more than CIG does. $50 missile lmao, does it come with LTI?
Yeah people have gotten weirdly culty around this game. Like you said the content is lacking and it won't get better. How do I know? Because it turns out empty space is kind of boring, who knew. The tech is extremely impressive but that "trick" impresses people just a few times, but content keeps them around. Also just from a pragmatic stand point the "fly anywhere" stuff creates sooooo many issues. Trolling in this game is going to be brutal and maybe even make it unplayable on its own.
I've been vaguely aware of Star Citizen, since it's mentioned a lot, but I never looked into it myself. This video is blowing my mind. I'm now very excited about it. Glad I saved 11 years of waiting. Hopefully it won't be 11 more!
@@odonovan I didn't know that. As I said, I was vaguely aware of the games existence. I went to check it out, but I don't want to pay that much for an unfinished game. This pay-to-win stuff has me a little concerned. I'll try it on a free fly week.
@@scully4lifeHonestly, its not really pay to win. The absurdly expensive ships just exist as a way for whales to make a massive donation to support the funding of the game. It is absolutely a better idea to buy the $45 pack and earn the money yourself ingame, its faster than working a real job to afford the pricing of ships (you can earn 1.5m per run trading illegal cargo, which would buy you the eqivalent of a $100 ship for maybe 20 minutes work, granted it takes a while to get to that point) , and is undoubtedly way more fun than just entering your card info and skipping loads of gameplay.
Hey Luke, just a note. At release and still currently you will be able to purchase all ships in game(other than ones in concept) minus a couple capital ships that players won’t be able to buy but build. I personally don’t see it effecting the economy, only real perk is not having to re-grind for them and the warranty If you fail to pay your insurance. Yeah it will be a forever contentious point for players, never going to go away. But I’m sure they will balance the cost of reclaiming ships bought with real money to make it more punishing if you don’t have insurance. But they won’t ever stop selling ships even if SC becomes a monthly subscription like most other MMO’s.
Been away since Xeno - nothing worked then (other than bounty missions). You are correct, this isn't a game, it's a feature test sandbox for Chris's ego. 10 F ing years - that's bullshat - you have an obligation to deliver a product to the person in a reasonable time, not feature creep the project indefinitely.
Yes and no. Incredibly cool systems that are just flat out impressive, but for what really. Starcitizen is going to be the text book study on unnecessary features in games. In other words, Starfields loading screens aren't what made it mediocre.
@@SpartanArmy117 the loading screens WERE one of the major drawbacks of Starfield and what you deem unnecessary features is for other precisely that level of immersion that other games so utterly lack. If it help to keep the Fortnite minmaxers or the Call of Duty bunnyhopping crowd away... even better.
Would like to briefly add context that CIG clarified; store bought ships will be Tier 1, meaning that crafted vessels will more than likely always be better even if just one higher tier, however all of that ends up working With that said.. that probably means they won't stop selling the ships either cuz it will always be a shortcut
Ok heres the thing about purchased ships. No one. And i mean no one, unless they bought tens of millions of dollars in credits from CIG is going to be able to field these nassive ships day 1. You have to pay for upkeep, ammo, fuel, crew, your hanger, etc.
OMG GUYS!! It’s never been done before! Give them the time they need to do what we all really want! Most studios take forever and then push out trash that needs 10+ updates to be what they promised! Let them take their time to make a game LIKE NEVER BEFORE!
12 years? Really at a cost of 730 million. No company would let them do that because the odds of it ever making 1 penny is next to impossible. It could be a hit and sell 6 million copies and the company would still go broke. You need a mega hit. Those don't come along every day. At $60 they'd need to sell 12 million and they still don't break even. Not every game is Elden Ring in sells. Good games might sell 3 million. You only need to sell this at a $243 a pop to get 730 million back. Good games are not all mega hits.
@@CaseyLynn-i7u people are GIVING them this money, there's no cost at all. You need to go learn about crowd funding and how bottomless the pit of hope can be.
@@CaseyLynn-i7u I would agree if it was a company giving them the funds but it’s not. Like my friend above says, it’s crowd funded. I believe in this game and it’s ok if others don’t…but let’s just see what else they do before assuming it’ll never come out. How can you still say with a straight face "yeah the game is still some years away" and expect to be taken seriously. This game's fanbase is a cult man.
This comment section is full of die hard defenders who will never escape the copium fog. I've spent money on this game, more than I wish I had, and to anyone curious or interested: Do. Not. Buy. SC is a buggy to the brim unstable mess. It will punish you for doing anything of any scale, missions will not work, AI teleport through walls and floors. Buy literally any other sci-fi game if thats what you're after.
What I don't understand is why there are so many people so desperate to see it fail. And the moment anyone says literally anything positive they immediately jump into calling them cultists or spamming buzzwords like 'copium' to mischaracterize them. I've been playing since 2016 on nothong but the starter package and have had way more than my money's worth of fun. Way better than starfaild.
I think it's hilarious how you see a bunch of people who just enjoy the game saying positive things about it and think "oh man look at all these die hard defenders!"
10+ years of development time on this game. 2 more years, I may not even be alive to see this thing in it's full glory. I only bought the basic package when it was announced, and I'm glad I didn't get into buying all those ships. I hate how they monetized it and I think that's a HUGE reason why we are still waiting for this game to have a FULL release.
Every year they add a truck load of features and content while showing off tons more and yet somehow there still manages to be a group of salty trolls who say there is no game or call it a scam. It boggles my mind how so many people can have such out of touch and uninformed opinions and be so confident in being incorrect but then I remember flat earthers exist.
As a $60 Kickstarter backer from 2012 I don't get too wrapped up in the drama. It will be done when it's done and in the meantime I play once in a while. Nice video!
It's crazy that I went through 3 hardware upgrade iterations ever since I bought Star Citizen (from the startup). I also have a 11 year old daughter and got married and I'm on my 4th car. I miss my 2010 self, less care, more free, almost 15 year younger.
So I know nothing about this game, but as someone just throwing out ideas would a switch to buying ships/insurance with a currency fix this? This is what throne and liberty has done, all of the items are purchasable with a premium currency, but you can also sell items you have found for this same currency. This means if you get a good drop you can go sell this item for the equivalent of hundreds of dollars. I have probably made over 300 dollars of in game currency for free in that game. This allows whales to do their thing, normal players to grind for it, and it would help with the economy aspect.
25:21 The ships you buy are tier 1 ships with the highest craftable tier now being tier 5. You're getting a basic ship with your real money. Still a significant advantage, but it's going to be a viable economy still from what they talked about.
Yeah its looking good . I mainly hyped for the single player version of the game Squadron 42. I wonder if in the future the aliens for multiplayer are gonna be playable that they show in the Squadron 42 trailer . The only disappointment for me was preferred the older controls for the game over the newer.
My buddy has put in close to - if not over - 10k into SC. He's a software dev and can afford it, and he looks at it like this: Star Citizen is his hobby. He's setting it up to be his "forever game". Like a lot of people who have played WoW since it launched, he's planning on doing that with SC. He buys the massive ships b/c he's putting together an org and wants to be off and running as soon as 1.0 drops.

