Great company. These machines are so sophisticated and incredibly effective for maintaining a good rail bed (something many private US railways fail to do). I know "a little bit about them." In 1965, I was transferred from the company's HQ in Vienna (Austria) to Chicago - for one year but never went "back home." Am now long retired - and happily writing Historical Fiction under this pen name.

The machine is supposed to do all the work. That's how it was designed.
Over time, ballast becomes worn and loses its angularity, becoming rounded. This hinders the tessellation of pieces of ballast with one another, and thus reduces its effectiveness. Fine pieces of granite, like sand, are also created by attrition, known simply as "fines". Combined with water in the ballast, these fines stick together, making the ballast like a lump of concrete. This hinders both track drainage and the flexibility of the ballast to constrain the track as it moves under traffic.
Ballast cleaning removes this worn ballast, screens it and replaces the "dirty" worn ballast with fresh ballast. The advantage of ballast cleaning is that it can be done by an on-track machine without removing the rail and sleepers, and it is therefore cheaper than a total excavation. It also helps reduce track fires: a train is a rolling oil sprayer/dispenser.
Listen to Bill, he does know what it is of what he speaks. Milwaukee Road in the 70's on the "hill" between Haugan Mt. and Avery Id. The roadbed under the ties was so hard you could barely use a pick on it. Years and years of engine sand build up.

I saw one of these a few years ago(15) here in Portugal. Use a chain to take the stones .On beginning of work engage the chain underneath the rails and in the end disengage the chain and lift the system.

Ich möchte mich hier bei allen für die Kommentare und Technik - Interessierten bedanken .-mein persönlicher Rekord im Totalaushub beträgt 460m / h (2016)-größte Leistung war knapp 3km am Tag (entspricht in etwa der RM 1500) diese sind... Top- Daten der Maschine auf diesem Video und nicht immer möglich....mein persönlicher Traum ist es einmal eine RM 900 oder die RM 1500 zu fahren. MfG euer Maik

Denn Tag war ich der Räum-ketten - Fahrer ...nach dem Vorschub zu urteilen ca. 220 m / Std .
Der Kollege hat das Sieb noch in Waage gebracht .

Im normalfall wird erst Entholzt. Und da es sich hir anscheinend um einen Neuba handelt. Wird mit der BereimMaschiene ausgebautalso Schotter und PSS dannmit der iner SVV neuer Schotter und PSS eingebaut. Dann fährt der Umbaugzug drüber, baut Gleis und Schwellen aus und neue ein. Dann gestopft und fertig. Das wärs so in ganz groben Zügen erklärt.

auf einer Bustelle die ich letztens betreut habe stand mal ein Haus (50 Jahre her dann Gleis drüber und nun wurd das Gleis erneuert) und es waren noch die Grundrisse zusehen wo der schotter gewechselt wurde und die Ketten die den Schotter unter dem Gleis rausiehen ziehen haben die Wand gleich mit weggerissen...die kleinen Wurzeln machen dem ding überhaupt nichts...^^

@@sastar073 Я не думаю, что у вас есть такое устройство в вашем саду. У меня нет информации о нем, только производитель.
@@SuperRanger119 у нас уже есть уплотнительные кольца с закрытым и лабиринтым замком все шесть типоразмеров.Была пробная установка на машину давление поднялось до 25 кгс/см.кв.вместо 12 кгс/см.кв. )
