Don't tell me it's "too soon" to discuss policy after a shooting. For the victims, it's too *late*
I know, right?! Screw thoughts and prayers, how about busting out the old legislators and getting some laws that might prevent most of those countless upcoming gun murders? Japan confiscated guns *and* swords at one point, Australia implemented gun control and it works fine for them... just... it's global warming denial all over again. ^^;;
@@hazukichanx408 Confiscating guns infringes upon the 2nd amendment, and is an easy go to solution. Why not sit down and discuss solutions that do not take away from the rights of the people?
+James Wood - Okay, let's discuss. For starters, I said Japan, where they do not *have* the 2nd amendment. Also, you do know that simple solutions are often considered ideal? Yes? No? Well, moving right along.
Thanks to the aforementioned amendment, people in the US have the right to own a tool specifically designed to kill living things at a distance, with little or no accountability that they can and will use it responsibly for things other than, say, some form of murder or massacre. Now, I will freely admit, most gun owners don't go on killing sprees. You can tell, because there are people still alive in the US.
Anyways, having that right to a variety of easily-obtainable, poorly regulated firearms no doubt comes in handy for those who hunt, but hunting-related weapon licenses are hardly non-existant in countries with gun control. You and your gun-owning buddies would have to jump through a few more hoops, yes, in exchange for which the genuine lunatics would have a hard time obtaining firearms at all.
To sum up, it's not a matter of taking all the guns away forever, just making sure they're used responsibly. If you have a legitimate use for a killing tool, you'll still be able to get one. If you just want to feel like a boss, well... you're not, because with this system, everyone else has one too, and whoever actually takes a shot at you, if anyone ever does, will probably be better with their gun, or take you by surprise, or some other predictable twist of fate, and you'll be just as dead as if you were unarmed, plus as a person with a gun in your hand, you'd be a *far* higher priority target. It's like people automatically assume it's got to be all or nothing; either every mentally unstable 3-year-old must be allowed an uzi, or nobody is allowed to even rent a BB gun. All gun control laws do is try to make sure the wrong people don't get guns.
You could argue that guns are needed for self-defence, if you like. Problem with that being, one of the primary killers of gun-toting americans is... drum roll! Gun-toting americans. So the main reason you need the right to those guns, at this point, is because this crazy right gives everybody guns. Vicious circle, see?^^
@@hazukichanx408 You do know what the Bill of Rights was put in the Constitution for right? They are rights afforded to all people, not rights handed down by the government. These are rights specifically put in the constitution for the government not to touch. Because for any working democracy, you have to have the people to keep it in check. There are crazies out there who will break the law, but that is them as an individual choosing to take the free will of other individuals, and they should be punished alone.
@@DrTocan ...dude, you can just look at who the KKK votes for, and which regions of the country vote GOP. Protip - you can clearly see they switched from blue to red, at the same time.
The kicker is _"we haven't buried _*_our_*_ dead"_, if any one of those poor nine souls had lost their lives at the end of a police officer's gun, even on video, you would have been scrambling to find an unflattering picture of them on the internet with which to impune them or their grieving families. So to call them _"our dead"_ is frankly disgusting.
They'd have a picture of them with a nerf gun just to justify the officer's action
Thank you. I'm starting my channel addressing such topics
I find it odd that people who call themselves patriots of the United States are so keen on defending the Confederacy.

Purvi Patel Yea and they lost. I don't get why everyone is so keen on kicking them in the teeth for it.
God Damn I miss John Stewart! I never got tired of Fox News being put in their place

Jon is more skilled at showing the hypocracy of the right wingers in concise humorous language. Trevor is good but they use slightly different vocabularies and exposition to get their points across.
I don't know why people want to hang on to a losing symbol. The confederates lost the war.