Same here but now I’m glad it’s taking long because as a stay at home dad I won’t have time to play until they get older lol
i was also 29, and have been logged in fairly often since they released the hangar module, had tons of fun since 2014-2015, and still enjoy playing, also 40 years old
You'll write a similar comment at age 51... Or Microsoft has taken over in the meantime and you'll be playing the game... One of the two...

To be fair you can actually see everything get fleshed out. It's a VERY different game from what it was in 2016
Nah it's in polishing phase. I think the 2026 date is actually going to happen this time
You gotta take the current context of things into consideration, the game finds itself in a much better place now, 2016 game was facing a recent engine migration, lower headcount and so on
Now we have 900+ devs, pretty clear path going into 1.0 and Squadron 42 launch with many tools to work with (including the upcoming Genesis). The future looks way more promising
i think its worth the £34 i paid for it
I got Star Citizen a few months ago.

(More likely, 2031 or so.)
So I made a bet with myself. Starships en route to Mars before Squadron 42 is released. Humans on Mars before full release of Star Citizen. I have a friend who's put money into SC, and he refused to take either bet, lol.
@found6393, SC started development in 2013. The initial Kickstarter was in October of 2012.
too bad for you because both are fake
Lmao if you believe that they will be launching a full human crewed mission to mars by 2026 then wow, you need to touch some grass...
They have only JUST been able to catch a rocket with the idiotic chopsticks. They have somewhat of the shell of a rocket and nothing else... there is no design or architecture for the interior where the astronaughts would have to live for months on end. They have done NO human trials of what that much time is zero G would even do to a human body. Starship has NO ABORT method which will mean they will never be able to fly NASA astronaughts which means having to train your own astronaughts. Then there is the simply fact that it's literally less than 2 months from 2025.... they haven't even finalized or began building the totally stupid and insane "elevator."
Sorry dood but Elon isn't a god.
Musk should have done the game instead haha
both overestimate ability and skill to deliver on time.
27:12 wasn't an 890jump, that was a 400i. Although similar in design language, the 890j is much larger.

