Megamind 2 is geniunely one of the worst and most disrespectful movies I have ever seen, it's like Belle's Magical world, but Belle's magical world at least had the OG voice cast, meanwhile this doesn't even have that going for it, the animation looks like it was done in the early 2000's and the little girl is such an annoying self insert

Megamind 2 shouldn’t even be in the same category as all the other Dreamworks films, as it’s just a glorified pilot to a shitty show, not a high-budget proper film
Trollhunters Rise of the Titans (which is also a shitty movie because it ruins the amazing series) is more of a movie than Megamind 2 is, but that isn’t ever bought up in Dreamworks film discussion so Megamind 2 shouldn’t be treated as a proper feature film either.

It’s funny how 2 years ago when The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish many people on the internet were saying DreamWorks was making a comeback after having a string of average animated films like the Trolls films, The Boss Baby films and Spirit: Untamed and using it as an excuse to hate on Disney and Pixar’s then-recent animated films at the time like Turning Red and Strange World. And now, I kid you not, there’s a video released in hindsight of Kung Fu Panda 4’s release discussing how DreamWorks is now “going downhill”. It really sure shows how many narrow-minded people on the internet will just automatically jump to the conclusion that a studio is returning back to its successful heights as in the old years from just 2 frigging films without considering the overall possible critical and financial outcome of the films following after Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The thing is it did seem like the studio was getting better. Genuinely two really good artistic movies in one year showed a good direction for the company though they instantly squandered any gained rep.
Like it isn't weird to expect better from a company because they make two well balanced stylized films in a year, those films take at least a couple of years to be shaped. It shows there was some sort of action going on but of course it just ended up being a lucky fluke.
And no one would expect for it to be even worse (unless you are incredibly cynical all the time) as they fire a large part of their animation team and move onto out sourcing animation more. Thats just gross.

Like, I love How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Shrek has a special place in my heart, but I also like Trolls, The Croods, and most of their 2D stuff. One can like a variety of things for different reasons. HTTYD, RotG, and The Croods are three films I cite as having the most significance to me, where movies like Shrek and Trolls are my go to when I want to relax with a cup of tea/milk at the end of the day.

I don’t think people realize Dreamworks has always been like this. They’ll release ONE amazing film after a string or row of mediocre films. The only time that wasn’t really the case was with How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Megamind in the span of 1-2 years. Now, what I will say is that that ONE film they release can be something incredible and can be on par and can even surpass some of Disney’s best stuff.

I'd question the consistency of good movie-making regarding the HTTYD trilogy. The 3rd movie had a noticeable dip in writing quality to the point the plot moved the characters, not characters moving the plot, committing silly things, and being out of character (like Hiccup giving up on trying to teach people we can coexist with them completely when previous 2 movies proved it can be done). Suddenly, Dreamworks wanted to end things like in the books while the only thing that connected movies with them is the title and characters' names.

It's not that Dreamworks doesn't have great movies (Prince of Egypt, Road to El Dorado, Chicken Run, Curse of the Were Rabbit, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away, How to Train your Dragon, Megamind and the Captain Underpants Movie)- its more that they lack any sort of style with their movies, you cant just look at a film and tell its made by Dreamworks - Disney has an easily recognisable style while Dreamworks films look like they could have come from any studio. It doesn't help that almost all of their films post 2010, excluding the Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon films have been pretty terrible.

As far as 3d animation goes, they're definitely a step up from the "cal arts" style found in many films recently.

The movie wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t good, it was just mid and overall unnecessary. That’s the biggest problem with film companies today. Continuing medium that doesn’t need to be continued and breaking trilogies that should’ve just stayed trilogies in the first place. And Megamind 2 was obviously just a streaming service cashing in on a very popular past medium in hopes to make a quick buck! The absolute shallowness a great company like DreamWorks can have sometimes is heartbreaking. They know they can make masterpieces they just choose to take the safe route sometimes.

Meanwhile, Marvel put out a slate of trash and mid films but were "redeemed" by Gunns final entry with the Guardians. I loved Ruby Gillman, I am completely aware it is a technically lackluster film in a general sense. but given how generally poor received it was, one thing that was overlooked was the scene compositions, they did exceedingly well with the visuals, balancing dynamics and feeling with the different camera angles and such. Scenes meant to convey size really knocked it out of the park, while the atmosphere around each storybeat felt perfectly in place.

The problem is that THAT has already been done too. Theres almost no way to do a superhero-esc/teenage high school monster story without doing something that hasn't already been done to death in a single movie, the only way to do something more unique would be to do it in a series or show rather than a single movie.
Or you know, set the movie where the characters are younger children or older and in college? At an age and in a setting where these kinds of stories haven't been done to death in

Honestly, as much as I really enjoy sequels to some great films. Studios really need to know when to say where the end is. I mean the only real reason to make a continuation, is because there is more to the story to tell. I mean HTTYD is a great example, the first movie is about training a dragon, and making peace with them, the second movie is about someone using them as war machines, and is a continuation of Hiccup's arc, and the third movie is about someone who is essentially the opposite of Hiccup in philosophy, and completes Hiccup's arc and shows the contrast from star to finish for the series.

The big studios, the mainstream reviewers, producers, advertisers are sooo out of touch with the modern audience that they don't know how to tell which movies audiences actually would like to see or how to market them. For both Disney and Dreamworks half of their most popular movie tanked at the box office through mismanagement and poor advertising, making back the failure later through demand for merch and and online views. And the movies that have been well advertised were so terrible they only did well in the first week and immediately crumbled!
