I've seen the tuning fork trick. Still not convinced it works, but the theory as I understand it, is that you are orienting the grain structure and banging the carbon atoms back into the center of their steel cages.
Yeah bud when I used to work in a plastic container factory, for things such as bottle bins/skips, grit boxes etc, when they first come out of the mold from being melted and cooled. I could barely touch them for a few seconds but after a few months the hands become accustomed to it. Not that you probably didn't know that just saying it incase some people didn't know. Wonderful looking damascus.

Have you tried doing an instant coffee etch? When you're done etching with ferric chloride, after neutralizing the acid, make up a strong, strong batch of hot instant coffee, then dunk the blade inside for about 40 minutes, then rinse with water. Makes the contrast really pop between the steel and the etch. I've seen Alec Steele doing the same recently on most of his Damascus projects, I think it'd help yours, too.

Please someone show this to the new Man At Arms channel That Works, would love to see what they think of this awesome work. So beautiful, job well done mate!!
I was wondering about that too. My only guess would be that based on the sound it creates when struck would tell the smith the temperature of the metal before quenching.
I've been watching your work for a while now and I have often wondered if you know ahead of time how a pattern will come out or do you just get an idea and see how it develops? In this I am referring to the damascus pattern, not the style of blade.
There is a guy in Florida that has begun making true damascus steel. He mined iron ore from one of the local mines where original damascus came from and made his own steel from it and then did the forging. The stuff most people are doing these days is damascus pattern forging/welding.
@@TanakaMatsumoto ---- And mass marketing lives on. The video on Wootz Damascus steel is interesting. With all the technology available today in powdered steels it seems is should be possible to come up with something better than the original mines had, but still, I see a lot of videos using things like rice straw and some kind of pine charcoal, a sprinkling of laurel leaves or whatever. Were they smarter? I think Mathematics came from the Middle East at some point in history, but today that area is like, um, "not exactly". What is the mastery of thought? A man can forge steel, but not thought?
I just came to the comments to see if anyone could shed some light on the tuning fork as well....I was thinking maybe he would hear a certain note when the metal was at a particular temperature. Gonna keep looking and see if I can find out.
If you twist a rubber bar, it will flip back. There is a same force in the twisted steel bar. He needs to release the force so that the final piece won't break easily. The tuning fork is to check out if the metal structure is released enough. Sorry for my english
I love watching all these damascus-ish blade videos. You guys do beautiful work. But I've an issue with calling it Damascus steel. That steel had much to do with the unique chemical signature more than just fancy patterns and on that more important issue, it's important that none of you modern masters call it Damascus Steel, call it what it is, pattern-imitations.
