Dreamworks has always been a studio that would make good films, bad films and films that appeal to a certain group of people. Much like the MCU, people keep going back and forth. “The MCU is dead”, “The MCU is back”.

I prefer DreamWorks Animation over the MCU. Especially when talking about nowadays.

Every studio in franchise has its ups and downs. It’s just how it is DreamWorks and I have some good movies and some bad movies or some OK movies it’s just gonna be like that.
Very true, but then there are some companies, like DreamWorks that just always had an overall success rate, and it makes me sad to see when good stuff starts to decline, especially when it’s such an important part of your childhood.

I think you’re forgetting that inconsistency is nothing new to DreamWorks. I mean, have you seen their track record? Both Shrek 2 and Shark Tale in 2004? Ruby Gillman coming out a year after Puss in Boots 2? DreamWorks goes through highs and lows all the time, so their current output is nothing new.

Madagascar shows were actually unironically VERY funny, and very faithful to goofy spirit of Madagascar franchise, and comedy is quite edgy for kids tv show.

You have the classic era which were good movies, the dark age which did have a lot of mediocre films with a few gems, the renaissance with are great films, then the 2000s which were very experimental for Disney.
And the 2010s were pretty good until 2018 and that started what I call the “evil decade” of Disney films.
Even though the company was always shitty, At least that shittiness sliminess didn’t seep into their animated films, though ever since Ralph Breaks the internet, Disney films have been on the decline in terms of quality.
Dreamworks on the other hand… they just do whatever the hell they want, the definition of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks 😂

I have a theory that we boosted their ego, they thought they were so good due to everyone on the internet praising them with PIB2, they got lazy and thought if they made anything they'd be fine. But that's just a dumb guess I have.
People describe companies like Dreamworks as an “experimental” studio. Personally, I think that’s just a fancy way of saying “We don’t know what’s good from what’s terrible.”

More like it was a hilariously badass movie! I loved it so much, and it was better than both the Pixar movie (Cars 3. also good but not as funny) and the Illumination movie (Despicable Me 3. Didn't watch it. Didn't care) that came out the same year. For me, that was practically the best animated movie of the year. It also didn't treat kids like dumbasses. It did a great job covering more mature subject matter such as the never-ending desire to challenge authority, conformity vs individualism, the bargain-basement pay and long work hours for teachers that results in them hating their jobs, and the terrible education system in the US that causes kids to feel bored and disengaged from their studies. The romance subplot between the cafeteria lady and Mr. Krupp was pretty hilarious, too.
Instead of being a lazy Shark Tale-style pop-culture fest like it could've been, the Captain Underpants movie captured the look and feel of the books perfectly, complete with gross-out humor and the Captain's final battle against Professor Poopypants and the Turbo Toilet 2000! There's no attempt to make it look more realistic or resemble Dreamworks' other movies. Instead, it basically adapted the books' art style in vibrant, detailed CGI.
Additionally, I loved the chemistry between Harold, George, and Captain Underpants. The Captain has the mind of a child, so Harold and George have to constantly ensure he doesn't get into the trouble. But, thanks to his superpowers and cheerful, optimistic nature, he's also like a big brother who watches out for the 2 boys throughout the movie. He also saves everyone from Professor Poopy Pants' evil schemes like any good superhero. The use of the page-flipping feature of the Underpants books, especially in the final battle scene, was very clever, too. The Captain UnderPants Movie is a movie that could've only been created by a team of people who were massive fans of the books as kids. If Dreamworks ever wants to make a sequel to that, I'll go see it opening weekend. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've watched it many times. 9/10
To sum it all up, Captain Underpants movie is a textbook example of a book-to-movie adaptation done RIGHT, which is extremely rare.

This is why I wasn't so fast to say DreamWorks was back simply after the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It wasn't four good movies in a row, it was ONE good movie.

You forgot a couple of key important points:
- A Bug’s Life was supposed to come out in early 1999, until Micheal Eisner pushed for a holiday 1998 release window, releasing before Prince of Egypt. Katzenburg was fucking pissed and so he did the same with another animated under his belt, Antz. Micheal Eisner tried to do it again until Pixar (who already didn’t like his previous decision cause the film wasn’t even finished yet) convinced him that they can’t finish A Bug’s Life before Antz comes out. Armageddon and Deep Impact (both live-action films about the end of the world from a meter) also released that same year, but that’s just a coincidence.
- Disney gave up on theatrical 2-D animation in the early 2000s as the financial those were at their lowest point. DreamWorks similarly did the same but unlike Disney they never looked back and gave it a second chance.
- Speaking of Sinbad, prior to that DreamWorks was going toe-to-toe with the (at the time for the longest) big 6 major studios to the point they were the borderline 7th one, that is until Sinbad fumbled the bag so bad it nearly bankrupted not only DreamWorks Animation but also DreamWorks as a whole, period. The Cat in the Hat live-action adaptation that same year also didn’t helped matter, and also Shrek 2 single-handedly saved DreamWorks
- DreamWorks ain’t just hit-or-miss critically either. Monster Vs. Aliens only did well in the US and nowhere else. Megamind was only a disappointment because Despicable Me came months earlier. And then 2012-2014 was the worst consecutive financial flops DreamWorks could ever suffer from, being Rise of the Guardians, Turbo, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and Penguins of Madagascar, those last two were enough to killed off PDI (Pacific Data Images), their CGI studio in their earlier days that they bought and got it to make Antz, Shrek, Madagascar, and Megamind).
- The stuff above pretty much cementing the message “yeah DreamWorks can’t go independent for much longer, so then they were bought by Universal in 2016, who then reduced their budgets since 2020. This seemed like a win-win until Universal did studio meddling for not only Kung Fu Panda 4 but also now rushing The Wild Robot, all in a rush to force DreamWorks to outsource all their future works after those two and also wanting to avoid paying for animation unions (how petty).
And also Jeffery Katzenburg himself ain’t all sunshine and rainbows it, he punished poor workers (who never animated before) by forcing to them the Shrek pile, and also believes A.I. generated movies would make them so affordable for him (which by the time A.I. becomes mainstream, every movie month would be flooded with nearly nothing but A.I. garbage that’s as disposable as a plastic fork.
Woah, that was amazing, you should make video essays. And yeah everything you stated once again kind of furthers some of those beliefs that DreamWorks was really a giant middle finger to Disney as well as Katzenberg having a giant ego. I left a bunch of that out just for time and also that his constant back and forth with Disney was a bit repetitive for a video. There was a version of my script that did have all of the bugs life and antz drama but it slowed down the pacing. I think both studios have their flaws and merits. Disney gets a lot of criticism for their female protagonists in the Disney Princess franchise, but off the top of my head the only DreamWorks films that I can think that actually had female protagonists were "Trolls," "Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken," and "Monsters vs. Aliens." And at least two of those had a lot of negative criticism.

