My father in law was the biggest baseball fan. He watched every Reds game for 30 years. Went to games all the time. After the 94 strike he never watched a game again. It had a much bigger effect than you related to your younger audience on here. Things are different now and morals and backbones have shrunk so I agree it wont be as big of a deal.

I would say both are decent buys. I have some S.O rcs and like 15 gold cup second years from different releases and all seem pretty stable. I only have a couple of Mahomes 2nd year cards. This market is so volatile with injuries and stuff no one can predict anything with hardly any amount of certainty.

Good point about individual players stats during a possible strike. Some of these players could potentially be hindered by the Covid season and a potential strike. Greinke is a good example. HOFer regardless, but without the limited Covid season he probably would be in the 3,000 k club.

T-Pott is spot on. Buy both. Both are freaks and all-timers that will always be in the conversation for BOAT or GOAT... whatever metric you want to argue. Scott, youth tackle numbers are down but flag football numbers are rising. NFL is King now and in the future... and the only league where a majority of non playoff games are appointment viewing. To the entire panel, Mahomes rushing numbers don't matter. He had more rushing yards this year than his crazy 2018 MVP season btw. He only runs when the play breaks down and they've got to have it or to shock a defense in the playoffs that's not looking for a designed run. T-Pott, his play hasn't regressed, his numbers have regressed. BIG DIFFERENCE. Prime Kelce and Tyreek is a Madden video game. Worst drop rate and receiving core in 2023 leads to methodical dink and dunk. Same greatness. Same result. Super bowls. And this year they've made it back to the Super Bowl down their #1 receiver, without their #1 running back for most of the season, and the worst tackles in the league. According to PFF, Jawaan Taylor is ranked #62 and Wanya Morris (benched since week 15) is #71. Tough to do when there are only 64 tackle slots in the whole league. On the Andy Reid front, he was always a great coach, but he had the reputation as choking in the big game. Fair or not, Eagles were 1-4 in NFC championship games and 0-1 in Super Bowls. Chiefs only had 1 playoff victory in Reid's 5 seasons as Chiefs HC before Mahomes became the starter. In 19 seasons without Mahomes as starter Andy was 11-13 in the playoffs, with 1 trip to the Super Bowl, 0 championships, and a 1-4 record in NFC championship games. In 7 seasons with Mahomes as starter, Andy is 17-3 in the playoffs, with 7 consecutive trips to the AFC championship, 5 trips to the big dance, 3 Super Bowl championships. Coincidence?

I think the Ohtani/Mahomes comparison is interesting but honestly, I dont think you can compare the two. Ohtani will be remembered alone for his uniqueness, 2-way play, and global reach. Throw in 3 MVPs already with a few yrs left yet in his prime he just needs to get his counting stats up. As great as Mahomes has been when it comes down to it, he is just "another QB" (albeit VERY talented) who latched on to a team that knows and wants to win a ring EVERY YEAR. Are the championships he has won due to Mahomes or due to the system he is in and how well he fits? I think 2-3 of Brady's rings could be accounted for just that. Just think if Ohtani in 3-4 yrs is a closer hitting 40 bombs annual along with 30 saves. Who the hell else has ever done that? That would be like Mahomes throwing for 30 TDs but also kicking 30 field goals :-p

I think the thing shohei has going for him is that baseball has over 75 years of proven being a collectible. Baseball fans collect baseball. Football fans overwhelmingly invest in their players in other ways like gambling. The football card market hasn’t proven long term to be as much of an investment. Is baseball fans collect . Football fans day trade.

@ I love basketball probably most of any sport. But really don’t like the basketball or football hobby because it’s a lot of day trading and when a player retires unless they are jordan, Brady. Their cards seem to dip because collectors focus more on the ultra modern. Baseball collectors seem to appreciate all generations more. 70 years from now someone who never saw him play will be collecting shohei cards. We don’t know yet if any of the other sports will have that.

A key potential difference between Mahomes and Ohtani is their second act.
Mahomes had dominated in Act One, but what if we assume Kelce retires in the next 1-3 years and if Reid is gone in the next 5 years, what does a then 35-year Mahomes look like on a team with no Kelce or Reid. Does THAT Mahomes dominate his division, his conference, the League ?
So my thought is that Mahomes’ trajectory could collapse in Act Two.
Meanwhile, Ohtani has left his disastrous Act One with the Angels (lack of quality teammates - bar Trout - and coaching, lack of playoffs). Now, he has a variety of ‘Kelces’ alongside him and a manager who is currently successful but also still ‘young’ (14 years younger than Andy Reid). I see a world where Ohtani over the NEXT 7 years could be like Mahomes over his LAST 7 years (7 Division Titles, 5 League Titles, 3 World Titles and 2 MVPs).
Ohtani has had his struggles and is set up for a dynasty. Mahomes has his dynasty but it’s not impossible he and Chiefs could be struggling in a few years once key pieces go.

I think the Mahomes market is much safer. I feel this could be Ohtanis peak of value. What if he doesn’t pitch much moving forward.. where will his values go? What if he comes back to pitch and he’s good but not great? Can we really expect Ohtani to repeat the offensive year he just had and pitch like an Ace? I highly doubt it. Him pitching will make his offensive numbers go down. They will still be extremely good but not 50/50 good.
A lot of ohtanis value is in the speculation of having a year like he did in 2024 on the offensive side to go along with a dominant pitching season. Then repeating that for a few more years. That’s alot to ask for.

