I may not actually like her, But i will admit it's nice to see someone rise to fame from something small they worked on in college. Especially if she's dedicated to this. Her voice is just... too recognizable though. if you hear a character voiced by her you will know it's voiced by her.

Omg! Right! She did the bubbles in IF. I love that movie, even though I disliked it when I was still halfway through watching it the first time. It surprised me with how emotional it became and the twist was enjoyable, so it grew on me when I had to watch it a few times to get my dad to watch it... It's honestly pretty special to me now. And yeah, I never considered Awkwafina to be awful either. It gets a little annoying to hear her voice being the same in so many things sometimes, but I do like many of the characters she plays.

I really like Awkwafina, but she's being used as if her literal presence will make the movie or show better, which isn't the case, but she doesn't inherently make it worse like so many try to make out to be (except Little Mermaid, but no one could have made Scuttle work with how it was written)
They're using her like she's a new James Corden. It's no wonder that's what's making people hate her. She's scripted to play herself and no one likes when that's done

I like this ranking! Is very light hearted compared to other types of analysis of her performance, and you critic her for her falls but praise her when she does a good job. I have never seen someone be so honest and upbeat about her and you make me think diferently from what I previously thought of her. Thanks for the video 💪💪 very good stuff.
I think the main reason why people dislike Awkwafina so much is mainly because she only has one voice (and by that I mean it’s extremely obvious when she was the voice actor) and she has been given some horrible scripts. So when people watch these bad movies, they instantly can tell it’s her voicing the character and thus the bad writing is associated with her acting. If she got some better roles such as Mrs Tarantula while establishing herself in the industry, she could possibly be seen as a decent actor. Also I know some people find her voice annoying, but that’s pretty subjective, tons of actors work through their annoying voice, and her voice wouldn’t be near as annoying if she had decent scripts, so I don’t hold that against her.
personally, i dont blame awkwafina but i dont like the fact that companies keep hiring someone who brings her own personality on the character instead of letting the character's personality drive her
Michaela Dietz and Akwafina do sound super similar. Honestly it’s lame that Michaela barely gets any roles when she could probably do a lot of the roles Akwafina did just as well if not better
She was never considered a "bad voice actor," just overused and no range which is fine when you are being type casted. It might seem rude but her voice is very "unappealing," she sounds like a female version of Steve O, she needs to be in more villain roles, the Dark Crystal and Migration were her best roles cause her voice actually fitted with those character. It's crazy to me that she hasn't voiced some decrepit old smoker yet cause that's what she sounds like.
Shoopy Doopy describing Tuca And Bertie as a "lighthearted show" that's "less serious than Bojack" made me crack up. He only watched 2 episodes of it. Not spoiling anything but Stevie Wonder would've had more accuracy shooting at a target range.