I think weve entered that era in media that we were in the 2000s. With the wider availability of DVD players we had a surge of straight to DVD sequels with bad writing and cheaper animation.
We've entered an era where everything is on streaming. Hence history repeating itself with AI writing and overworked animators.

I feel like the culprit behind the sudden death of Dreamworks is Chris Meledandri (The CEO of Illumination) since he's the reason why recent DreamWorks films have cheaper budgets unlike universal pictures' bigger franchises like the fast and the furious,Jurassic park,and child's play where they mostly have bigger budgets than DreamWorks films

Tragic. I would have expected Dreamworks to have filled the space left by Pixar after the dead hand of Disney removed all the intelligence after its takeover. The determination to make animations just a 'kids thing' appears to have been a poor move. The 'over 3D-ing' of animations also is too much. Cartoons are cartoons, live with it. Don't try to recreate a parody of reality, it doesn't work. Clearly, as with Disney, the desire to wring out all they can from existing franchises is a ploy that the cynical viewing public can see straight through. Kung Fu Panda is one of my wife's favourite movies, but the later ones....'meh'!

Everything is cash-grab nowdays, but calling Mr.Peabody & Sherman like that, disliking Shrek 4 and liking Shrek 3, also disliking turbo. Maaaan, there's really something wrong with your taste. Also, how the hell can Kung Fu Panda 3 be a cash-grab, when Kai is literally painted on the Po's room wall in the first movie? They planned a sequels, but the fourth one look like a cash-grab, with this I can agree.
Also Captain Underpants is one of the only animated movies that has genuine passion put into it.
Kai wasn't planned per se but I agree, kfp3 is not a cash grab, but dreamworks execs did want a cash grab (using the excuse of parents complaints about kfp2 being too dark) and harmed the movie by forcing Yuh Nelson to water down the movie and to basically cut it in half, and we ended up with the pandas acting like walking jokes for a good chunk of the movie, Kai getting watered down and losing moments that fleshed him out, and lost a whole Tigress arc.
And I say this as someone who likes kfp3.

I love Dreamworks more than Disney tbh but my problem with them is that they decide the quality of their movies by the flip of a coin.
One time it's a masterpiece, one time it's bad, and goes on.
And the fact that there are massive layoff and new directors and writters and all don't make it better especially when its their tv branch and Peacock who animated Megamind 2.
What worries me now is that they are the ones that will make The Bad Guys 2 and Shrek 5 and i'm worried about their fate.

I'm going to be honest in that front, peoples REALLY should STOP calling a studio god or golden age everytime they are making a hit movie or calling them bad and screaming about downfall when they make a miss movie, it's seriously annoying and well all know DW is the perfect example of Hit or Miss.
That's not because they made 1 or 2 good movies that the following ones will be absolute masterpieces, and that's not because they made 1 or 2 bad movies that all the following ones will be bad.

DreamWorks is dead. Out of the past few years they've only had one real project that was actually decent while continuously making garbage. And even that one decent project puss in boots 2 still never actually technically made a profit. And the Bad Guys was mid at best and forgettable. Shit like Abominable, the awful Spirit remake in 2021, Teenage Kraken, Trolls 3, The Bad Guys Christmas Special, Megamind 2, the Megamind Rules show, the rest of their awful shows, the rest of their awful shorts, the rest of their awful specials, KFP 4, and etc. were all awful flops.
Their fanbase became so awful since puss n boots 2 happened. All they get is just mediocre films now and then because they’re so biased for how the company has always been. And just for that, I just think that Universal is gonna shut down DreamWorks one day so that they can put them out of their misery.

Shut the heck up about Captain Underpants. It was NOT a soulless cashgrab. It was a great movie with beautiful animation and good writing! I get why some people wouldn't like it (it has underpants in the name), but it is DARN good.
I find this video essay to be very weird. I might even be the weirdest and most questionable one I've seen all year so far.
First of all, you act like DreamWorks hasn't had its ups and downs over its history.
From Sinbad nearly killing the studio, to going from the releasing a great movie like Shrek 2 to Shark tale in the same year, then having Boss Baby and captain underpants release in the same year and basically be a reverse of what happened in 2004 (BTW, I understand that people have opinions, but i dont get why you say that films like Captain underpants and Peabody and Sherman were "soulless cash grabs that treated their audiences like dumbasses," as me and many others will find those to be some of the better DreamWorks films within the past decade due to the amount of care, passion and the respect of each source material put into those films). It looks mid at best. All it even shows was a robot running around the woods with creatures while playing generic old peaceful music.
