I think the same thing is happening to me, I recently bought a pvm and I am thinking about modding all my consoles (n64,nes) and getting a eon mk2 (just for component) cheers to mlig!
All you need now is a nice CRT VGA monitor, nothing else makes the OG XBOX, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2 look any better, not to mention for 16 BIT era games with scanlines a really nice one can look even better than a PVM imo, so sharp and bright.

In all seriousness, I would LOVE for any of the tech guests on this episode for do a series of instructional videos. Even just a video on where to get CRT repair training of some sort, soldering, and other sorts would be great.

I'm so glad you gave a quick mention of the Xbox capacitor going bad. It's only recently that this started gaining mainstream attention, and this makes me happy. They have a very short life! Fortunately this capacitor (known as the clock capacitor, which keeps the system's internal time) is very simple to remove and the Xbox can operate without it, depending on your motherboard revision.
Thank you for bringing light to this. The original Xbox community has seen a pretty decent spurt of growth recently, and I definitely want more people to be proactive in taking care of their newly acquired (or old!) Xbox consoles.
Is this just the clock capacitor, or is this actually a BIOS/System capacitor? Because if the latter, that means no settings can be saved after console shutoff. You have to set them every single time.
I have a dead one in it BUT I didnt take the time to remove it because I will also MOD the xbox with my old SSD and only OLD PCs work because windows 10 cant run the software to read the HDD code
Fantastic video as always, but these documentary ones are the best of the best. After years of collecting arcade machines and gaming on CRTs I've completely converted to the "everything is either HDMI modded, an HDMI capable FPGA, or running RGB through the OSSC" camp.
This is the best time ever to play retro games on hi-def TVs. Analogue's FPGAs are incredible, Retro-Access makes very high quality RGB cables for most systems, and the OSSC really is a great device. ODEs are now available for almost every old disc system, so you don't need to care about the laser dying anymore. And entire 'libraries' can be had due to the easy availability of flash devices from Krikzz and TerraOnion.
I just got RetroUSB's AVS system and am absolutely impressed by the console and the controllers. This hobby isn't the cheapest, but is easier now then its ever been in the past.

As a production geek, I gotta say this is really well shot. Perfect execution of the format.
I'll forever rembember when I was 20, picked up a CRT from some trash bin and tried to repair iit... By myself, untrained, uneducated about the dangers... Tearing it down one piece at a time until I reached those huge capacitors and the crt gun... I even remember reaching for it while thinking "ok that's way beyond my reach and I don't want to get shocked. Maybe I should call it a day.... I don't want to play SMB3 that badly".
I've been throught multiple house fires, nearly drowned, etc but somehow this might have been my closest death experience. To this day It still creeps me out to think about it. Because of how trivial and harmless this kind of operation seems to be for the untrained eye.
I remember being a kid and playing in local landfills. We would smash them and pull them apart all the time next to asbestos lol
You guys including every one involved this video are GODS to classic gamers. I've been playing games from my FIRST Sears Atari 2600... and I have owned almost every console in the market.... I love every min of this hobby.... Thanks for these videos, my RGB mod to my NES, or other systems that I have done...and yes, I am OBSESSED with the best picture I can get it...

I find people kinda brainwashed by what they are told, up until about 2012 I knew people who watched even things like blu ray via composite and said it "looked better" just because it was a HDtv, and that was before you even brought in the fact they would own the cheapest nastiest picture quality lcd tv. Even now they don't change default settings so they may own 4k tvs and watch things set at 720p they just assume its 4k. These are the same people who would say compare a high end modern tv via HDMI at 4k to a 30 year + VHS recording via RF and just say the bad picture is down to it being on a CRT and nothing else. When I show people my 2004 CRT tv which has a 576p component input from a pc and put on modern content they all asume its a HDtv and even admit its better quality than their HDtv.
I am a 40-year-old gamer and also a TV and Radio technician. It was my profession that i have learned in school. Most of what i have lerned i just simply forgot but right now i am willing to learn it back for myself and retro community. I am also starting to invest in tools like a soldering station, multimeter etc... because I know that this retro hardware will not last and i am passionate to do whatever i can to preserve it :)

The quality of those is so amazing! You can easily send these to family members who cannot quite grasp what your hobby involves.
I think they may not want to look the whole thing... I also dont watch the gardening videos my wife watches.
Back in the 90's I dropped a huge CRT right on my Genesis. Cracked it from corner to corner.
It still works to this day.