Personally, my main gripe with Akwafina is that she's just not a versatile voice actor. Her voice is very recognizable, but she hardly ever does anything new with it, and she's especially bad whenever she has to do a scene that isn't solely comedic since she can't help but say almost everything in nearly the exact same tone. Also, side note, I hate the BFFs short, but that's just me. Honestly, I'm glad someone can find stuff to like about it lol. You're better than me.
I can understand this perspective and I agree with it. But I also think it’s not always a bad thing. I think she’s just stinking to what she knows and what’s gonna make her money. If I was in her position I’d probably do the same thing lol
If this werent for her animated roles, I would've put her role in Marvel high up. Katy Chen from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was actually a REALLY fun character who was written serious and naturally. I quite liked her, and was surprised to see Awkwafina given a genuinely good character role.
To me, she's in a similar boat with Seth Rogen. I don't hate her. I think she's everywhere and doesn't fit certain characters but when she fits the role, it's great. Like B.O.B. And Miss Tarantula.
@@shoopydoopy You know what's weird. Chris Pratt somehow doesn't fit in this equation the more I think about it. Jack Black is getting there but not yet. I think the reason is. Seth Rogen seems to be casted for roles that fit his voice sometimes. Same with Awkwafina. Chris is just there cause big name most of the time and gives the same voice and performance. Jack is getting there but at least he gives his all.
I actually really envy her for the way she was able to break into hollywood with like zero skillset just did a funny rap got some movies and got on the grind doing animated movies
she's also already in the cast for a movie coming out presumably in 2025, called Wildwood. A Laika film, the studio that made Coraline. My only source for this was seeing her in the cast list when searching the movie on google, so this may be subject to change, but with how consistent she's been in movies these years, I'd say she likely is in it
Disney making Scuttles a northern gannet is an INSANE choice, because gannets are some of the most badass birds out there. They are pursuit divers, but their method of entering water is both highly efficient and EXTREMELY dangerous for themselves. Long story short: plunging head-first into the water at break-neck speeds (literally, there are many cases of this happening) from insane heights. Not to mention they are probably the only bird to have recovered from the more recent and deadly strain of avian flu, and those that survive have black eyes. That and also it’s a case of Disney adding an animal to the cast that doesn’t make much sense*, since afaik, the movie takes place outside of their range * (see: the wolves in the jungle book live action aren’t Indian wolves, the general anatomy of Manchas the jaguar in Zootopia resembles that of a leopard, etc) This is a bit of a tangential rant but i just wanted it off my chest lmao
Ok, to be fair, the wolves in the Jungle Book not resembling actual Indian Wolves is definitely an artistic decision, since actual Indian wolves are, to be frank, kind of mediocre.

i know a show similar to animals, "the midnight gospel" i watched it on netflix and its basically someone who shapeshifts into different animals and interviews other animals like in a podcast
I dont hate awkwafina (my mom loves it when she appears in movies, and i dont judge) but her appearance in Raya and The Last Dragon didnt really stick right with me 😭 as a southeast asian its kinda sad that the biggest, most popular representation of southeast asia is a half assed “authentic” movie about it, Dragons (or “nagas” as we call it) in indonesian culture are highly detailed and more so of gaurdians and awkwafina making Sisu be an adorkable “quirky” dragon felt off to me in a way, this might be just because im an indonesian and RATLD is a mixture of many other cultures (which is VEEERY problematic, our cultures can range a lot and can be confusing)
I first saw Awkwafina in Crazy Rich Asians, and I honestly did enjoy her in both The Dark Crystal series and the Jumanji sequel. Her voice is good in small doses, I think. I kind of see her as the female version of Gilbert Gottfried XD
I mean lots of people really hate her, but I really like Akwafina. Her voice is really unique, and her acting is amazing. But it does get slightly annoying when she appears in literally every single movie known to humankind, but I think her voice is utilised well for the characters she plays.
Personally I think her character in the dark crystal AOR was one of her best, the first few times ive watched the series I couldnt even really tell that it was her until i looked into it more. Her voice really fits skeklach, especially considering skeklach is represented as a male with a more female sounding voice, and its one of the few I actually can tolerate. The higher pitched and scratchy sounding voice she has fits the character and his pustules and wheezy personality. I just think its one of her better ones 😣
Apple is still my favourite role Awkwafina has done. Mostly because I've known it was her, and she wasn't insufferable. I only found out when I checked the Wikipedia and I was shocked when I found out she voiced her. Obviously her best voice performance is Sky in "The Boys: Diabolical", but Apple is still my personal favourite role of hers.

For those who can tolerate (and are genuine fans of) Awkwafina, they have to see her best acting performance in the underrated drama film "The Farewell". People hate on her so hard, but she has a very unique voice that never gets much credit than it deserves. Obviously I understand the complaints of being in too many major animated films and not showing almost no range. She needs more varity and practice, and to take on more drama roles like " The Farewell".

Genuine question because I’m curious. Why do people hate her? Is the only reason why people hate her because she’s “everywhere”? IMO she’s not even bad at voice acting, and it doesn’t seem like she’s done anything terrible, so why do people not like her?
I guess it's a combination of the "everywhere" aspect as well as a lot of people finding her voice annoying (which doesn't help the "she's everywhere" view).
ANIMALS MENTIONED??!!! I really liked that show when I first watched it! I should probably rewatch it because it was super creative and interesting! I particularly like the one about the flies that only live for a day.

