Tremendous amount of information in this video. I’m at a point where I can absorb it. If I had seen this 20 years ago, I’d have been mentally paralyzed. Now I can take this to the range and hopefully begin to put all the pieces together.
Can't thank you enough for this Russell. I've heard about width over and over again and always tried to achieve what I thought it was. The laser visualization, however is truly the ah ha realization for me to get my hands away from the body and leading through the zone allowing me the room i needed to rotate. I can't believe the instant change in my sing and ball striking. Easily the most important swing feel I have ever experienced. I'm spreading the word to all my golf buddies and we will all be going low in 2022!
This is the best golf video I’ve seen. And I watch a lot of these things. The concept of holding the line with the laser pointer has helped me more in my game than anything I’ve seen. Thank you very much
Best video I've ever seen on this. Thanks Russell! I came to this video looking for a cure to the shanks. I was shanking the ball with the right forearm to the sky position on the downswing that you demonstrate. I'm definitely a person that would have the laser pen light outside of the line. Basically what you show in 21:30 to 21:40 with your wrists, fixes that for me. I needed the ulnar deviation motion, not just the left wrist bowing. Best ball striking with accuracy, ever since, shanks gone!!! Can't thank you enough!
I read some of the comments below but none captured exactly what I wanted to say. I have read books, watched videos and read magazine articles and they all talk about the plane. I have also toyed with using the shaft of the club as a reference but both concepts never came together until now. I love to get technical as long as the technical aspects can be brought down to a practical level. Russell you have finally given me a way to keep the club on plane while maintaining width through impact. Now it is time to try and master what you have given me. I will keep you updated as I proceed through this journey.
This is Gold, As I look at your hands at impact I can clearly see they are moving on impact slightly to the left, this is what I have been getting wrong for years, I have been throwing my hands out at the ball or hands straight to target, I have just used this for the last 2 hours It has worked a treat, also getting a totally clean sound off the face of the club, never really had that continually on every hit till now. Thanks Russell.
Great reminder! My swing has struggled over the past month and after watching this and executing on the range I was hitting cleaner crisper shots!! If I hit a bad shot I instantly knew where I had failed. The key thing for me was the width in the swing I had stopped doing. Need that as much as proper hand position.
I've spent years trying to get my swing as good as I can get it. I early extend, get my right arm behind me and flip at it. Ive tried things such as lowering my body closer to the ball, maintaining wrist angles, turning my body more, etc, but it never worked out and I gave up on changing several times. Although I'm practicing things that are technically correct, my body angles just weren't allowing these motions to happen and was basically forcing my body to do motions that weren't natural, like driving a car and immediately making a sharp turn without slowing down. You're the first person I've seen that has explained why these motions aren't working and how to naturally get into these positions without forcing it. Every video of yours I watch is eye opening, and I've seen my fair share of instructional videos. You make the thought of golf more fun again instead of frustrating and anxious, so thank you.
There used to be a 5-iron for sale as a training aid that had a laser pointing out of each end of the shaft - brilliant. The ideal swing had one or other laser pointing along the target line throughout the swing. Some people say there are no straight lines in golf - but there are, as you demonstrate.
I had this in my swing so many years ago yet never understood it. I developed it on my own out of desperation to hit the ball straight. Now you have explained it to me and I can't wait to get back to the practice tee and put it back in place. Thanks again.
Well done Russell - assuming this is primarily for irons. Can you comment on difference with the driver where shaft lean and hand position relative to club head are different at impact ? Thanks, Joe
The emphasis on “hands” in the title made question if I wanted to view this, but the 23 minute length indicated to me that there must be more. I don’t know if Russell is a genius at teaching or whether he’s facilitated my bringing together a lot of disparate knowledge about the swing into a more cohesive understanding. I am a golfer who has always tended to be “all arms” and would forget sometimes to turn my torso resulting in lack of power and distance and erratic accuracy. I had a laser years ago marketed by David Leadbetter but despite following the instructions, I couldn’t grasp the concept. This video has really helped me. Russell talks about hands being here or there. Unfortunately for me that creates an image of active hands DOING something in the downswing. It has finally dawned on me that the arms and hands are quiet in the downswing until the club head approaches the ball. It’s the torso rotation that brings the arms along for the ride through most of the swing. It’s the rotation stupid (me not you)!
Check out AMG video on arms and hands too Robert. Not wanting to confuse you but they demonstrate the active use of the arms and hands throughout the swing. Letting the arms come along for the ride can mean getting stuck which this video also demonstrates. Hands, arms and body must all work together to really deliver the best delivery at impact. As Richard mentions, your wrist position at the top is not crucial but the body, arms and hands must all work together to bring the club back in front of you before last parallel to deliver the club squarely and powerfully at impact with your wrists (and hands) leading the club at impact. When it works, it feels great, doing it consistently is the really hard part! If only I had the time (and ability!!)