The vast majority of Americans killed by police are white men.
It really is. I saw a dreamer case. Where the dreamer was a young white blue eyed, girl. She was brought into the country as a child but her parents were unable to obtain a green card for her. So by law on her 21 birthday she was to be deported as is done with so many others. Yet because she was young, white, blue eyed girl, a senator stepped in and arrange that she be given the permanent right to stay until she obtains a green card.
My reaction was WTF. Is that even legal? America regularly deports young all american adults because they have no legal status in the country. And you can bend the law over backwards to do this?
Typhon And if there were an equal number of Black and White people in the United States you *MIGHT* have had a point there.
Yeah sure. A dickhead cop is a dickhead cop if you're white. Conversely, white people can be holier than thou to cops like black or any other human being. Stop thinking racism is in every single thing.

Ahahahaabaha yes
Why is the issue of the Confederate flag just now a problem? Why wasn't this taken care of years ago?
AlmostLeroy It boils down to this: Hillary is rapidly losing ground to Bernie. Not critically but sufficient to make her side question how they'll survive the debates. Her record doesn't match her rhetoric or the Dem platform, but this is an issue that will fire up the New England Liberals and single issue black voters. She comes out against this knowing the Repubs are after the same single issue black voters. She gains in the polls while the panicked positions taken by the Repubs camouflages the fact that this is a non-issue. If this had happened later in the campaign it'd have been a masterstroke but this will only last 2 weeks or so. Maybe she can surf the aftershock for a month or 2 but it won't carry her thru the debates, let alone to election day. She'll still have to fight hard to win the primary and the rest of us have to deal with a month of race baiting for nothing.
***** It doesn't have feeling, but it's a representation. Same with not keep the Nazi flag, it doesn't have feelings, but it's a symbol of racism and discrimination.
AlmostLeroy To a lot of Southerners, the Confederate Flag represents resistance to armed invasion, hence, it becomes associated with defense of homeland, which is why the pride they feel for the flag trumps the association with the culture that flew it. The flag is a memento that the South fought an army intent on revising their lifestyle, which is largely in keeping with American national spirit in general. That the South lost only reinforces this desire to protect it as a way of preventing apathy and eventual acceptance of the Northern way.
I'm not endorsing this perspective, I'm just explaining it. To non-Southern states, the flag is a representation of a racist culture, but to Southerners, it's a representation of a plucky, independent people fighting a larger enemy to defend its way of life...and that's hits some deep, sensitive nerves that provoke pretty intense response which is why so few politicians have been willing to risk addressing it.
coffee lover I wonder how natives feel about the American flag... considering.
Sacrilege83 Excellent question.
Jon Stewart, thank you for getting it and deciding to be an advocate for us. It's much easier to pretend like race issues don't exist when you don't have to endure being treated like an alien from outer space on a daily basis due to the color of one's skin. I really appreciate that part when the girl is just stroking someone's hair without permission. How many white people have strangers just come up to them and stroke their hair. Such an intimate act having your hair stroked. Meanwhile I endure this invasion of personal space almost daily, multiple times through out the day by several offenders.
Can I ask, would Americans vote for John Stewart if he were to run for President? Serious question from a Brit!
No
Yes because he knows about corruption in our government and does not like it!
Ben McCann No.
Lol, why are people saying no? America is fucking stupid.
Perhaps he could win. , especially in the next upcoming election with another Bush and another Clinton as front runners. Stewart /Colbert ticket would be unstoppable.

Jessica Williams is amazing.
I'm a white guy in Georgia and that flag is still a warning sign for me.
I appreciate knowing that. My mom had to tell a friend's brother what that means to black people, which he thought just represented being a rebel.
I come back to this video every year or so. Every time it hurts more knowing things have gotten worse.
"The bodies aren't even cold?" This may just be my opinion, but I think it's crucial to have a prevention plan to make sure incidents like it don't happen again. We'll have plenty of time to mourn when justice prevails in whatever form it needs to take

Guns don't kill people, people do.
So why the hell would you want people to have guns then?!
Straight facts!!
Actually bullets kill people. guns just make it easier
Why do we give soldiers and policemen guns if it's people that kill people?
People have guns to protect themselves from other people and from their government in case they ever try to make unjust laws which is our duty as Americans. As Thomas Jefferson said "it is every Americans duty to contest laws that they do not find just", and to do that we need guns
Quinn Marlett so should a schizophrenic have a gun? How about a felon who’s committed domestic assault? Should they have guns? I don’t get why people are so against gun laws. You would still have your guns as long as you aren’t a nut job with a record. Did you know Switzerland has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership yet they haven’t had a mass shooting in 18 years! And guess what they have gun laws! We don’t have gun laws and yet we have had over 200 mass shootings in the past decade alone.