Even if I wouldn’t personally give as much praise to her as you do, I think people being more overall positive about films like this is a good thing. There’s so much toxic negativity around everything film related these days ngl. Also I didn’t even know all of these roles and you might have made me turn around on a few roles. Ngl she kinda killed it as Apple. Edit: After watching even further into the video I think you might have genuinely made me rethink how I perceive her within film. I think most of my negative feelings mainly just stem from me not being all too fond of Sisu or Raya as a whole but other than that I’d say I agree with the rest of the ranking
I think Awkwafina just needs to be type casted more often. Like she really does rock certain roles. I feel like any appearance after Reya on this list fit her pretty well. She just needs roles where the rasp of her voice adds to the overall performance.

I do like Awkafina when she's not voice acting; because she is actually trying, it's just that she needs to improve her voice acting so the characters don't sound the same.
Awkwafina is a performer who clearly works for a specific group of people, and I’m happy for them. For me tho, I can’t stand her and I find her unbelievably annoying, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Comedy is subjective, and even tho I hate her comedy and I find her voice annoying, that doesn’t mean other people have to hate her too. At the end of the day, she’s not a problematic person and she’s very good at what she’s going for with her role. So yea, while I’m gonna always roll my eyes whenever I see her in any movie, I’m glad some people out there can rlly enjoy her even if I don’t.
I find it funny how literal shit has a better track record of being able to beat the Seven then the actual Boys themselves. Like, imagine getting upstaged by a teenage girl with the power to control SHIT.
Awkwafina is a great actor who few directors bother to utilize correctly. My all time favorite performance of hers was in quiz lady, where she plays a shy, anxiety driven woman, basically the opposite of her average roll, and she kills it! It’s a fantastic movie that a definitely recommend if you wanna see some Awkwafina range
am i the only one who absolutely loves awkwafina? anytime i hear her voice in a new animated movie i get so excited because i love how she plays her characters. while a lot of ppl are casted for their voice, Awkwa is casted for her personality
I like how this is problem to people when I grew up watching dubbed movies where one actor was voicing 2-5 characters😂per movie. And some where in ”all” movies. There was no variation in voicies
Funny thing is I just watched both the simpsons episodes on this list recently and had NO clue that any of those characters were played by Awkwafina. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Awkwafina as an actor, she just works with the material that is given and sometimes that’s good and other times not so much… my biggest complaint is I feel like the characters she voices are written less as the character and more like “Awkwafina” if that makes sense.. also just discovered your channel and already loving it, your character and voice are very nice!

You're not alone, sometimes a mistake her voicing Amethyst even though I knew who the original VA was way before Awkwafina.

Katy Chen from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was actually a REALLY fun character who was written serious and naturally. I quite liked her, and was surprised to see Awkwafina given a genuinely good character role.

@@shoopydoopy You know what's weird. Chris Pratt somehow doesn't fit in this equation the more I think about it. Jack Black is getting there but not yet. I think the reason is. Seth Rogen seems to be casted for roles that fit his voice sometimes. Same with Awkwafina. Chris is just there cause big name most of the time and gives the same voice and performance. Jack is getting there but at least he gives his all.

My only source for this was seeing her in the cast list when searching the movie on google, so this may be subject to change, but with how consistent she's been in movies these years, I'd say she likely is in it
Disney making Scuttles a northern gannet is an INSANE choice, because gannets are some of the most badass birds out there.
They are pursuit divers, but their method of entering water is both highly efficient and EXTREMELY dangerous for themselves. Long story short: plunging head-first into the water at break-neck speeds (literally, there are many cases of this happening) from insane heights. Not to mention they are probably the only bird to have recovered from the more recent and deadly strain of avian flu, and those that survive have black eyes.
That and also it’s a case of Disney adding an animal to the cast that doesn’t make much sense*, since afaik, the movie takes place outside of their range
* (see: the wolves in the jungle book live action aren’t Indian wolves, the general anatomy of Manchas the jaguar in Zootopia resembles that of a leopard, etc)