......oh man, this is gonna be a good one...................aaaannd it was......my head just exploded in a good way.......great stuff Russell.......oh and thanks for making me spend 12 bucks on a large bucket in 40 degree cold damp weather.
Loved this video Russ. I have always been a right hand oriented golfer where my right wrist was in control at impact. Used a laser pen and saw that it pointed too far away from the ball at the impact position. When I focused on moving my left wrist as you demonstrated in this video (at club shaft back to // in downswing) not only was I on plane but also had the laser pen pointing right over the ball at impact. Wow - this was a eye opener. Will take it to the range tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@garystromberg8856 Gary, it went OK but after watching Russ' Right Hand Move video (March 9th) I learnt to use to my right hand the right way. Have not tried the laser drill since correcting my right hand move but I am sure it is a lot closer along my target line than before. Hope that helps.
Thank you Russell. The very best detailed explanation and demonstration of the down swing. I love your content. I felt like I should be paying for this information.
Thanks for explaining this. I have a laser that attaches to the grip end, and I never realized that shallow was ok as long as it moved parallel at the start of the downswing. I will have to revisit that exercise now that I understand this. Thanks.
This is fantastic content, one of the best vids I've seen on fixing the scoopy hand action. My question to go along with this is, that most of the people I see that scoop also tend to have their hips square to the ball at impact, what are the reasons for this lack of rotation in the lower body? Cheers!
This is probably the best golf video I've ever seen! I'm going to go buy a laser poitner today! I coach varsity golf and this will not only help my athletes but me as well!
This is very helpful. I intentionally try to avoid rotating my wrists, which means the back of my lead wrist orientation remains square to the target. I realized as I start the down swing with a slight lead hip bump which causes me to drop the club on plane, it causes the lead wrist to have a slight open orientation to the target line. If I don’t slightly rotate the wrists through impact it will leave the face open to the target line. I think this explains my propensity to have pushes and or slight slice to my drives. Of course if I inadvertently rotate my wrist on the back swing the result is a wicked slice. Thanks for this video.
Thanks for this very explanatory video. It is the first time in many years of struggle that someone explained the plane to me in an understandable and concrete way. I have a question though. You talk about that it's not so important that the shaft at the top of the backswing or in the beginning of the downswing points outside the target line. Earlier you mention that the objective is to get the shaft to point at the target line throughout the swing. It seems to me that it would be much easier strive for the latter, or?
Good vid. I really identified with the pump drill to get hands leading the club head and keeping the hands in front of the body instead of to the side of the body.

I think this was generally great. For me though as a VERY right handed person (I bet there are more of us), the last part with the left hand control will just never work. I essentially hit the ball with my right hand and the left is just trying to get along with some minor guiding role (I hit almost as long and straight when I only use the right hand). Therefore , for me, the movement needs to be explained in terms of what the right hand should do.
True game changer for me. I was under the plane but across the line from an overly inside path with arms too close to body. Results were a pull or flippy hook. Played today and it needs reps but Big difference

It's the very last hand move that's been killing me forever. I've always known instinctively that I'm doing something funky with my hands at impact, but countless pros have not been able to see it or diagnose it if you will
Russ, looking at this example video... I believe he has focused and released the club at the ball, and I believe with your teachings the club release has to be after the ball around 4:00 if the ball is sitting at 6:00 for example. This would keep his arms from extending too soon. Thoughts?
Love the video Russ and you really helped articulate what I asked you a few videos back (I'm sure you made this video specifically for me 😁). I was always under the impression we locked our wrists in place at the top of the back swing and held them all the way thru impact using our body\shoulder rotation so knowing I need to feel that bit of release\uncocking after the club is parallel to target is helpful. Looking forward to practicing on the range this week. Torrey Pines South Course on Saturday...gonna be going low!
Russ - just took this to the range and the results were so awesome. Started with half swings to get good contact and the ball was screaming off the face and going dead straight. The hardest part for me was realizing how far I had to feel my hands passing the ball while keeping the club head behind me and not letting my hands flick it around (if that makes sense). So excited to keep working on this feeling of club parallel to target line and moving hands ahead of the ball. Thanks again!
Russell, near the end when you were speaking about approaching Impact, you said "Rotation" along with Ulnar Deviation in the Left Wrist/Hand. Are you Externally Rotating the Left Arm *at the Shoulder,* or are you Suppinating the Wrist/Hand *in the Left Forearm?* Or Both?