Before I even watch this, I already know this is about to be a banger. Really interesting comparison. If Mahomes wins his 4th this year, before even turning 30 years old, that makes things very interesting. He already has the MVPs. He has the SBMVPs. He has a 5000+ yard 50+ touchdown season.
Ohtani on the other hand has the 2 way player mystique going for him, the WS ring now, the MVPs, the 50/50 season, AND the international market.
I'll say this. My personal opinion is that Ohtani will age MUCH better than Mahomes. Mahomes has already put on weight, his arm has already begun to decline (his downfield passing stats are horrible the past 2 seasons), and the competition in the AFC is starting to really catch up.
I think Ohtani will continue to elevate from here as insane as that sounds. I don't see Mahomes doing the same. I think we've seen peak Mahomes already.

@@SpitballinCards I think Mahomes has the championships but Ohtani has the legacy. I personally think the whole "Ohtani is the GOAT" thing is a bit much, but I am a minority there by a **large** margin. Ohtani is the first 2 way player in like 90 years or whatever, created the 50/50 club, has a sub 3 ERA and is mashing at the plate, and the ring/s with the Dodgers will certainly help. I think the X factor here is Ohtani's collectability internationally though. He is the closest thing we have go Pokémon in baseball in that people globally are interested in him. He's like Jordan. I mean his PSA 10 base bowman batting rookie has 4,448 10s and is still selling for upper $900s. That is Ken Griffey level stuff and he's maybe halfway or slightly more than halfway through his career. It's nuts.
Mahomes is THE guy if you're into football though. But someone else made a good point in saying that Mahomes has a TON of haters. The whole "refs" thing. Whereas Ohtani is almost universally loved by any baseball fan.

A strike will really hurt the card market. It’d still be a year or two away but will turn ppl away from baseball like in 1994. If baseball is hurting then the card market will follow. But it all will come down to how long a strike would last. If we’re losing a month or two of an off-season then it’ll be minimal and very short term. If a season is lost then it’d really hurt like I suggested above

A strike would absolutely hurt baseball cards and it would take them time to recover, likely in the long term, if the season or most of the season is lost. Having been through the 94 strike, it did pop the bubble because interest left the sport (people were pissed at the players and owners) and thus baseball cards. It took the miraculous 98 McGwire-Sosa HR battle to help resurrect the sport nation’s interest and it took even longer for baseball cards to recoup. Fans hate strikes cutting into the season. Hopefully this can avoided.

I think the current narrative around Mahomes is that the Chiefs are being gifted these Championships by the league. It's easy to see how the league would financially benefit from them making it to the Superbowl as it was estimated that Swift brought in almost 400 million in extra revenue for the league just last year alone. With a league that does profit sharing it become fairly obvious that getting the Chiefs to the Superbowl is just really good business for every team in the league. We are currently dealing with a major gaslighting situation from the NFL media and quite frankly I think most NFL fans see through the BS. Im not certain this will have any affect on Mahomes prices long term but I think its something to consoder as most NFL fans despise the Chiefs because of the obvious bias the league has towards them

You don’t understand football cards Jeff, high school is when football playing starts not little league age. True collectors of football know that there’s more than QBs to collect, RC of wr, RB, line backer, TE all are coveted, there’s much more loyalty to the team than the individual player, unlike baseball where it wouldn’t matter if ohtani changed teams every year, his cards would still be bought, QBs now have such safety whe3ls on them now and there are no records being broke in a 17 game season. Only since 17 seasons mattered.

Football collectors have very short attention spans - see Montana, Rice, etc. In 20 years most fb collectors may have moved on from Mahomes to the new hot QB. Ohtani may have a late career/ early retirement years dip but will come back - like Griffey.
Though this could be wrong as there are far more young fb card collectors who may want their silver prizm 2017 Mahomes in 2045.

Remember, Mahomes only has to show up 17 times a season, vs the stats Ohtani has over like a million games a season (exaggerating)... Finding a comparable football WAR might skew things in a more obvious way. Aside from total Championship (SB and WS) wins, maybe Ohtani's numbers skyrocket him past Mahomes, consolidated over only 17 games. Thoughts?

It's from charging $400 a month for minimum coverage on someone with no insurance claims or accidents on their record. Plus u go the whole year without actually using the forced and receive no refund.
On top of getting richer off the endorsement I bet he gets free home and auto insurance.
We all know why he's disliked on the field and i dont think people realize these types of things. Why do they need commercials for something we are forced to buy? Quit paying these celebrities and lower the rates. IDK maybe people don't care or get it

Chris here - Tom Brady's Hertz commercials annoy me so much more. He;s making millions just talking about football on tv and he thinks we want him telling us how to rent cars?? He can get lost.

      @SpitballinCards
Why would that annoy u so much more? Renting a car isn't forced upon u, and Mahomes has way more commercials than Brady. Hertz and renting a car is optional while State Farm is as well bit not insurance. If u go out of town, u can catch a Lyft or Uber. He might be annoying, but he's not making millions and endorsing something we are, again forced to purchase

My problem with Mahomes is I just don't find him interesting. Like the stats are there obviously, but like Brady I just don't care. Long term I think both Brady and Mahomes are kinda boring. And not necessarily embraced by future generations.

I don't understand how their are people in the comment section who says Mahomes isn't likeable🤔🤔.

      Agreed
Unlikeable is an inaccurate adjective. And his family is not in scope.
Maybe “not as well-liked as other stars”. Sure, I guess. For now anyway.

Mahomes will NOT be more valuable because of all the forced narratives, likability matters and right now he’s at 0…
This us the reason every year ppl are buying up Josh Allen and Joe Burrow

    • @staleprad

False narrative..mahomes has way more collectors than those you mentioned ..people are dumping burrow, Herbert , Allen…..mahomes cards are the hottest at any show

      @ Right because he’s the Super Bowl…
The debate was long term and my opinion is he has limited long term prospects because he is unlikable to the general public