This series is such a impassioned love letter to vintage gaming. Thank you to all involved for sharing that zeal that drives a lot of us and our love for the culture.
Part 1 was the video I reccomend to non-retrogamers who don't understand the scene. Glad to see it continue. Great work here.
This really is a great video that underlines the "importance" of our "weird" obsession with collecting the original physical versions of our favorite games and consoles. It's great to have the input from the big brains behind the scene, too. Voultar saying the silicon should outlast us gave me a great feeling of relief; as that has been something I'm paranoid about.
Obviously there's some known bad revisions of certain chips that are more likely fail if they haven't already. but, it seems like the rule is: if it's lasted this long; it will probably keep doing so if you keep up with maintenance.
I just recapped all of my consoles and everything is looking and sounding great on both the CRT via S-video and the HDTV via composite or component. Marked the date inside the console and i'll be back in twenty years or so!
I play my favorite retro consoles games with RetroArch these days and I'm happy with the experience since I'm not a purist (I still have most of my old consoles somewhere in the basement though, the oldest being my Coleco), but I admire these guys and what they're doing to preserve the hardware and the authentic gaming experience these old games offered back in the days when they were still new.
One of my biggest regret is still getting rid of my good old Sony Trinitron Wega CRT TV when I purchased my new house and moved in. I wish I have kept it.
The amount of quality in your guys' uploads is fucking astounding. This could easily be on television or streaming. Blown away with every new upload you guys do.
Another well done video. I'll also say that the techniques and warnings that I obtained watching Dan's, Voultar's, Jason's, well everybody's videos has helped me successfully mod my consoles without doing any damage or using any hot glue/epoxy at all.
The work that goes into these videos really shows. Thanks for the time and effort spent in making these - also, it was nice to see so many guest appearances.
Final note, I'm happy to have had my PAL SNES and 9000 series PS1 modified in order to play NTSC games. No voltage converters, no disc swaps or extra hardware, just a console that plays all regions in full colour. For that, I'm happy to have had them modded.
i love how this is technically just a cliffs notes version of the RGB master class series yet it's just as informative and elegantly crafted.
This was one of your best videos. I'm someone who enjoys playing on original hardware and hope one day that parts will be made available for all these consoles to be rebuilt just like how you can buy just about every single part in an old Mustang or Camaro.
Excellent that they warn viewers about working on CRTs. The stories associated with them from back in the 90's made certain I never cracked a case (and I'm a gear head and have built a lot of my own gear). The kid who started at a local computer shop and lied about knowing how to work on CRTs and being blown basically across the room and was dead was the show stopper for most people. Now I have to watch the first episode...excellent work here...

The quality and production value of these videos surpasses the tech documentaries I used to watch on the discovery channel when I was a kid. Its amazing to think how a few passionate guys could produce such content that took teams of people back in the days.
I still use composite video to this day, and I love it!
Him talking at the six-minute mark about people taking forever to realize the audio problems in turbo duos were due to caps made me laugh a bit. In vintage audio circles, the first thing everyone parrots at a malfunction is "replace the caps"

Watched part 1 and 2 back to back, great show, great quality and great information.
I have had a love of modding consoles and hardware for a long time, and although well out of that scene for some time I am venturing back in with a new enjoyment of the 8 Bit era as a player.
Raising the bar for quality again with a fantastic followup to the first Analog Frontiers video! Very nice work MLiG. When it comes to classic gaming on youtube, not many channels have the polish and care of this one, besides my other favorite, Digital Foundry. Looking forward to part 3!

Most of these consoles, they were my childhood. The NES came out right around the time I was born, so as a 5 year old... I got my first console.. an NES. From there... oh boy... in my own house I had a master system, NES, Genesis (32X and CD), Super Nintendo, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, PS1 and PS2, N64, Game Gear. A lot were gifts, a lot were hand me downs, some I bought with my own money... but they defined my childhood.
Now 30 years later I find myself loving to solder, having done arcade and pinball repair work, some of my own console repair and mods and just a love for tinkering in general. I agree with sentiment that working on a CRT is dangerous, and I fear the same that we won't have enough people out there to do it. I remember reading for over an hour, watching videos.. on how to discharge a CRT. I was tasked with recapping a Ms. Pac Man arcade monitor. She was dull, faded... not looking good. I ordered the cap kit, followed all the safety precautions, made sure the cabinet was unplugged and with a hand in one of my pockets, I took the other and gently slid that screw driver grounded to the monitor chassis up under that annode cup. Almost crapped myself when I heard that loud crack. Waited 5 more min, then did the discharge process again and removed the board and monitor. An hour later, after having to repair some burned traces from whoever worked on it before me, lots of sweating in the summer heat, and some late night soldering... I was ready to reinstall the monitor and see if it blew up... or played beautifully. To my utter joy, that Ms Pac looked better than it ever had since the shop I worked for had owned it! Some slight adjusting, and she was ready for a good cleaning and reassembly.
To me, I love original hardware. I lost my of my original childhoold hardware, but have bought back a decent bit of it and am actively buying more. The pandemic has inflated seriously what were already pretty high prices, but I pick and choose my battles. Maybe next month I'll spring for a real SNES (even though I already have both the NES and SNES classic editions) but I likely won't ever bother owning an atari Jaguar like I used to play at my grandfathers house. Some stuff is just getting to expensive for me, but other stuff remains reasonable. WIthin the last two years I bought up about 6 sega genesis units, a 32x and a model 2 sega CD all for less than $200 total. Picked up an original play it loud clear DMG gameboy, three game boy advance units, two gameboy advance SP's. I love the stuff. But I'm a fan of all forms. I enjoy real hardware, emulators both hardware and software, classic editions and don't mind the poor visuals as some would call it even on a modern display. While I do like to do the least invasive mods possible, I'm not against mods that are a bit more permanent so long as it doesn't threaten the population of original setups.
This video was just a very well, nicely done, awesome presentation of such an interest part of video game history. Thanks again to all those who contributed!