Hi Russell.Really good detailed video! Ive started hitting shanks lately, 90% of my range balls. From what I can see if I had a laser it would shine between my toes and ball which looks like the club travels above the plane line and very steep. Last parallel it almost looks like the club head is in-front of my hands which then results in an out to in path. It looks like Im squaring off the face, but the hosel is hitting the ball. Any tips on getting the plan more neutral or under? Rgrds
Anyway you can wear a jacket with different color sleeves than body of jacket? It’s a little hard to see elbow on camera as elbow and body blend together with black. Thanks for video, helpful information.
An oldie and a goodie, but backswing, downswing and follow through ideally are on the same plane. The monoplane goes back to Seymour Dunn c. 1900 and was orthodox at that time.
good vid, would like to see a follow up where you branch off into a different but equally as common fault, and that is not shallowing the club at transition.
Really enjoyed the video but trying to understand the hands at the impact area. Should this be a natural reaction of the hands based on proper downswing sequences or something we should actually try to manipulate at that moment.
With the wrist roll, about when do you start that process? Would you consider starting it when the lead hand reaches the trail knee? Or would you start the wrist roll just past the trail knee?
Had a few really bad experiences with fitting with guys not listening and selling what they needed to going to a fitter now Gotham not only sell this years nut last years models so hopefully get something that really fits
That was the best!! I've always known what swing plane is, but untill now, didn't know how to maintain it thru swing. Just sold me on buying a lazer pin!
So when you say hinge at the beginning of the golf swing you mean left to right hinge. I ruined my swing for four years trying this early hinge not realizing I was rolling my hands and arms to the right which opened the face way up.
The hands and arms are active from the top of the downswing. There isn’t enough time from the top of the downswing to impact to allow late movement of them, especially as Russell suggests when in front of the rear leg. Suggest you look at Athletic Motion Golf which demonstrates this via several videos.
I side with Russell on this. Unless you have blinding torso speed (think Tiger before US Open broken leg win), there’s time to involve hands and arms just before impact. Gently squeezing the last two fingers of the left hand for right handed golfers, bowing the left wrist, or pre-setting the club head in a closed position will help with squaring the club face. The challenge for me has always been to get the torso moving to lead the downswing.

Excellent. Never was sure what my hands were supposed to do coming into impact.
Rgrds
Sorry for late reply but latest video will certainly help
Great lesson
Anyway you can wear a jacket with different color sleeves than body of jacket? It’s a little hard to see elbow on camera as elbow and body blend together with black. Thanks for video, helpful information.
Brilliant detail
An oldie and a goodie, but backswing, downswing and follow through ideally are on the same plane. The monoplane goes back to Seymour Dunn c. 1900 and was orthodox at that time.
@@dr6124 Do you know what an idealized swing is?
good vid, would like to see a follow up where you branch off into a different but equally as common fault, and that is not shallowing the club at transition.
Really enjoyed the video but trying to understand the hands at the impact area. Should this be a natural reaction of the hands based on proper downswing sequences or something we should actually try to manipulate at that moment.
That's a fantastic question
Great instructions!
With the wrist roll, about when do you start that process? Would you consider starting it when the lead hand reaches the trail knee? Or would you start the wrist roll just past the trail knee?
I have the same question
If plane is above the target line coming down, how and when does the club move inward to hit the back of the ball?
One of your best!! 👍😎
Always thought to get the whip affect, the arms had to lag behind the shoulder turn.
oh yeah, First!
Excellent video!
Had a few really bad experiences with fitting with guys not listening and selling what they needed to going to a fitter now Gotham not only sell this years nut last years models so hopefully get something that really fits
Thank you!
Very good thanks
Great training session with the laser light. This is an awesome traingng aid.
Great Video!!! Now I need to buy a lazer pen. Thanks!
Awesome drill.
That was the best!! I've always known what swing plane is, but untill now, didn't know how to maintain it thru swing. Just sold me on buying a lazer pin!
Do you find that that the line moves as n relationship to club selection?
thanks. great info
Superb
I can not access your website for some reason, is there a problem with it at the moment?
Does this video apply to driver also?
Epic visual!
Phenomenal video 👍
Dr Russell at his best 👍
Is leaverage the same thing as leverage?
Excellent 👍
Where can I get a laser pen?
rick shields says not to roll the hands. Hogan says turn your wrist watch to the ball.
Depending on your grip type will influence the amount of rotation of the arms. But there will always be some
So when you say hinge at the beginning of the golf swing you mean left to right hinge. I ruined my swing for four years trying this early hinge not realizing I was rolling my hands and arms to the right which opened the face way up.
I'm still confused as to how you can lead with the right elbow and have a square club face

Brilliant
The challenge for me has always been to get the torso moving to lead the downswing.
where on athletic motion golf can you find where they demonstrate this?
