    Pat Donohue is in the elite circle of acoustic guitar players who are pure musicians with impeccable technique and an intuitive sense of melody and harmony. His brilliant arrangements are true to the original. And his execution is flawless. His instruction videos are simply the best I have ever seen . Pat is a great teacher.
    I'm sure there must be a flaw somewhere.... ;-0

    I saw Pat at a little gig in Elizabethtown Ky in 99-2000. This is one of the tunes he did that evening. He was amazing! I'd never seen acoustic slide guitar first hand until I saw Pat doing "Mud Slide" that night. I still remember his performance after all these years.

    This is a master class in guitar harmonization. It's sad that some are too musically challenged to recognize it. Or maybe they think that criticism of others will make them more important than they really are in this world. Having met and talked to Pat, I consider him not only a great musician, but a true gentleman. I'm sorry that his gift to us lesser guitarists is such an affront to wannabes.

      Maybe consider replacing the idea of "Musically Challenged" with the idea that some people have literally never been exposed to musical concepts like a lot of us. "Musically Challenged" should really be a term restricted to those who have been taught at least some basic music theory and still can not comprehend concepts like intervals and Harmony.
      There are just haters everywhere though, they may just see criticism as sustenance.

    How often do you get to hear a master explain chords and placement like this. God bless you, Mr. Donohue. Beautiful stuff.

    brilliant recording! I am learning a lot from this. I am punching a bit above my weight here, but this is very informative. I love the way he puts a "pianistic"effect to this tune. He also doesnt go overboard with the jazz chords, even embelishing with some country harmonizations. Thank you to the kind soul uploading this for all of us to learn and it's always great to meet a new player you hadnt heard of. truly great stuff, alhough to learn you really have to divide your brain in different sections, I struggly the most with the right hand .Thanks for uploading!

    This is just so good. I think I learned more studying this for the last 4 hours than I have in the last 2 months. I just bought the DVD, its only fair.
    I came here studying Leon Redbone, there's an odd dearth of his stuff on RUclips. Its really interesting to hear the differences in his version and Pat Donohue's. In general Leon has much fewer changes, though they both have lots of harmonic movement.
    I transcribed this (and working on Leon's), if anyone wants me to post, reply here.

    I did take some jazz guitar lessons many years back and I`m glad I did. Knowing the different augmented and diminished patterns and so forth. I have never been a finger pickin` player but that's all right. I can use what I know to perform this tune. By the way, awesome pickin` Pat.

  • @clarkewi
    @clarkewi 6 лет назад

    You nailed it. Your rendition has the bounce of Waller's piano. Which is rare. Too many others "over jazz" it with altered chords etc. that don't work.

    Pat, are those top cracks running down from the bridge in that beautiful Somogyi? I have similar cracks (repaired) in my Collings. Enjoyed staying up playing with you all night at my campground at Winfield about ten years ago. Thanks to you and Stephen Bennet for letting me sit in. And I got a lot out of your workshop, too. Thank.