+lukassnakeman HUGE difference between guns and bombs. Try again.
The difference being, the Constitution doesn't guarantee my right to a bomb.
No way, they're way too different. Bombs cause large-scale damage, and in self defense it would probably kill the user.
+Nick Carlson if you bring an ak47 to 1776 I wouldn't be surprised if they mistook it for something more than a gun
+lukassnakeman Nuclear bombs.
2017... Several Mass shootings later, the latest one in Florida...17 gone and nothing changed. Excuses and empty words. No action.

And for clarity, the below comment was intended to be (clear) sarcasm. I keep forgetting normal people lack perspective and take this at face value.
========
Why would anyone want to hang onto the confederate flag? Here's a better question. Why would people want to hang onto the Nazi flag?
Such a system was deeply racist and committed numerous atrocities under the impression that it was right. The German people, the men who were forced into the war to fight fanatically with pride in their own country and prove their worth or be worm food beneath a Russian or American tank's tracks. With the war over, the German soldiers, pilots, and sailors were the good men on the wrong side of the fence ready to shoot our own men. They did as they were told and had no choice, the same as we did, the only difference is they're not alive to write their version of history.
What of the revolutionary war? The _____ couldn't do what they wanted, were taxed and couldn't do anything about it. Ruled by a strict governing body where their own law makers had seemingly no power. Wanting their slaves to run plantations while their 'oppressors' abolished slavery. While their own leader in their revolution was a slave owner himself.
Now what was the blank filled in with? Was it Colonies or States? I can't seem to remember but it makes all the difference on who was the bad guys despite being identical. Here's a hint, one is lead by traitors and the other are glorious patriots.
Now make all of this about the civil war and everyone bickers about racism and nothing but racism. People love to rub the right wing's ignorance in their face, while being ignorant of the South's history summed up in half a paragraph in their history books they barely read in high school. Was the South racist? Yes, that's indisputable as a whole.
War does not determine who is right, war determines who is left.
If we Dont hold onto our world history we WILL repeat it. Learn from it, Dont tear it apart.
buddy read history becasue the confederate flag u think is the confederate flag is not. its the Virginia regiment flag that they ised in battle not a symbol of hate and slavery. if u want me to get in the polytocks of the civil war i will matter in fact the only reason y abe lincoln freed slaves was to ruin the southern economy. slavery is a bad thing i dont agree with it at all and at that time the Virginia state government was working to abolish it. and if the north was great y did they have three slave states in the north. and y did union general ulyess s grant own slaves even after the war was over!!! also read up on irish slavery even worse then blacks in 1700s. the only difference was that irish were never enslaved by the US
Ryan Kubosh Thank you. I'll admit I don't know the most about this topic but I know more than high school education "south is pure evil" bullshit
that's exactly what this country doesnt need ur making generalizations about people u probably never met. im a southerner from texas im not racist at all type in my last name and u will find my grandfather fighting for all races in houston texas. when someone says something like that bout my home i get aggravated so y say that? ill let it pass but hate is not needed. it takes two to tango buddy meaning theres always two sides to every story.
Ryan Kubosh Wasn't it worked into the Confederate flag though? I thought it used to be the blue with the white star but it was changed to something different, and then changed to the white with the regiment flag in the corner. Plus, how could Abe free the slaves and ruin the southern economy if the south wasn't part of the U.S. anymore? The United States laws wouldn't even apply to the South.
I actually think Jon should run for president. Especially if he does it ironically.
Damn this episode really brings the beef to the table 👊🏽😉
Dayum.. that's some good shit! Love how clearly the silencing/not hearing is called out.
Does Germany still fly the Nazi flag?
Bet some do lol
+plgni Which is a disgrace.
F*** no! and it's illegal too
Howard Bailey so should the damn confederate flag
here's the thing, in Germany, students are given extensive history lessons about their Nazi past, warts and all whereas down South kids are taught the lie that the confederacy had nothing to do with slavery, and that slavery, was really no big deal. and all the confederate flags and statues to their "heroes" are nothing more than reminders to the local black population, who's still in charge, and to keep submissive... and watch their manners.

