This advice works for me in combination with your video about how you never rush the swing. If you take the faulty movements you exaggerate for purposes of illustration and reduce them by about 85%, you get the error that I make, and probably many others. Early extension and release, which tends to close the club face ever so slightly so that even if you make a good strike the ball will go left of the pin. Which of the two ways you show to get forward shaft lean and a downward attack angle, a lot of rotation or a definite shift of the hips toward the target, may depend on the flexibility of an individual player. For me, at my age of 82, it is the linear forward shift, and the timing of it was perfectly demonstrated in the other video, the one, two, three steps. Just put that into practice today and it worked wonders. Wedges with good contact, good spin and straight at the pin, not on the left edge of the green. So again, thank you.
This guy is a genius, one of the few coaches that actually understands how amateurs feel and can give them a way to address it, the visual above the player was very informative
Hey Russel. I always score in the 100-110 area. But after 2 weeks of practicing with your tips my score drastically went to the break 90 area. Thank you so much for yout tips. I always share your chanel to my golfing buddies so they can improve as well
This guy’s videos are the only ones that have actually made me feel the weight shift and feeling finishing on the left side. I’ve tried every single other video and could never understand it but the two things from these videos that helped the most was the left shoulder working down to start the downswing and low point feeling like it’s at my front foot.
Daniel Quinlivan Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!! I have never heard any golf instructor any where make this suggestion to start the downswing. This makes total sense! The light bulb just went on for me. This is my AH HA moment. GREAT JOB!! Thanks
This video was it for me. The above head view was the best thing for my swing and in turn made me realize how much I was casting. I took this to the range this morning and I moved a club up in distance with significantly less effort as a result of this video, and obtaining a descending blow of the golf ball. Thank you, Russell!
Excellent. The camera view from above your head is brilliant! It's an angle that best demonstrates why, 1. The "bump-squat" move to reestablish center, and 2. How the arms-hands-club "assembly" wrap around a rotating torso into a full finish. You can't allow your arms to muscle the impact. Relaxation of that "assembly" is essential. Russell, I'm, now, finishing with my full weight over my left heel, for the very first time. Thank you! I think youtube is advancing golf instruction by leaps and bounds because it's encouraging instructors to come up with more imaginative ways to demonstrate how to execute three dimensional, complex body movements happening in fractions of a second. Old School teaching pros just tried to "talk" their students through a lesson. You can't teach golf, verbally, then, grab your students club and demonstrate YOUR technique. It does not work! It never has!
I've been 'casting' for over 40 years. Minimal lag. Have had numerous attempts to fix over the years. Am pretty sure I fall into your second category. "Intent" I like it. December 6. MIchigan. April would be better. I guess I need to make some room in the garage.
I really like the top view that shows club head angle and hand position through impact. I come over the top too much, because my right hand wants to be the instigator of the downswing. I’ll give this a go today. Thanks
Russell- THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I recently decided to start playing golf again after taking a few years off... I didn't start playing golf until I was in my late 30s and am self-taught. My biggest problem has always been not knowing (or feeling) what I was doing right when I struck the ball solidly and what I was doing wrong when the wheels came off. As you can imagine, this led to bouts of frustration and dissecting my swing, trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Since I started playing/practising again, my results have been inconsistent. Like so many others, my mind can get clouded with a ton of swing thoughts, i.e. maintain your posture, turn your shoulders, shift your weight to start the downswing, get your left hip out of the way, keep your right shoulder back, etc., etc., etc. This one drill (which can also be a swing thought) is hands-down the best drill I have ever come across because you don't have to think about anything else. Since implementing this drill over the past few days, I have never hit the ball so flush and solid in my life! I do have one short question and am hoping you can take a second to answer- The only club that I am hitting somewhat inconsistently since incorporating this drill is my driver. Should I try to think of "brushing the bottom of my driver" on the 2nd line? Should I also think about keeping my head back/behind impact? My bad miss with my driver is usually a left and low hook, which I have always perceived to be the result of my lower body stopping and my upper body taking over... Thanks again for sharing your golf wisdom with us! Best wishes for good health to you and your family during this pandemic.
