How does this video only have 3000 likes and over half a million views? It should have so many more. People get so caught up in consuming the info they forget to give back just a little bit of gratitude.
Out of all the Lighting Hopkins tutorials on RUclips this is one of very few that even comes close to approximating the sound and style of Hopkins. Well done!
I get pulled away from blues here and there. Classical, a little folk, americana, country, shred, you name it. But then videos like this (and a masterful teacher like Ernie!) pull me right back in. I have had some very deep emotions come from the guitar (Pachelbel's Canon in D in a cathedral as the bride walks down the aisle...) but then this....this music comes back to me and hits me fresh and I fall in love with blues all over again. It's amazing. I wish more people (NON-guitarists) wanted to hear it.
@13:16 Learn that and your saved - you won't go straight to hell - you'll be able to talk yourself through the gates - just make sure you got your guitar with you...😂👍🏼👍🏼 I'll remember that saying for as long as I live - brilliant tutorial - Thankyou for sharing your time and showing us how it's done properly. Respect Sir 👍🏼👏🏽🎸
Luvly..luvly...luvly. You sure do play sweet music man. My father, Ernie Hawkins, was sure an inspiration to me...the goodest, kindest man I ever knew...and now you are an inspiration to me on my guitar. I will learn this if it kills me...and it probably will. Thank you Ernie.
Hi Mr.Hawkins! Saw you at the UNICORN Folk Music Series @SUNY Fredonia in the 80s many times! Fredonia is honoring Dick & Carmen Gilman who started the UNICORN, you may have stayed at their house, on April 29th at the Fredonia 1891 Opera House!
Thanks Ernie! I have my treasured Lightning Hopkins DVD you made many moons ago somewhere in my house... but I can't find it!? So glad that I could find you teaching Ol' Lightning here on RUclips because you are *the best* at teaching Lightnin' by a country mile!!
Yeah, learn that and your saved. I love Lightnin. One of the first things I learned back in the 50s along with Jimmie Reed.Love your videos ,you are a great teacher.
+coldplay xyloto Sorry for that I changed the word to saved ....and I won't be goin straight to hell. Thanx for a reply .On a side note I was at a party and this guy hands me an acoustic guitar minus one string. He hands me a new string and while and after I got it tuned I played that C cord on the fifth while playing the shuffle in E. When I stopped people were like don't stop,no play a bit more. I felt like a million bucks, thanx. I'm 70 years old and still learnin everyday.
+coldplay xyloto That's great I am self taught also. In 1963 I started a surf band called the"Panics" I was 17 years old. I learned off records that my dad had like Jimmy Reed ,Son House and others but I lived in Southern California and the Surf craze was blazin so Dick Dale ,the Ventures and so on. It was fun but only lasted a few years ,then I went back to the stuff I started with and my true love. Good luck brother life is a long road.
There are a few blues artists I wish I could have had a chance to talk to and learn from. But my top five are John Lee Hooker, Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins, R.L. Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Blind Willie Johnson. Those five I wish I could have spent even just a day with. Thank you for the lesson.
Absolutely fantastic footage! Music is all about taste, but please, to rate thumbs down you must be some kind of Hun... If everyone gets aware of musical history, they would appreciate this 'old school' music. Thank you very much for sharing this jewel! Peace to you all.
ive been practicing lightnings style for a while now, and the only thing i played was blues, but then i figured that this fingerstyle was easy to adapt to other genre's. lightning opened a door to different styles, i wonder if it would work the other way around.
Stephen Hayes I'd a probably laughed if I had any fuckin idea what u tryin to say unless somebody deleted a comment????????? Makes no fucking sense unless you like to say penis.
Thank you for putting this up. In a world full of ignorance and people jealous of their s ecrets, you have been a refreshing change to me. I grew up in the Delta and knew some of the old players but did not have sense enough, as Eden Brent did, to ask for lessons. We just hung out and I never thoight of trying to play their stuff. My bad. Thank you again.
Ernie, thank you so much for taking the time and making the tremendous effort to creat such an informative and well taught video lesson! Thank you sir !
A great lesson. It’s given some classic Lightning runs which I couldn’t work out simply by listening to his recordings..Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate his technique so clearly.
You can spend your whole life studying Lightnin's style and never get to the bottom of it - but then that's the fun as you're always finding something new!
hey ernie, i realise many months have passed since u uploaded this, but ive only just found it. I love your enthusiasm and great intuition/ and out tuition. thanks
When I first started blues harp Lightnin" was one of the first artists I tried to join in with. Then I would move on to Sonny/Brownie. Great stuff. Now I guess I will have to attempt the guitar version.
Great video as it made me realise that picked up the majority of this song and licks by ear over time and I had a eureka moment (a rarity) when it hit home from your video and it helped make sense of it all and clearer so thank you for that
Your comments take me back to a moment in 1971, playing at the Family Hand restaurant in Houston. Sam just showed up so I asked if I could play bass for him. Naturally, I asked to tune up...he just said 'Nah baby, I'm already in tune' ( he wasn't) So I just adjusted on the fly...it was the same for everyone, I guess.
@ 25:30 Dude! You can sing this stuff every bit as good and every bit authentically-natured as the original. BTW-Love the lesson. It may be a little advanced for a beginner like myself but I plan on getting your disk anyway.
All of Ernie's instructional DVDs are worth their weight in gold.
Ernie’s right - learn this shuffle and those riffs and you’ll go to heaven. Thank you.
You are amazing teacher. So calm and patient. Thank you.

The best lesson I've ever seen. Thanks Ernie, you're opening doors to the blues.

Beautiful lesson! Ernie Hawkins is a master of several styles.

One of the true fathers of rythm and blues
It sounds like his song "That Woman Named Mary". Love it
Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.
Great instructions thanks Ernie will get to work on it.
I saw Ernie in concert a few days ago at a tribute to Rev. Gary Davis in Chapel Hill. He's a real modern master.

Good video
13:20 that is some bad, nasty, slick playing!
Ohhhh those days listening to Ernie at the Portfolio in Pittsburgh. The only thing missing was him being black and blind!
Hard to teach a style as idiosyncratic as Lightnin' Hopkins'. But some great stuff. especially the walkup to "A."