ah the PVM. If only I had gotten into retro games earlier. My uncle was a video producer so he had an office full of those things. But he retired and got rid of them years and years ago. :(

Very well done documentary. I recently turned on my Neo Geo for the first time since 1999 and checked to see what saves were on the memory card. Well, it's dead and now I have to replace the battery. The retrogaming community is pretty awesome and I appreciate all the knowledge that's being shared.
Loving this documentary series. Especially as a retro collector. I'm not hardcore in either direction though! I have an original Genesis Model 2 with a Sega CD model 2 hooked up to a Samsung CRT, and I also have a Genesis Mini and a Raspberry Pi and computer emulators, and I play them all! It just depends on what experience you're looking for. Sometimes I just have to take it all the way back to the OG experience, other times I want the convenience of just picking up a controller and hitting go. Nobody is wrong for their preference, but we're all right for having fun and preserving these games for years to come.
1 particular subject that wasn't brought up is and that many dont talk about is:prices for the games themselves,speculators of the retro gaming phenomenon.
At the end of the day you can replace a faulty older system,cables and the CRT monitor ,you can replicate that entire set-up.But if you cant buy or find the games themselves what's the use. With each year prices get more and more ludicrous to the point where someone either has to be crazy or have deep pockets to sustain a large gaming library.
Someone who just started collecting literally has no chance to find certain titles.
I suspect there's a growing percentage of analog/original hardware gamers using flash carts etc. for this reason
@@dizzydee4889 Alot of gamers want to use physical games and prefer not using everdrives? It really has become a hugh problem in the retro gaming community that collectors keep buying up multi copies of games causing pricing to spiral out of control.
Reproduction carts are the only hope.
The quality of production and level of information is really top of the line, now. You've created something for posterity.
Your videos are always great guys, but this series in particular is like your portfolio piece. The editing and the content is top notch, and sums up what the channel is all about.

Nice video. I think that was the first time I have ever seen Voultar's face :) While I have been working on consoles for many years (for myself and friends, not on a commercial level) I have taken home a lot from his videos. Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn about good solder methods.

The average gamer age is 35. A lot of us older gamers that grew up with the NES and Atari are getting up there in age in our 40s now, and getting out of the retro console hobby, idk if a lot of the younger people are going to be gung ho about replacing NES capacitors if they didn't grow up with it. This is why you don't see too many Odyssey or Pong clone machines out there anymore, they just went away with time, the NES and TG16 will eventually do the same thing once the young generation takes over. They will be more concerned with fixing up their PS3s and Xbox Ones since they grew up with those. Emulation will take over eventually.
You might be very right with that. I have been thinking exactly the same for years now. We are getting older, not really gaming anymore and more or less waving goodbye to our hobby. That's what it feels like to me at least. Once we are out of the game - who is going to care? Who will carry the torch? A few maybe. But gaming as we knew it (and trying to keep alive) is not going to be mainstream relevant and thus will be over relatively soon.
@Multi Grain Cirnos That's a cute personal anecdote, but I can't honestly say that it's reflective of most people of your age. In my experience, your age group is more interested in the ease and convenience of emulation more than they are with playing on original hardware.

I’ve got some J-Standard training for soldering. And I love my personal HAKKO FX-951 soldering station. I’ve learned a lot about proper solder joints, I think everyone should get training.

Nice video. As an interactive computermuseum we have to repair and futureproof nearly all computers. Repairing CRT's is a lost art in our opinion. Thankfully we have a few friends learning our technical team this specific art and we're planning to also document and teach this for the future, so CRT-repairs can be done. :)

There should be a retro game tinkerer website where people without technical ability or tools can select their state and be presented with a list of freelance experts willing to work on their technology, what their field of expertise is, a general range of pricing, and how to get in contact with them. With enough awareness eventually there would be a girth of local talented folks others could easily reach out to mod or fix their old consoles and CRTs.
At the end of the day the modding community is striving for elegance when adapting retro tech to everyone's lifestyles. Thanks for what you do guys.