It’s hard to say for sure without seeing the swings however I would suggest hitting more down on the ball would help the club face become squared through the impact
Been struggling with clean pure contact on and off since I started playing golf. Tried the 2 line drill and the feedback (how the swing should feel) had an immediate effect. I was almost shocked how clean and pure i started to hit the balls after the drill and how my swing thought of where to strike the ball when i was at address was not correct, I also gained distance. Lots of work to do in many other areas but this drill has really helped impact. What i also found was using this 'feel' as a foundation i am able to start to incorporate other swing changes (hips rotation, club shallowing etc.). Thanks Russell, great channel and superb teaching methods!
Thank you Russell. I can't wait to try this drill this weekend. I've had a 2-3 year layoff from golf and have found that as I'm reintroducing myself to the game I'm having a difficult time with my sequencing as you explain in the video. I seem to have lost two irons of distance and hope this drill will help me regain the yardage and improve my game. Thanks again. Todd
Wow! The best explained downsing ive seen. I can see myself in your first explaination and why i am often hitting the ground too early. Im pushing my hip forward (beginner golfer). It looked exactly like you showed it. Definitely gonna try that drill in my garden :) thank you!!
I've been playing and receiving golf instruction for nearly 50 years and this in the clearest explanation of this vital concept that I've ever heard! Fantastic video. Thanks!
This video is gold. Thank you. The thing about spinning out is that the golfer still feels he is starting with the lower body as he should. This demonstrates the difference as well as anything I've seen on youtube. You'd be my first choice of instructor. Props man!
Very nice drill to help me with something I struggle with. Went to the range this evening, and after a few mishits this drill had me hitting them flush. It really worked! Now I have to prove I can do it on the course with the ball in the normal position.
Excellent video. Thank you. Unlearning faulty motor movement patterns is, as you are well aware, a challenging task especially if the patterns are entrenched. In this regard there appears much a do on RUclips golf at present regarding the new 'Erikson Bell' training aid which, its advocates claim, encourages not only planar swinging motion but also the 'shift -turn' (or shorn as they call it) rhythm inherent to good swinging. As you are a strong advocate of the 'shift -turn' sequence both on back and forward swings, I wondered what your thoughts on this device are?
Very well explained Russell.........I've been playing for years but have been struggling lately due to bad ball striking......utilizing your drill has helped be make solid contact easily! TY
Gold dust. Now I know why I always looked like I was 'scooping' the ball at impact. Thank you Russell. My 'chicken wings' are dead!! One of the best tutorials on the internet.
The overhead shot synched with the front on view brilliantly demonstrates the two amateur mistakes of early extension and spinning out with the right hip. For the first time I now understand these two mistakes.....I am sure i randomly early extend in one swing and spin out on the next. no wonder I can never find consistency. Cant wait to video my own swing to see if this is the case. Got to figure out how to do an overhead video....You really can see what the hips are doing so much better from this view. This video is so jam packed with nicely presented swing analysis I watched it four times and got something different out of them each time. Many many thanks.
OMG 3:21 is EXACTLY my problem. I thought I was early extending because I didn't add enough lag but the reality is that I couldn't rotate my shoulders in a properly manner due to the left pelvis not reaching for the right one giving me space. Now I can rotate freely in order to maintain that lag longer. Thanks for opening my eyes on the root of the problem!!! YASSSS
Thank you Russell for this tip. I hit fat but mostly thin shots. I do not rotate into a good finish. Too much slide. My left leg never really posts up correctly. It stays bent when I slide forward. I will try this and focus on this idea.
Absolutely bang on advice Russell. Bang on. I'm off 5 but still inconsistent in ball striking. My key swing thought (which I'm prone to forget when get head full of other stuff..) is 'hit down on the ball'. I find if I focus on that my path improves, the strike improves and I can consciously feel shaft lean rather than a flip at it. I think that is what the 2 lines drill you show on this vid demonstrates. Comments & many tks for these vids man. Best, Russell, Gt.Yarmouth :-)
After I can hit the forward line consistently and want to hit a ball do I aim to hit the ball or a spot about a club heads width forward of the ball? Thanks for your video instruction.