Your second point is just ludicrous. While it's true that mental retardation and skin color are not choices people make, that's where there similarities end. It would be cruel to look down on a retarded person, but it is commonly a pitiful state to inhabit, requiring special accommodations for education, hygiene, and often legally prevents someone from doing things we all take for granted, like getting married, driving, voting, etc. Comparing that to skin pigment makes very little sense - especially since discrimination and segregation are often natural and necessary consequences of the condition.
Seriously, guys? You make a simple remark about a missed joke a thread about retardation? Wow.

Watching this days after the mass shooting in Las Vegas and it's just a reminder how the rhetoric of conservatives about "politicizing" these tragedies, advancing agendas, and bringing up gun bans/regulation will just continue to be brought up time after time. Which gun-related tragedy is going to be the right one and the right time to talk about these issues and actually do something about it?
I think it is so said that the South respects the Confederate Flag so much. If I was a working class white man whose working class white ancestor fought and died for that flag in the civil war i would be pissed as fuck. I know my ancestor was fighting for slavery, a system that only made like 5% of southerners rich and took away jobs from deserving hard working southerners. The south should be way more pissed about slavery because they died for something they, the common people, barely used at all. The people that actually used slavery were the rich rich land owners that prolly didnt have to be on the front lines of the war.
except they weren't fighting for slavery
Texas was fighting because Texas.
Yeah, no. You have a pretty distorted version of History there, mate. Lincoln chose to act because he wanted to keep his country united. After Lincoln was elected, the Southern states threw a fit because Lincoln was a known abolitionist. They gathered around and unilaterally (that means, without consulting the other party in the situation) decided to secede. They basically formed an armed insurrection against their country because they didn't like the outcome of the election. Of course Lincoln fought back, since he wasn't about to watch half of his country walk away, especially because of an issue as heinous as slavery.
Yes, you're right. Slavery was on its way out, and was considered an out-dated and barbaric practice even by the 1860's. The NORTH understood that, hence why they kept pushing for industrialization and wanted to abolish slavery once and for all and be done with it. The SOUTH, willingly chose to be on the wrong side of history and to hold on to their outdated ways, causing an armed revolt against their own country because they refused to join the march of progress. "Northern Agression" my ass. If anything, it should be called the "War of Southern Stupidity".
MrConstantine02 The North knew in 1790s, New York got rid of their slaves in the early 1800s, partly in reaction to Hamiltions death. Jefferson is part of the reason that slavery continued so long in the south. The reasons for the war can be seen in Hamilton and Jeffersons fights in the first presidential term. The war was inveitable because of slavery and because of the fight between liberatarian and federalist governments. though it must bed said that Hamilton saw the war coming in the federalist papers in 1787-8-9.
Rohan Antony damn right even after the end of reconstruction the white classes were still in poverty that continue into the civil rights movement era and when Martin Luther king jr was working in the fields he realized poor white people have it worse just as black people when in comes to being economically forced into poverty and realized they can coexist that inspired him. He did speak for socialism but wasn't a communist the fbi thought he was. Check listverse articles on Martin Luther king jr