Nope, that prologue for the game was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to play the full version of the single-player game whenever it releases. It is top tier amazing. Really impressed.
"We'll stop selling ships when the game is done" is a very easy promise to keep. After all, it's entirely up to them when it's 'done.'
They would have no issue transitioning to a cosmetics-based monetization strategy at that point, but it could go either way
@@austin962 I could see that. But they could also do both like they already are.
It really improved my fps
Edit: Dont go into this game expecting it to be a star wars action esque game but as a space simulator.

I believe they had the misplaced and casted a whole bunch of actors like YEARS ago
They no longer wipe AUEC hangars unless something really messed up on the back-end. Generally the ships that you pay for in-game will be kept between wipes, as well.
Just make sure they’re not destroyed, hangaring your ships before a patch as always 😂
To hopefully help put the $730 million headline in perspective:
- with over 5.3 million game accounts, assuming every one of them has the bare minimum aurora + SC game package ($45) that alone makes up $250 million of the revenue they've made, so more than 1/3 of the game's revenue over 12 years came from just people buying the base game offering.
They are running out of money
They promised Freelancer 2 in a persistent universe with 100 starsystems and NPCs driving the universe and story.
They now aim to deliver a survival sandbox that is player driven with 5 starsystems.
Definitely NOT what people paid over 700 millions for.
I'm from Korea, and I've spent 705 USD on Star Citizen. It still got no official Korean translation.
Some says that Star Citizen is a scam. They also point out that some officials in CIG already done some scams. However,
What I've seen until now since I first played Star Citizen, This is what I think : Even if this is a scam, it still worth all my money.
Actually a good description of the game and the company :D
I do love the rainbow chasing myself, but I feel weird watching citizencon and people clapping at basic systems that existed in other games 20 years ago.
I like the way you’ve phrased this. Some people won’t understand but chasing rainbows for 9 years has brought me a lot of joy and entertainment.
just play it in english, i am dutch and honestly i never expect a dutch translation of the game. There are hardly any games with dutch translations.
It's been almost 15 years 😂
@@kwisatzhaderach1458 Which is hardly any amount of time in Game development.
@@germanmoscahardly? Wtf are you on?
I remember one of my friends got 30 million right off the bat cause he said a joke in chat ans a rich fella really liked it xD
I still have my 890 I bought from last year. Rarely use it but it's still cool to have.
If $730m sounds like a lot of money for a game, remember that Skull & Bones cost $100m more than that.
yeah and CIG has done revolutionary things with their funding compared to the hot garbage Ubisoft managed with their funding
😲 seriously!?

But, at least it wasn't "our" money. That's the big difference. Hopefully this game do comes out the alpha
@@BlackVampyr You aren't forced to back, so unless you willingly backed this project then it isn't "your" money. If you did back then you did so willingly. What's the problem? I’d say 343 is the real Halo killer
Any ships purchased on the store can not be lost, they have perma warranty one of the community managers came out and talked about it to clarify
I have no issues with how pledging ships work. If you want to contribute to development, buy a ship. If you don't like the ship, you're able to melt it down and get a different one for the same value. I've used the same pledge to try out like 8 different ships over the years.
This 100%. I use a Chrome extension to track my spending and my total store credit spend is negative because of this.
Virgin
They said it was feature complete last year, not content complete.
That's actually a big difference. Feature complete means the mechanics of the game, all the features necessary to run through it are done. So, like, one example would be fire propagation and extinguishing.
Content complete would mean that the game is *done* done. And that was not what they said.
They also said they're going into the polishing phase. You don't polish something that's not complete.
My guy trying to make excuses lmao. Trust me, I am a Star Citizen fan but I've been away since probably February/March... They contradict themselves a lot.
Feature complete. Falls through planet.
@@angelmelko google what "feature complete" means. Protip: it does not mean polished.
Good point, but to be fair, "content complete" can mean anything from "great game already, we just want to add some cherries on top of the pie" to "not really enjoyable yet to play for the average gamer."
By 2026 I might be able to afford a PC that will run Star Citizen properly. Looks pretty awesome though, doesn't it?
@IWatchYouFromAfarOfficial, I play SC with no problem, on a very mid-range PC, at 1080P. Just make sure you have a decent video card (doesn't have to be top of the line) and plenty of memory (32 GB or more is best). Make sure you run it off a SSD and not a hard drive. You should be fine.
Wait until they migrate the entire game to a new engine in a couple of years, thus delaying the release again (until they wait for another new game engine to shift to)
Not with the way Nvidia is going 😂

yeah the date reveal was a little bit of a mood killer for some of us long time backers
but
there is a video out there on youtube that compares the hour long video this year to the tease released last year, and there is polishing on the visuals, to a crazy degree
Since the quality was a 10/10 this year on those updates, I'm happy to wait to 2026
I hope they improve the FPS combat.
Oh, so they didn't rehash the same videos they have done in past Cons? At least they got one thing right - calling the event a Citizen CON!