Wonderful video Russell! Helps me a lot on the downswing and how to start. Question I have is where is the ball placed? Is it on the 2nd line or in between the 2 lines? Thank you
Hello Russell I am a flippy poor contact with irons golfer for a LONG time. Everyone knows my impact position is off. It happens so fast no one can fix it. We discuss it a lot. Sheer determination and good short game I can compete at 62 with younger fellas. My distance can vary 20 yds any iron if I get lucky and pure one. Your point about the position of the left shoulder in line with left ankle and hands at impact and the hit ahead drill to feel it......BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! Fixed my swing. Distance and power. Consistent. I have watched this one video 10 times. You absolutely cannot think about it in the swing but you better know what impact should look and feel like to get in the proper position. I never had done so until today. A mirror is also helpful. Thanks for painting a great picture. Again brilliant. Did I say brilliant? Cheers! Many thanks from Texas Richard
My friends & I use the slo-mo video function on our phones out on the course. I can't recommend this enough - it's helped immensely to be able to look at past videos of my good swings vs bad swings.
I would like to ask a follow up question here. So I have a decent transition on the downswing. I am obtaining an open area for my arms to swing through and am getting okay compression. My question though is I start with my hand almost in like with the shaft. In other words I’m close to one plane swing and the only way with compression and proper positioning on my downswing that I can hit the ball instead of blading it is to have a decent size dip of my head. How are people able to get great compression and not have that dip in their head?
Great drill Russell-one if the best to start the downswing with the lower body and not to slide forward and over rotate. Love your tips. Stay safe and healthy.
I find it useful to simply straighten my left leg as the beginning of the downswing. That works for me with the benefit that it's just one thought rather than thinking about sequence.
I really appreciate that your lessons are derived from understanding that people have differences in how they arrive at a result. Reminds me of the fun and value of trying to emulate different pro swing types. Movements that are extreme or opposing convenional but still trying to make a good strike.
Great vid Russell, good visual. Ball striking has improved remarkably after coming across one of your previous instructions, for the downswing, sitting on a barstool analogy. Light bulb moment. cheers.
Great video indeed. It seems that I have an issue of spinning out (which I did not know even existed) and resulting poor impact is then followed by chicken wing to compensate. Will try 2 lines and hope it does the magic :),
That’s excellent. I want to try this at the range. I like the idea of intent rather than positions. Much easier to do. Because l’ll be hitting off grass, I can just draw a couple of lines with an alignment rod and aim for that.
When I first tried this drill with a ball, my instincts were telling me I couldn't hit the second stripe because the ball was in the way. Like the ball was a brick wall or something. The painted stripe makes a very vivid image and helped me to get over that feeling. After a few swings I got over that feeling, and it does feel like I am hitting through the ball instead of stopping at the ball. So far I've used it to hit foam balls in my backyard, and once at the driving range and the results were pretty good. Looking forward to see how well it holds up on the golf course.
This is excellent, thanks so much. Can’t wait to get going on this two lines drill. Makes more sense than all of these highly technical videos that get me swinging with 10 thoughts simultaneously.
I have a stone patio in my back garden! Seriously, I will give this a try in the nets at my club. I wonder, rather than painting two white lines could this drill work by placing the ball to be hit further forward?
One other thing ... any suggestion how the intention could be changed to suit driver as I suspect "hit the second line" is only suitable for shots of the ground or a very low tee? Maybe "miss the second tee"? (Thinking of the drill were you put a tee ahead of the ball to encourage a positive angle of attack.)
I've been aligning my tush line but have been looking for an upper body move. Would separating my left shoulder from my chin be a good idea? Looks something like what you are doing here. Thanks for the tips.
Great drill - the aiming point described is perfect for a mid iron but should move backward or forward depending on the length of shaft (and person swinging it) - longer shaft back - shorter shaft forward
Great video as always. Are you also saying that when I turn my left hip, it should not go up (tilt higher) but it should stay at the same level ? Is there a moment when the left hip goes up during the turn? Thanks
Great video and super useful, but at around 2:55, is that a range picking robot in the background?!? I have never seen one of those in my golfing life.
Dennis, I think Russell has done a couple of videos specifically on the driver as the set up is different. This drill will still have benefits to your overall swing, but search you tube for his driver vids👍
Hi Russell, just a quick question for you. At the start of the downswing, is the feeling that the arms and club are moving together as one corporate unit down in front of the body, with the right elbow feeling as though it's leading the rest of the arm? Love your vids btw, great content.