A mass shooting happened. Now let's focus on this flag.
PentaMaker Gotta start somewhere. And these racists need to have their toys taken away.
Nathan Zimmerman
How about the American flag itself, I bet they like it too.
PentaMaker Well, first they focused on catching the killer. Since then, it seems natural to investigate the sick racist culture that creates twisted minds like that, and that culture happens to be united under a flag that symbolizes nothing but the fucked up.
Edward V
People should have not focused on the killer and turned him into celebrity. Also, I am pretty sure that the flag has nothing to do with today's racism in the world.
PentaMaker We're never going to do anything about mass shootings, so at least let's do something about racist symbology.
If Star and Bars is the symbol of racist and discrimination... then what does that make the Star Spangled Banner?
You know, the same flag that put blacks through segregation? The flag that locked up asian descents (not just japanese, if you looked japanese, you got locked up, pretty racist right?) in camps. The flag that created manifest destiny. The flag that dropped two nukes on a losing country (japan), the flag that ALSO had black slaves, the flag that didnt reprehend its black soldiers (40 acres and a mule), the flag that kept quiet on the Armenian genocide.
But the Confederate flag is just so evil right?
The One Who Knocks
Seems like America is a farcry to what it was conceived for then isnt it? Yet that doesn't erase the wrong doings under this flag. Do not mistake me for being in favor of the confederate flag, I'm not, but people need to stop pretending the deeds under the confederate are more atrocious than the deeds under the american flag. Its not about "who's worse". My only point is is that if the confederate flag is so bad that it must be taken down, the the american flag has just as much, if not more reason to be taken down along with it for all the reason people are stating why the confederate flag should be taken down.
DarkSpyro707 The United States stood for more than the dark parts of its history though. It isn't defined solely by its mistakes and the harm that it's done. In comparison, the only thing the Confederacy stood for was the desire to own human beings.
The One Who Knocks
Let me guess, you're on of those people who think the civil war was fought over slaves too right?

