I opend my own box of Diamond Icons for a few years before things went crazy. At that time boxes went for 2000-2500, but with 8-9 autos, plus a relic card, I thought it was a better value over DEfinitive (the lower numbering helped, plus they had a better checklist). The addition of Betts this year makes it a bit more interesting, but Topps/Fanatics has made Diamond Icons more expensive with a more watered down checklist. Plus, they have created more high-end products (Gilded, Topps Sterling, etc) that has makes me thiink they need to consolidate the number of high-end sets (which will never happen). And my boxes were always quite good, where I felt I got reasonable value each year (Ichiro patch auto /5, Red Ink Red Parallel Juan Soto (on the Nationals), Derek Jeter diamond relic card, Shohei Red relic /5, Acuna patch auto /5, just to name a few).
@@SpitballinCards Very much so. The design asthetic of the past few years of their high-end products has been quite poor (because they are producing too much). Just think about how bad Gilded was this year with that 1970s hotel carpet design.
Based on my research, it’s going to be Ohtani’s 5th variation of autograph since he came to MLB. 1) Style he was using in Japan. He used it in some of his pitching image bowman chrome auto. If you search for his pitching superfractor auto, you’ll notice it’s similar to how he signed for 2016 2017 bbm products 2) Style he started using from mid 2018. Used for batting bowman chrome auto. In 2019, just in regular Heritage (not high number), he inscribed “17”. This style is also used for Chris’s favorite 2020 Stadium Club Chrome 3) In late 2021 he introduced version that looks like he just wrote two “3”s. You can see it in 2021 Dynasty and Transcendent. He probably didn’t like it and stopped using quickly 4) Current version 5) New one that Topps just announced
I collect auto cards primarily. And until watching spitballin never even though about mookie cause there weren’t autos out there. So it definitely hurt his collectibility.
Thanks for watching and confirming a theory. It stinks that there haven;t been Mookie autos for a decade. You wonder how many sets will have them this year. I want more info!!
So i might be an outlier in this thought. But I dont care what Ohtani's auto looks like as long as its on card autos. Have him hold the cards to sign them.
That's totally fair. i get that. Chris here - I was just thinking from a rarity standpoint, if he keeps signing like this for the next few years, there will be more cards with this auto than the any other. IDK. Either way, I'll probably try to stick with the early auto, but if I pull one of these new ones I'll be excited!
For mookie collectors this is great! I’m a JV collector and he hasn’t signed for over a decade but signed for 7ish years and I love that because still accessible but rare.
Haha. Shout out to Chris for calling out Scott on the last video. That bugged me. Let Jeff speak! (Still appreciate you, though, Scott.) Great show as always, guys.
@@warningtrackcards Scott here, I wasn’t even the one stopping Jeff. Phil and Ty were the ones who spoke first and I was just adding a thought before passing to Jeff😂
This feels like a Scottie B numbers video, but as you mentioned that it was almost like his cards were in the shadows the past few years, given he’s then out of sight from every RUclips Video, or IG post that would mention other players, it would be fascinating to compare his Market Movers Market Value over a set period of time (180 days) to other talent around him. Pick players around him for total Career WAR and maybe also players around him for recent Career WAR (last…. 3 years, since he got MVP votes these years, so that’s 19.8 WAR on Baseball Reference) and see the volume and amount of sales going on. For example, (avoiding the obvious Ohtani/Judge/Soto/Witt names as they have higher WAR and immediate ‘star name power’ in the hobby) Lindor 18.5 WAR the last 3 seasons Alvarez 16.8 WAR Gunnar Henderson 16.2 Ramirez 17.9 Freeman 17.4
Just to give you an idea of the head start Freddie has, I eBay searched their name and (auto, autograph) and looked at Sold Items and just in these last 90 days, 624 Freemans sold compared to just 23 licenced Topps autos for Betts. All the Five Stars, Heritage Real Ones and Trajectory autos.
@@scottiebcards2354 Very. Leaf does have a wide variety of high-profile personalities that sign for them (I am not a fan of Leaf overall), which I guess is used as a pitch for potential partnerships, but what the hell are Leaf paying per signature? Gotta be something silly. Not exactly like Mookie is in dire straits to add...
@ BTW, I was overall very surprised how well Mookie's Leaf autographs have sold. On a positive note, it's nice to see more casual fans/collectors be able to snag one of his auto's for a fairly reasonable price due to this.
I’m a basketball guy and it’s a stay away for me from Luka cards. The team that knows him best just passed on giving him a supermax sighting drinking and conditioning issues. He’s never healthy anymore. This could be a wake up call for Luka but it could also be the Sonics trading kemp in what seemed to be his prime.
@@SpitballinCardsOh... you guys were talkin' about Mahommes the other day... so I thought you might chat about the situation with Luka... thanks for the reply.
Great episode, much needed positive influx of news, nice job gents! As for Mookie: If he had 3rd and 4th year autos, I think those might see a dip with the new autos being released. But as you stated, the only on card autos prior to this were all rookie (or prospect). Can't see those taking a hit. It will certainly help Dodgers fans not have to break down and get a rookie auto and I think the big winner here might be his other Dodgers cards in general. Here's hoping he was held back for 2025 Series 2 to get some Flagship Real One autos.
Ohtani, Mookie, Freddie triple auto lineup card, with a cut out of a game used lineup card of Ohtani, Mookie, Freddie batting 1,2,3
Yes, please
Was waiting for this video. Giddier than a kid of Christmas with the Mookie auto news

Hopefully Lindor is next! I was pretty disappointed to see his logo man from Transcendent without an auto.
When is the last time Lindor had topps autos? 2020? Any since?
I also like Phil's take but with a twist.. lets take all the new Ohtani auto's, wipe them off and hand them to Ohtani and say "make it right" 😂
hhahaha
The moment I saw the news I could almost feel Scott throwing his fists in the air with Joy. Now the question is what cards will he sell to get one 😂