This is hard to answer because you can still process a conscious thought at this time so your essentially aware of whatever you want to think about. The idea would be to think about the problem you have?! I hope this helps
Nailed it on the head, I’ve just started playing and the swing is so hard to get your head around, I was starting my downswing by bringing my rear hip forward, but in reality I should be pulling my front hip back. Going straight to the range tomorrow to try this!!
I've found a way to get this kind of impact consistently, with a very simple lower body downswing sequence. This move allows me to keep the arms very relaxed through impact and hit a lot of solid shots. All I use as a downswing trigger is a small turn of the bottom of the pelvis target ward, followed by a feel of lightly pressuring the back of the left heel, into the turf like it had a knife attached to it. The old "squash a can with the heel," thought never worked for me but this does.
Dave, thank you for your tip, but could you please explain what you mean by "a small turn of the bottom of the pelvis target ward"? I'm not sure what you mean by this.
@@stephenrose4582 .....At the time that I made this move, I was thinking about the bottom of my front zipper turning towards the target. A few months ago I starting using another downswing trigger that has helped my ball first contact a lot more. The instructor in this link describes it better than I could...ruclips.net/video/RDgCgQfcdYc/видео.html
@@davee3951 Thank you for your reply. I like your original thought of turning the bottom of the front zipper. To be honest, I have two concerns about the advice in the link: (1) looks good for driver, but it seems like it would be difficult to cover the ball to compress iron shots, and more importantly (2) such a curvature of the spine while twisting at high speed looks like it would eventually lead to back injuries. I believe that is why the reverse ‘C’ has become out of favor.
@@stephenrose4582 Good comments on the link. I think that the demonstration is a bit exaggerated. I don't have enough swing speed to get into that much of a reverse 'C' and tend to finish upright and balanced over the lead food. This move works very well for me with ground shots. I agree that it's a counter-intuitive move but for some reason it works for me, and no problems with back pain.
I read a great tip years ago that changed my game in this regard--it was "swing the handle of the club at the ball." It mentally takes the clubbed out of your thought process and automatically gets your hands and club into the correct impact position. Don't know if it will help, but try it. Really worked for me with my irons, in particular.
Thanks for a great video. I can hit the second line really well, I can actually hit balls successfully this way too. Problem is when I go back and try to hit the first ball that I’m set up to I hit maybe 8 out of 10 fat or thin. With the drill when I’m set up for the first ball and hit the second I can hit 9 out 10 right out the middle. I’ve been doing it for two weeks now and not sure if that’s not long enough or if there’s something else I could try. Any help would be great. Thank you.
One of the best videos about golf I have seen so far. I watched it, went to the driving range and saw I learnt something.

I completely agree. Even although i understand a lot of technical information I appreciate something simple from time to time.

My friends & I use the slo-mo video function on our phones out on the course. I can't recommend this enough - it's helped immensely to be able to look at past videos of my good swings vs bad swings.
By far your best drill for me I struggle massively with hip rotation and the camera view from the top was a massive plus to emphasise the point
Yeah it’s simple and effective
This was super helpful, many thanks !
Hi Russell, I put the ball in the middle for iron shots. Are you saying I should take the ball more forward to the leading foot?

This is great info. Thank you Russ..
Very good coach just been bared at driving range for painting mat ha ha cheers nice one 👍

NIce work. New food for thought. I like the goal of becoming more automatic.
Yeah that’s the idea
What a drill...and excellent explanation.....will be trying this ... thank you .
perfect break down and great video!

Great video indeed. It seems that I have an issue of spinning out (which I did not know even existed) and resulting poor impact is then followed by chicken wing to compensate. Will try 2 lines and hope it does the magic :),
russell, this really clears up a lot of things, the real cause and effect of alot of problems. the overhead eye in the sky shot is very cool. thnx
Probably the most practical vid I have seen from Russell. Easier to implement. Thanks.
Awesome and thanks for sharing
This is excellent, thanks so much. Can’t wait to get going on this two lines drill. Makes more sense than all of these highly technical videos that get me swinging with 10 thoughts simultaneously.
