Thank you for the video. Enjoyed it and made me aware of another option.
We have previously done a similar job on our house for an 8'x16' three-sided covered porch very much like this one, and are now looking at a much larger porch. For the sake of other viewers, I'll say how we did it...
The Armstrong product you used is both structural and cosmetic. I wasn't aware of it with the previous porch we screened. I will cost it out for our job.
So on that previous job, we built something up. For the structure, we ripped down some pressure treated dimensional wood a bit, which we covered or clad with pvc sleeves. We used a combination of 2x2"-10ft white pvc square profile downspouts for horizontal and vertical members between posts, and larger 4x4-8' pvc post covers at porch corners. I think we got both of them at Lowe's, and they both are still shown available.
Then for the screen part, we used the "Screen Tight" system, also easily found at Lowe's. It has flat vinyl flanges to fit 2x4's or 4x4's. The pvc covered posts we built and these flanges together make up a unit like this Armstrong aluminum post. So that was more labor our way.
For us, it'll come down to total cost but also how much extra labor will be required ripping wood and stuffing the pvc sleeves with wood -- and we all know how much wood has increased in price lately. Aluminum just might be more cost effective!
(If someone had an existing porch with painted wooden horizontal and vertical structure to it, there are examples of Screen Tight just screwed directly to the old porch pieces, and that might be the way to go. But our porch has big columns, already clad, but nothing in between them. Plus we're trying to avoid any paint surfaces on exterior -- it'll be pvc or aluminum clad for us.)
Still exploring options. Hope this helps a future viewer in some way.
Other comparisons I can think of:
-- There is a color choice of ScreenTight vinyl caps to cover these flanges when done. The Armstrong caps seem to cover the middle one inch, while the Screen Tight cover the whole flange. I'm sure both work well. Our porch looks very much like yours, only the verticals and horizontals on ours are wider-looking 2" pieces, where the Armstrong is visually narrower. [Edit -- can't find the Armstrong product per se; the current Home Depot aluminum does not have the removable cover for screwing, it's solid aluminum.]
-- Our system didn't require any mounting brackets for posts or rails - and on Home Depot's site, I only see a metal L-bracket. Is it possible they've changed their system? [ Wait -- we must have used an L-bracket to connect the horizontal rails to the posts? It's been too long...]
-- The downspouts are 10ft; will have to look into the Armstrong system having longer pieces, as this newer porch is too tall for 8ft verticals, unless we build a bottom wall for them to sit upon.
-- The durability of both systems structurally ought to be fine, I think. Our porch is about 10 years old in the Southeast region and has held up extremely well. I wash it with a pressure washer each Spring, including the screen. I don't know what our screen is made of, polyester or something? We put a heavier pet-strong screen on the bottom portion, and a lighter weight on the top, and you can't tell the difference installed.

@@metaspencer Thank YOU for such a helpful video. You did a superb job with the screened porch. As usual!
Just fyi, I can't find the Armstrong system yet online. (There's an Armstrong Aluminum company in Florida but that seems to be an installer.) I seem to be having better luck searching on "aluminum screened porch framing systems."
I see ScreenTight, makers of the PVC "flange and cover" type system sold at Lowe's, also has a separate extruded aluminum system called FastTrack. Interesting take on it. It uses small solid plastic clips that are screwed into the structural members - it says every 16" - and then the aluminum just clips over that. Seems it requires you to combine two of the open-backed pieces around these clips to create a 2x2" rail or post. www.screentight.com/pdf/FT-InfoPiece.pdf
Just for the exercise, I just costed out an 8ft across x 8ft high section with one horizontal 8ft rail, stand alone. Without splines, screws, or screening. (No tax or shipping or anything included.)
....... The Screen Tight, at Home Depot, @ $3.75 for caps and base flanges each, and applied onto existing porch structure, just $37.50.
............... If a PVC structure were built up for the same ScreenTight, our practice 8ftx8ft with one rail unit would cost $130.50.
[ I was using five 2.5"x2.5" -10ft downspouts (@ $10.58 at Lowe's -- H.D. did not have this plain style currently) and stuffing them with 8ft [non- PT] studs @ about $8 in my area currently, that ADDS another $93 to the system. Five 8ft stuffed downspouts. (I was wasting a couple of feet of downspouts for the purpose of this exercise.) Clearly the cost of wood currently is an issue; last year that would have been about $65 here.]
....... I costed out the EZ Screen system pieces at Home Depot, four 1x2 -8ft open sided pieces and one 2x2 -8ft for the rail. $137.62
....... Also costed out 6 pieces ScreenTight FastTrack channel pieces at Home Depot (cheaper than online, it's $19.16 here, ordered, pickup at store or free delivery to home). Four outside channels and using two channels to form a horizontal rail -- but I was guessing using online prices of about 75c/clip for 58 clips every 10inches of run to mount the aluminum... it might be you have to order in batches of 100 clips or 300/box. Would require further investigation. Estimated at $158.50
Seems unless you have an existing structure to use, and given the cost of wood currently, might as well go with the aluminum system and pick based on ease of installation. And unless you have a reason to like the FastTrack, if your porch has 8ft tall openings, the EZScreen system would be in stock and probably the way to go. My porch is 10ft tall, so I'd have to cost out a 10ft tall section. And it's only 6ft between most of the posts, so special order - they do seem to make 10 and 12ft channels. Easily cut; if available.
That's as far as I'm going to look now. Just wanted a feeling of the cost of these systems.

    • @metaspencer

Working with round columns usually goes one of two ways: either creating a scooped/concave matching end to your rails or cutting into the column so you can attach a squared off butt end. It just takes a bit of work to get the ends right when scooping them out and making concave connections. Sounds like a nice house!