Might as well call it a scam. Equal substance, fewer words, time saved for everyone.
what you said was equally dishonest lmao
You put it well that SC is a hobby for many, it's less a game and more a passion that people fall in love with and spend their time and money on
Maybe - but that doesn't negate the obligation for RSI to release something to people who paid money and expect something for their investment.
And the begellion dollar question of - will the game be FUN for most people when it's finished?

Unlucky time to start. After crunch time devs are forced to take time off so it takes abit to debug. To make it worse 3.24.2 uses code that is very new to the game as a whole and will be more janky then usual.
The important thing about 1.0 is how little of the game it will have in it, dozens of things still missing and NPC crew and advanced NPC behavior is not even on the list and already confirmed to be not a priority and getting worked on sometime after 1.0
@@MrImmortal709Sure and that is the type of stuff that he would discuss if he watches it.
...because they have been so honest and on the mark with all their other timelines. Okay.....
Also, look again: that system they implemented to organize your org and friends list is better than in most MMOs.
the aurora has 3 scu of external storage you can fit big crates on it^^
what game devs have completely underrated for years at this point is the importance of aesthetics and player investment into lore.
Quick remark: the game ISN'T playable. At least by normal people standarts.
Adding to that, the game isnt a game! Not by normal people's standards.
With 4.0. Can you rent NPS´s in a 400$ ship to shoot turrents or fix components? Or is it useless without a friend or two?🤣
Bigger ships = bigger costs of running, bigger insurance fees, fuel and repair costs, so in my opinion buying biger ships with real money will cost you more money in game
Sure but if you wanted a big ship that's months worth of grinding just skipped cause you pay for it
@@coldshock5181 You'll have a ship you can't use cause you'll need 5-10-20 people to run it. Just the fuel costs will prevent you from using it
@@alex_panthea What about when AI crews come out?
I want to add some miss conception here :
- Server wipe ( Ship, In Game Credits ) only apply because the game is on testing state, once 1.0 release, there will be no wipe.
- Bigger ship doesnt mean better ship if only manned by 1 crew, its harder to maintain, and take times much longer to respawn ( if destroyed )
- All real money ship is tier 1, to upgrade it to better tier ( up to tier 5 ) you need to progress it in game
the last point is still bad imo. a big Ship should be valuable.
- Server wipe ( Ship, In Game Credits ) only apply because the game is on testing state
So there have been server wipes during those 10+ years of development? that must really suck (for people who didn't pay for ships)
And only gets better and more in depth every year. In that last year alone we got a crazy amount of content and updates.
@@GrimGatsby That only continues to break the game! XD

Putting thousands of dollars in a game is kinda pathetic tbh
Tbh, people do it all the time with other hobbies or subscriptions over a decade. It just looks bad out of context and because of assumed P2W.
@@elibrainless90 what he does with his money is not your concern, it's literally a hobby like any other.

I have no idea if all the money thrown into this game is worth what it is as of today, but this journey sure is something I would not eexpect to see actually happening
I may even finally join the community and give my contribution, whatever it goes to
It's soon a new Free Fly event, so you can test the current alpha before you make a decision :)
If you bought in back in 2018 and expected them to somewhat follow a roadmap and be playing SQ 42 in 7 years - you are going to be VERY VERY VERY disappointed.
dont give these liars money, come on now
Try the international Aerospace exhibition (IAE) end of November, its free for two weeks and you can simply see yourself.
My wife left me and took my kids when she found out i spent 50k on this game

They sold me when the guy on the stage said we could build our own capital ship. Hell, I'm a fan of Supership or Capital Ship (large-size ship) and I'm definitely buying this game when it comes out.
I hope you have 100 friends to help you crew it! Definitely consider joining an organization when you do start playing.
What monetization? The game is in development, if you want to back the game then you can do so for a reward, but everything is still earnable in game

The tech is extremely impressive but that "trick" impresses people just a few times, but content keeps them around. Also just from a pragmatic stand point the "fly anywhere" stuff creates sooooo many issues. Trolling in this game is going to be brutal and maybe even make it unplayable on its own.