I dont hate awkwafina (my mom loves it when she appears in movies, and i dont judge) but her appearance in Raya and The Last Dragon didnt really stick right with me 😭 as a southeast asian its kinda sad that the biggest, most popular representation of southeast asia is a half assed “authentic” movie about it, Dragons (or “nagas” as we call it) in indonesian culture are highly detailed and more so of gaurdians and awkwafina making Sisu be an adorkable “quirky” dragon felt off to me in a way, this might be just because im an indonesian and RATLD is a mixture of many other cultures (which is VEEERY problematic, our cultures can range a lot and can be confusing)

I first saw Awkwafina in Crazy Rich Asians, and I honestly did enjoy her in both The Dark Crystal series and the Jumanji sequel. Her voice is good in small doses, I think. I kind of see her as the female version of Gilbert Gottfried XD
I mean lots of people really hate her, but I really like Akwafina. Her voice is really unique, and her acting is amazing. But it does get slightly annoying when she appears in literally every single movie known to humankind, but I think her voice is utilised well for the characters she plays.

Personally I think her character in the dark crystal AOR was one of her best, the first few times ive watched the series I couldnt even really tell that it was her until i looked into it more. Her voice really fits skeklach, especially considering skeklach is represented as a male with a more female sounding voice, and its one of the few I actually can tolerate. The higher pitched and scratchy sounding voice she has fits the character and his pustules and wheezy personality. I just think its one of her better ones 😣

Apple is still my favourite role Awkwafina has done. Mostly because I've known it was her, and she wasn't insufferable. I only found out when I checked the Wikipedia and I was shocked when I found out she voiced her. Obviously her best voice performance is Sky in "The Boys: Diabolical", but Apple is still my personal favourite role of hers.

For those who can tolerate (and are genuine fans of) Awkwafina, they have to see her best acting performance in the underrated drama film "The Farewell".
People hate on her so hard, but she has a very unique voice that never gets much credit than it deserves. Obviously I understand the complaints of being in too many major animated films and not showing almost no range. She needs more varity and practice, and to take on more drama roles like " The Farewell".

I think Awkwafina just needs to be type casted more often. Like she really does rock certain roles. I feel like any appearance after Reya on this list fit her pretty well. She just needs roles where the rasp of her voice adds to the overall performance.

I do like Awkafina when she's not voice acting; because she is actually trying, it's just that she needs to improve her voice acting so the characters don't sound the same.
Awkwafina is a performer who clearly works for a specific group of people, and I’m happy for them. For me tho, I can’t stand her and I find her unbelievably annoying, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Comedy is subjective, and even tho I hate her comedy and I find her voice annoying, that doesn’t mean other people have to hate her too. At the end of the day, she’s not a problematic person and she’s very good at what she’s going for with her role. So yea, while I’m gonna always roll my eyes whenever I see her in any movie, I’m glad some people out there can rlly enjoy her even if I don’t.

Awkwafina is a great actor who few directors bother to utilize correctly. My all time favorite performance of hers was in quiz lady, where she plays a shy, anxiety driven woman, basically the opposite of her average roll, and she kills it! It’s a fantastic movie that a definitely recommend if you wanna see some Awkwafina range

am i the only one who absolutely loves awkwafina? anytime i hear her voice in a new animated movie i get so excited because i love how she plays her characters. while a lot of ppl are casted for their voice, Awkwa is casted for her personality

Funny thing is I just watched both the simpsons episodes on this list recently and had NO clue that any of those characters were played by Awkwafina. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Awkwafina as an actor, she just works with the material that is given and sometimes that’s good and other times not so much… my biggest complaint is I feel like the characters she voices are written less as the character and more like “Awkwafina” if that makes sense.. also just discovered your channel and already loving it, your character and voice are very nice!