Well articulated
Thank you
fantastic explanation
Great video Russell - cheers mate
Cheers Bro 😎
I try not to think about using my arms at all I just concentrate on moving my hips let the arms follow and it works out pretty well
That’s a very smart thing to do 👍
That gets me disconnected. Club gets behind me and I have to flip at impact.
Great vid Russ
Brilliant, love it
Great video, it just makes common sense.👍👍
Amazing video, please don’t stop👍🏻.
Russell, thank you this is helpful! Does the same drill apply for driver?
This is such an excellent, concise video.
I get hitting the second line with irons. How about with a teed driver. What do you focus on after ball there?
I can be the same only with a different posture to create a rising hit
Great thrill, thank you Sir
I have a stone patio in my back garden!
Seriously, I will give this a try in the nets at my club. I wonder, rather than painting two white lines could this drill work by placing the ball to be hit further forward?
For sure 👍🏻
Yet again Russell a very simple drill but really effective - practice makes permanent!!
Not necessarily but I’ll be doing drills really soon in the channel for driver
@@russellheritagegolf Really looking forward to that. One clear intention to start the down swing with the driver would be amazing!!
love the overhead view and then follow up practical drill. 100k subs not far away with this excellent content👍
Thank you
What are your thoughts on the Right Sided swing that Gary Edwin teaches?
I’m not familiar but will look into it if you feel it’s worth it
@@russellheritagegolf It seems to make some sense for amatureslooking to improve thier game. also, that is the swing Rod Pampling uses.
I've been aligning my tush line but have been looking for an upper body move. Would separating my left shoulder from my chin be a good idea? Looks something like what you are doing here. Thanks for the tips.
Yeah it’s worth a try for sure
Excellent video, had never heard about spinning out and have realized that's exactly my issue. Thanks for the tips
Just superb as always!
Thanks
Finally the information I need, I want to go practise this right now!
Great video and super useful, but at around 2:55, is that a range picking robot in the background?!? I have never seen one of those in my golfing life.
That’s the robo picking the balls up
Great drill. Most of your videos are with irons. Since we hit down with irons, what would change when using the driver?
Dennis, I think Russell has done a couple of videos specifically on the driver as the set up is different. This drill will still have benefits to your overall swing, but search you tube for his driver vids👍
Vince Redmond Thanks
I would just move the ball forward and keep the same intent and see how it goes

Hi Russell, just a quick question for you. At the start of the downswing, is the feeling that the arms and club are moving together as one corporate unit down in front of the body, with the right elbow feeling as though it's leading the rest of the arm?
Love your vids btw, great content.
This is hard to answer because you can still process a conscious thought at this time so your essentially aware of whatever you want to think about. The idea would be to think about the problem you have?! I hope this helps
I've yet to practice the drill, but already I feel that absorbing this video is going to be important.
Nailed it on the head, I’ve just started playing and the swing is so hard to get your head around, I was starting my downswing by bringing my rear hip forward, but in reality I should be pulling my front hip back. Going straight to the range tomorrow to try this!!
Good video...would moving the ball a couple of inches forward of the normal position accomplish the same thing when practicing? Thanks
Sure
I've found a way to get this kind of impact consistently, with a very simple lower body downswing sequence. This move allows me to keep the arms very relaxed through impact and hit a lot of solid shots. All I use as a downswing trigger is a small turn of the bottom of the pelvis target ward, followed by a feel of lightly pressuring the back of the left heel, into the turf like it had a knife attached to it. The old "squash a can with the heel," thought never worked for me but this does.
Great feel.
That’s pretty much me in a nutshell, struggling to get my hands forward of the club, turning a 7 iron in to a 9 iron and scooping. Great video.
Thank you.
Maybe keep the ball position further forward?
@@russellheritagegolf ok will do. Appreciate you replying.
Amazing bro I’m a profesional struggling with this. Will try it out.
Great as always Russel
So is the first line on the ball line and the second, the ideal low point?
Perfect
Superb information 👍⛳
Did anyone else catch the robotic ball picker in the background? That is so cool! Had never seen that before.
that's my Roomba! it got away from us
👀
Brilliant video.
Great drill off to the practice area tomorrow 🏌🏻♂️