"HEY POT!" Hey Kettle!"
As someone who has studied in this particular sect of American history since the age of 5, I can say that the flag itself is not racist. Just because some people (such as the KKK) misuse it in their ignorance for said purpose, doesn't make the flag itself racist (just the fools who misuse it). It was a symbol of a people trying to achieve independence from what they saw as an oppressive rule, and whom fought to protect their homes. Those who misuse it are being foolish, but the same can be said of those who blindly assail a symbol of history whilst being equally ignorant. The slavery debate of the time was that times thin veil in the States Rights vs the Federal Government conflict that had been going on since the founding of our country. 3 out of every 4 white families in the south at the time of the Civil War didn't even own slaves to begin with. Many Generals from the Confederacy were also against slavery (such as Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee). You might be familiar with Robert Edward Lee (the most reknowned of Confederate Generals). He married the Great-Granddaughter of Martha Washington (George Washington's wife). The first thing he did after marrying her was free all of the slaves on the estate. So calling the symbol they fought under racist because of a proportionally small number of people misuse it is complete and utter nonsense. My apologies for the elongated comment. As for the flag outside the South Carolina, it was placed there in 1961, on the 100th anniversary of (beginning of) the Civil War to honor the men who fought and died fighting for what they believed in (which was freedom and independence, not slavery). This is coming from someone who despises ignorance and hatred (in this case the ignorance for BOTH the racists misusing the flag and the people who blindly saying it's racist because they don't know the history behind it or the sacrifice the men who fought under that flag made).
***** Oh and before you bring up the W.T. Thompson, know the flag he was referring to was the Stainless banner, as opposed to the square shaped "Southern Cross" used by The Army of Northern Virginia.
***** exactly it's really frustrating to try to explain to people it's a just a flag that like all flags is view differently by different by different people and was not made with evil in mind
***** Freedom and independence to own.......? ill let you finish tht.
Most people didn't own slaves, and some states in the Confederacy (such as Virginia) were already moving towards abolishing slavery. Every time someone talks about the Civil War the ignorant and foolish (as well as uneducated) always try to make it about slavery, when that was not the reason whatsoever.
So the flag in which at its conception was held at its highest in defense of segregation, and opposition to the United States, is jsut a simple representation of "southern pride". Those who died in the civil war for the racist south , cant really be remembered positively cause as far as history is concerned they were on the wrong side.
I'd vote for Jon
America, please, make this guy the next President.
I needed that laugh, I swear that is sooooo true
Anyone in 2019?
I FUCKING MISS YOU JON STEWART
STEWART/COLBERT FOR PRESIDENT!
This video is exactly the right amount of American sarcasm we need!
that girl is so fucking beautiful
true
She should be presenting the Daily show now and replace Jon. She's the funniest and beautiful.
+Allie Stewart i kinda agree...
Agreed. She should have been the new host. She's an amazingly intelligent person, and put this segment together in an extremely clever and comedic way.
2017 Sep, seems more relevant than ever.
How ironic is this episode, just over two years ago, plays on the situation today.
1:20 Ladies and Gentlemen, Jon Stewart, master of the comedic pause.
Don't hate me, just a question. Is Jon technically capitalizing on the shooting with this bit? Or is he just capitalizing on someone else's shameless capitalization(FOX) who is also mentioning someone else's shameless capitalization(Obama) on the shooting?
BoardWalkToke It's all the same thing, everybody makes money off of a tragedy it is the American way
***** peanuts
BoardWalkToke It’s the Daily Show. The entire premise of the show is based on making comedy from current events.
BoardWalkToke stewart knows who his audience is and how to play the game.....objectivity is not what they want to hear any more than hannity's audience or or limbaugh's......i used to like stewart, but like most he has let political correctness dominate his humor....
BoardWalkToke He's exposing the hypocriticism of others. Jon Stewart takes the piss out of everything though.
as a white person of the south i don’t claim anybody that owns a confederate flag can someone in the north plz adopt me
The north ain't perfect either, dear. Stay away from Boston😆
I love Trevor Noah, but I miss Jon Stewart so much.
What's amazing is how relevant this still is so long after airing
I love how nobody here seems to talk about the blacks that fought for the Confederacy.
Andrew Holstein Oh you mean the ones who were forced to because their families were threatened? Great thing to point out. You're totally right, that is horrible. Thanks for bringing it up.
Christian Schoff And the Union didn't force anyone to go? Plus, not everyone was "forced" either. Sure some were obviously, but not everyone. Which again, I don't see why you're generalizing the whole Confederacy.
I love how Christians don't like to talk about the fact that Jesus was a Jew but that is not relevant to the issue at hand here. So stay on topic.
Blacks fought because they thought if they won they would get their freedom.
Sure, a few dozen blacks that were most in most cases forced into serving in the confederate army due to threats against their families or their own welfare is a great counter argument for the millions that were enslaved against their will for hundreds of years. Please, tell us more about this. Who were the blacks in the confederate army? What were their reasons? Did they remain loyal to the south after the war was over? You obviously have studied the issue in depth and are definitely not talking out of your ass.
Wow, first time I have disagreed completely with Jon
Getting rid of the flag is as good as attempting to forget its history, both good and bad
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat
TheBlackSerpentBeta - Well we remember what the Nazis did and we don't have their flags flying around everywhere.
BlueHooloovoo
That's because its not a part of your heritage, is it
TheBlackSerpentBeta - Tell that to a Native American.
BlueHooloovoo
History is History
It speaks not to individuals and more to the country itself
TheBlackSerpentBeta - Yes the country is now aware enough that the Confederate flag has been co-opted by hate groups since the Civil War and now is stigmatized. Maybe if the Southern States made a better effort to stop hate groups from using the flag to promote white supremacy than it wouldn't be much of an issue in this case. It was their own ignorance of history that lead to the Confederate flag being maligned.
trevors cool, but man oh man do I miss Jon
"Officer, if I may. I'm White." LMFAO.
Am I the only one who likes Trevor better?
Literally nothing has changed - same commentary as today (post Church and Vegas)
If nothing happened after Vegas it will never happen.

"Stop moving your arms!" xD
Calling for more guns after a massacre is like calling for more heroin and dirtier needles when the number of heroin deaths are being broadcast.