This is really well done.
Repairing and servicing older systems is a must. But if you start changing stuff like nodding it to play backups or adding HDMI support you might as well find other ways to play.

While I can get behind the historical preservation side, I am all about upgrades lol. If I am playing an older game, if I can do remasters or even emulations with upscaling and higher detail rendering or textures, I am going for it.
Maybe it's because I was a teenager and became an adult when the 360 and Ps3 was winding down, so even though I grew up playing N64, PS1, SNES and even NES (my first console) primarily being a PC gamer and even when I couldn't go PC always wanted to (it was expensive even for an entry level system in the 90s) it was all about having the best hardware for the best resolutions, framerates etc.
Hell, my favorite thing in the late 90s/00s was playing games like Quake on a newer PC and high refresh CRT because it was cheap to run it that way when a few years before it was $3k. I guess that's still a fun pastime to me - playing Blood and Quake or Doom at 1080p144hz!
Also, great vid! My only point was I never have cared much about original hardware - and if anything prefer upgrades or even emulation depending! :)
23:44 I think the sweet spot is consumer CRT with RGB, that what we here in Europe naturally had or have I should say. It doesn't look professional CRT sharp but still a little bit sharper the S-video.

New tech: brighter colors, widescreen, etc. and unfortunately latency. I miss the days of Metroid when it felt like Samus jumped before I even pressed the button.
Latency is the biggest problem
Xbox Series X is supposedly going to eliminate some latency as part of their new controller design.
The best newer gaming monitors only lag about 3ms and some really good TVs lag around 9ms. 1 frame on a 60fps game is 16ms, so 3ms is honestly almost nothing.
Just do your research at websites like displaylag before buying a new TV or monitor and you should be fine finding a good model.
@Chip Wiseman Regardless, it's still a great development that will shave off latency. And let's be honest. Most people playing modern consoles are playing with wireless controllers.

Great video, I love collecting and using systems, both old and new. If I ever get round to upgrading or doing maintenance on some of my systems, I will definitely be looking for someone else to do a quality professional job on them.

My heart when I saw the NEC FE2111SB model that I also own. Best choice ever. Game pull you more in and do 90% of the things OLEDs do for a fraction of the money. Imo PC Crts are no must have if you play games after 1999 BUT for consoles like og xbox and before it IS A MUST HAVE. Some games like Max Payne 1 and Socom series on PS2 are pitch black and the brain adds resolution and detail into the 480i / 576i picture which is so much superior to all non OLED screens.

In regards to CRTs, the main reason I use them on retro games is for the reduced delay. Sure my PC monitor is pretty great at only 11ms of latency, yet it still can't beat the 0.02ms my BVM has and when you play games that have incredibly strict timings for game mechanics, every millisecond of delay counts. I do really like the sharpness and colour quality some CRTs can output, too. It's one of the drawbacks to LED screens as you can't have both a good picture and a responsive display. It's one or the other.
I will have to do some work on some of my CRTs though. For some the geometry is pretty off whereas for others they struggle to power on efficiently. I've never opened a CRT before though so I'm going to have to do some serious research and collect a fair few service manuals before I even attempt that. I'm even going as far as to buy electrician gloves and proper screwdrivers before I even dare crack one of those open.

U say 1 million sales but old school gaming is priceless ! I find myself after 55 years still playing old skool games .i own Xbox one and Xbox 360 with thousands of games none of which I play at all. I am drawn instantaneously into playing old skool games no matter what !
That rotted Shin Megami Tensei disc makes me incredibly sad, but also very happy that you guys are willing to collect something so niche. Megami Tensei is my absolute favorite series of all time.
[Try4ce] Heh I have to admit the only reason I have it is it was randomly inside my PC Engine box along with a loose copy of Monster Lair. I probably loose cred by admitting I love Persona 3, 4, and 5 (which really aren't SMT) but haven't yet managed to get into any of the other tangents of the series that I've tried... Devil Survivor Overclocked, SMT4... but I'm still interested in trying more of them regardless.
My Life in Gaming I think a good bridging point would definitely be the Digital Devil Saga duology on PS2. It has a much bigger emphasis on its character-driven plot than some of the other Megaten sub series. :)
Either that or Soul Hackers on the 3DS. Both were worked on closely by Katsura Hashino, so the plots have similar vibes to what you’re used to with Neo Persona
40 minutes of epic docs and it made me knew all modder that I only follow their tweet or saw their names written somewhere on Bob RetroRGB video ... RUclips dont deserve this ... You all should have been pitch this to netflix, pretty sure they wont mind amidst this pandemic that made them needs more content
